Violence, destructions, bombs, tanks, missiles, and death. Yet, there is so much more to War, and this fact is something that the Ancients knew as well. You see, War is not just what we typically call War but rather when taken at its essence, the universal principle of competition. This means that the Spirit of War expands to a much father and greater scope, think of everything that is competitive. Sports, video games, chess, rivalries between friends or squabbles between lovers, yet also things like Law where two sides wage the Spirit of War to make their case and be declared victor over the other. Another example is the realm of mercantilism, where one man's gain is another man's loss. Like all things, there are ways for this spirit to be good and others for it to be bad. Normally we only can see the bad, yet is the history of evolution not one war? Is friendly competition not something that sharpens the knife? War is perhaps one of the most important ghosts to get right with, or else you will find yourself a wicked and violent person. The Romans call this 'Mars' and claim that all of Mankind is descended from him, and this is where we get the term 'Martial'. Coming from the Proto-Indo-European "*mer*" meaning sea, man, or to twinkle. This is also etymologically related to the Rigvedic deities the Maruts, the children of the Rigvedic God Rudra. It is interesting and worth pointing out that the etymology of 'Rudra' might possibly come from the same Proto-Indo-European root "*hrewd*" where we get the word for '*red*' and '*ruddy*'. Considering Mars is the '*Red Planet*' I feel this is worth adding. The word '*War*' itself comes to us from the Proto-Indo-European root "*wers*" meaning to mix up, confuse, beat, or thresh. The same root also gives us words like '*worse*'.
