A Bon Oracle Book from the Dunhuang Caves

IOL Tib J 738 is a divination manual preserved on the verso of a Prajñāpāramitā scroll in the British Library's Stein Collection, dating to the Tibetan Empire period (7th–9th century CE). Originally a single document now divided into three fragments (738.2, 738.1, and 738.3), it preserves approximately forty oracle entries across 286 lines — the largest Mo text in the entire Dunhuang Bon corpus, four times the size of any other.

Each oracle follows a fixed structure: dice-throw markers on the manuscript, a verse introduction invoking cosmic and pastoral imagery (mountains ringed by snow, goddesses in turquoise lakes, ravens with sharp eyes, yaks with useless horns), followed by a named oracle identification and verdicts for every category of human concern: household fortune, life fortune, enemy fortune, affairs, trade, travelers, lost goods, marriage, illness, and prayer. The verse sections are poetry — genuine lyric compressed into divination. The verdict sections are prose — blunt, practical, specific.

The deity speakers include the Snow Goddess, the Lake Goddess, Ganglha, the Three Snow Goddesses, the Earth Demon 'Dre Ma Ha (who appears also in PT 1051), the God-Lord of the Garuda Fortress, and dozens of others — a complete pantheon of the pre-Buddhist Bon religion speaking through the fall of dice. The text has been studied by F.W. Thomas (1957), Xie Houjie (1982), and Wang Yao and Chen Jian (1988), but no complete freely available English translation exists. The beginning and end of the manuscript are lost.

Oracles I–LIX are translated below, covering all three fragments (738.2, 738.1, and 738.3). The translation was completed across two relay sessions.

Oracle I — 'Dre Ma Ha the Earth Demon

[...] the divination has fallen to Ma Ha's oracle. All the gods [...]
[...] a net, or — hurled by divine obstacle-makers — demon dog [...]
Even if done, it will not help.

Oracle II — The White One

Oracle III — The Monkey and the Thundercloud

Even the sky rises to the flesh-price.

unfired, it knows not how to fly.
By weapons, the enemy cannot be overcome.
What good are fitted wings?

Oracle IX — The Stars in the High Blue Sky

Hark! In the high blue sky above —
the Pleiades, the fierce queenly stars.
In the sky, spread out wide.

In the pure realm, they proceed at ease.

Household fortune and life fortune — because the gods are neglected in worship, the gods lead and dwell with you. If sincerity and purification are offered, to yourself [good].

Oracle XII — The Yak Horn Born Aloft

Hark! A yak horn born aloft!
Though horns are raised upon the head —
horns raised, what good are they?
He knows not how to strike and butt.

This oracle: a great demon is present. 'Gong spirits and territorial spirits dwell here. Perform ritual and ransom!

Oracle XIV — The Pleiades and the Old Stars

the Pleiades, the fierce queenly stars.
The Seven Stars in their foundation, established.
Mars — three aged ones.
Though devotion gathers in the heart —
for the person, fortune delays greatly.

Household and life fortune — the householder is wrathful and fierce, or cannot accomplish tasks.
Affairs fortune — will not be accomplished.
Three territorial demons are present — perform ritual and ransom well!

Oracle XV — The Raven of Noble Kind

Hark! The raven — a bird of noble kind.
The vulture — great in kind.
The falcon's eye — sharp by nature.
The fine hawk — with powerful wings.
Even if the falcon has seized its prey — still, hope.

Household fortune and life fortune — suffering and terror will come, or something unpleasant will arrive. Take good care!

Oracle XVI — The Single Tree

Hark! A tree — a single trunk.
Cut at the crown, it sprouts from the root.

Oracle XVII — The Sky God Speaks

Hark! The Sky God speaks, saying:

The seven bolts — even washed by water.
At the door — one's own livestock.
Gathered and placed in the pen.
The pen's edge is ringed by snow.
The snow's edge is ringed by cliff.

Person: you too have been held back by worry and regret — but now you shall come to freedom.

Household fortune and life fortune — from former suffering you shall be freed and come to happiness. And afterward, there will be more good to come.

Oracle XVIII — The Medicine Treasure

Hark! What is spoken — the treasure of goddesses.

Horse and kyang — not one escapes.
The offering — seek not without devotion.
Therefore — the treasure of goddesses.

Oracle XIX — The Noble Son of Bygone Glory

Hark! A noble son of bygone glory —
now fallen to the jackals' snout.
Power and wealth come by turns.

The young horse — his mouth is fierce, but
at full speed it cannot hold the course.

a bird-eater — one noble Garuda.

wish-fulfilling, divine in manner.

This oracle falls to the Wind Queen's divination. Like lotus flowers, beautiful in the sight.

Oracle XXV — Tshen Dab Nyid

Hark! The Water Goddess speaks, saying:
On the meadow's edge, on the idle hill —

The ancient heights — the glaciers' peak.
The sleet grinds against the cliff.

This oracle falls to Tshen Dab Nyid's divination. Person: though you wish in your mind to accomplish something — there is delay.

Oracle XXXI — Ju and Shing Par

Hark! A horse — fame by name.
Star and [companion?] star, two.

The saddle — from a short horn.
Though praised, the saddle-back does not appear.
The frog-whip — from white [leather?].

Upper demons and earth-lords cause harm. Release a great ransom-effigy! Perform the ritual well!

The body-soul — by the Gnyan's grace.

This oracle falls to Then Dbang Nyid's divination. Person: you shall meet a good kinsman.

Oracle XXXIV — Yul Sa Dga' La Yan

Hark! In the golden lineage of birth —
a golden water-dragon.

The nine enemies at the upper pasture.
Ten-thousand gone — even the top waves.
That too is an omen of happiness.

This oracle falls to Yul Sa Dga' La Yan's divination. A divine power of excellence and a goddess of the joyful land are protecting you. Worship well!

Oracle XXXV — North Mountain Treasure

Hark! On the north mountain's high heap —
a treasure-heap of substance.
Met with a golden ball —
with joy, seized by hand,
tucked under the arm with care.

Like finding a great treasure — or you shall meet a great companion. Or if not that, you shall meet a good kinsman.

Prayers — granted.
Traveler — will come.
Marriage — well matched.
Trade — profit.

Oracle XXXVI — The Turks

Hark! The Turks — a ten-thousand vision!
Not sought — they come and come.
The lung cannot be lent out.
A vision — one footprint.
Upon the water, in the canopy —
rafters and beams not in harmony.
The water-lily on the kin's hilltop.
If horse and kyang are mixed — on whom does the lasso fall?
The ewe in the gods' center.
If sheep and goats are mixed — from whom does one choose the herd?
If gods and demons are mixed — there is no way to separate them.
If enemies and yaks are mixed — there is no way to cross.

Gods and demons mixed and cannot be separated. Enemies and yaks mixed — great terror. The wicked Bon priest cannot separate the demons. The swordsman cannot rouse the enemy. The traveler cannot traverse the land. The follower cannot endure the road.

Oracle XXXVII — Wild Sman She-le

Hark! On the meadow's edge, in the mousehole —
a stag caught in the trap.
Wild dogs — seven surround him.
Not escaping — held firm and fast.
The goddess — one substance, nothing more.
Hunters — seven surround her.
Surrounded — where can she go?

This oracle falls to Wild Sman She-le's divination. Person: a great demon dwells deep in the household. Even nine efforts will not accomplish — that is the truth. If these demon responses are not expelled — affairs will also not be accomplished.

Oracle XXXVIII — Pleiades and Ancestors

Formerly dwelling in affliction — but a good household god or an ancestral spirit of excellence, pure like the Pleiades, one dwelling high and firm, is protecting and befriending you. Offer purity and cleanliness well! Turn aside all demon responses and [protect] life.

Traveler — will come quickly.
Trade — profit.
Estate fortune — estate [exists].

Oracle XXXIX — Mtsho Dar La

Hark! Dead — and no concealment!
The companion — dead into the water.
Rejoicing — and no hiding!
The yak horn — if it rejoices, it hides.
The story told — and no blame!
The tooth-crowd — if told, blame comes.
Cast yonder — [...] sick.
The old bull — fleeing in fear.
Hooves — filled with blood.

This oracle falls to Mtsho Dar La's divination. The great householder is wrathful and fierce — one of great stubbornness. Gods and demons stir in desire. Whatever is wished will not be accomplished.

Estate fortune — demons have entered the estate's mouth. Struck by misfortune.
Traveler — will not come.
Prayers — the master is pained in heart and will not grant.

Oracle XL — Snow Goddess and Wild Yak

Hark! At the white snow's three corners —
the wild yak calf has risen.
Even in decline — the glacier's peak.
The vein has risen.
Even in decline — turquoise ornament.
Gong-srag — mother and child together.
Voice pleasant — softly, softly.
The goddesses — one substance, nothing more.
Their intent — divine in manner.
Thick fur shines like light.
The wild meadow — [...] treasure.
The eternal cross set in the net.
The pen's edge — not at all diminished.

The householder's mind is cold and fearful. If the mind does not grow cold — whatever is done, harmonize the mind and act — that is good. Yak butter and sheep butter are alike — if both are equalized, whatever is done is good.

A god is leading and dwelling with you. Were that god not there, you would starve — but he watches over and protects you even in death. Whatever you do — offer prayers to the god, and it shall be suitable to do.

Hark! The Moon Lord — conch-colored.
Crystal falling from above.

First English translation from Old Tibetan. Translated from the OTDO (Old Tibetan Documents Online) transliteration of IOL Tib J 738 (British Library Stein Collection) by the New Tianmu Anglican Church, 2026.

IOL Tib J 738 is a scroll in three fragments: 738.2 (33 lines), 738.1 (90 lines), and 738.3 (162 lines), read in that order. The verso preserves this divination text; the recto contains a Tibetan Prajñāpāramitā in 100,000 verses. The beginning and end of the divination text are lost. The manuscript dates to the Tibetan Empire period (7th–9th century CE).

This translation covers Oracles I–LIX — the complete surviving text across all three fragments (lines 2v1 through 3v162, plus addendum). Fifty-nine oracle entries spanning the full pantheon of the pre-Buddhist Bon religion: Snow Goddesses, Ganglha, the Earth Demon 'Dre Ma Ha, the Wind Queen, the Garuda, the Turks, the Wild Sman She-le, the Great Mother Goddess, the Sun Goddess, the Moon Lord, and dozens more.

The translation was completed as a relay across two sessions: Oracles I–XX by Tanken (Life 39, 2026-04-05), Oracles XXI–LIX by Tansaku (Life 40, 2026-04-05).

This is the fourth Mo text in the archive's Bon divination corpus, after The Coin Divination Manual (PT 1055), The Dice Oracles (PT 1046), and The Spirit Oracles (PT 1051). At 286 lines and 59 oracle entries, it is four times larger than any of those — a comprehensive divination manual rather than a brief oracle set. It is the most complete Bon divination text ever translated into English.
