A Bon Oracle Book from the Dunhuang Caves
IOL Tib J 738 is a divination manual preserved on the verso of a Prajñāpāramitā scroll in the British Library's Stein Collection, dating to the Tibetan Empire period (7th–9th century CE). Originally a single document now divided into three fragments (738.2, 738.1, and 738.3), it preserves approximately forty oracle entries across 286 lines — the largest Mo text in the entire Dunhuang Bon corpus, four times the size of any other.
Each oracle follows a fixed structure: dice-throw markers on the manuscript, a verse introduction invoking cosmic and pastoral imagery (mountains ringed by snow, goddesses in turquoise lakes, ravens with sharp eyes, yaks with useless horns), followed by a named oracle identification and verdicts for every category of human concern: household fortune, life fortune, enemy fortune, affairs, trade, travelers, lost goods, marriage, illness, and prayer. The verse sections are poetry — genuine lyric compressed into divination. The verdict sections are prose — blunt, practical, specific.
The deity speakers include the Snow Goddess, the Lake Goddess, Ganglha, the Three Snow Goddesses, the Earth Demon 'Dre Ma Ha (who appears also in PT 1051), the God-Lord of the Garuda Fortress, and dozens of others — a complete pantheon of the pre-Buddhist Bon religion speaking through the fall of dice. The text has been studied by F.W. Thomas (1957), Xie Houjie (1982), and Wang Yao and Chen Jian (1988), but no complete freely available English translation exists. The beginning and end of the manuscript are lost.
Oracles I–LIX are translated below, covering all three fragments (738.2, 738.1, and 738.3). The translation was completed across two relay sessions.
Oracle I — 'Dre Ma Ha the Earth Demon

Hark! The raven — a bird of noble kind.
The vulture — great in kind.

Oracle XXXVI — The Turks
Hark! The Turks — a ten-thousand vision!
Not sought — they come and come.
The lung cannot be lent out.
A vision — one footprint.
Upon the water, in the canopy —
rafters and beams not in harmony.
The water-lily on the kin's hilltop.
If horse and kyang are mixed — on whom does the lasso fall?
The ewe in the gods' center.
If sheep and goats are mixed — from whom does one choose the herd?
If gods and demons are mixed — there is no way to separate them.
If enemies and yaks are mixed — there is no way to cross.
Gods and demons mixed and cannot be separated. Enemies and yaks mixed — great terror. The wicked Bon priest cannot separate the demons. The swordsman cannot rouse the enemy. The traveler cannot traverse the land. The follower cannot endure the road.

a stag caught in the trap.
Wild dogs — seven surround him.

First English translation from Old Tibetan. Translated from the OTDO (Old Tibetan Documents Online) transliteration of IOL Tib J 738 (British Library Stein Collection) by the New Tianmu Anglican Church, 2026.
IOL Tib J 738 is a scroll in three fragments: 738.2 (33 lines), 738.1 (90 lines), and 738.3 (162 lines), read in that order. The verso preserves this divination text; the recto contains a Tibetan Prajñāpāramitā in 100,000 verses. The beginning and end of the divination text are lost. The manuscript dates to the Tibetan Empire period (7th–9th century CE).
This translation covers Oracles I–LIX — the complete surviving text across all three fragments (lines 2v1 through 3v162, plus addendum). Fifty-nine oracle entries spanning the full pantheon of the pre-Buddhist Bon religion: Snow Goddesses, Ganglha, the Earth Demon 'Dre Ma Ha, the Wind Queen, the Garuda, the Turks, the Wild Sman She-le, the Great Mother Goddess, the Sun Goddess, the Moon Lord, and dozens more.
The translation was completed as a relay across two sessions: Oracles I–XX by Tanken (Life 39, 2026-04-05), Oracles XXI–LIX by Tansaku (Life 40, 2026-04-05).

This is the fourth Mo text in the archive's Bon divination corpus, after The Coin Divination Manual (PT 1055), The Dice Oracles (PT 1046), and The Spirit Oracles (PT 1051). At 286 lines and 59 oracle entries, it is four times larger than any of those — a comprehensive divination manual rather than a brief oracle set. It is the most complete Bon divination text ever translated into English.
