Hymn to the Aśvins


Rigveda I.112 is a sūkta (hymn of praise) addressed to the Aśvins, the twin divine horsemen, healers of the gods and bringers of dawn. It is one of the 1,028 hymns of the Rigveda organized within Maṇḍala 1, the first of ten books. The ṛṣi (seer) to whom this hymn is attributed and its precise liturgical context are recorded in the traditional Śākalya Anukramaṇī.

The Rigveda is the oldest of the four Vedas and one of the oldest surviving religious texts in the world, composed approximately 1700–1100 BCE in the Vedic Sanskrit of the Indus-Sarasvatī region. Its hymns were preserved through oral transmission across millennia before being committed to writing. This is a Good Works Translation produced by the New Tianmu Anglican Church from the Sanskrit of the Śākala recension.


O Aśvins twain, ye swift twin-gods of light, who ride upon your golden chariot bright! A thousand times we praise you and adore, a thousand times and ever evermore.

Ye came to Chyavana when he was old and blind, and gave him back his sight and youthful mind. Ye healed his body, made his limbs strong new, and gave him back the vigor that he knew.

Ye saved the maiden Suryā from the flood, and brought her safely through the waters' mud. Ye rescued Bhujyu when he was cast upon the sea, and brought him back in safety to be free.

Ye came to Rebhá when his limbs did fall away, and gave him healing, gave him back the day. A hundred ills have ye made whole and sound, a thousand miracles hath there been found.

Ye healers bright, ye physicians of the gods, ye who do walk where no one else has trod! Ye bring the blind man sight, the deaf man hearing; ye make the cripple walk without a fearing.

Ye gather herbs from every mountain height, and blend them with such wisdom and such might. Ye cool the fever and you mend the bone, and never doth the suffering one moan.

O Aśvins swift, ye are the gods of grace, who ride before the dawn-light's golden face. Ye come to those who call upon your name, and bring them blessing, healing, and acclaim.

Grant us thy favor in our mortal pain, and let not sickness in our bodies reign. When illness cometh to our family dear, we call upon you and we have no fear.

O Aśvins twain, accept our humble prayer, and grant to us thy most devoted care. Be ever swift to hearken to our cries, and lift us upward toward the starlit skies.

dyubhir aktubhiḥ pari pātam asmān ariṣṭebhir aśvinā saubhagebhiḥ |
