Hymn to Agni
Rigveda X.150 is a sūkta (hymn of praise) from Maṇḍala 10 of the Rigveda, one of the 1,028 hymns organized within the ten books of the oldest Veda. The Rigveda was composed approximately 1700–1100 BCE in Vedic Sanskrit and preserved through oral transmission across millennia.
This is a Good Works Translation produced by the New Tianmu Anglican Church from the Sanskrit of the Śākala recension.
Even when thou art kindled, still art thou kindled anew, O bearer of the offering for the gods.
With the Shining Ones, the Fierce, and the Bright, draw nigh unto us—draw nigh in thy grace.
This rite before us—delighting in the word spoken—come thou near.
We, the sons of earth, do call upon thee, O Flame; for thy grace we lift our cry.
Thee, O Knower-of-All-Births, who grantest all desires, do I praise with my deep-seeing thought.
O Agni, bring unto us the gods whose will is lovely— bring them hither in grace, those whose will is lovely.
Agni, the god, was made foremost among the host divine; Agni have men of vision lit with holy fire.
Agni do I call with great longing at the gaining of the prize; 'tis his grace I seek, for the winning of the prize.
Agni gave aid to Atri, to Bharadvāja, to Gaviṣṭhira; he stood by Kaṇva and Trasadasyu at the strife.
Agni is called by Vasiṣṭha, placed before all men; for grace is he called, the one who stands before.
