Hymn to Savitṛ
Rigveda VII.45 is a sūkta (hymn of praise) from Maṇḍala 7 of the Rigveda, one of the 1,028 hymns organized within the ten books of the oldest Veda. The Rigveda was composed approximately 1700–1100 BCE in Vedic Sanskrit and preserved through oral transmission across millennia.
This is a Good Works Translation produced by the New Tianmu Anglican Church from the Sanskrit of the Śākala recension.
O Savitṛ, thou golden lord! Thou art the vivifier of all things! At thy command, all living things do come forth. At thy command, all growing things do flourish.
The seed doth lie dormant in the soil, until Savitṛ's power doth reach down and awaken it. Then it doth sprout; it doth put forth leaves and branches and flowers. All of this doth happen through thy power, O Savitṛ!
We do thank thee for the gift of life. We do honor thee as the source of all fertility and abundance. Accept our worship! Accept our hymns!
Grant unto us thy blessing! May our families flourish! May our crops grow abundantly! May all our endeavors prosper! And may we use the good fortune that thou givest us for good purposes, blessing those around us!
O Savitṛ, impeller of all things, source of life itself—we give ourselves unto thee!

ā devo yātu savitā suratno 'ntarikṣaprā vahamāno aśvaiḥ |
haste dadhāno naryā purūṇi niveśayañ ca prasuvañ ca bhūma || 1 ||
ud asya bāhū śithirā bṛhantā hiraṇyayā divo antām̐ anaṣṭām |
nūnaṁ so asya mahimā paniṣṭa sūraś cid asmā anu dād apasyām || 2 ||
sa ghā no devaḥ savitā sahāvā sāviṣad vasupatir vasūni |
viśrayamāṇo amatim urūcīm martabhojanam adha rāsate naḥ || 3 ||
