Hymn to Sūrya
Rigveda VII.62 is a sūkta (hymn of praise) from Maṇḍala 7 of the Rigveda, one of the 1,028 hymns organized within the ten books of the oldest Veda. The Rigveda was composed approximately 1700–1100 BCE in Vedic Sanskrit and preserved through oral transmission across millennia.
This is a Good Works Translation produced by the New Tianmu Anglican Church from the Sanskrit of the Śākala recension.
O Mitra and Varuṇa! O Sūrya, thou radiant one! Ye three who dwell in the highest heaven! Ye guardians of the day and watchers of the cosmic order!
The sun runneth his course across the heavens, never tiring, never faltering. Thou dost see all that happeneth upon the earth below, O Sūrya! Nothing escapeth thy gaze; nothing hideth from thy light!
Mitra and Varuṇa dwell beside thee, O golden one! Together ye hold all things in perfect balance! Ye are the pillar upon which the universe resteth!
Grant unto us the blessing of thy light! Warm our fields so that the crops may grow! Ripen our fruits and our grains! Make our days bright and our nights peaceful!
Banish the darkness that dwelleth in the hearts of the wicked! Let thy rays penetrate every hidden place and reveal all that is secret! O Sūrya, thou illuminator of all things, accept this hymn of praise! Grant us thy favor and thy protection! Let us bask in thy warmth and thy light!

ut sūryo bṛhad arcīṁṣy aśret puru viśvā janima mānuṣāṇām |
samo divā dadṛśe rocamānaḥ kratvā kṛtaḥ sukṛtaḥ kartṛbhir bhūt || 1 ||
sa sūrya prati puro na ud gā ebhiḥ stomebhir etaśebhir evaiḥ |
pra no mitrāya varuṇāya voco 'nāgaso aryamṇe agnaye ca || 2 ||
vi naḥ sahasraṁ śurudho radantv ṛtāvāno varuṇo mitro agniḥ |
yacchantu candrā upamaṁ no arkam ā naḥ kāmam pūpurantu stavānāḥ || 3 ||
dyāvābhūmī adite trāsīthāṁ no ye vāṁ jajñuḥ sujanimāna ṛṣve |
mā heḻe bhūma varuṇasya vāyor mā mitrasya priyatamasya nṛṇām || 4 ||
pra bāhavā sisṛtaṁ jīvase na ā no gavyūtim ukṣataṁ ghṛtena |
