Hymn to Varuṇa
Rigveda VII.65 is a sūkta (hymn of praise) from Maṇḍala 7 of the Rigveda, one of the 1,028 hymns organized within the ten books of the oldest Veda. The Rigveda was composed approximately 1700–1100 BCE in Vedic Sanskrit and preserved through oral transmission across millennia.
This is a Good Works Translation produced by the New Tianmu Anglican Church from the Sanskrit of the Śākala recension.
O Mitra and Varuṇa, keepers of the cosmic law! Hear this prayer from those who love you and honor you!
We have kept your commandments; we have walked in the straight path. We have not strayed from the way of righteousness; we have not fallen into the traps set by the evil ones.
Now we ask for your reward! Grant us wealth and prosperity! Grant us good health and long life! Grant us children who are wise and brave! Grant us cattle that are strong and fertile! Grant us fields that yield abundance!
The man who honoreth you shall be blessed with all good things! The woman who worshippeth you shall bear many children! The household that keepeth your law shall prosper forever!
O great ones, we bring our hearts to you! We bring our voices in song! We bring our offerings of ghee and grain! Accept all that we offer and be gracious unto us forever!

prati vāṁ sūra udite sūktair mitraṁ huve varuṇam pūtadakṣam |
yayor asurya1m akṣitaṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ viśvasya yāmann ācitā jigatnu || 1 ||
tā hi devānām asurā tāv aryā tā naḥ kṣitīḥ karatam ūrjayantīḥ |
aśyāma mitrāvaruṇā vayaṁ vāṁ dyāvā ca yatra pīpayann ahā ca || 2 ||
tā bhūripāśāv anṛtasya setū duratyetū ripave martyāya |
ṛtasya mitrāvaruṇā pathā vām apo na nāvā duritā tarema || 3 ||
ā no mitrāvaruṇā havyajuṣṭiṁ ghṛtair gavyūtim ukṣatam iḻābhiḥ |
