Hymn to Indra
Rigveda VII.84 is a sūkta (hymn of praise) from Maṇḍala 7 of the Rigveda, one of the 1,028 hymns organized within the ten books of the oldest Veda. The Rigveda was composed approximately 1700–1100 BCE in Vedic Sanskrit and preserved through oral transmission across millennia.
This is a Good Works Translation produced by the New Tianmu Anglican Church from the Sanskrit of the Śākala recension.
O Indra, thou art mighty! O Varuṇa, thou art wise! Together, ye do protect us. The enemies of righteousness do fear you both. The demons do flee before your combined power.
We ask of you both: grant us thy blessing! Make our kingdom prosperous; make our enemies weak. Give us wisdom to rule justly and courage to defend our people. Let no foe prevail against us; let no sorrow overtake us!
Accept our offerings; drink of the soma; be satisfied with our prayers! And in return, grant us all that we ask of thee!
