Path of Awakening to True Cultivation

修真覺路

The Path of Awakening to True Cultivation (修真覺路, Xiūzhēn Juélù) is a Yiguandao (一貫道) spirit-writing revelation composed over six consecutive days in the second month of the Wuzi year — 1948 CE — at a time when the movement stood at the edge of catastrophe. Zhang Tianran (張天然), the eighteenth patriarch and male co-leader of Yiguandao, had died on August 15, 1947. The Heavenly Mandate now rested on one person alone: Sun Huiming (孫慧明), the Teacher Mother (師母), who speaks here through the planchette under her celestial title Yuehui Bodhisattva (月慧菩薩, Moon Wisdom Bodhisattva).

Six months after Zhang Tianran's death, with the Chinese Civil War intensifying and the Communist revolution approaching, the Teacher Mother delivered these six sessions of spirit-writing — one per day, the 9th through the 14th of the second month. The urgency is palpable. She corrects, admonishes, pleads, and prophesies. She names the specific diseases of leadership: claiming others' merits, forming private cliques, examining others' faults while blind to one's own. She warns that the Heavenly Mandate can be silently withdrawn. She calls her disciples "children" and "confused little ones" (迷娃) and asks them, with a mother's mixture of love and exasperation, to wake up.

The text opens with a preface by Ji Gong (濟公活佛, the Living Buddha), and appends two later sections: the Mother's Ten Admonitions (母諭), a set of practical instructions for community life, and the Hundred-Cure Pill (百效丹), a list of twenty-seven spiritual diseases issued in 1950 — after the Communist takeover, when Yiguandao was being actively persecuted on the mainland.

The Chinese source text is from taolibrary.com (善書圖書館), Category 52 (一貫道經典二), which states: "歡迎轉載,上傳,翻印,流通" — "Welcome to reprint, upload, reproduce, and circulate." This is the first English translation. A Good Works Translation — translated from Classical Chinese for the Good Work Library by the New Tianmu Anglican Church, 2026. Gospel register.

Ji Gong's Preface

The great Way in practice — all under heaven is shared. Bright virtue befriends the people; in times of change, harmony prevails. Transform this world of suffering to reach the Great Unity.

Therefore heaven's course winnows and selects, distinguishing all beings. The cauldron is set and the furnace stands — through its trials it selects the virtuous, the talented, the worthy, and the brilliant. All who cultivate the Dao must undergo a round of tempering, refined by the fires of both gentleness and severity.

Know that when heaven sends its tests, this is the necessary process: verifying sincerity from falsehood, distinguishing the true from the false, testing wisdom, separating the worthy from the foolish. Yet if one's conduct accords with heaven and responds to human need, heaven will naturally show compassion. But if one acts against principle, saying one thing and meaning another, heaven will surely not be lenient.

At this time of gathering and completion, selecting the worthy and appointing the able — without true testing, how can loyalty and treachery be judged? Without true refining, how can the dross be removed?

The Heavenly Mandate shifts in secret. Those who cultivate the Dao find themselves as if walking through a five-mile fog. Alas! Rebellious disciples and heterodox factions cluster like thorns. Branches split, sects diverge, and a hundred false paths spring up. If they do not return to follow the true altar, they will fall into a bottomless pit. The danger is extreme!

Be cautious! Be cautious indeed!

Now you, worthy ones, bear the responsibility of carrying on the past and opening the future, governing all things on heaven's behalf. If you do not recognize the times of heaven, if you do not observe the signs it hangs in the sky, your own rise or fall is a small matter — but how then can you guide all beings onto the path of awakening and lead them toward the light?

Our Way inherits the legacy of Yao and Shun, follows the patterns of Kings Wen and Wu, and upholds the teachings of Confucius and Mencius. If you cannot practice what you preach, if your words and deeds do not match, you have already lost the original purpose of cultivating the Dao. How can you aspire to sagehood or virtue? Moreover, if you yourself are not yet good, how can you bring goodness to all under heaven? If you yourself are not yet awake, how can you awaken the world?

"When the ruler's person is correct, things are accomplished without commands." But my disciples have already forgotten this.

What is past cannot be changed. What is to come may yet be pursued. I urge you, worthy ones: repent without delay. Be tender toward heaven's heart. Cast away your private opinions. Distinguish right from wrong. Separate the true from the false. Take up the heavy burden. Act according to your place. Never act rashly. Make self-mastery your guiding thought. Make self-cultivation your foundation. Promote the supreme principle of centrality and harmony. Put into practice the unity of knowledge and action. Transform the confused on heaven's behalf. Share the Teacher's burden. Give your all until the aim is reached.

In all things, look first to yourself. Avoid others' criticism. Stand firmly on the ground. Step into nirvana. Ascend the Path of Awakening to True Cultivation.

When the great task is accomplished, teacher and disciple will celebrate together at the Dragon Flower Assembly. Gods and mortals will rejoice, sharing the happiness of heaven's family.

This serves as the preface.

Session I — The Ninth Day of the Second Month, Wuzi Year

Cultivate the Dao, cultivate the heart — you must understand the cause.
Bright virtue reaches perfection; make the people new.
True Way, true testing — testing the true will.
Principle and nature proclaimed to save the original beings.
Awaken to past wrongs and let repentance arise.
Point clearly to the true path and set the compass.
When the road opens, you must still hasten your pace.
Southward, the fortune of culture unfolds to meet this spring.

I am Yuehui Bodhisattva. Bearing a compassionate decree, today I arrive at the Buddha House. I bow before the Heavenly Chariot.

How have you been, my dear ones? Taking up the jade balance, I write a few words of instruction. Ha!

Clouds of sorrow cover the mid-autumn. The sky darkens, the day dims. Fire Virtue has handed over the decree and returned to the heavenly palace. The heavy burden of the Heavenly Mandate is left for one person alone to bear.

So many things still unfinished, depending on you, worthy disciples. The Gathering draws near, yet affairs have no clear shape. Quickly seek out those with affinity and ferry the faithful across. Renew yourselves, renew the people — each of you establish great virtue. When the final task is done, together we go to the Dragon Flower Assembly.

At dusk the western hills blaze with ten thousand streaks of light.
Heretical teachings run rampant, tangled as hemp.
Heaven's will is hard to fathom — mysterious designs are laid.
This arena is arranged to select the worthy and the able.
Do not say the times are perilous and the fortune dire —
adversity is the soil that cultivates extraordinary talent.
Heaven places great responsibility on such people,
winnowing the dross, grinding away the flaws.
Do not bring trouble upon yourself:
one stray thought in motion, and the demon is triggered.

The August One is compassionate everywhere.
Entrust your life to heaven — the broad road opens.
If the road ahead has obstacles,
clear away the thorns and devise a good method.
It is not that heaven lacks compassion —
it is because the disciples' intentions are uneven.
The distance between heaven and the abyss is only one wrong thought.
Now is not the past — you must see clearly.

Resolve to establish non-action as your guiding principle.
In all things follow what comes and be content with your lot.
Heaven never cuts off anyone's path.
At the dead end, life appears — the true method is revealed.
If you can embody heaven's heart and follow heaven's will,
examine your own rights and wrongs yourself.
To cultivate only the surface is to deceive yourself.
When heart and mouth are one — that is worthy of praise.
Master yourself, restore propriety, and lead those who come after.
Give your full loyalty, your full filial devotion — this repays heaven's grace.

Each person, guard your own position.
Proceed step by step — do not act in chaos.
When one branch shakes, a hundred branches move.
When one falls, ten thousand plunge into the pit.
I hope my worthy disciples can distinguish right from wrong.
Walk the path of awakening with sincerity and principle.
If you lack both learning and virtue,
how will you face the return to your original home?
With little talent and no virtue, how can you bear a great responsibility?
To disgrace your position is to heap sin upon yourself.
The shifts of wind and rain can still be measured.
Your own insight and judgment can also be examined.
If you have ability, give your full ability.
If you lack ability, yield to those who are worthy.
A broken cart that cannot move must be cast aside.
A broken cart blocking the road cannot stand for long.
Small merit is still acceptable — but great evil is not.
The more you test others, the more your own faults grow.
Doing little work is still acceptable —
but when you bungle things again and again, the spirits take note.

Though the Old Mother's compassion is vast,
beware the courts of law in the spirit world.
The Teacher Mother fears her disciples will walk the wrong path —
therefore she sends down this text to wake her confused children.
I urge my worthy disciples: wake up!
Bring out your Dao-heart and struggle on.
Settle all your past transgressions.
With sincerity, move the August One to smile.
Disciples, follow this Path of Awakening to True Cultivation —
the future stretches before you, boundless and bright.
Disciples, advance according to the compass of clear principle,
straight to the homeland of Wuji — your original home.

Thus instructed, the writing ceases. I bow before heaven. I hope each of my worthy disciples takes care. Ha ha! Withdraw.

Session II — The Tenth Day of the Second Month

Adapt to circumstances, using the middle way.
Transmit the Dao, promote principle, select the worthy and able.
Govern all things on heaven's behalf, ordering the final assembly.
Follow the methods of the ancient sages, promoting the practice of the Way.
The Heavenly Way descends to the world to save the faithful.
Ferry the confused and benighted back to the heavenly court.
Only with a true mandate can life and death be resolved.
United in purpose, the Dao shines forth.

I am Yuehui Bodhisattva. Bearing a compassionate decree, today I arrive at the altar. I bow before the Heavenly Chariot. I take up the brush and write a few lines. Ha ha!

The Heavenly Mandate! The Heavenly Mandate! One pointing of the Pass resolves death and transcends life. Most honored, most weighty. The manager's responsibility is truly not light. Continue heaven's standard — a bright lamp for ten thousand. Everywhere, everyone respects it. When the mandate comes from immortals and Buddhas, respond with care. Thinking of this, I tremble. Always hold the center. Ha ha!

Moonlight blazes bright across the courtyard.
Stars shine forth, each showing its own brilliance.
Winter goes, spring comes — adversity reaches its peak and turns to fortune.
The altar turns, the signs change, human affairs are renewed.

The Teacher Zhang has delivered heaven's decree.
All disciples must likewise fulfill their vows.
The manager receives the Heavenly Mandate a second time.
Now is not the past — you must discern clearly.
This time, establish your great vow anew.
You must reform the perfunctory ways of before.
Seven generations of ancestors and nine generations of descendants all depend on this —
never treat it as child's play.
There are still thirty articles of regulation.
Mouth after mouth, voice after voice: observe them faithfully.

According to what the Teacher Mother observes now,
compared to before, the illness has not lightened.
Why do you retreat further the more you cultivate?
If the conscience does not stir, how can the Dao be achieved?
Without linchpins, how can a cart advance?
Without trustworthiness, a person can hardly survive.
As one who represents the Enlightened Teacher,
how can you speak without regard for your actions?
The manager is the standard-bearer for all —
every gesture and action carries weight.
When one person is true, ten thousand become true.
When one person is false, all fall into the pit together.
Harming someone's body requires a life in repayment —
but harming ten thousand souls — how can that account be settled?

The Teacher Mother writes this with pain in her heart.
She wants to stop the planchette, unwilling to go further.
Ah — she does not wish to speak, yet she must.
She hopes her disciples will quickly cure their many ailments.

The great vow is treated like a toothache chant.
The regulations are treated like wind past the ears.
Pulling this way and that to cover one's own faults.
Grafting flowers and swapping branches — claiming others' merits as one's own.
Openly chanting scriptures and the principle of justice,
secretly wielding schemes and forming private cliques.
When others earn merit, their eyes burn with jealousy.
When others err, they feel no compassion.
They do not exhaust their efforts for the responsibilities they bear,
yet they brandish their authority because of the Heavenly Mandate.
Where there is the slightest profit, they force their way in.
Where there is no benefit, they push it away clean.
When discussing affairs, others are always wrong.
When it comes to getting things done, only they are capable.
They examine others' faults as clearly as a bright mirror —
but examining their own faults, they are like blind children.

If this is not corrected and they continue to cultivate,
do not speak of sagehood — even virtue is impossible.
Do not resent the Teacher Mother's cold words.
If teaching is not strict, the fault falls on the teacher.
Know that the Heavenly Mandate is not given lightly.
Those who are not good will have it silently withdrawn — be warned.
I hope my disciples remain vigilant at all times.
Never again be confused.
From this day forward, make each day new.
Exchange your sordid old mindset for something clean.
Past mistakes, present mistakes — in the future, make no more.
If you still do not reform, this life will be wasted.

Dear disciples, listen now!
Do not fail the Teacher Mother's bitter words.
Know that the Heavenly Mandate is supremely precious —
selected by the cosmic stars, children of loyalty and filial devotion.
The noble person fears three things, and the first is the Heavenly Mandate.
The Heavenly Mandate is not for ordinary people to bear.
The great task of the Gathering depends on the Heavenly Mandate.
Without the Mandate, how can the ten thousand methods be set right?
With the Mandate, a thousand Buddhas come to help.
With the Mandate, ten thousand immortals answer the call.
My disciples have received the Mandate and bear holy titles —
all because of accumulated virtue and great merit.
To receive the Dao still requires three lifetimes of fortune.
To receive the Mandate requires even deeper roots and constancy.
Understanding this, never abandon yourself.
Revive your limitless great spirit once more.
Nurture those who follow, adapting to the person and the place.
Observe words and expressions to know when to act and when to stop.
Do not remain silent when you see someone in need —
if you do not speak, how will the Dao reach them?
But also do not speak without proper stages,
causing annoyance and wasting your own heart.

Bearing the Heavenly Mandate requires dignity and weight.
Watch your step — do not follow blindly.
Follow what is good; reform what is not.
Each person's position must be clearly understood.
Proceed step by step, head bowed in humility.
True merit and genuine goodness are the essential principle.
Do not worry that others do not know you —
when the White Sun era's curtain is drawn, true merit is revealed.
Teacher and disciple, hand in hand, laughing: Ha ha!
When the great task is clearly accomplished, repay the love.

Thus announced, the instruction ceases. I bow before the Chariot. Farewell, disciples — I withdraw from the altar and return to the heavenly court. Ha ha! Withdraw.

Session III — The Eleventh Day of the Second Month

Three rounds of testing to judge the foolish and the wise.
Govern on heaven's behalf, ordering this round of affairs.
Talent and virtue together — wait for the proper time to advance.
Heaven's fortune turns and changes — this is not the past.
Lead the people to reverence, loyalty, and encouragement.
Spread the way of culture across the world of dust.
Since the mandate rests upon your body, exert yourself fully.
Transform the people, proclaim the Heavenly Way's mystery.

I am Yuehui Bodhisattva. Bearing the command, today I arrive at the altar. I bow before the Heavenly Chariot. Taking up the brush, I speak briefly. Ha ha!

A gentle wind dances through the willows. The stream flows, vigorous and clear. The high mountain gazes in stillness. The fishing boats pass by. Ten thousand kalpas, a thousand lives — and at the end, this moment arrives. The third period is the hardest to meet. Heaven grants this beautiful fortune. Seize the opportunity — be alive and nimble! Heaven opens its examination hall to select the sage and elevate the wise. Look up, look down — what time is it now? Pure stillness reaches non-action. A level heart arrives at centrality and harmony. Emulate heaven and earth; hold fast to the true self. The road ahead is bright and clear. Ha ha!

When people fell into the post-heaven realm, desire entangled their nature.
When dust collects on a mirror, the light can hardly show.
Begin with the investigation of things — first remove desire.
If you wish to make virtue bright, first quiet the mind.
You must examine what comes first and what comes after,
what is substantial and what is thin — understand this clearly.
Self-cultivation is the root of being human.
When the root is established, the Dao is born — as the ancient sages said.

Ambition does not depend on age.
Cultivation knows no difference between woman and man.
The Three Talents are young, yet they bear a great responsibility.
The August One proclaims the Heavenly Mandate to their shoulders.
They represent the immortals and Buddhas, transmitting the sage's intent.
In constant purity and stillness, they appeal to heaven above.
If you wish for heaven and humanity to become one —
hold fast to your innate conscience and do not lean to either side.
Do not say that youth means little talent or knowledge —
the immortals and Buddhas secretly lend their strength.
Do not abandon yourself — summon your courage!
Let your body serve its purpose and follow what is natural.
Emulate the sages and the worthy — become the standard-bearer.
A pillar in the midst of the current — extraordinary son or daughter.
Let the waves of fortune roll as they will —
wipe your eyes and calmly observe what is straight and what is crooked.

Cultivate diligently, refine constantly, reflect and comprehend.
Sweep the chamber clean and prepare it for the Buddhas and immortals.
Do not fear labor or hardship —
when your sincerity is true, heaven itself will show compassion.
How glorious it is when god and mortal become one!
A chance that comes once in a thousand ages — this beautiful bond!
Unfurl your great ambition and advance toward the light.
Do not let sound and color entangle your original nature.
Abandon greed, distance yourself from wealth, nourish the vast and upright.
Shatter the dust of worldly toil and resolve ten thousand ties.
The road ahead is limitless — it waits for you to walk it.
Do not let slander lure you into the abyss.
With steadfast faith, exhaust your loyalty and filial duty.
With one heart and one mind, lean on heaven above.

Heaven does not speak and the earth does not talk —
yet human beings proclaim heaven's mysterious truth on their behalf.
The Heavenly Talent emulates heaven with few words.
The Earthly Talent emulates the earth with broad patience.
The Human Talent emulates the sages and proclaims heaven's intent.
With a level heart and a still spirit, cross the pass of emptiness.
Each person fulfill their own responsibility.
Each person's position must be thoroughly understood.
Seize the moment and act according to person and place.
Be nimble and responsive — adapt as fortune turns.
Do not argue with others about their strengths or faults.
If a matter does not concern you, speak less.
In the twelve hours, hold the center in constant stillness.
Non-action, always embraced — an empty field of mind.
Great impartiality, no selfishness — courageous for what is right.
Support the upright, suppress the deviant — then you accord with heaven.
Do not fear bitter words of ridicule or mockery.
When you owe nothing to heaven or to humanity, your heart is at ease.
In all things, pursue them to the bottom.
Do not follow human sentiment — value integrity alone.
Constantly give rise to your innate conscience; preserve the highest good.
With utmost sincerity, appeal to heaven — the mystery unfolds of itself.
Do not let adversity alter your original resolve.
To shrink from difficulty is not the way of the worthy.
With heroic heart burning, pierce the vault of heaven!
With spirit blazing, establish your merit at the foundation!
Unyielding before power, unmoved by poverty —
from beginning to end, hold steady and follow the natural.

You are not of common stock.
You bear the mandate to manage the affairs of the three heavens.
Never treat this as a small matter.
Consider the weight of this responsibility — heavy as a mountain.
Do not pine for the games and pleasures of school.
The fruit of cultivation is sweetness after bitterness.
Studying is only for fame and profit —
struggling in the red dust, how many years will it last?
The bright moon still shines across the great thousand worlds,
yet the heroes of the past lie sleeping in the mud.
Consider carefully: all things are illusory.
Cultivation alone can prove the joy of eighteen thousand years.
A model for one generation, a fragrance for a hundred —
the wise see through it early, with clear eyes.
Having encountered the third period and received the Heavenly Way,
embody heaven's compassion and the Teacher's generous grace.
Knowing grace, repay it — exert yourself fully.
Fear nothing, dread nothing — press forward with courage.
If you meet with misfortune, endure with patience.
Since ancient times, the scholar who suffers hardship gains renown.
When your merit is accomplished and the great task done,
only then will the man who spans heaven and earth be revealed.
Disciples, follow this instruction and press forward with effort.
One labor, eternal rest — and your ancestors at peace.

Thus instructed, the brush is collected. I do not descend the tablet. I bow before heaven. Farewell, worthy disciples. Ha ha! Withdraw.

Session IV — The Twelfth Day of the Second Month

The company launches the boat of bodhi.
Bear the heavy responsibility of saving the worthy and the brilliant.
In all affairs, follow heaven and respond to humanity.
Welcome those above, guide those below — it takes all your heart.
Since the mandate is upon your body, exert yourself fully.
Awaken the foolish and benighted, increasing their wisdom.
A thousand-pound burden — benevolence is the task.
Above and below, one body — exhaust your loyalty and filial devotion.

I am Yuehui Bodhisattva. Bearing the command, today I arrive at the altar. I bow before the Heavenly Chariot. Taking up the jade balance, I address my disciples with a few words of instruction. Ha ha!

Steer the boat and steer it steady. Pull the towline with undivided mind. The river surges. The wind howls. Fog rises, thick and swirling. Direction is hard to find. Be careful! Be careful! Keep to the course. One moment's lapse, and countless lives are lost. Ha ha!

Heaven and humanity meet — they sail the boat of compassion.
Cultivate both your mandate and your nature — establish the Lotus Realm.
Fortune turns and changes swift as lightning.
Heaven's mysterious designs are hidden in the moment.
Through tests of fortune and adversity, let your resolve not waver.
Within invisible tempering, a wonderful method is concealed.
In the dark sky, when the sun sets, the bright moon appears.
In secret, the true method is arranged to select the worthy.

Heaven's tests above select the loyal and the filial.
On earth below, it examines those whose will is firm as steel.
Guard your constant thought with settled mind and will.
Plant in spring, tend in summer — do not leave the field to waste.
Fortune answers the White Sun — the assembly of the third period.
The count reaches the autumn harvest — the final gathering.
Having cultivated the Dao to this auspicious day,
each of you fulfill your great vows — hurry and press forward!
Opening in the east, proclaiming in the west — the gathering is underway.
Remove greed, abandon desire — let the light of your nature shine full.
The great examination opens — select the extraordinary talent.
Study the Dao, understand principle — comprehend the eternal truth.
Each unfurl your stride and run toward the road ahead.
War has broken out across the world — there is no easy path.
Take up the duty without yielding — compete for the fruit of merit.
When the Dao is accomplished, ancestors are honored and children blessed.

The arts of demons and deviant methods spring up everywhere.
Those whose study is not upright bring chaos to the nation.
Strange methods develop with astonishing power —
surpassing even science in their wondrous range.
When vital energy reaches its fixed limit, occult arts flourish.
Material civilization destroys the radiant light.
Hold steady among the ten thousand teachings — steer the boat firmly.
Emulate the sages and the worthy — let the way of culture rise.
Deviant gates spring up across the land.
Strange spirits and bizarre marvels — words cannot describe them.
When the true Way is hidden, heresy appears.
Flowery words and clever speech — wild and rampant.
They move mountains, overturn seas, call wind and rain.
Mountains collapse, the earth splits, the sun goes dark.

When the boat meets ocean waves, proceed with caution.
Never scatter in panic and lose your bearings.
Set your target, fulfill your vow —
walk toward the light of the White Sun altar.
Adapt to the times, transform on heaven's behalf.
When fortune arrives, the ten thousand teachings return to one home.
Embody the ancestral virtue, the Teacher's compassion.
Discern your direction clearly — hurry and press on!
When the son of eighteen shows his head,
all things are renewed — the Lotus Realm appears.
One act of the White Sun drama performed to the end —
the one in humble cloth and straw-sandals reveals their glory.
In Maitreya's bag, ten thousand forms are held.
The whole earth is stored inside it.
The great assembly at the Central Plain — the joy of eighteen thousand years!
Sing of merit, praise of virtue — an extraordinary bond.
When the run of ill fortune is past, the Great Unity appears.
The world of utmost happiness — boundless and vast!
Exert yourselves, exhaust your hearts, help the final assembly —
when fortune turns to prosperity, restore the realm of Yao.
This is heaven's ordained number.
Forever enjoy the freedom of returning to your original home. Ha ha!

The Teacher Mother offers a passage of instruction. My disciples, contemplate it carefully. How much longer remains for establishing merit? Press forward with effort. Look at the present moment — understand the future's pivot. Recognize your responsibility and position. Become the standard for all. Rectify your heart, cultivate your person, master yourself. Then transform the multitudes — help them return to principle. As the head of an altar, your responsibility is not small — understand it fully. Reflect upon it with caution and reverence. Never act carelessly or turn things upside down. In your work, be cautious yet courageous. Obey the command, keep your words measured. Welcome those above, guide those below, transform the multitudes. On heaven's behalf, awaken the confused. With loyal heart burning, with unwavering devotion, assist the final gathering. Advance with warmth, humility, and deference. In carrying out your duties, maintain dignity and completeness. In your dealings with the world, first correct yourself — then things are accomplished without commands, naturally so. Watch your step and observe the moment. Do not invite tests of the demon upon yourself. A thousand gates, ten thousand teachings all spread wide — do not be lured into the abyss. Fix your eyes on the road ahead — steer the boat and save the worthy. Examine yourself thrice daily — do not discuss others' rights and wrongs. Exhaust your heart and exert yourself — press forward. In the end, bitterness yields sweetness. Heaven has no favorites — it assists only the virtuous, and this it makes fully known. Each of you, fulfill your vows and run forward. Do not fear the wind and frost or the cold.

Never seek your own good alone.
Establish yourself, then establish others — hold to what is upright.
Lead and transform your fellow beings across the great thousand —
together board the August Mother's compassionate ship.
Hear the Teacher Mother's instruction and exhortation.
Do not fall back into confusion and sleep.

Thus instructed, the writing ceases. I bow before the Heavenly Chariot. I collect the golden planchette and withdraw from the altar. Ha ha! Withdraw.

Session V — The Thirteenth Day of the Second Month

Manage the gathering — the final act of completion.
Follow the command, shoulder the duty, ferry the three realms.
The great task depends on the united strength of all.
Share the Teacher's burden and save the worthy and the brave.
Adapt with authority and skill; know the times and their demands.
Value the sacred over the worldly; establish virtue high.
The consequences of good and evil — the principle of cause and fruit.
See through it clearly: one step of receiving the Dao transcends all.

I am Yuehui Bodhisattva. Bearing an imperial decree, today I arrive at the island altar. I bow before the Imperial Chariot. I take up the planchette to announce and instruct. Ha ha!

The valley wind is gentle, blowing softly. The sun hides behind the western hills. The bright moon rises in the east. Stars cluster, one beside another. The quiet of the cold night. The rain drips, drips, drips. The dust of worldly toil — when will it cease? The dark road, steep and winding. The traveler's path — thick with thorns. Step by step, watch your footing, know the times. Let the mountains loom high, let the seas stretch wide — you must reach the destination. Let the wild wind howl, let the storm rage — you will not change from centrality and righteousness. White waves and dark clouds rush from east to west. Establish your extraordinary merit! Ha ha!

All who cultivate the Dao: fix your compass.
Never act rashly — obey the command in all things.
Clouds of sorrow stretch everywhere — the test of darkness.
Each of you hold fast to the true principle and do not let it go.
Recognize your own responsibility clearly.
On heaven's behalf, proclaim and transform — cautious yet alert.
On all four sides, the smoke of wolves, the wild wind rises.
The third great trial — war clouds gather.

The sound of wind, the sound of rain, the sound of waves —
sound upon sound, linked together, startling the lost from their crossing.
Heaven's affairs, the Buddhas' affairs, the affairs of the human world —
each and every one demands the disciple's painstaking heart.
Act with caution, speak with restraint, weigh your steps.
Never invite tests or demons to cling to your body.
You cannot go too far, nor fall too short.
Hold the two extremes and use the center — follow heaven's heart.
Establish merit, build virtue, advance on the road ahead.
Exhaust your own strength — cultivate on heaven's behalf.
When entrusted by another, repay with a loyal heart.
Sacrifice everything and give your full devotion.
When entrusted by heaven — what then?
If your body were ground to dust, the debt of grace would still remain.

Distinguish the true from the false, the light from the heavy.
Accept your destiny, trust heaven — do not blame others.
Be nimble, seize the moment, act as the occasion calls.
Do not be rigid — or you will invite the test upon yourself.
This turning of the mandate carries hidden purpose —
winnowing the cultivators, judging the false from the true.
All disciples: heed the Teacher Mother's words.
In your dealings with the world, watch your step at every turn.

Sweep away appearances — advance with care.
Lest behind your back, others whisper of you.
Sweep away contention — embrace loyalty and righteousness.
Lest the storm descend upon your own body.
Sweep away self-image — follow what is good when you see it.
Lest arrogance and presumption make you their master.
Sweep away selfishness — preserve centrality and uprightness.
Lest bias and partiality rouse the wrathful heart.
Sweep away idle thoughts — embrace non-action.
Lest hesitation and doubt make your heart impure.
Sweep away the fear of difficulty and the urge to retreat.
Lest complacency cost you your righteousness and humanity.

With one heart and one virtue, hasten on the road ahead.
Honor the Teacher, value the Way — this is the standard.
Do not follow your own temperament at will.
The sky is dark, the path is forked — do not run blindly.
One wrong step brings a thousand years of regret.
How deep the sorrow — it may wound the spirit.
In your dealings with the world, obey the command and follow the dispatch.
Know your place, follow what comes — step by step, steady.
Come when called, go when waved — do not refuse the hardship.
Under the stars, wearing the moon — never decline.
Exhaust your heart, on heaven's behalf — manage the great task.
Redouble your effort and build your merit.
With devoted faith and broad love, hold sincerity and reverence.
Proclaim and spread the precious virtue of the Way.
The noble person who is not weighty lacks authority.
If propriety is lost, chaos follows — how can you lead others?
Lead by example — transform your fellow beings.
Emulate heaven, emulate earth — become a true worthy.

Take advantage of this brief, auspicious day.
Fulfill your vows and press forward — the season of opportunity is now.
With talent and virtue combined, observe the moment and advance.
Know the times and their demands — follow heaven's heart.
To do good work, first sharpen the tools.
If your own heart is not right, how can you right others?
With virtue and talent, manage affairs on heaven's behalf.
Without ability, how can you bear the responsibility?
The foundation of eighteen thousand years waits for you to prove it.
When the great task is accomplished, a fragrance for ten thousand generations.

A final word to my disciples — remember it well.
With utmost sincerity, never ceasing — be pure and devoted.

Thus announced, the planchette is collected. I bow before the Heavenly Chariot. Farewell, disciples — I return from the altar to the celestial palace. Ha ha! Withdraw.

Session VI — The Fourteenth Day of the Second Month

Attain the original and awaken to the true self.
Ferry the people and save the world — transform this realm of suffering.
The Way is true, the principle is true, the Heavenly Mandate is precious.
With one pointing, a person escapes the realm of the dead.
The worthy become sages; the foolish become worthy.
Resolve the ties of dust — transcend the five elements.
The disciples take up the decree and answer the call of the season.
When vows are fulfilled and principle is clear — arrive at the Buddha Realm.

I am Yuehui Bodhisattva. Bearing a holy decree, today I arrive at the Buddha Hall. I bow before the Heavenly Chariot. Taking up the jade balance, I write once more. Ha ha!

The stranded fish finds water and swims free. The rain-soaked plant lifts its head. The seamless lock — today it is opened. One step, and you transcend the sea of suffering. Heaven's grace and bounty — like a dog carrying a grass ring, a crow carrying a twig — repay it quickly, quickly! Advance toward the light. See through fame and profit early. Awaken to your original self. Cultivate your spiritual tower. Ha ha!

Heaven's time and heaven's fortune — both press from two sides.
The principle has its fixed count; the mandate is hard to defy.
The vast catastrophe descends everywhere — it is made by human hands.
It grows more violent, more extreme — terrifying beyond measure.
How lamentable that the people of the world still do not awaken,
chasing the waves and following the current, refusing to turn back.
Material civilization has intoxicated humanity.
The heart-method of nature and principle — who still pursues it?
In the vast, boundless catastrophe, people feel no fear —
fish in a boiling pot, still swimming at their ease.
Abandoning the root to chase the branches, infatuated with form,
yet all that has form will perish — this principle cannot be defied.

Understand the origin of human life.
The mandate of heaven — that is the bright virtue of your nature.
In the sage it is not increased; in the ordinary person it is not diminished.
Unborn and undying — the radiant light of your nature.
Yet nature, stained by desire, corrupts the heart day by day.
The bonds of morality are swept away; the wind of the age decays.
Fathers are not fathers; sons are not sons.
Brothers are at odds — day after day, wrong upon wrong.
Greed, deception, cunning schemes — words cannot exhaust them.
Strange and bizarre — layer upon layer.
Natural disasters and human calamities advance relentlessly.
Science and the occult arts destroy each other.
The world hurtles toward its shared destruction.
Heaven, earth, and the ten thousand things all face annihilation.

But heaven cannot bear to harm the faithful.
The great Way saves you — return to your original home.
Understand the purpose of cultivating the Dao.
Press forward on the road ahead — swiftly establish virtue.
If you wish to survive this present age,
embrace the Way and practice it — never betray the principle.
Following your nature — that is the road back to heaven.
The way of the measuring-square — the rule for dealing with the world.
Impartially manage affairs in accord with heaven's will.
Great benevolence, great righteousness — put them into practice on the ground.
Only then can ill fortune be turned to prosperity.
Only then will the Great Unity appear and the people live in peace.

This is the Path of Awakening to True Cultivation.
Follow it and walk — pursue the road ahead.
Establish yourself, then establish others — transform on heaven's behalf.
Exhaust your heart and exert your strength — repay heaven's virtue.
One labor, eternal rest — eighteen thousand years.
Ancestors are honored, the family name shines bright.

The Path of Awakening to True Cultivation now comes to its end.
All my disciples: engrave this in your hearts as a guide.

Thus written, the instruction is not further displayed. I bow before the Heavenly Chariot. Farewell, my worthy disciples — I withdraw from the altar. Ha ha! Withdraw.

The Mother's Admonitions

Mother's instructions:

One. In the family, above and below, treat all equally. Make no distinctions. Let elders be kind and juniors filial. Encourage one another. Let the older ones set an example at home by transforming those around them. Let each person subdue their own body and mind. Do not suspect or misunderstand one another. In matters of money, let what comes be clear and what goes be clear. Brothers and sisters, each bear your own responsibility, each give your full heart. Let everyone be joyful and harmonious as one. Set up a great aspiration. Let friends and relatives follow your example. Do not disgrace the honor of being brothers and sisters in the Buddha's household. Those who follow this instruction — I guarantee a share of purity and stillness. Those who refuse to follow and insist on their own way — their suffering will be without end. I hope all in the household, great and small, will put this into practice. From beginning to end, hold steady as one.

Two. Trust is the foundation. Without trust, nothing stands. Say one thing and do another, and no one will respect you. You will harm yourself alone. There will be no road to walk. You will not be able to establish merit. You will have wasted the road ahead.

Three. If in the past you were careless and sloppy, and you did not recognize your faults — look back now and ask yourself: can you face yourself without shame? Have you wasted the light of your days? If someone offers you correction, receive it gladly. First find your own weaknesses. Remove the root of the illness, and it will never return. Only then can you be called a complete person.

Four. When a person has an illness, most do not know it. If you have an illness, you must examine yourself. Ask yourself which kind of illness you suffer from. Heal yourself first — only then can you heal others.

Five. Discuss things with one another. Let go of what is short; keep what is long. When someone has a strength, let everyone emulate it. When someone has a weakness, let everyone counsel them gently. When others point out your faults, always receive it with gratitude and acceptance. From then on, do not commit the same fault again. You must have constancy. Establish a great aspiration. Become a worthy person.

Six. When a person of real ability and good character falls on hard times, do not hide the difficulty from them. Everyone wants to be strong and to look respectable. When a good person faces hardship, you should rightly help them. Wait for their fortune to turn and for them to become a great instrument. Only then can you be called a person of righteousness and virtue.

Seven. Those whose illness cannot be healed — let everyone be made aware. Do not catch their contagion and ruin your whole life. Once lost, it cannot be recovered. What a pity that would be.

Eight. For small faults, you should awaken on your own. Correct them immediately. Repent in your heart. Examine your conduct. Practice in earnest. Do not ruin the road ahead.

Nine. In all things, clarity is essential. Time is short. If you first clear your faults and then build merit, you may still achieve something. But if you first build merit and then commit faults, everything is wiped clean in a stroke. All prior merit is lost. The days will never be enough. How pitiable.

Ten. Time is precious — each moment is worth a thousand gold pieces. You have made great vows: to maintain purity, to keep a vegetarian mouth, to practice clean cultivation. You have endured every hardship and difficulty. And here you have arrived at the very time when Buddhahood bears fruit — a single moment remains. I fear you will not see through the moment clearly. Heaven does not wait for anyone. You must be pure inside and out. Guard against the scrutiny of the immortals and Buddhas. Time is short. Separate the tiger's tail clearly. When the examination is past, the immortals and Buddhas will see all. In the Mao year, the judgment is fixed. Who can change it? The genuine will be joyful. The false will come to nothing. It was settled long ago. Do not ruin the road ahead. See through the moment. Examine what is within. Those who lead must bear responsibility. Fulfill your great vow. Follow the truth and put it into practice. Establish genuine merit. Let your household be joyful. When the catastrophe comes, be undisturbed. Clear through to the very end — never falter. These are true and honest words, told to you all. Every person take heed. You cannot take this lightly. With constancy and resolve, the great task will be accomplished.

The Hundred-Cure Pill

Issued on the thirtieth day of the fifth month, Gengyin year (1950).

Dishonesty and falseness. Reaching for the sky while ignoring the ground. Fabricating compassionate instructions. Boasting and seeking victory. Suppressing everything around you. Forming factions and splitting into parties. Saying one thing and doing another. Mouth not matching heart. Laziness and slacking. Greed and delusion. Anger and jealousy. Wasting money and materials. Suspicion and misunderstanding. Not accounting clearly for what comes and goes. Not distinguishing sacred from worldly. Using public resources for private ends. Spreading rumors of right and wrong. Hoarding power and seizing authority. Covering up ugliness and concealing evil. Biased and deviant views. Scheming and playing tricks. Losing propriety and acting licentiously. Obstinate and willful. Stealing others' merit for your own fame. Diminishing others to magnify yourself. Deceiving those above and hiding things from those below.

These are the various sources of illness. Not everyone commits all of them. Some commit none — good for them. But if you are guilty of even one or two, and you see this Hundred-Cure Pill, remove them at once. If you carry these diseases and do not remove them, they will damage your body. You will ruin your own life.

Regret will come too late.

Take heed. Take heed. Remove the disease.

Colophon

The Path of Awakening to True Cultivation (修真覺路) is a Yiguandao spirit-writing revelation received over six consecutive days in the second month of the Wuzi year (1948 CE) and supplemented with the Mother's Admonitions and the Hundred-Cure Pill from 1950. The speaker is Yuehui Bodhisattva — the celestial title of Sun Huiming (孫慧明), the Teacher Mother and co-patriarch of Yiguandao — who delivered these sessions in the year following the death of her partner Zhang Tianran and on the eve of the Communist revolution. The text captures a woman carrying the weight of an entire religious movement through its darkest hour, correcting her followers with a mother's mixture of love and severity.

First English translation. A Good Works Translation — translated from Classical Chinese (七言詩, seven-character verse, and 文言文 prose) for the Good Work Library by the New Tianmu Anglican Church, 2026. Gospel register. Tulku Míngquán (明泉).
