A word-by-word commentary on Dharmakirti's Examination of Relations (Sambandha-pariksa), composed by the Indian Buddhist logician Vinitadeva (c. 7th-8th century CE). Vinitadeva was one of the most important commentators in the Pramana tradition, renowned for his clear and systematic expositions of Dharmakirti's compressed logical treatises. This commentary takes up each phrase of Dharmakirti's root text and explains its meaning, demonstrating that no proposed form of relation — whether dependence on another, blending of natures, mutual regard, conjunction, inherence, or causation — exists as a real entity.

The text is preserved in the Dege Tengyur (D4236), in the Pramana section. It was translated into Tibetan from Sanskrit by the Indian scholar Jnanagarbha and the Tibetan translator Bande Namkha. No English translation of this text has previously existed. This is the first.

Homage to the youthful Manjushri.

That all beings have no relation,
That which the Guide of Beings taught —
Having bowed to that one,
I shall explain the Examination of Relations.

"Wishing to eliminate relation as a real entity" — this opening phrase shows the connection, the subject matter, and the purpose of this treatise. Otherwise, a treatise lacking connection, subject matter, and purpose would not be worth taking up.

Here, the phrase "relation as a real entity" indicates the subject matter. The phrase "wishing to eliminate" indicates the purpose — for the elimination of relation as a real entity is the purpose here. The phrase "one said" indicates the connection — for in order to eliminate relation as a real entity, this treatise was taught.

Therefore, the treatise is taught as merely the method for eliminating relation as a real entity. For by hearing this treatise, one will become certain that relation as a real entity does not exist. Thus the treatise is the method, and the elimination of relation as a real entity is the result of that method. These two — the treatise and the purpose — are connected as method and result of method.

This is the general meaning. The particular meaning of "as a real entity" extends through "substantially existent," "ultimate," "unfabricated," and "unexamined." "Relation" means "that which relates" — it is indicated by the terms "that which possesses conjunction," "contact," "meeting," and "proximity of things." "Wishing to eliminate, one said" means wishing to individually eliminate, wishing to individually abandon — that is the meaning.

"Dependence on another alone" and so forth indicates the verse. "Dependence on another" means depending on something else. The word "dependence on another" is explained by the phrase "depending on something else" — that is, "relating to another," "depending on another," "relying on another," and "being under another's power" are synonymous.

"If that is relation" — some hold that dependence on another alone is relation. "Is this of one whose relata are established or unestablished?" Here, "having relation" means "possessor of relation." "Established" means having obtained its own nature. "Unestablished" means not having obtained its own nature. The word "or" has the meaning of examination.

This is what is taught: If the relata of the unestablished nature, or of the nature of the unestablished, are the dependence on another — since the unestablished has the nature of being non-existent, relation does not exist as a real entity. For if the relata are unestablished, being of non-existent nature, then since they are of unestablished nature, how could relation exist as a real entity?

"If the relata are established, what dependence on another could there be?" — when the relata have obtained their own nature, then since the relata have no need, what would they depend on, such that one would hold them to be under another's power? The word "what" here is not a question but a negation — the meaning is that there is no dependence on another whatsoever.

"Therefore there is no relation" means: therefore the relation of dependence on another does not exist. "Even if established, there is something slightly unestablished" — this is the opponent saying: we do not hold that what is established in every respect is under another's power. However, even though the relata are established, some parts are unestablished, and for the purpose of establishing those, the relata are held to be under another's power.

Therefore, "such conceptualization too would not become dependence on another alone, for the purpose of establishing that" — this phrase negates it. Even through the avenue of establishing such partial aspects, dependence on another is untenable. Why? Because "it does not transcend the conceptual analysis arising from the established and the unestablished" — "the established and the unestablished" means the established and the unestablished, that is, the side of the established and the side of the unestablished.

Those that possess the character of arising from the established and the unestablished are "arising from the established and the unestablished." "Conceptual analysis of faults" — by the word "conceptual analysis," demonstration is indicated here. What is both arising from the established and the unestablished and also a fault — that is the compound.

Those do not transcend it. Therefore, because it does not transcend the conceptual analysis of faults arising from the established and the unestablished — so it is said. This is what is taught: whatever faults belong to the side of established nature, and whatever faults belong to the side of unestablished nature — all of these are present in this position as well. For those parts that are established are not amenable to another's power, because they are already established. And the unestablished, being of non-existent nature, do not constitute relation as a real entity in the form of another's power.

"Both the established and the unestablished natures do not exist in a single entity" — in a single entity, neither the established nor the unestablished nature exists. For what is without parts is accepted as a real entity. What possesses parts exists conventionally. Since, as explained, neither the established nor the other's dependence on another alone exists — by the manner stated, dependence on another of neither the established nor the unestablished is tenable. For the side of the established has no dependence on another alone, and the side of the unestablished also does not sustain relation as a real entity in the form of another's power.

"Therefore, the relation of all things does not exist as a real entity" — this is the conclusion: the relation of all things, characterized by dependence on another, does not ultimately exist. "As a real entity" explains "truly." "What is posited by conceptualization is not negated" — whatever dependence on another is posited by conceptual thought, that is not negated. Why? Because "there is no real entity" — since the dependence on another produced by conceptual thought does not exist as a real entity, it is not negated.

"If blending of natures is relation, and not dependence on another alone" — perhaps one says: I do not assert that relation is characterized by dependence on another. Then what? It is characterized by blending of natures. The blending of the natures of two, or of the natures — that is the blending of natures, meaning the meeting of one's own natures.

That is untenable. The explanation of "being two" is "if the natures of the two relata" — this is what is taught: if relata here are natures alone, then "that blending of natures too" — by the term "blending of natures," the characteristic of the identity of one's own nature is expressed. How could there be identity of one's own nature? The explanation of this is "it would not become so" — this is a negation, not a question.

This is what is taught: so long as the natures of the two relata are not abandoned, the blending characterized by the identity of their own natures — how could it come about? If at the time of relation the natures become identical — then "even if they become one, since the two relata do not exist, what relation is there?" — if the relata become one, then since the two relata do not exist, relation itself is utterly unestablished. Why? "Because relation has its basis in many" — if the basis of relation is manifold, and the two relata do not exist, that relation — how could it exist?

If one says that blending of natures does not mean the identity of natures but rather the absence of an interval — then "though it be so, what is there to negate? If the term 'blending of natures' is applied to the absence of an interval, then it is well spoken indeed — I do not negate that. The absence of an interval is merely the absence of an interval, and relation as a real entity would not thereby exist." Here, "without interval" means "separated from an interval." The term "interval" should be understood as a gap. The nature of being without interval is the absence of an interval.

If the term "blending of natures" is applied to the absence of an interval, then what objection is being raised? However, relation as a real entity is not established. Furthermore, "if the absence of an interval is relation, why not also accept relation when there is an interval?" — if one accepts that abiding without an interval constitutes relation called "absence of interval," then why not also accept that abiding separately constitutes a relation called "with interval"? For in both cases, the two relata do not differ in abiding in their own natures. Just as the two relata do not abandon their former nature when blended, so too when abiding separately they have not lost their former nature. Therefore, just as one holds the two relata to be related when without interval, so too should one hold them related when with interval — or else one should not accept relation in either case.

"Contact and such too are merely gathered in the meaning of the absence of an interval, so do not speak of them" — whatever has the character of being gathered in the meaning of the absence of an interval — those are gathered merely in the absence of an interval. What is indicated as the absence of an interval is also indicated as contact. The term "and such" indicates proximity, touching, and uninterruptedness.

Since contact and such are synonyms for the absence of an interval, it is greatly untenable to teach them here as something different. Since the blending of natures is also not relation — here the word "indeed" is a sentence-filler. "Therefore, for things of different nature" — the explanation is: below, all things having different self-natures — for all those things, relation does not truly exist. Ultimately, they have no relation characterized by blending of natures. "Except for what is superimposed by conceptualization" — the relation conceived by conceptual thought is not negated.

"If mutual regard is relation, and not blending of natures" — perhaps one says: I do not accept that the character of blending of natures is relation. Then what? I assert that the character of regard is relation. Therefore, the previously stated faults do not apply.

Here too, on the side where mutual regard makes things related — those that are other, such as sprouts, have regard for seeds and such. When the sprouts and such have regard, if they are accepted as related by the character of regard — there are two examinations: does what exists have regard, or does what does not exist have regard? "What exists" means what is established and exists in its own nature. "What does not exist" means what is not established and does not exist in its own nature.

"If it does not exist" — first, if one accepts the regard of what does not exist, "then how can what does not exist have regard?" — the explanation of this is: "since a thing not established in its own nature has no property of regard." Whatever has not obtained and not achieved its own nature — how could it come to have regard? The word "since" should be understood as "therefore" — "since it does not exist, what relation of what is there?" — therefore, there is no relation characterized by regard whatsoever, nor does it belong to anything.

"If it exists, it depends on none" — whatever has obtained its complete own nature in every respect has no need whatsoever. The explanation of this is: "a thing that has produced its complete own nature and has no regard." Since its nature is complete in every respect, by what form of regard would one accept relation — what aspect of regard constitutes dependence on another? "The remainder should be stated as with dependence on another" — whatever remainder is to be stated here, it should be stated as was stated in the examination of dependence on another.

These three forms of relation are examined with respect to those who accept that relation is not different from the self-nature of the relata — that is, for those proponents who include relation within the relata themselves and use the term "relation" for the nature of the relata. This is taught for their sake.

Now, in order to eliminate those proponents who accept a relation with a nature different from the relata — "so that these faults do not arise here" — so that the faults demonstrated for the three forms of relation on the side of the relata's own nature do not arise here.

"Two" — the explanation of this is "the two relata." Thus there are two relata. Therefore those two are of a single relation — "a single relation" means below "a single conjunction."

"The conjunction expressed as a quality, a single thing of different meaning" — this is the single thing that is expressed as a quality and has a different meaning from the relata, named conjunction. "Or a property of non-difference" — or a nature not different from the relata, a property of the distinction of occasions designated by name. "Or an inexpressible real entity" — what is neither the same as nor different from, a substantially existent nature inexpressible as either.

"Therefore, if by the cause of manifest relation with that single thing one holds them to be related" — if by a cause of different meaning, or of non-different meaning, or of an inexpressible cause of manifest relation, the two relata are held to be mutually related — then on the side where relation is held to be of non-different meaning, "the two relata would be merely conceptual" — on that side, the two relata would become merely conceptual. For if the two relata are said to be related by the cause of relation, on that side relation does not ultimately exist. Therefore, even without relation, the relata would be accepted. "There would be no relation whatsoever" — when the two relata are merely conceptual, there would ultimately be no relation whatsoever.

"Even so, since the relata are not other than the relation, because they have become one" — if the two relata are not different from the single relation, then since the two relata do not exist, whose relation is it? Relation has its basis in many — without the two relata, how could it exist?

"And the inexpressible real entity too, by the manner of reasoning, does not transcend the conceptual analysis of different and non-different meaning" — whoever accepts an inexpressible real entity — that is established as either of different meaning or of non-different meaning by the manner of reasoning. For since everything is included under the two — different meaning and non-different meaning — a real entity must be one or the other. Since that is so, on the side of non-different meaning there is no relation and no relata whatsoever.

Thus the fault of the inexpressible nature on the side of non-different meaning has been shown. The fault of the inexpressible nature on the side of different meaning will be understood from the section below on the elimination of conjunction. Thus the sides of non-difference and of the inexpressible have been eliminated.

"Let relation, whether of different meaning or otherwise, exist" — what use is such tight restriction? Whether relation is of different meaning or not — "yet what is the relation of that with the two?" The explanation of this is "what is the relation of that single thing with the two?" — whatever relation serves as a cause by which the two relata are held to be related — what is the relation between that cause and the two relata?

The meaning of conceptualization alone causes things to blend. Conceptualization itself causes things to blend. "It produces a sign resembling the nature of dependence on another" — conceptualization grasps some slight sign and presents things as having the nature of dependence on another.

Through the avenues of providing livelihood and obeying commands, one conceives of the relation between king and subject, master and servant. Through the non-difference of the universal and the particular, and through the occasion of the universal being imputed, one conceives of the relation between "branch of a tree" — the particular and the possessor of parts. Through the avenues of depending on it for arising and following its lineage, one presents the relation of cause and effect — "the sprout of the seed." Through the avenues of initiating with wisdom and following its conduct, one presents the relation of the character of the root of discipline — "teacher and student."

Therefore, conceptualization itself makes things related — ultimately, there is no blending. Thus the relation of the entity of master and servant and such has been negated.

Wishing also to negate the relation of action and agent — the explanation of "that" is "conceptualization." In the verse, "of that too" — the word "too" has the meaning of "also." "By the person who follows" — by the living being who follows conceptualization, that is the meaning. "The word of action and agent" — the explanation of this is "the word of action and the word of agent."

Some are words of action, as in "cooks," "reads," and such. Some are words of agent, as for instance "Devadatta cooks rice in a pot." "The proponents establish" — the explanation of this is: "This is expressing action, this is expressing agent — they establish the words."

Why are designations made? Why are conventions established? "In order to understand the differentiation of things" — the explanation of this is: "the differentiation of things is the exclusion of others." "In order to comprehend that" — at the time of understanding, the words of action and agent make conventions in order to generate the understanding that excludes others.

For instance, in order to exclude the agent other than Devadatta, the word "Devadatta" is conjoined. Similarly, in order to exclude the action of grass, leaves, and such, the word "with wood" is established. In order to exclude the bases of bronze vessels, ladles, and such, "pot" is conjoined. In order to exclude the object of vegetables, legumes, and such, "rice" is conjoined. In order to exclude the action of preparing a feast, the word "cooking" is established. Similarly, other cases should be stated as appropriate.

"The relation of action and agent does not really exist" — the relation of action and agent also does not ultimately exist. For the relation of action and agent too is established only if the relation characterized by dependence on another and such is established — and that has already been eliminated by the manner stated. The relation of that which is to be accomplished and that which accomplishes, or that which is established and that which establishes — that too is the relation of cause and effect itself. And the relation characterized by the entity of cause and effect will also be eliminated below — so what relation is there characterized by action and agent?

"Even if there is a relation characterized by cause and effect" — perhaps the opponent says: though those previously stated relations have not been established, the relation characterized by cause and effect is established. "Then one examines" — the examination of whether the cause exists at the time of the effect, or does not exist at the time of the effect.

"The thing of cause and effect — that entity, at the time of which does it become a relatum?" — is the thing of the cause, at the time of the effect, existent or non-existent? The meaning of "the thing of a real entity abiding in two" is "that which is relation" — a real entity of a thing abiding in two is called relation. "From that" — the explanation is "that which is manifestly connected with two meanings." "If the character of its relation is untenable" — the character of its relation, which is another, is untenable. "By what would the distinction from number and such be established?" — by what reason would one accept a characteristic different from number and such?

This is what is taught: if no character of relation other than being manifestly connected with two meanings can be expressed, by what reason would one accept a characteristic different from number and such?

Here too, the opponents say: "If something exists when it exists" — if the seed exists, the sprout exists. "If it does not exist, it does not exist" — if the seed does not exist, the sprout does not exist. "The existence and non-existence of both" — the existence of both the seed and the sprout, "the existence and non-existence of which" — the existence and non-existence of the relata of seed and sprout. "The conjunction distinguished by that — whatever it is — that is relation." The conjunction distinguished by the observation of both existing and not existing — whatever it is — that is relation.

"Why should this not be cause and effect alone?" — if the conjunction distinguished by existence and non-existence is accepted as relation, then the existence and non-existence that distinguish the conjunction themselves would become the things of cause and effect. Why is there a different relation, other than cause and effect, that constitutes relation?

The sequential nature of cause and effect has already been explained. Therefore, the thing possessing the character of cause, engaging at one time and place, is without regard for the effect — it is not relation. Since there is no distinct relation, being a relatum is stated, and since that does not exist, the nature of relation is also absent.

"If one says: the cause depends on the effect, and the effect is the cause's effect — therefore there is mutual regard, and from that there is relation" — that too is not so. For one looking at one of those, the engagement of the other is required — and how can what does not exist come to have regard? When the cause does not exist, the effect alone is not possible — therefore it is merely the convention of dependence, but for what exists, there is not the slightest meaning of dependence on existence.

Whether the cause alone or the effect alone pertains to both the existent and the non-existent — the cause, distinguished by the non-existence of the subsequent, is the existent and non-existent. Likewise, distinguished by the non-existence of the prior, the effect is the existent and non-existent. This is what is taught: the prior's existence and non-existence, with regard to the subsequent, is causality. With regard to the prior's existence and non-existence, the subsequent is the effect — not cause alone or effect alone pertaining to both.

What is next to exist — whatever possesses the property of being about to exist, if it exists, that existence is explained as "what is intended as the cause existing." Therefore the meaning of the phrase becomes: for the effect that possesses the property of being about to arise immediately, the cause necessarily exists. For the cause's being a cause is being necessarily proximate to that effect's immediate arising. This conveys the converse as well: existing, not non-existing. Thus: what is intended as the cause is necessarily proximate — what is not proximate is not so.

The causal relation — established through direct perception and non-apprehension. That is, the relation of cause and effect is established, for it is renowned. By what is it established? Through direct perception and non-apprehension.

Yet if some things that produce an effect generate conjunction, and one accepts them as related by conjunction — then one must ask: at the time of producing, the thing to be produced has not yet arisen, for the effect arises in the next moment. At that time the effect does not yet exist. So how is there accumulation? If not — then because the two of cause and effect do not assemble together — there is no assembly. And when the effect has arisen, the cause has ceased — so there is no assembly then either.

Thus accumulation itself is untenable — this has been shown. Now, even granting that there is some accumulation — "it is not because of producing" — one should not accept it as accumulation on the grounds that it produces. Why? Because the absurdity is great. A potter too, because he produces a pot, would become related — the very overextension is shown.

Furthermore, the universal and the possessor of qualities — two things that do not mutually benefit each other — cannot be related by the character of accumulation. For the universal is permanent and therefore cannot be something to be produced. Even if one says there exists some accumulation that is of the nature of a possessor of parts, expressed as the effect of producing — the proponents of established ends reply: only when something accumulates with something does it produce the effect, but at the time of production the thing to be produced has not arisen. At that time, how is there accumulation?

"When there is no assembly of the two" — at that time, cause and effect do not assemble together. "When the effect has arisen, because the cause has ceased" — when the effect has arisen, the cause has ceased, so there is no assembly. "Even if they have not ceased, for two things abiding simultaneously there is no entity of benefit and benefited" — even if one holds that cause and effect assemble, at that time for two things assembled at one time there is no entity of benefiting and being benefited, so relation is utterly untenable.

Thus, accumulation alone has been shown to be untenable. Now one raises an objection from what has been accepted: "Even if some accumulation exists, it is not because of producing, for the absurdity is great. A potter too, because he produces a pot, would become related."

Therefore the relation of all things is without relation in their own nature — since, when one thus examines, no relation whatsoever exists. Therefore all things are of a nature free from relation in their own natures. Ultimately, there is no relation of anything whatsoever — this is the conclusion.

"The word of suitability, when expressed, determines the nature of a thing" — therefore, by the word of suitability, the nature of the real thing itself is to be expressed — nothing more than suitability should be accepted. By what is it expressed? "By disjunction and conjunction and going and such" — the explanation is "by the words of the action of conjunction and disjunction."

What can be expressed by the word of conjunction and such — that is this very thing, showing its nature. At that time, what use is it to conceive of going and other things that have no purpose? There is not the slightest need — this is the rejection. Within "and such" are conjunction, disjunction, other, non-other, and the like — conceiving of those too has no purpose whatsoever.

Why? As before, one asks for the reason. "Since the relation of these is not established" — since, as dependence on another and such have been negated in every form, the relation of this — whether as action, conjunction, or disjunction — is not established. When there is no relation, how could the speech expressing the reason of relation — "this is this one's" — arise?

Just as the action and such that are understood to belong to another are not related to that other, because there is no relation — so too with what is intended as one's own. Just as the action and such understood to belong to Devadatta are, because there is no relation, not related to Yajnadatta — similarly, the action and such understood to belong to oneself, being equally without relation — those too are likewise not related.

Since action and such are not related, and therefore going and such are not — therefore, things that are individual moments, born moment by moment through other and other conditions of continually arising basis and foundation — these are the distinct things. Conjunction, disjunction, going, and such are fitting.

When things that abide separately are generated without interruption by conditions that gather — at that time the cognition of conjunction and the word of conjunction are grounded in the reason that things have arisen without interval. Similarly, when things abiding without interval are separated by conditions that produce separation — at that time the cognition of disjunction and the word of disjunction are grounded in the reason that things come to be separated. Similarly, when things that abide in one place move to different locations through conditions of continual motion — at that time the cognition of going and the word of going are grounded in the reason that things arise continuously. And so forth for other cases as appropriate.

"The nature of a single teaching is not the relation of conjunction and such" — for things that are momentary are not the very ground for the cognition of conjunction and such. Neither the momentary nor the non-momentary thing of conjunction and such, grounded in a reason, is the cognition and word of conjunction.

"Therefore, there is no relation whatsoever characterized by conjunction and such that truly exists" — therefore, ultimately, there is no relation characterized by conjunction and such that exists at all. "Therefore, the nature of all things is without relation" — since, when one thus examines, no relation whatsoever exists, therefore all things are of a nature free from relation in their own natures. Ultimately, there is no relation of anything whatsoever — this is the conclusion.

By the extensive explanation of the Examination of Relations,
Whatever great virtue has been obtained —
May all sentient beings attain
The unsurpassed peace, which opposes the bonds of samsara.
