The Jātakastava (Skt. Jātakastava; Tib. skyes pa rabs kyi bstod pa) is a devotional hymn praising the Buddha Śākyamuni through the heroic deeds of his past lives. Each verse invokes a renowned jātaka tale — the bodhisattva who gave his body to a starving tigress, the hare who leapt into fire for a guest, King Śibi who weighed his own flesh against a dove — finding in each sacrifice a sign of the Buddha's unshakeable compassion.
The text preserves Sanskrit verses in Tibetan transliteration alongside the Tibetan translation, a common format in the Tengyur's stotra section. The author is identified in the colophon as Ācārya Jñānayaśas (Tib. slob dpon ye shes grags pa). The Tibetan translation was made by the Zhalu lotsāwa Dharmapālabhadra.
This is the first English translation. The Tibetan source text is drawn from the Degé Tengyur, folios 255b.4–257b.6.
I.
O All-Pervading Lord who holds the ten powers,
Whose unmatched conduct is sovereign mastery —
Though I, a fool, would enter the stream of your births,
Even a particle of praise toward you yields fruit.
Therefore I take up words and names of devotion,
Reaching beyond mind's grasp toward the view of peace.
II.
Your unmatched, supreme qualities
Have become the domain of speech — yet what a portion!
As jewels shine clear upon the ocean's sandy shore,
And the discerning, from amid all common things,
Seize what is deep, luminous, and radiant from within —
So by the Great Vehicle's zeal upon the path of awakening,
By deeds of compassion, your continuous stream
Purifies the world.
III.
The stainless enjoyment of all that can be known —
What more need be said?
The elephant of your awakening's qualities, intoxicated,
Caught by devotion's power,
Could not turn back but entered solely your enlightenment.
Long ago the gods bestowed the dharma-empowerment upon you
And arrayed your purified mind in splendour,
Offering flowers with trembling crown-locks.
IV.
Seeing the tigress about to devour her own cubs,
With single-pointed compassion and the mind to protect,
You bound your matted hair with bark
And cast your body down.
O Protector! To beings circling
In the caverns of existence's mountains,
You took the form of a great white elephant
And gave your flesh to the starving —
Loosening the very stone of the mountain for their sake.
V.
You whose body shone like the moon in the world's sky,
Moon-bodied, radiant with moonlight —
To those whose conduct was stained by miserliness,
You gave the shining crest-jewel of your crown,
Cutting the lotus-stalk with the sword,
Severing root and head without hesitation.
VI.
When you, O Protector, took the body of a hare
Who lived on leaves and water and fruit —
At that moment, overwhelmed by compassion for the guest
And knowing your body was the only gift,
You entered the blazing fire.
And thereafter, needing nothing:
The mark upon the moon's bright disk — the hare itself,
Your very nature — proclaims your renown.
VII.
Terrified by the hawk, the dove's throat seized and blocked —
When you, the peaceful king free from attachment,
Weighed the bird upon the scale against your flesh,
Māra made your body lighter than cotton on the balance.
Yet the splendour of your sacrifice remained.
VIII.
Even beneath the earth, the nāgas
With loosened hoods and fearsome fangs
Were stirred by waves that shook the ocean-lord.
Great serpent-kings who struck the waters in fury —
By compassion's great body, O Blessed One,
You established a shore where there was none.
By that supreme deed,
All worlds became a threefold jewel.
IX.
The wish-fulfilling gem upon the jewel-studded islands,
From the belly of the deep — you obtained the full fruit.
From you arose, through the wise,
The precious sprouts of holy dharma.
Dark-blue bodied, radiant guardian —
With swords they cut your body and pierced it through,
And blood flowed from every root.
X.
Both eyes, unwounded, you plucked out
And gave to the sightless brahmin.
Sole lamp of beings wandering
In the darkness of blindness, O Exalted One —
Thus bound by devotion, the sage's speech-ornament reveals:
Even a portion of your deeds conquers all renown.
XI.
By the vast, expanding accumulations —
Portion by portion, dense with devotion —
Thereby delighting supremely in the welfare of others,
Caring with devotion for one's own and others' purpose:
May the Omniscient One, skilled in benefiting all,
Lead every being into the One Vehicle.

Translator's note: This is a highly ornate kāvya-style poem. The Tibetan closely follows Sanskrit compound structures, and the interleaving of Sanskrit transliteration and Tibetan translation makes verse boundaries ambiguous in places. Some renderings of the more elaborate passages are interpretive. The jātaka references — the tigress (Vyāghrī), the hare (Śaśa), King Śibi, the nāga crossing, and the eye-giving — are clearly identifiable in the Tibetan.
This is a first-ever English translation. No prior English translation is known to exist.
Companion text: Jataka Praise (Jātakastotra, D1179) by Dharmasūrya — the immediately following text in the Tengyur's stotra section. Where Jñānayaśas' eleven verses paint individual jātaka tales in ornate kāvya detail, Dharmasūrya's four verses praise the accumulated qualities of the Buddha's past lives as a whole.
