Bodhibhadra (བྱང་ཆུབ་བཟང་པོ) — Bodhisattvasaṃvaravidhi
A ceremonial liturgy for receiving the bodhisattva’s threefold moral discipline: the morality of restraint, the morality of gathering wholesome qualities, and the morality of acting for the benefit of beings. Composed by Bodhibhadra, one of the last great masters of Vikramaśīla monastery and teacher of Atiśa Dīpaṃkara. Translated into Tibetan by Sunāyaśrīmitra and the monk Dharmagrags. First English translation.
Homage to all Buddhas and bodhisattvas.
These are described as the aggregates of moral discipline for bodhisattvas: the morality of restraint, the morality of gathering wholesome qualities, and the morality of acting for the benefit of beings.
Approaching the Master
A householder or renunciant who wishes to train in these, having made the aspiration for unsurpassed, truly complete awakening, should approach a bodhisattva who possesses corresponding qualities — one who is skilled and capable, who serves the meaning through verbal instruction, and who is able to understand — and, having prostrated, make the following request:
The Request
“I — whether child of noble family, or Venerable, or Reverend — wish from nearby to properly receive the bodhisattva’s moral discipline vow. If it is fitting and not difficult to grant, please, out of compassion, grant it to me.”
Repeat three times.
Preparation
Having thus made the request three times, drape the upper robe over one shoulder. Bow to the Buddhas, Blessed Ones, of the past, present, and future throughout the world-realms of the ten directions, and to the bodhisattvas who dwell on the great stages. Having made their qualities directly manifest and generated great mind, kneel or sit in a squatting posture. Request the Tathāgata’s form to appear before you and make offerings. Having made this manifest, speak these words:
“Child of noble family — or Venerable, or Reverend — named [Name], please grant me the proper receiving of the bodhisattva’s moral discipline vow.”
Then, settling into single-pointed focus, generate a joyful mind, reflecting: “I shall, before long, obtain the inexhaustible, immeasurable, unsurpassed treasury of merit.” Contemplating this meaning, remain in silence.
The Master’s Address
Then the skilled bodhisattva master, sitting or standing without distraction, addresses the candidate:
“You, named [Name]: all the training grounds of the bodhisattva and all the moral disciplines of the bodhisattva — the moral disciplines and training grounds of the bodhisattvas of the past, the moral disciplines that shall become those of the bodhisattvas of the future and their training grounds, and the moral disciplines and training grounds that are those of the bodhisattvas presently existing in the ten directions — the training grounds and moral disciplines in which all the bodhisattvas of the past have trained, in which the bodhisattvas of the future will train, and in which the bodhisattvas of the present are now training — do you accept?”
The candidate replies: “I accept.”
This vow is taken three times.
Invocation of Witnesses
“May the Buddhas, Blessed Ones, and bodhisattvas dwelling in the world-realms of the ten directions attend to me. May the master attend to me.”
Confession
“I, named [Name], whatever negative actions I have committed through body, speech, and mind — in relation to the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, mother, father, and all other sentient beings — in this life and in other existences, whether committed by myself, caused to be committed by others, or rejoiced in — all these, gathered together, combined and collected, I supremely and foremost confess before the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and master. Knowing and remembering, without concealment.”
Three times.
Refuge
“I, named [Name], having thus confessed my negative actions — from this time forth, until I reach the essence of awakening — I take refuge in the Buddha, Blessed One, of great compassion, omniscient, all-seeing, who has transcended all fear of enemies, the great being of indivisible form, of unsurpassed form, of the Dharma body, supreme among two-legged beings.”
“I, named [Name], having thus confessed my negative actions — from this time forth, until I reach the essence of awakening — I take refuge in the supreme Dharma: peace, free from desire.”
“I, named [Name], having thus confessed my negative actions — from this time forth, until I reach the essence of awakening — I take refuge in the supreme community of the irreversible bodhisattva Saṅgha.”
Three times.
Generation of the Mind of Awakening
“I, named [Name], having thus confessed my negative actions and taken refuge in the Three — for the sake of liberating the boundless realm of sentient beings, for their deliverance, for completely rescuing them from the suffering of cyclic existence, and for establishing them in unsurpassed omniscient wisdom:
“Just as the bodhisattvas of the past, future, and present have generated the mind of awakening — possessing the realization of Buddhahood, having realized it, and who will realize it — and just as all the Buddhas, free from obscuration, with Buddha-wisdom and Buddha-eye know and see, and just as they know the nature of all phenomena — by this rite, I, named [Name], with the master and others, generate the mind of unsurpassed, truly complete awakening before the Buddhas and bodhisattvas.”
Three times.
Dedication
“The roots of virtue arising from this confession of negative actions, this taking refuge in the Three, and this generation of the mind of awakening — I dedicate completely to unsurpassed, truly complete awakening.”
The Great Aspiration
“For the world that has no refuge, no protector, no shelter, no ally, and no island — may I become their refuge, protector, shelter, ally, and island.
“May all sentient beings who have not been liberated from the ocean of cyclic existence be liberated. May those who have not fully passed beyond obscurations pass into the nirvāṇa of the dharmadhātu. May those who have not found relief find relief.”
Three times.
The Commitment
“I, named [Name], having thus generated the mind of awakening — in the boundless realm of sentient beings, I shall individually hold them all as mother, father, sister, sibling, son, daughter, and as kin and relatives.
“Having held them, with whatever capacity, whatever strength, and whatever support I possess, I shall properly generate roots of virtue.”
The Six Perfections
“From this time forth:
“I shall practice generosity.
I shall guard moral discipline.
I shall cultivate patience.
I shall exert effort.
I shall enter meditative concentration.
I shall rely on wisdom.
I shall train in all roots of virtue.”
Following the Path
“All these for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of all sentient beings, and beginning from unsurpassed, truly complete awakening — I shall follow the entry of the Great Vehicle of the great bodhisattvas who dwell on the great stages, those of great compassion.
“As a trainee bodhisattva from this time, may my master hold me as a bodhisattva.”
Three times.
The Master’s Confirmation
The master then bows to the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions who are dwelling, living, and abiding, and to those who have passed, and declares:
“The bodhisattva named [Name], from me, the bodhisattva named [Name], and those nearby — for the third time — has properly received the bodhisattva’s moral discipline vow. I, the bodhisattva named [Name], truly know myself to be the witness of the bodhisattva named [Name].
“To those in the boundless world-realms of the ten directions who, though sublime and hidden, are not hidden from the welfare of sentient beings — may they know that this one has properly received the bodhisattva’s moral discipline vow.”
Three times.
Signs in the Ten Directions
After the action of properly receiving the moral discipline vow, this is truly the nature of things: reaching throughout the boundless world-realms of the ten directions, among the Tathāgatas who dwell and abide and those who have passed, and among the bodhisattvas who dwell on the great stages — signs of this nature arise. By which they know: “The bodhisattva named [Name], from the bodhisattva named [Name], has properly received the bodhisattva’s moral discipline vow.”
The Self-Administered Rite
Now another rite of receiving is described. If a qualified person is not available nearby, the bodhisattva should receive the bodhisattva’s moral discipline vow by himself before an image of the Tathāgata.
This should be done as follows: draping the upper robe over one shoulder, bow to the Buddhas, Blessed Ones, of the past, present, and future in the world-realms of the ten directions, and to the bodhisattvas who dwell on the great stages. Planting the right knee on the ground, or squatting, speak these words:
“I, named [Name], appeal to all the Tathāgatas and bodhisattvas dwelling on the great stages in the world-realms of the ten directions. Before them, I receive all the trainings of the bodhisattva and all the moral discipline vows of the bodhisattva — the moral disciplines as described above — and so forth as before.
“As a trainee bodhisattva from this time forth, may the Buddhas and bodhisattvas hold me as a bodhisattva.”
This is the action.
