The Temple Hymns

The Temple Hymns (ETCSL c.4.80.1) are a cycle of forty-two short poems addressed to the great temples of Sumer. Each hymn praises a temple, celebrates its divine powers, and names the deity who dwells there. The cycle ends with Enheduanna naming herself as compiler — making this one of the oldest signed literary compositions in history.

Enheduanna was the high priestess of the Moon God Nanna at Ur, daughter of Sargon of Akkad, circa 2300 BCE. She is the first author in human history whose name we know. The Temple Hymns are a sacred geography of Sumer — a pilgrimage in verse from Eridu in the south to the cities of the north, temple by temple, god by god.

This is a Good Works Translation from the Sumerian transliteration provided by the Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature (ETCSL, Oxford). The composite text (c.4.80.1) was the source. The ETCSL English translation was consulted as reference for difficult passages; this rendering is independently derived from the Sumerian in the gospel register of the Good Work Library.

I. The House of Enki in Eridu

O E-unir, grown together with heaven and earth,
foundation of heaven and earth, great hall of Eridu!
Abzu, shrine erected for its prince,
E-du-kug, holy mound where pure food is eaten,
watered by the prince's pure canal,
mountain, pure place cleansed with potash —
Abzu, your drums belong to the divine powers.

Your great wall stands in good repair.
In your meeting-place where the god dwells,
light does not enter — the great work, the good place,
where day does not pass.
Your tightly built house is sacred and has no equal.

Your prince, the great prince, has set a holy crown upon you.
In your precinct, O Eridu with a crown on your head,
bringing forth thornbushes, pure thornbushes for the lustration priests,
O shrine Abzu, your place, your great place!

At the place where you call upon Utu,
at your oven raising bread, at your table heaped with food,
your ziggurat, a magnificent shrine reaching toward heaven,
your great oven rivalling the great hall —
your prince, the prince of heaven and earth, who can never be changed,
the creator, the wise one,
Lord Nudimmud,
has erected a house in your precinct, O E-engura,
and taken his seat upon your dais.

II. The House of Enlil in Nippur

O shrine where destiny is determined,
foundation and ziggurat raised high,
settlement of Enlil —
your right and your left are Sumer and Akkad.

House of Enlil, your interior is cool,
your exterior determines destiny.
Your doorjambs and architrave are a mountain summit,
your projecting pilasters a dignified mountain.
Your peak is the princely platform.
Your base serves heaven and earth.

Your prince, the great prince Enlil, the good lord,
the lord of the limits of heaven, the lord who determines destiny,
the Great Mountain Enlil,
has erected a house in your precinct, O shrine Nippur,
and taken his seat upon your dais.

III. The House of Ninlil in Nippur

O Tummal, exceedingly worthy of the princely divine powers,
inspiring awe and dread!
Foundation, your pure lustration extends over the Abzu.
Primeval city, reedbed green with old reeds and new shoots,
your interior is a mountain of abundance built in plenitude.
At your feast held in the month of the New Year,
you are wondrously adorned,
as the great lady of Ki-ur rivals Enlil.

Your princess, Mother Ninlil, beloved wife of Nunamnir,
has erected a house in your precinct, O E-Tummal,
and taken her seat upon your dais.

IV. The House of Nuska in Nippur

O E-melem-hush, exuding great awesomeness,
Esh-mah, magnificent shrine to which princely divine powers
were sent down from heaven,
storehouse of Enlil founded for the primeval divine powers,
worthy of nobility, lifting your head in princeship,
counsellor of E-kur,
parapeted buttress whose house reaches the platform of heaven!

At the place of the great judgment — the river of the ordeal —
the just are made to live,
and the hearts that are evil are consigned to darkness.
In your great place fit for pure lustration
and the rites of the ishib priests,
you dine with Lord Nunamnir.

Your prince, the prince who counsels Enlil and is worthy of Esh-mah,
the guardian spirit of E-kur, the leader Nuska,
has erected a house in your precinct, O house of Enlil,
and taken his seat upon your dais.

V. The House of Ninurta in Nippur

O E-me-ur-ana, standing in a great place!
The just divine powers of the warrior,
strength of battle, heroic mace, carrier of the quiver —
mighty bustling brickwork, your foundation is eternal.
Founded by the primeval lord,
with decisions belonging to the princely divine powers,
holy soil filling the mountain, lifting your head among the princes —
magnificent house, the wonder coming from you
spreads like the sun.
E-shu-me-sha, Enlil has instilled your name with terrible awe.

Your prince, the great warrior whose strength is boundless,
the great ruler for Enlil, the noble who rivals heaven and earth,
the seal-keeper of Father Enlil
who makes the great divine powers perfect,
the leader for Father Enlil,
the foremost, the lion engendered by the Great Mountain,
who destroys the hostile lands for Enlil —
Lord Ninurta,
has erected a house in your precinct, O E-shu-me-sha,

VI. The House of Shuzianna in Ga-gi-mah

O E-ga-duda, lifting its head from the chamber,
crown of the high plain, holy place, pure place —
house, your foundation is a great princely mooring pole.

Du-sag-dili, your lady, the singular woman
who keeps the chamber and the dais full,
gladdens your platform in princely style.

Your princess, who avoids anger and is exceedingly wise,
the princely daughter who prospers with the Great Mountain,
Shuzianna, the junior wife of Father Enlil,
has erected a house in your precinct, O Du-sag-dili,
and taken her seat upon your dais.

VII. The House of Ninhursag in Kesh

O mighty Kesh, form of heaven and earth,
arousing terror like a great horned viper,
house of Ninhursag, built in a terrifying place!

Respected Kesh, your interior is deep
while your exterior is tall.
Great lion on the high plain, roving upon the plain,
great hill established by incantations,
twilit interior where moonlight does not shine —
Nintur has made you beautiful.
O house Kesh, your brickwork and your moulding!
Your terrace! Your exterior, a lustrous crown!

Your princess, the silencing princess,
the true and great lady of heaven —
when she speaks, heaven trembles;
when she opens her mouth, a storm thunders —
Aruru, the sister of Enlil,
has erected a house in your precinct, O house Kesh,
and taken her seat upon your dais.

VIII. The House of Nanna in Ur

O Ur, bull standing in the wet reeds,
E-kish-nu-gal, calf of a great cow,
light of holy heaven,
trap laid in a nest —
Ur, container feeding all lands,
shrine in a pure place, earth of An!

O house of Suen, at your front a prince, at your back a ruler,
your dining hall rings with adab songs,
your great holy banqueting hall with shem and ala drums —
the light coming from you and your true lordship
is a precious destiny.

Gipar, princely shrine of the holy divine powers,
shining like the sun,
E-kish-nu-gal, beaming moonlight which comes forth in the land,
broad light of midday filling all lands —
house, your platform is a great serpent, a marsh of serpents.
Your foundation is the Abzu, fifty in number,
and the Engur, seven in number,
a shrine which looks into the heart of the gods.

Your prince, the prince who makes decisions,
the crown of the wide heaven, the sovereign of heaven,
Ashimbabbar,
has erected a house in your precinct, O shrine Ur,
and taken his seat upon your dais.

IX. The House of Shulgi in Ur

House, your prince Shulgi has made it great and most princely.
The perfect and magnificent one, the mighty and great wind,
adorned with the divine powers, determining destiny,
Shulgi of An,
has erected a house in your precinct, O E-hursag,
and taken his seat upon your dais.

X. The House of Asarluhi in Kuara

O city, rising from the Abzu like barley,
cloudy plain taking the divine powers from its midst —
Kuara, your foundation and just banqueting hall!
The lord who does not hold back his goods stands ready for admiration.
The Seven Sages have enlarged it for you
from the south to the uplands.

E-imah, house of stars,
your walls, house, are set far apart.
Your prince, the tall prince born in his city,
the lordly one of Eridu, Asarluhi,
has erected a house in your precinct, O house Kuara,
and taken his seat upon your dais.

XI. The House of Ningublaga in Ki-abrig

O Ki-abrig, place of assembly
where the great gods gather!
Shrine, uniting right and left,
built where the Tigris and the Euphrates
separate and go their ways —

Your prince, the mighty lord who rides upon the great storms,
the strength of Enlil and Suen,
Ningublaga,
has erected a house in your precinct, O house Ki-abrig,
and taken his seat upon your dais.

XII. The House of Nanna in Gaesh

O Gaesh, great crown of the cattle-pen of Suen,
banqueting hall where the food is never exhausted!

O Gishbanda, angry storm of heaven,
splendour going forth upon the earth,

Your prince, the strong lord who seizes the rebel,
Ningishzida,

O unparalleled Uruk, great wall touching the sky,
great dwelling founded by An,

burning at night, put out at dawn,
your seven divine powers, perfected by the greatest gods —

He rides the great storms, he harnesses the winds,
the lightning is his herald, the thunder his drum.
The rain of heaven, the flood of the mountains,
the lord who makes the barley grow,
who sets the vineyard in order —
Ishkur, lord of abundance, whose word is a storm,

who cures the sick, who tends the wounded,
Ninisinna, the daughter of An,

O Kazallu, storehouse of the mountains,
house built on the high plain!

O E-sikil, whose pure divine powers are supreme in all lands,

your lustration is a cleansing lustration.
The warrior refreshes himself in your dwelling.
Ninazu dines on your platform.

Your sovereign, the great lord, the son of Enlil,
a towering lion spitting venom over hostile lands,
rising like the south wind against the enemy,
snarling like a dragon against the walls of rebel lands,
a storm enveloping the disobedient
and trampling on the enemy.

When he strides forth, no evildoer can escape.
When he establishes his triumph, the cities are destroyed.
When he frowns, their people are cast into the dust.
House, your prince is a great lion
from whose claws the enemy hangs.
Your sovereign is a terrifying storm, the vigour of battle.
The true seed born of the Great Mountain and Ninlil,
your sovereign, the warrior Ninazu,
has erected a house in your precinct,

O house built in plenitude, Kish, raising its head

Your right hand makes mountains tremble,
your left thins out the enemy.

Your prince, mighty and magnificent,

the warrior Zababa,

XXXVI. The House of Nergal in Gudua

O E-gishkeshda-kalama, bull of great strength among the gods,
terrifying wild cow, wild bull which causes lament —

your platform spreads its lustre over Meslam.

Your prince, the mighty god, the sovereign of Meslam,
the fierce god of the underworld, the sovereign of sunset,
Nergal, Meslamtaea,
has erected a house in your precinct,

XXXVII. The House of Suen in Urum

O mighty Urum, where Suen pronounces judgment,
E-ab-lua, wide cattle-yard —
Ashimbabbar acts as your shepherd.

who appears in the lapis-lazuli sky,
to whom the hero pays homage,
who brightens the land —

The bull shines forth and the people bow down.
The black-headed have bathed before him,
the land has been cleansed before him.
He measures out the divine powers — your shrine is a flood.

Pronouncing judgment where the sun rises,
mighty sunlight, wearing a beard,
tying on the crown at night —
Utu, the sovereign of E-babbar,
has erected a house in your precinct, O house Sippar,
and taken his seat upon your dais.

XXXIX. The House of Ninhursag

O E-hursag, beautiful as greenery,
your interior is plenitude.
At the place where destiny is determined
you determine destiny.
May the crown bring joy to your platform.
May your roots glisten like a serpent in your holy foundations.

Mother Nintur, the lady of creation,
performs her task within your dark place,
binding the true crown on the newborn king,
setting the crown on the newborn lord
who is secure in her hand.
The midwife of heaven and earth, Ninhursag,
has erected a house in your precinct
and taken her seat upon your dais.

XL. The House of Inanna in Ulmash

O Ulmash, upper land, terrifying lion
battering a wild bull,
net spreading over the enemy,
making silence fall upon the rebel land!
House of Inanna of silver and lapis lazuli,
a storehouse built of gold —
your princess is a bird of prey,
the Mistress of the Nigin-gar.

Arrayed in battle, jubilantly beautiful,
ready with the seven maces,
washing her tools for battle, opening the door of battle —
the supremely wise one of heaven, Inanna,
has erected a house in your precinct, O house Ulmash,
and taken her seat upon your dais.

XLI. The House of Aba in Agade

O house, right arm, battle-axe
cutting down the rebel lands,
digging up their green fields —
your prince, the warrior who defeats all in battle,
Aba, the god of Agade,
has erected a house in your precinct, O house Agade,

XLII. The House of Nisaba in Erech

O house of stars, bright E-zagin, reaching into all lands,
establishing the shrine in Erech!
The primeval lords raise their heads to you every month.
Great Nanibgal, Nisaba, has brought divine powers from heaven
and added to your divine powers.

Sanctuary established in wonder!
To the true woman who possesses exceeding wisdom,
soothing and opening the mouth,
always consulting a tablet of lapis lazuli,
giving counsel to all lands —
the true woman, the holy potash plant,
born of the stylus reed,
applies the measure to heaven
and places the measuring rope on the earth.
To Nisaba be praise!

The compiler of the tablets was Enheduanna.
