Sixteen spirit-writing sessions spanning the most turbulent years of Yiguandao's history — from 1944 through March 1949, on the eve of the communist takeover of mainland China. The celestial hierarchy descends with increasing urgency: the Zhangpan Patriarch (掌盤祖師, holder of the altar), Basou (八叟, Dean of the Celestial Academy), Ji Gong (as Master Fengdai 師瘋呆, "the Crazy Fool"), Teacher Mother Sun Huiming (師母), Yuehui Bodhisattva (月慧菩薩), Tianran Ancient Buddha (天然古佛, Zhang Tianran posthumous), the Three-Heaven Examiner (三天主考), Zhang the Dharma Lord (張法律主), and Ji Gong under his Southern Screen title (南屏道濟).
The first four sessions (1944–1948) are prophetic warnings of the coming storm. The final twelve sessions are a concentrated burst in March 1949 — the celestial hierarchy speaking nearly every day as the political ground collapses beneath the faithful. These are voices from heaven addressed to a community about to be scattered, persecuted, and driven across the Taiwan Strait.

Session One
The Twentieth Day of the Sixth Month, Year Jiashen (1944)
Descended Teaching of the Zhangpan Patriarch
The true Dao is hard to manage.
The true Dao is hard to cultivate.
A thousand demons, ten thousand tests —
layer upon layer of crucible furnaces.
Heaven devises extraordinary trials
to select the worthy from the midst.
Alas, how difficult!
Who can see through the true mechanism?
Most cultivate blindly.
Basou (八叟), Dean of the Celestial Academy, descends:
I, Dean Basou, by imperial decree, accompanying the Patriarch, descend to the Buddha Hall.
First I pay my respects to Heaven. Respectfully I greet the Old Patriarch — brothers, are you well? I clasp my hands and ask you: have you seen through Heaven's will?
The Old One's many arrangements, all for the great matter to come — how much planning has been poured out! How much bitter sorrow endured! Brothers — how many of you can share the Old One's burden?
Alas —
In the Jiashen year, the examination opens by destiny's design.
Heaven tests and humans verify — it comes at the appointed hour.
Yin carves and yang polishes, manifesting in every form.
Open tests, hidden selections, refining extraordinary talent.
Since ancient times, when the Dao flourishes, demons multiply their harm.
When virtue is cultivated, slander arises — but principle does not bend.
If you can see through the logic of demonic testing,
it is not hard to return to the root and reach Penglai.
Master Fengdai (師瘋呆), the Crazy Fool — Ji Gong — descends:
I, your Master Fengdai, by imperial decree, accompanying the Patriarch, have come to the world of dust. The Master will not say much — I respectfully await the Patriarch's arrangement.
Alas —
Who can recognize the true mechanism of the Great Gathering?
The good hour for cultivating the Dao will not last long.
Heroes who know the times advance toward their duty —
ride the wind, break the waves, do not delay!
Know that the sun and moon are always passing.
The years will not wait — disciples, understand this.
While this window of grace is not yet closed,
rouse your spirit and set forth with fearless resolve!
Teacher Mother Sun Huiming (師母) descends:
I, your Teacher Mother, by imperial decree, have arrived with the Patriarch. I bow to God on High. I will not say much.
Last year, two lunar eclipses. This year, two solar eclipses as well — three rings appearing intertwined. Who can see through the mechanism? Before events come to pass, Heaven must first show signs. Within them, infinite wondrous principle. Follow the signs, awaken to principle, investigate carefully — when principle is pure, suddenly all becomes clear.
The Zhangpan Patriarch (掌盤祖師) descends — the main teaching:
I am the True Person destined by Heaven, the one who holds the altar in this age. By imperial decree, with my disciples, I come to the Dharma altar. First I pay my respects to God on High. I take up the planchette and inscribe my words.
The years show no mercy.
The earth turns on.
Jiashen wood, Dinghuo fire —
the metal of Shen forged and fused.
The great refining is unleashed.
Tests upon tests, heavy as mountains.
Generals besieged.
At the cliff's edge they tremble.
Chains of traps
follow one upon another.
Those who do not understand Heaven's will —
the thread is cut and cannot be restored.
The moon grows dark.
Strange doctrines spring up.
The sun nears its setting —
a new moon shines.
Under all heaven, light spreads.
The altar is set in the Western Capital.
Hidden providence descends.
In a turning instant, the work is done.
How many do not understand!
People parrot what they hear.
The discerning mind takes command
while the true spirit is clouded over.
Lost lambs
without their shepherd.
No certainty, great or small.
No path to follow.
In broad daylight,
under clear and open skies —
what is hard to meet, hard to encounter:
seek it, and walk.
Greed, anger, ignorance, craving —
deluded thoughts spring up.
Self-proclaimed scholars
appear without end.
Wrong! Wrong!
Treating it as mere human relations.
By the time you repent, it is too late —
on a bed of needles.
You and I, this one and that,
grasping for profit, fighting for fame.
I am weak, you are strong,
seizing fruit, stealing credit.
Mocking and sneering —
slander never stops.
Pushing and shoving —
encroaching visibly.
Heaven's net does not frighten them.
They cannot tell desire from principle.
They do not fear Heaven's mandate.
They care only about human favor.
Self-righteous.
Haughty and reckless.
Selfish to the core.
High and low confused.
Evil heaps up like mountains.
Sin swells like the sea.
Already the chief offenders —
at the extreme, disaster must follow.
The framework of the Dharma is destroyed.
Not an inch of virtue gained.
Heavenly principle is lost.
The body struck by thunder.
Inwardly, no self-examination.
The spirit-nature thrown into chaos.
Like silkworms binding themselves in silk —
this from that, indistinguishable.
Outwardly, the five demons
entangle and contend.
Pay close attention —
understand their forms.
Tiger-headed, snake-tailed,
they march into the prison camp.
Wolf-hearted, dog-lunged,
they come to devour people.
Chaos reaches its peak.
Such calamity!
They rise up in swarms
and fight in packs.
They move as one.
Sound, light, and electricity attack.
When the order goes out, mountains shake —
high and low alike are shaken.
Seized, bound, escorted,
taken for interrogation.
Good men and faithful women —
every one of them abused.
Frenzied and reckless.
Wind howls, thunder roars.
Violence, terror —
rain hammers the skull.
Heads broken, faces bloodied.
Hearts quaking, spirits trembling.
Direction lost.
Souls scattered, spirits shattered.
Pay attention to year's end.
Watch autumn and winter.
Prepare first.
Lead the younger generation.
The remaining affairs —
complete them when you have time.
Cut away the excess.
Distinguish the heavy from the light.
The furnace fire blazes.
The crucible shows no mercy.
The preparations are complete.
Everything is clear and in order.
Refine away the false.
Reveal the true face.
When all original souls are gathered,
everyone returns to the root.
Remember! Remember!
Do not display your cleverness.
Distance yourself from treacherous flatterers
or you will fall into the pit.
See the worthy — think to match them.
Watch the crossroads with clear eyes.
Recommend the loyal and good.
Keep your household clean and bright.
Everyone, awaken!
From chaos, order is born.
Every evil spell,
every formation — all are empty.
Enter the inner hall.
The decree of merit descends.
How joyful! How content!
Distinguish the clear from the murky.
The dead are enfeoffed.
The living find happiness.
Hear and read Heaven's decree —
every command, obey.
If the way opens, press forward.
Lose this chance, and it may never come again.
The season of grace is limited.
Procrastination will accomplish nothing.
Study these words from time to time.
Let the past serve as your guide.
The Way that leads beyond has no second path.
Transcend death and enter life.
Do not slacken. Do not be lazy.
Take responsibility and advance.
These good words I leave inscribed
at this altar of Chen.
Having inscribed the Thirty-Six True Words, my grandchildren may examine them carefully. Within them are infinite wondrous meanings. Only those who see through them are truly extraordinary.
Do not say the Patriarch's words have no order. From today onward, examine and observe. Each step more urgent than the last. Each day more urgent than the last. Grandchildren — have you made your decision? Then speak with your Patriarch, if you will.
The assembly responds: "We vow to guard the good Dao unto death. Steadfast from beginning to end. Recognizing principle, cultivating with sincerity. Demonic tests will not make us retreat. We beg the Old Patriarch's compassion!"
All the signs from Heaven above — borrow the signs to awaken to principle, and understanding will be complete. Humans have good opportunities, heaven-granted. If you can extend your knowledge, you can reach Heaven. What you do not understand is all entanglement with material desires. If you can purify your heart and reduce your desires, at no moment will you not be connected to Heaven.
Today's teaching contains all matters within it.
Awaken! Awaken! Awaken! See through it and delay no more.
I will not inscribe further. Taking my leave of you, grandchildren, I return.
Haha! I withdraw.
Session Two
The Eleventh Day of the Seventh Month, Year Yiyou (1945)
Oral Instruction of Basou (八叟)
The old swallow returns to the nest — affairs multiply.
Red fire burns half the rivers and mountains.
Peaceful fields, suddenly desolate.
Men and women in soldier's garb flee up the hillsides.
Every household's Buddha hall — its lamp-fire extinguished.
Everyone who keeps the fast, tears falling like shuttle-threads.
The small and fragile Dharma boat, shattered by the gale,
swept into surging tides and whirlpools.
What I fear most is that you have drunk the wine of forgetting —
hearts unanchored, mouths running wild.
I pull you, you pull me,
pulling back and forth like geese in a pen.
The great vows you memorized so well —
when the time comes, who will honor them?
I do not fear the strong bow or the hard crossbow.
I fear only that you will become your own demon.
One household toppled, another extinguished,
cast into the dark mountains — never to live again.
Guard your thoughts! Guard your thoughts firmly!
One misstep, and you plunge into ten-thousand-fathom waves.
Know this: within the demon, there is also Buddha.
And within the Buddha, there is also demon.
Grace is enmity. Truth is falsehood.
Love is grudge. Good is evil.
Adversity is fortune. Fortune is error.
Light is darkness. Division is unity.
The clever ones, when the hour strikes, will stamp their feet in anguish.
The fools, when the hour strikes, will laugh and laugh.
The extraordinary theater has been staged.
The drums and gongs have already sounded.
Even the jackals sing the maiden's part.
Even the tigers clasp their palms and chant Amitabha.
Fawning airs intoxicate.
Peel off the masks — it is terrible.
The cool wind rises. The command goes out.
Good or bad — all are harvested together.
Now the white goose emerges from green water.
Soon its red feet will play in blue waves.
The Central Plains become a partitioned land —
your faction, my faction.
Set aside the worldly affairs. Leave them.
Watch how the inner question resolves.
The phoenix sorrows, dwelling in the dark land of Yan,
every moment remembering the compassionate Mother.
Hide your vessel. Wait for the time. Patience is the art.
On Mount Qi, the phoenix sings of the Great Harmony.
A thousand hardships come. Ten thousand hardships come.
Even through hardship, you must carry on.
All of it for the future's sake —
and so this great and wondrous strategy was set.
Once the gourd's secret plan is revealed,
then you will know the Great Gathering has its pattern.
The pillars and extraordinary talents have been chosen —
they await our Father's painstaking refinement.
Hard and soft sustain each other. Water and fire are controlled.
Civil and martial fires cross and harmonize.
For now, bear the pain and hold back your tears.
In the days to come, the good ones will laugh and laugh.
The Dean has poured out every word in his heart. Brothers and sisters, ponder them carefully. If anyone can see through the mystery within the mystery, rush to perform your merit and stop dithering! Your practice must know the demands of the hour — early, and the Buddha comes; late, and the demon comes. From this day on, sacred and profane have no separate roads.
Brothers! Sisters! Each of you — beware of Elder Brother Eight!
Haha!
Brother Eight leaves his words at the altar court.
I hope that kindred spirits will not follow blindly.
The crossroads of life and death has now arrived.
Civil and martial fires cross and attack.
Today's affairs are of turning the altar, changing the signs.
After study and deliberation, I warn my brothers and sisters:
pour your heart into understanding, pour your heart into awakening,
to embody our Mother's bitter heart.
In the blink of an eye, the situation changes.
I fear that wanting to cultivate will no longer be possible.
Let those with aspiration manifest their great vows.
From the West, water comes — prop up the Dharma boat.
Together, help our Mother bear the great responsibility.
Embody our Father's bitter heart.
The turning of the times has a number already set.
The alternation of yin and yang is beyond human power.
Heaven's mandate was never anyone's private possession.
The formless transforms — being and non-being arise.
The stage of universal salvation has now passed.
We enter the path of gathering and fruition.
Water and fire in harmony open the era of culture,
cultivating the core of the next generation.
All of this, all of this — not human power.
How could human power accomplish such things?
Brothers and sisters, tell the crooked path from the straight.
Pack your bags early, and set out early on the road.
Session Three
The Fifteenth Day of the Eighth Month, Year Dinghai (1947) — Mid-Autumn Festival
Teacher Mother Sun Huiming Humbly Requests Guidance
Lord Guan (關雲長), leading the law officers, descends:
Righteousness pierces the clouds — aspiration soars to heaven.
Advancing and retreating without compromise: outstanding and worthy.
Red-faced, loyal-hearted, embracing the Spring and Autumn.
Holding the candle until dawn, these twelve years.
I, Guan Yunchang, leading the law officers, by imperial decree, have come to the Buddha Hall. I enter the chamber and pay my respects to the Imperial Carriage. May Yuehui be at peace. Has the Master recovered? My concern hangs heavy with grief.
Alas, alas. I stop here.
The Ten Great Physicians (十大明醫) descend:
The Eighteenth Patriarch, Master Bow-and-Long, destined to his age —
the great Dao vast and boundless, proclaimed throughout the world.
One pointing from the Bright Master, ten thousand ties resolved.
Healing away the old habits, making a new life.
We, the Ten Great Physicians, by gracious decree, have come especially to the altar. Having paid our respects — may the Master take care of himself. We are concerned about the difficult matter. We come today regarding the illness: the Master will be without obstruction. Teacher Mother, set your heart at rest.
Alas, alas. We stop here.
The hosts of heaven — ten thousand immortals, bodhisattvas, and celestial saints — descend:
All desires released, ten thousand thoughts all empty.
Heavenly nature perfectly bright, the immortal spirit restored.
Divine mystery beyond measure — bodhi as companion.
Sages and worthies as steps upon the bodhisattva's path.
We, the hosts of heaven — ten thousand immortals and bodhisattvas — by gracious decree, attending the Holy Carriage, have come to the Buddha's raft. We bow to Heaven. May Yuehui be well. Let the assembly stand in reverence. We will not linger.
Haha! We stop here.
Young Maotian (茂田小兒), leading the three classes, descends:
Rowdy and boisterous! Chattering and laughing, winking and nudging, jumping about as I please!
I, Young Maotian, leading the three classes, attending the Holy Carriage, have come to the Dharma altar. I bow to the August Mother. Is the Golden Parent at peace? My father's illness makes this child's heart ache.
Alas, alas. I stop here.
Master Ji the Crazy (濟癲) — Ji Gong — descends, accompanying Yuehui:
Come to celebrate the festival!
Mid-Autumn is spent so well —
there is eating and there is drinking,
but the Living Buddha alone is left hungry and wanting.
I, your Master Ji the Crazy, accompanying Yuehui, in attendance upon Heaven. May Yuehui be well in body. The season turns cool — please take care. Be cautious, so that I need not worry.
Alas, alas. I stop here.
The Golden Patriarch (金公老祖) descends, attending the Heavenly Carriage:
Golden thread, jade pavilion — long life, extended years.
Public virtue, shared covenant — the days of Shun, the skies of Yao.
The Ancestor arrives at this period to manage the Great Gathering.
The Master's Dharma: unchanging. Rare through all ages.
I, the Golden Patriarch, attending the Heavenly Carriage, have come to the Buddha's chamber. Having paid respects to God on High — may Yuehui be at ease. As Ancestor, I set down the planchette and await the Holy Writing.
Alas, alas. I stop here.
The two Attendant Children (駕前童子) descend before the Carriage:
The Carriage departs the Heaven of Wuji —
front and rear, we attend the Mother's face.
Young and old receive the Heavenly Dao.
Sons and daughters transcend the abyss.
We two, the Attendant Children before the Carriage, attending God on High, have come to the altar steps. We bow to Heaven. We stop the planchette and write no more.
Heehee! We stop here.
Mingming Shangdi — the Imperial Mother of Wuji (明明上帝 無極皇娘) — descends:
The bright virtue lies in renewing the people.
God on High, who made all things — grace runs deep.
Ten thousand spirits, all existence: one principle divided.
The True Governor of all that is — the most honored of all.
I, Mingming Shangdi, the Imperial Mother of Wuji — today, at Mid-Autumn, I lead my guard to the hall. Children, receive the Carriage. May Yuehui be at peace.
But touched by what I see, my tender heart breaks.
Children — rise and listen to my teaching.
Alas —
I look up and sigh: the time has reached its critical pass.
I look down and sigh: the calamity is terribly cruel.
I sigh at this world — a boundless ocean of suffering.
I sigh that my children linger and will not come home.
The three great examinations approach, to select the worthy.
Storm rain, wild wind — ocean waves overturn.
The time of testing has come. The crucible furnace is set.
False winds test the field of the human heart.
Eight feet and seven hands — no thread to follow.
Sand flies, stones hurl, fire fills the sky.
The great earth in utter chaos —
five demons descend and riot across the Central Plains.
Forest of guns, rain of bullets, rising from the four directions.
Eggs stacked, nests overturned — the tree cannot stand.
Whole families separated, unable to gather even ten.
The nation without a master — high and low in ruin.
Eight barbarians press in, nine tribes advance.
The world carved up — the fruit cannot be made whole.
But who knows that Heaven secretly governs?
The wise hold firm in heart and guard the true transmission.
The world is dark — no path lit before you.
Only those with steady resolve can advance alone.
In an instant, heaven and earth become scorched earth —
hold fast to one thread: it reaches Heaven.
In the darkness, infinite wonders work on their own.
The Dao is not far from people — it dwells in the heart.
Recognize the true principle of emptiness and wondrous being.
Each of you: honor your Teacher and follow Heaven.
In the final age, even the stars and constellations seek the Dao.
Those who seek and receive the pointing cross the calamity gate.
Above, even the stars and the Milky Way are saved —
and only then, without regret or shame, transcend the dusty world.
Perform merit and establish virtue: the five directions bear witness.
Those with resolve can become vessels of greatness.
Sweep away three, scatter four — the demon-thieves are destroyed.
Heart clear, spirit pure — free from a thousand entanglements.
Harmonious, but not swept along. Present, but not vulgar.
Well-ordered and composed — never in disarray.
See the dusty world lightly: it all belongs to illusion.
Do not let the false disturb your true heavenly nature.
Be an extraordinary hero — a model among people.
Guard yourself like jade. Understand shame and integrity.
In matters where you differ from the crowd, stand alone.
Whip the fast horse forward — be swift, be ahead.
The present difficulty has already arrived.
At the tail end, walking the Dao grows harder still.
Prepare in your heart. Plan early.
Guard not only against what is, but against what has not yet come.
Destined original children — hear the true Dao.
Look and see: this is the final scene.
No division between us. Advance together in virtue.
Stop debating who comes last and who comes first.
When the stem falls, the melon ripens on its own —
then you will understand what the immortals said.
Through the twelve hours, fulfill your duties with sincerity.
Do not concern yourself with what others do.
Be careful. Keep strict secrecy. Be cautious.
Hide your vessel, wait for the time, dwell in transcendence.
Planning before the rain is still possible —
do not walk blindly toward the crooked and deviant.
The common people: homeless, without a savior.
The era tilts — today is the final pass.
The people grieve and scatter across the wilderness.
This year, chaos — even gods and ghosts shiver.
Joy and sorrow, parting and meeting, change from morning to night.
Ding-fire, Zi and Hai — darkness and misery.
Deep pain: hard to escape the suffering of life and death.
In the year of Hai, all collapses. There is no paradise.
Husband and wife, father and son — none can take the other's place.
Death tonight at the third watch — not a moment's delay.
People of the world exhaust themselves for their children,
tossing and turning, pressed by the cycle of days.
The common saying: when wind and fire scatter, all is finished.
The folk saying: when debts are full, they must be repaid.
But roam freely — anywhere under heaven.
When the Dao is high, why fear flood or fire?
Without grain, free to fly — the wild crane's joy.
The gentleman who knows destiny: his virtue unbroken.
Joy and sorrow — no one can avoid them.
Yang and yin exchange, separated by a single page.
Who knows the great swan's ambition, piercing the clouds?
Devoted to the Dao's purpose — clear and unbending.
Born into the era of the Three Periods,
understand principle, return to the root, aspire to sagehood.
When the heart receives and the spirit understands, suddenly all is clear:
the realm of carefree freedom, without vexation.
The guiltless one examines himself at every hour.
Wandering through the immortal realm, the vision broadens.
When the celestial examinations are fathomed, even the gods stand in awe.
Gods and humans linked together — manifest and complete.
Study with diligence, gain the true delight —
even the small grass and reed are seen by the Bright Emperor.
Fearlessly practice the three kinds of giving, each to the utmost.
Embody Heaven, walk the Dao — let the flower bloom.
From beginning to end, consistent, without slackening.
The fruit still lies within the fresh-blooming flower.
Now left-path sorcery appears.
Those with bright eyes see through it clearly.
Their arts — both active and still — call wind and rain,
scattering beans to make soldiers, summoning hosts to move mountains.
Hordes of demons rise to fight, each showing their might —
boasting boldly, competing for position.
Three thousand six hundred deviant paths:
the Patriarch will gather them all back to the true.
Can any school or teaching stand outside this principle?
Disciples, understand the root. Investigate its source.
Forty-eight thousand — the examination opens.
Good from evil, fool from sage: all are divided.
Guide the people, teach and transform — draw them back with principle.
Self and other: depart from ten thousand ties.
The whole world together understands the wonder.
All people at ease — old and young at peace.
Honoring the past, enriching the future — the day of emergence.
Everyone follows the words of the Doctrine of the Mean.
Good and evil, right and wrong — in the end, all are judged.
The Dao is like warm sun. The calamity: a fading autumn.
I, your Mother, show you this one passage. Within it, many mysteries run through. Who can find the mystery within? That one is truly wise and broadly learned.
Today, at Mid-Autumn, I come to the altar. Meeting my filial daughter, my heart aches. Children all gathered, filling the hall — the sight brings back the past. I recall the events of sixty thousand years ago. To this day it feels as if they are before my eyes.
My compassionate heart cannot find ease. I release my voice of sorrow. From the homeland of No-Birth, I gaze toward the Eastern lands. In the East there are so few who understand — to whom shall I play the song of High Mountain and Flowing Water?
I, your Mother, have always been tender-hearted in my grief. When my child travels a thousand miles, my heart follows in worry. I suffer while my rebellious children play — still within the calamity, chasing joy. But there is Tianran, and there is Yuehui — saving the world, transforming people — and I find some small peace.
When I speak of the Great Gathering, tears of grief fall drop by drop onto the sand tray. My sons, my daughters — for the work of the Dao, how much lifeblood, how many good words have you poured out? A full heart of bitter effort, day and night exhausting the spirit in planning. Enduring every hardship, using every last ounce of strength. All day long, keeping the accounts of the Dao.
Now affairs are in great disorder, burdening my filial son Tianran. Excessive worry has become illness. His body grows weak. I, your Mother, every moment hang with concern. My sons, my daughters exhaust their hearts and strength — how can I find peace?
The Heavenly timing grows urgent by the day. We approach the final critical pass. Heaven and hell are judged right here — and when I speak of it, my heart turns to grief.
Children at the altar — join hands together. With one heart and one virtue, support the Master's shoulders. If my children divide again between this side and that, my heart is pierced as by a knife.
The era has entered its dark phase. Children — are your hearts clear? Heaven tests and humanity verifies, judging at this very hour. One deviant thought and you plunge into the abyss. Each of you must know the times and set your compass. Appreciate your Master's bitter heart.
Children: to save others, first save yourself. Lead by example. If you cannot set yourself right and establish the root, how can you become a person who aspires to sagehood? Each must honor the Teacher and advance in the Dao — sincere without ceasing, devoted in heart. Press your hand to your chest and ask: am I truly without shame? Only then can you be called one who has done their utmost and can accord with Heaven.
I only hope that my children will each awaken. Do not make my heart grieve any more. The Heavenly timing is urgent — what shall we do? Everything must be prepared and arranged. Can the work of the Dao be done carelessly? The slightest negligence and testing comes at once — not only will the Dao be hard to sustain, it will drag my children into suffering.
This is not what my heart desires. But without testing, how can saints and sages be selected? Filial daughter, set your heart at rest. All will be well. Do your utmost and accord with Heaven. I want to lift the testing — but if I do, how can the worthy be selected?
Filial son, weigh carefully what is best. Daughter — why not speak your mind?
Teacher Mother Sun Huiming weeps bitterly, kneeling before the altar, and begs the Imperial Mother's compassion — willing to take the Master's illness upon herself.
Filial daughter, you need not grieve so. Rise and hear your Mother's words. If my filial daughter wants to do as she says, I, your Mother, have words that are hard to speak.
Alas —
My daughter, rise. Do not kneel. My son's illness is of no great concern. It is merely the weather being unsettled, combined with worry and grief taking hold of him. My daughter, rise now — do not grieve so. I, your Mother, have mysterious ways working in secret. Hereafter, all will be well day by day.
All that manifests — is it by human power? All the testing is mysterious upon mysterious. I, your Mother, naturally have my purpose. Human wisdom, however great, cannot prevail over Heaven. My daughter, rise. Do not kneel again. I have my wondrous ways.
Is there anything more you wish to ask? If not, I will withdraw from the altar.
Teacher Mother and the assembly together kneel and beg the Imperial Mother's compassion, that the Master's illness may heal soon.
When the time comes, there will be wonders without limit. Why need I speak of my compassion? If you say the Heavenly Dao is guaranteed to protect — my Dao cannot utter such words.
A sincere heart naturally receives Heaven's protection. To sacrifice one's life for righteousness: this is principle itself. Guan Yu and Yue Fei were illustrious — though they died, their glorious names echo through ten thousand ages. All who sacrifice themselves for the Dao will certainly attain the supreme Nirvana.
I know my filial daughter's heart completely. Who can match her virtue? Filial daughter, set your heart at rest. Do not worry. Be patient and wait for the time.
Children below the altar — understand this meaning. Each of you should show your heart for the Dao. Act on Heaven's behalf and follow the Master's will. With one heart and one virtue, do your part. Never divide into "you" and "me." Let your filial devotion be expressed in utmost sincerity.
No need to divide or worry. Hereafter, all will be well day by day. My son has passed through many fields of testing — by now he should understand this difficult pass. Filial daughter, do not grieve. My compassion and my wonders are without limit.
How could I not grieve too? I grieve because I love all my daughters and my sons.
Alas —
All these words cannot exhaust my instructions. I hope my daughter will set her heart at rest and watch what comes. Children, let your clear hearts show sincere devotion — one heart, undivided, united as one. I show you this and have no other words.
It is the time. It is the fate. It is the number of the final pass.
Teacher Mother again begs: "Venerable Mother — please, have more compassion."
Filial daughter, rise. Do not kneel. In days to come, all will naturally become clear. If my filial daughter kneels before the altar once more, my grief will be such that words will not come.
I show you this, withdraw the planchette, and say no more. In secret, I bestow the spirit pill.
Parting from my children, I release my voice of sorrow. My heart is pierced as by a rain of arrows. The love between mother and child — how deep, how heavy. Parting, I cannot stop the tears from soaking my robe.
Alas, alas, alas. I withdraw.
The Teaching Within the Teaching
Hidden within the Imperial Mother's teaching on that same Mid-Autumn night, this Heavenly Secret Text (天機文) was concealed — a prophecy within a prophecy:
Approaching seven times seven — forty-nine.
Heaven dark, earth dark — not a star in the sky.
Five demons mix with the world. Strange things appear.
The Central Plains carved up — each side plants its flag.
The common people grieve. Fathers and sons are scattered.
Mourning geese across the wilderness — hearts in anguish.
Science fails. Sorcery rises.
A thousand gates, ten thousand teachings — all emerge at once.
The storm wind shakes the fruit from the tree.
Those who hold firm to the Dao will suffer humiliation.
The great cosmos tangled like a horse's tail —
watch where you go.
This year Dinghai, thirty-six fulfilled.
Fire-virtue hands over the decree — the realm of principle wanders.
Vairocana's flower opens: watch for the fruit.
Master and disciple part — on the Mid-Autumn.
Session Four
The Tenth Day of the Second Month, Year Wuzi (1948)
Compassionate Teaching of Yuehui Bodhisattva
Adapting to the times, applying the proper measure.
Proclaiming the Dao, promoting truth, selecting the worthy and capable.
Managing affairs on Heaven's behalf, setting right the final gathering.
Following the model of the ancient sages, walking the true Dao.
The Heavenly Dao descends to the world, saving the good and faithful.
Transforming the lost and the blind, returning them to Heaven.
Only with a true commission can one resolve life and death.
United in purpose, the Dao manifests in grandeur.
I, Yuehui Bodhisattva, by gracious decree, have come to the altar. I bow to the Heavenly Carriage and take up the planchette.
Heavenly Mandate! Heavenly Mandate! One pointing resolves death and grants transcendence. Most honored, most weighty — the manager's duty is truly no light matter. To carry on Heaven's work and establish the ultimate: a lamp for ten thousand people. Everywhere, everyone shows respect. The commission comes from the immortals and buddhas — receive it reverently. Think on this with fear and trembling. Hold always to the center.
Moonlight, brilliant, illuminates the courtyard.
The stars shine bright, each revealing its name.
Winter departs, spring arrives — misfortune turns to fortune.
The altar turns, the signs change, human affairs renew.
Your Master Bow-and-Long has delivered Heaven's decree.
All disciples follow, fulfilling their vows.
The managers receive the Heavenly Mandate a second time —
this is not the past. You must examine clearly.
This time, having taken your great vows anew,
you must change the half-hearted attitude of before.
Seven generations of ancestors and nine of descendants ride on this.
Never treat it as child's play.
There are still thirty articles of the regulations.
With every word and breath, you pledged to follow them.
But if Teacher Mother observes you now,
compared to before, the illness has not improved.
Why is it that the more you cultivate, the more you regress?
If conscience does not stir, how can the Dao succeed?
A cart without its yoke-pins cannot move forward.
A person without integrity can hardly survive.
As the representative of the Bright Master,
how can you speak without regard for your actions?
The manager is the standard for all people.
Every word and deed carries weight beyond measure.
If one person is genuine, ten thousand follow in truth.
If one person is false, all fall together into the pit.
To harm a person's body, one must repay with one's life.
But the spiritual account for ten thousand souls — how can that debt ever be cleared?
Teacher Mother speaks this with an aching heart.
I want to stop the planchette and say no more.
I would rather not continue — yet I must.
I hope my disciples will quickly cure these ills:
Great vows treated as toothache charms —
recited for relief, then forgotten.
Regulations treated as wind passing the ear.
Pulling this way and that to cover your own faults.
Grafting and transplanting to claim others' achievements.
Openly chanting scriptures and proclaiming justice,
secretly wielding schemes to build private alliances.
Seeing others' accomplishments fills your eyes with fire.
Seeing others' faults, you feel no compassion.
Taking responsibility upon yourself without exerting full effort,
yet wielding the Heavenly Mandate to show off your authority.
Where there is the slightest profit, you force your way in.
Where things go wrong, you push yourself clean.
When discussing matters, it is always others who are wrong.
When it comes to doing the work, it is always you who are capable.
Examining others' faults — sharp as a bright mirror.
Examining your own faults — blind as a sightless child.
If you continue like this without changing,
never mind sagehood — how can you even become worthy?
Do not complain that Teacher Mother's words are cold.
If teaching is not strict, the teacher bears the fault.
Know that the Heavenly Mandate does not abide with the ordinary.
Those who are not good will have it quietly taken back — understand this clearly.
I hope my disciples will maintain constant vigilance.
Whatever you do, do not remain lost in confusion.
From today forward, renew yourself daily.
Cast off the filthy, petty old heart.
Past wrongs, present wrongs — let there be no future wrongs.
If you still do not correct your faults, this life is finished.
Good disciples — listen!
Do not waste Teacher Mother's bitter words.
Know that the Heavenly Mandate is the most precious thing —
the loyal and filial children, selected from the thirty-six.
The gentleman has three fears, and the first is the Heavenly Mandate.
How could the Heavenly Mandate be borne by ordinary people?
The great work of the Final Gathering depends on the Heavenly Mandate.
Without the Mandate, how can ten thousand matters be set right?
With the Mandate, a thousand buddhas come to assist.
With the Mandate, ten thousand immortals answer the call.
You disciples received the Mandate and bear the holy title
because you accumulated virtue and performed great deeds in past lives.
To seek the Dao still requires three lifetimes of good fortune.
To receive the Mandate requires deep roots and perseverance.
Understanding this, you must never abandon yourselves.
Rouse again the limitless great spirit.
Nurture the younger generation according to the person and the place.
Read their words and observe their faces — know when to press forward and when to stop.
Do not see people and remain silent.
If you do not speak, how can the Dao reach them?
And do not teach without proper progression,
provoking frustration and wasting your effort.
Bearing the Heavenly Mandate, you must carry authority and weight.
Watch your step and do not follow blindly.
Choose the good and follow it; where you find yourself lacking, change.
Each person's position must be clearly understood.
Proceed step by step, heads bowed, pressing forward.
True merit and genuine goodness are the essential foundation.
Do not worry that others do not know you.
When the curtain of the White Sun era rises, true merit will be revealed.
Master and disciples, hand in hand, laughing together —
when the great work is understood, the good news will be reported above.
I will write no more. I take my leave of the Carriage. Parting from my disciples, I withdraw from the altar and return to Heaven. I withdraw.
Session Five
The Ninth Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (1949)
Compassionate Teaching of Yuehui Bodhisattva
The flowing years are like water, time flies like an arrow.
The world's affairs change in the blink of an eye.
If you do not put in the effort while still young and strong,
in old age you will only sigh in vain.
The great drama is being performed — the scenes shift and change.
Roles are assigned: scholar, maiden, painted face, clown.
Earth-shaking, ghost-stirring, enough to make spirits weep.
All of you — pay attention to this critical moment.
I, Yuehui Bodhisattva, your Teacher Mother, by decree leave the Buddha's Court. I bow to the Heavenly Carriage. I greet my worthy disciples. I take up the planchette and write once more.
Alas —
By imperial decree I leave Heaven and descend to the altar.
Meeting my disciples, I take up my brush to write these words.
A bellyful of words stored up — truly without limit.
The affairs of my heart — how could they be told in a single moment?
Looking upon the state of the world, I cannot help but sigh.
Thinking of the Heavenly timing, my heart grows more bitter.
I recall the great work of this Third Period —
the times are not the same as before.
Your Teacher's universal salvation mission has already been fulfilled.
At the very end, the time has come for the Final Gathering.
That I, your Mother, follow Heaven's command — this is the settled principle.
There is nothing I can do: the Heavenly Mandate is stern.
This great work is truly a burden beyond bearing.
How could it be easy to account for before Heaven?
The Three Realms — immortals, ghosts, and humans — are all under examination.
In human affairs, the complications multiply.
After each trial, each round brings its changes.
Through wind and waves, the risings and fallings differ.
At each crossing, each confession, each reconnection —
alas, my disciples are too muddled and mixed.
There are good people, truly many who are virtuous.
But know this: the unworthy are also plentiful.
Jade and stone are constantly confused with one another.
Even exhausting human effort, how easy is it to sort the two?
Yet even so, the final authority belongs to Heaven.
The great pivot is beyond human power to shift.
The examinations before and after — three great tests —
once the results are settled, the foolish and the wise will be distinguished.
I, your Mother, know that my own strength is truly limited.
My heart is vast, but alone, how can I steer the boat?
In truth, it is through Heaven's vast and boundless grace —
the immortals and buddhas have all risen together to help at the altar.
In the Three Heavens, not a single arhat remains.
All have descended in disguise, hidden their names, and come down to the mortal world.
Know this: at the August Mother's urging,
they manifest spirit-light and transformation, wondrous and natural.
Every buddha-nature carries out Heaven's great work.
All have benefited greatly from Heaven's radiant grace.
Because of this, my Mother's heart finds some peace.
More than that, a generation of good and worthy disciples has appeared.
Talents of the middle stream are gradually being selected and revealed.
Hand in hand, they share the great responsibility.
Only then can affairs be set in proper order.
What I, your Mother, still hope for: more understanding, more contemplation.
For the sake of all living beings, I plan and reckon every day,
making no distinction between day and night.
The loose ends in every direction are still in disarray.
To sort and set them right — how could it not cost the heart?
Do not be foolish and proud, falling into empty traps.
Bow your heads and cultivate — and you may receive Heaven's tender mercy.
You must understand: the great reckoning, before and after, is coming.
It does not matter how imposing you were in the past.
It does not matter what face you presented to the world.
It does not matter how much or how little frontier ground you broke.
It does not matter how many or how few people you brought to the Dao.
It does not matter how broad your achievements may have been.
Principle and feeling — you must learn to tell them apart.
Public and private — they are judged in the space of a single thought.
In the light and in the dark, everywhere is a test.
Straight and crooked — not a hair's breadth of leniency will be shown.
When the crisis arrives and your heart has no anchor,
I fear that all your past effort will be finished in a single stroke.
Rising and falling — speak of it and the heart trembles with fear.
Truly fearsome, this final pass.
You must hold sincerity and let it move Heaven.
Still the heart, confess, and do not deceive yourselves.
Cast off greed and vain imaginings — do not throw yourselves into chaos.
Hold to loyalty and faith, with constancy and firm resolve.
Without self and other, work together with impartial hearts.
Without barriers or obstacles, without tangles or snares.
If you can cultivate this self-mastery through constant refinement,
perhaps you may avoid being without a compass when the hour strikes.
If even now you do not prepare,
if you follow your whims, you will surely fall into the abyss.
When that moment comes and you are suddenly trapped in a bitter pit,
your regret, though real, will come too late.
Crying to Heaven, calling to the Earth,
you will find it impossible to turn yourself around.
In self-reproach, dragging your ancestors down with you.
Beating your chest and stamping your feet at the dark mountain.
See the present moment and know: this pass is no small matter.
How can you not make up your mind early?
The good days were always limited from the start.
Cherish them. Take advantage of the time. Press forward now.
Bear the heavy burden with resolute spirit.
Carry on from above, inspire and transform the younger generation.
Understand the heart of Heaven and the turning of the times.
Understand your Mother's will — share the labor as a matter of course.
Keep to your station. Accept your lot. Endure and work with patience.
If this is possible, do not delay any longer.
Do the work for a time — then you must withdraw and hide.
Follow the Heavenly timing. Human power cannot alter this.
At this pass, the changes are perilous.
Pay close attention. Do not look upon it lightly.
I, your Mother, have poured out all my heart and courage for you.
If you do not fail me — that is what makes a good disciple.
Ease my worry. Give your whole heart. Follow through.
Produce results — and you are the greatest among the worthy.
In this era, the White Sun age will manifest clearly.
When the drums and gongs are done, the great drama is finally sung complete.
Then each of you will know your own true face.
The affairs of Heaven and Earth will have their own reckoning.
When that time comes, affairs will no longer be in chaos.
The Dao will prevail, and the age of Yao and Shun will appear again.
Clapping hands with unbounded joy —
when suffering ends, the forty-eight thousand will taste sweetness.
What I, your Mother, have poured out — my heart's feelings are beyond telling.
It is for my disciples to contemplate and understand.
If even one word is understood and followed through,
held from beginning to end — you can become a buddha or immortal.
I will write no more. Take my words to heart.
Be cautious, discerning, and press forward with vitality.
I take my leave of the Carriage, parting from my disciples, and return to the Realm of Wuji. I withdraw from the altar and ride the clouds among the green mountains. I withdraw.
Session Six
The Thirteenth Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (1949)
Descended Teaching of Tianran Ancient Buddha
At the very end, the work of gathering the harvest — my heart is shattered.
How many times I have written, how many tears I have shed.
Why do you cling to delusion? Why do you sleep the dream of Nanke?
I sigh: time flows like water — once gone, it never returns.
Thinking of the past, worrying about the future — how can I not be haggard and worn?
How many have truly understood this compassionate heart?
Rise up and act! Be one who stands above the rest.
Keep your heart firm, your resolve undimmed. Act with sincerity.
I am Tianran, your teacher. By command I descend to the altar. I bow to the Heavenly Carriage. I meet my worthy disciples. I take up the planchette and write once more. Alas —
Your teacher descends to the altar and takes up the brush — ten thousand kinds of heartache.
Words fill my heart and gut, but they cannot all be spoken.
Before I take up the brush, ten thousand things clamor with no way to be written.
The moment I take it up, sorrow connects to sorrow.
Remembering the past, thinking of the future — all is on the reckoning board.
The affairs of Heaven and the human world are truly great — this is no empty talk.
Our Heavenly Dao has spread salvation universally, reaching every direction.
With the aid of spirits and buddhas, the flying planchette transforms — could human power alone achieve this?
Wherever the Dao reached, it saved the faithful, freed them from suffering, delivered them from danger.
True miracles, true evidence, trials of every kind.
This could not have been accomplished by human effort — it was done in accord with Heaven's destiny.
And so those who have reached the shore — their numbers are beyond counting.
Heavenly affairs are carried out in the human world — the three realms undergo their reckoning.
When the allotted time is fulfilled, the mandate must be returned — this is the natural order.
All these changes are part of the great examination.
The situation of each cultivator cannot be described in full.
Your teacher's return to Heaven — there were signs appointed by Heaven long beforehand.
Afterward, a great upheaval arose.
Those who recognized the new changes and stayed on the right path —
truly they can be counted like morning stars: few and scattered.
The Heavenly Mandate decreed that your Mother would take the helm — this is no light matter.
Truly she has bestowed special compassion and mercy upon each disciple.
Those who turn back with undivided heart and rediscover their Heavenly conscience —
if they truly confess, they can reconnect to the lineage and return to the fold.
Were it not for your Mother's compassion, all would have long ago lost their way.
Right and wrong, principle and feeling — who can truly see them clearly?
Your teacher's destiny was decreed by Heaven — how could it be determined by human reckoning?
Though my body has transformed, my heart remains always connected to my disciples.
For my disciples I have exhausted ten thousand kinds of care and thought.
My only fear: there will yet be more changes ahead.
When I look carefully at affairs in every quarter, at the community of cultivators —
truly, jade and stone are mixed, wheat and weeds tangled together.
True faces and false faces — who has ever clearly told them apart?
Empty and real, straight and crooked — so much remains unclear.
Without enduring great trials and repeated tempering,
I fear the extraordinary talents and the worthy ones cannot be sifted out.
Your Mother, sparing no effort, personally selects in every quarter,
spending bitter words and careful thought — all for this.
The appointed time of Heaven approaches — it is not far off.
In a single instant, the drums of Heaven will sound and ten thousand demons will rise.
Your merit and your fruit before the Dao will be reckoned without exception.
If you violated your vows and knowingly transgressed again — will Heaven be lenient?
The thunder of Heaven moves — destruction is not far off.
Speaking of this truly makes your teacher's courage run cold.
All you disciples who have already confessed and made your vows —
your cultivation must never be set aside.
I urge you above all: embody your teacher's heart. Let sincerity run through you always.
Truly reform, truly renew yourselves — then you can advance.
Being free of faults is itself a merit — always encourage yourselves thus.
Without greed and delusion, without selfish desire, you can escape the demons' entanglement.
At this moment — truly this can be called the critical juncture.
If you still go through the motions, deceiving yourselves — how pitiful.
You must build yourselves from the root, from the very foundation.
Not the slightest wavering — your heart must be settled, your resolve firm.
Subdue the dragon and tiger, nurture your heart-nature, cast away scattered thoughts.
When human desire is exhausted, Heavenly principle gradually becomes clear.
If you truly cultivate, you must not be stained again by desire and passion.
Worldly bonds and attachments — cut them with one stroke. Cultivate together, advance together.
If you truly cultivate, you cannot permit a single erring thought.
Be cautious at the smallest level, discerning in the finest detail — everything matters.
If you truly cultivate, hold your sincerity — it will move both Heaven and the hearts of others.
Virtue and authority together, firmness and gentleness in balance, lively and adaptable.
With guiding principles as your anchor, only then can you adapt to circumstances.
If you go with the current and join the corrupt, you will cast yourself into the abyss.
Sweep away the three minds, let the four appearances vanish — self and other, uncontaminated.
Without "this one" or "that one," without discrimination — all in harmony.
In all procedures, seek clarity — strive for beauty and perfection.
Looking up to Heaven, looking down to Earth — let your heart have nothing to be ashamed of.
Embody Heaven's heart and its love for life — bring all people back to their origin.
Understand your teacher's intent, promulgate the holy Dao — cross through these remaining years.
Do not fail your Mother's heart — she teaches and encourages you in person.
Walk the one true path — and you can return to the Origin.
You must understand Heaven's wondrous workings and its many arrangements.
This drama of truth — who would dare speak of it lightly?
Know this: the slightest carelessness and you will fall into your own trap.
The greater the responsibility, the greater the danger.
If one person is wise and clear, ten thousand receive the blessing.
If one person is deluded, ten thousand fall into the abyss.
Even your ancestors of nine generations are swept along — how lamentable.
Any leader who hears these words — can your courage not run cold?
Ever more like standing at the edge of an abyss, treading on thin ice.
The further you advance in cultivation, the more you realize its immense difficulty.
Cultivating our Dao appears simple on the surface —
but if you trace it to its root, it is anything but ordinary.
It is for each disciple to examine their own cultivation through tempering.
If you apply your heart sincerely, you will understand.
Through genuine experience — examining body and mind —
the more refined it becomes, the more one must be cautious, the harder it grows.
Extending this to every plan and deed, examining yourself at every turn —
you can thereby verify the depth and shallowness of your karmic connections.
Always use this to encourage yourself — do not take it lightly.
If you let this time pass empty, the future will be unbearable.
Since you already have some understanding, rouse yourselves and act.
Know the Heavenly timing, observe the earthly conditions — let these be your compass.
Do not let the heart go slack, do not let the will flag — this determines completion.
Even if you exhaust your own strength in fulfilling your duty, the greater body will prevail.
Though the Heavenly pivot is already hidden, there will yet be one more revelation.
Carry out each task in proper order — seek stability and peace.
When it is time to step forward, step forward — show your true face.
When it is time to conceal yourself, hide your form — Heaven secretly selects the worthy.
These affairs truly require careful attention and discernment.
The great sorting of all affairs must follow Heaven's will.
Light turns to dark, dark turns to light — this is not for humans to calculate.
Adversity becomes fortune, fortune becomes adversity — follow the natural course.
You must always be true-hearted through and through.
You must always be able to endure humiliation with an ocean's capacity.
You must always have vision: high, broad, and far.
You must always stand firm on your feet, never bending.
You must always hold firm to your own judgment.
You must always use wisdom to distinguish right from wrong.
You must always rely on utmost sincerity to move Heaven.
You must always rely on your conscience and never deceive yourself.
Do not be lenient with yourself, do not excuse yourself — cultivate in earnest.
When the time comes, though ten thousand tests descend, let your resolve be hard as steel.
Do not fear the rushing storms or the towering perils.
Do not let gold or silver shake your heart.
Do not fear the demons and their myriad terrors.
Still less fear violence and brutality, however imposing.
With righteous spirit, never faltering, drive back the evil and the corrupt.
In the end, stand in magnificent spirit, spanning earth and heaven.
If you meet the critical pass, examine your heart.
The greatest thing is to give your body for the Dao.
Follow truth, exhaust righteousness — their value is without limit.
Even this is only a small repayment to Heaven.
I hope my disciples will bring forth loyal hearts and burning courage.
In earnest, accomplish this mission — in the blink of an eye it will be done.
The favorable time for doing meritorious work is truly not far off.
See how the winds of the world are changing — all four seas are in turmoil.
Dragons contend and tigers fight — where is there peace?
If the Dao goes into hiding and you try to build merit afterward — will it not be too late?
At this time, you absolutely must not fail to rouse yourselves.
Always polish, always refine — advance day by day.
What your teacher has shown in this one writing — the feelings remaining are without limit.
These are words from the depths of my heart — I hope my disciples will contemplate and understand them.
I will write no more. I set down the planchette.
The matters in my heart are still too many to speak of in one moment.
Now I bid farewell to my worthy disciples and withdraw from the altar to return. My only wish: that you will follow these words and ease your teacher's heart. I withdraw.
Session Seven
The Fifteenth Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (1949)
Descended Teaching of Tianran Ancient Buddha
The qi of destiny is just now changing — Heaven's timing grows yet more urgent.
Observing the direction of the wind, I cannot help but be stricken.
Examining human affairs — still so much left unheeded.
Again I worry for my disciples — their mediocrity, their foolishness,
who have lost sight of the standard.
The ancient temple bell rings ceaselessly —
alarming beyond measure.
Look clearly at the road ahead — what does it hold?
Rouse yourselves early and shoulder your responsibility.
You must know: constancy, sincerity, firmness, and resolve.
Let your will be calm and steady.
I, Tianran Ancient Buddha, your Teacher Gongzhang, by imperial edict descend to the Dharma altar. I pay my respects to the Imperial Carriage. Joyfully meeting this auspicious occasion — the Spring Festival Great Ceremony — all things renewed. Your Teacher is moved once more, with feelings beyond measure. Specially borrowing the jade brush to convey teachings to all the faithful. First calm your breath and listen carefully to what I say. Sigh —
Your Teacher takes up the planchette — ten thousand feelings in my heart.
By grace, today I meet this good occasion.
Spring Festival celebrated together — spirits and humans alike are honored.
Through utmost sincerity, the visible and invisible are joined as one.
Boundless feelings — sorrow wells from within.
Recalling the past, gazing toward the future.
The great matter of the final days — Heaven's appointed hour draws near.
How can one fathom it — chaos still unremedied.
The Dao's destiny is changing — how could it be the same as before.
This final Universal Salvation — do not look upon it lightly.
The Eternal Mother weeps with compassion — haggard and worn all day.
If only there were more filial and worthy ones to comfort the Parent's heart.
All manner of parting sorrows — thinking of them, the heart grieves.
Chaotic clouds gathering — spring's colors turned to autumn.
Flowing water passes on — cherish the appointed time.
How many auspicious moments, once missed, are hard to meet again.
Carefully examine your own hearts — investigate the Way of Heaven and humanity.
Do not neglect this any longer — lest you sink and fall of your own accord.
The hour grows late — how can you afford further delay.
The great calamity draws ever closer — how perilous it is.
Affairs are in turmoil — order and chaos, rise and fall.
Right and wrong, success and failure — do not blind yourself to principle.
Unfurl your sky-piercing ambitions early — stretch your great aspirations now.
Steadfast and unwavering — aspire to sagehood, aspire to the divine.
Embody Heaven's compassionate grace — rescue the people of this world.
Let the brethren return to the root — the Dao's destiny renewed.
Of one breath, joined in principle — originally one body.
Sorrow and joy intertwined — shoulder the responsibility.
Investigate Heaven's timing — strive and pursue with urgency.
Hold your aim firm and steady — so you may cross the final autumn.
Rouse yourselves to action — become heroic leaders.
Redouble your spirit — bring glory to your ancestral spirits.
Follow the times, discern the destiny — spread the true Dao.
None of this is trivial — there is always a reason behind it.
The burden is not light — how can you slacken.
Constantly examine yourselves — be careful in word and deed.
Teach by personal example — the Way of non-contrivance.
Open your heart with utter sincerity — subtle and wondrous.
Move Heaven without pretense — repent from beginning to end.
Enrich and concentrate — let brilliance be your beauty.
Harmonious yet not swept along — composed and free.
Neither clinging nor frivolous.
Strict in self-discipline — embody the practice deeply.
Faithful in treating others — investigate the subtlest beginnings with utmost depth.
Nourish the heart, diminish desire — sweep away the marks upon the mind.
With few obstructions, little darkness will obscure the light.
Trace the root, pursue the branches — advance and investigate.
When wonder meets the heart — do not carelessly destroy it.
As times turn and scenes shift — problems arise everywhere.
Since you bear responsibility — do not cling to delusion.
Wind and rain unceasing — now bright, now dark.
Events have their causes — calculate carefully.
This time is no small matter — examine yourselves.
Pay attention to practice — pay attention to seeking.
Set your foundation without error — take firm hold of the handle.
Follow the rules and walk the path — true and real, without falsehood.
Hold your aspirations with constancy — consistent from first to last.
Though you meet hardship — do not stop halfway.
Keep your bearing calm — mind level, will settled.
Find the clear thread — begin to correct what is wrong.
Do not defy Heaven's will — always investigate.
Do not harbor excuses — cultivate your responsibility.
Affairs change ten thousand ways — how easily can one predict them.
It is for you to recognize the turning point and act with understanding.
This very moment — slow and urgent, gradual and swift.
Adapt to changes with flexible authority — only then will there be no obstruction.
What does the road ahead hold — the sea rises in waves.
Steer the Dharma boat steadily — polish your efforts together.
Do not fear the wind and dust — labor diligently morning and evening.
Hardship is the root — only then can merit be built.
Cherish time, measure your strength — lift each other's spirit.
Attend to the essentials, truly cultivate — ceaselessly strengthen yourselves.
The stakes are extraordinary — do not let them grow dim.
Your own ancestral spirits — carried on your two shoulders.
With every rise and fall — can you not feel shame before yourself.
Trembling and cautious — how dare you retreat even slightly.
The days remaining are few — make your decisions early.
Miss the opportunity, defy the time — what use is self-regret.
Time flows like water — you should know to repent.
Day and night without slacking — burning the midnight oil.
Rectifying yourself is foremost — then establish the teaching for others.
Devote your whole heart to nothing else — practice merit, repay grace.
As the years pass softly — do not grow idle or lazy.
Heaven's virtue is broadly bestowed — the heart should give thanks.
At critical junctures — grow in wisdom and strategy.
The more you encounter demonic trials — the more you should truly cultivate.
Constant and unchanging — the true nature of a hero.
Endure this one moment — joy for ten thousand ages.
Not much longer now — Heaven's pivot is turning.
The spectacle of the final days — the heart chills, the spirit trembles.
Heaven dark, earth dim — all murky and turbid.
Your own light — take charge of it early.
Set your course early — arrange the order of things.
In this great matter — extraordinary talents are being selected.
Handle it with true heart and real effort — in the end you will become a model.
Heaven and the abyss, two paths — determined by a single thought.
Plan for the future — investigate and awaken to clarity.
Follow Heaven, accord with humanity — and naturally no calamity will come.
Overcast and clear alternate — hard to fathom the meaning.
Guard your station, wait for the moment — endure this juncture.
Proclaim the teaching on Heaven's behalf — sail the ship of compassion together.
To assist in this final move — the responsibility is immense.
Know that subtle mystery is in everything — every matter contains it.
Even the most minute things — do not treat any of them lightly.
Look ahead with courage, attend to what lies behind — watch left and right with care.
You cannot be careless — once lost, it is hard to recover.
Distinguish right from wrong — do not let your conscience be found wanting.
Competing for advantage, comparing high and low — this is not the action you need.
Assess the times, gauge the situation — cherish these days.
Set your body and mind in order — clarity above all.
Do not be self-proud — do not let arrogance rise.
Even a trace of this mind — and the result is ruined.
Heed the laws of Heaven — make them manifest with care.
The severity of rise and fall — how can you not stand in awe.
Since you cultivate and serve — take responsibility and bring it to perfection.
Seek their fulfillment — only then are your vows completed.
Embody Heaven's compassion — bring the original people home.
Embody your Teacher's hopes — establish the Dao, cultivate virtue.
This moment is not the past — the task of gathering in is vast.
Fortunately, your Teacher Mother responds to destiny, holding the altar.
Carrying forward and opening new paths — extraordinary talent for spreading the Dao.
Rushing and toiling — with feelings beyond measure.
But for you, my disciples — what road do I fear.
Not declining any hardship — arranging the good plan.
Since you are my disciples — you should embody this heart.
Let your hearts not be anxious — share the burden and rise up.
Prepare to advance — guard your proper station.
Stop hesitating — rouse yourselves even more.
Heaven's mechanism is hard to predict — weigh the moment carefully.
Find the thread — set the pattern.
How can we divide before and after — together in strength we rescue.
Pulling back the raging waves — children of one Mother, flesh and bone.
Fulfill your duties to repay grace — and slightly comfort the Parent's heart.
Hearts calm, wills steady — from beginning to end, never divided.
Seize the time and prepare — today it is not yet too late.
If you hesitate — the harm to yourself is not small.
Your Teacher's words, this one time — consider the inner meaning.
Do not betray this compassionate thought — put action first.
Assist your Mother — support the great matter.
Glory in the days to come — heads held high, spirits proud.
The Dao illuminating all under heaven — virtue's wind broad and great.
The whole world admiring together — ten thousand nations giving welcome.
When the True Person appears — the path will be clearly distinguished.
White Yang glory and celebration — spirits and mortals at ease.
It lies in this very moment — swiftly make your plans.
Set your foundation firm — together become great vessels.
Embody your Teacher's instructions — become wise and good.
A thousand words, ten thousand sayings — all for you, my disciples.
Bitter advice is good medicine — know this first.
Understand and obey — only then will the results be wondrous.
My words end here — I will write no more.
Ten thousand kinds of good counsel — hard to exhaust them all.
It is for you, disciples, not to betray this — remember firmly.
Follow the order without error — improve day by day.
Your Teacher now withdraws from the altar, takes leave, and returns to Heaven. My only wish: that you will not waste this good opportunity — reflect upon it well. Farewell, worthy disciples — I depart from the altar grounds. Mounting auspicious clouds, roaming the great atmosphere. Withdraws.
Session Eight
The Sixteenth Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (1949)
Compassionate Teaching of Yuehui Bodhisattva
Bitter words have all been spoken. My compassionate heart is used up and broken.
Yet how is it that the foolish and obstinate still do not understand?
Blind, blind, blind!
I have exhausted a thousand methods, employed a hundred stratagems — why will you not comprehend?
The auspicious hour is precious indeed — seize the time and prepare quickly.
Only through self-reflection and inner questioning can you truly know.
Shame, shame, shame!
Repent the past, prepare the future — redouble your spirit.
I, Yuehui, your Teacher Mother, by command depart from the Purple Tenuity and descend to the Dharma altar to meet my disciples. I pay my respects to the Carriage. Once more I take up the planchette brush to speak of what lies in my heart and gut. Sigh —
Taking up the planchette, turning the sand tray, I issue instructions and reminders.
To you worthy disciples I speak once more of boundless feelings.
The words in my heart are truly without end — each of you, receive them carefully.
If you can appreciate your Mother's concern, then listen and go forth to act.
I only worry about this lot of ignorant and foolish disciples.
Though they have cultivated for several years, the true principle remains unclear.
Still dim and confused, always deluding themselves — the dream of Nanke unawakened.
Not hearing the ancient temple's continuous morning bell.
At the fifth watch, heaven has brightened, yet they are still in their spring dream.
Though they have reached the shore, how are they different from ordinary people?
Do not say that merely because you cultivate the Dao, you should count yourself fortunate.
You must truly cultivate in earnest — do not hang on an empty name.
Thinking of you, this lot of cultivating disciples —
truly, you have been blessed by Heaven's timing with such great glory.
Born in the land of China in the age of the Third Period.
By good karma and ancestral virtue, you encountered the true Dao.
Meeting the Bright Teacher, receiving his pointing, suddenly seeing your nature —
these four difficulties becoming four easements, truly no small matter.
Moreover, over these years you have endured many changes.
And for the Dao's sake, endured untold sacrifices.
Among you, those who understand the Dao's preciousness are truly courageous.
They have taken many vows to assist the Dao and practice merit.
Spending every kind of hardship, rushing about in every direction.
Enduring all manner of trials, wearing the moon, cloaked in stars.
For cultivation they left behind their parents and homes.
For cultivation they cast aside wife and love.
For cultivation they ceased to observe worldly social niceties.
For cultivation they endured every kind of slander and criticism.
For cultivation they passed through demonic trials with unyielding resolve.
For cultivation they met with adversity and never changed their purpose.
Naturally, this was all because they saw clearly the Dao's importance.
Had they not treasured the Dao, how could they have borne such things?
They made their declarations and led the later students.
Opening this flower, spreading the Dao — their achievements are praiseworthy.
Bearing a weighty responsibility, they should be all the more cautious.
At this point you truly need to have a plumb line.
Cultivators who can do this are truly worthy of respect.
This lot cannot be said to be anything other than worthy and talented.
In the past, your Mother's heart was glad.
But I worry that just like this, it will be hard to maintain from start to finish.
The moment I think of the three rounds of examination, one linked to the next —
once you cultivate the Dao, it is not easy to escape.
Each disciple does not know the changes that lie ahead.
Your Mother's compassionate heart therefore rushes about without rest.
In every direction, leaving behind evidence of testing for the worthy disciples.
Only urging: when you encounter the great tests, do not let go of the thread.
Plant the prior causes, always hoping the results will flourish.
And indeed, Heaven sent down a test — a storm of waves and wind.
Your Teacher Patriarch ascended to Heaven in death — chaos and upheaval followed.
Ask yourselves, disciples — who among you had a plumb line?
This was always meant to follow Heaven's destined plan.
At that time, the great majority were confused and could not distinguish.
The reason, you must know, was not a matter of luck.
Your cultivation's foundation was not firm and constant.
You only paid attention to spreading and perfecting for others.
Attending to the external, following the superficial — your inner cultivation was not rich.
On the ground of the heart there were obstructions, your self-examination impure.
In your aims there was greed and delusion, never yet clarified.
When this test came, it revealed depth and shallowness, deviance and correctness.
Heaven's destined sorting — separating jade from stone, foolish from wise.
Only by the result were the worthy and foolish differentiated.
Chasing surfaces, attending to false appearances, biased by personal feelings.
Truly awaken, then continue cultivating — take this as your handle.
Your Mother fears that those who can do this are as few as morning stars.
Though your Teacher Patriarch's mandate was fulfilled, the great matter was not yet settled.
If there was a beginning, how can there be no completion?
The Universal Salvation has also turned into the path of Gathering-in.
Just arriving at the final move, a great upheaval arises.
Your Mother's bitter heart for you disciples, though already spent —
at that time, I truly could not bear to watch and not respond.
The many kinds of changes in the disciples' situations —
if I do not add further guidance, how will you see the light?
Heaven's compassion early ordained this Heavenly Mandate.
Your Mother cannot bear to delay further for these lost ones.
Therefore, enduring all hardship, setting aside sentiment —
specially for all these disciples, spending my compassionate heart once more.
Your accumulated bad habits and ailments from the past —
the personal feelings you bore in the course of serving the Dao —
there is nothing for it but to obey your Mother's instruction and repent completely.
Heaven specially pardons — the great reckoning, settling the old accounts.
With this great repentance, things can still be somewhat set in order.
Know clearly: the more you perfect yourself, the more the trials intensify.
Buddhas and demons confront each other, competing back and forth.
Your Mother must still instruct you about the matters to come.
Truly, because seeking thoroughness is no light undertaking.
Your Mother worries about affairs everywhere, personally going to set them in order.
Yet because the matters of the final days are even harder to settle —
the more I try to set things in order, the more unrest appears.
Finding the thread, following the sequence, attending at every moment.
One moment of carelessness and the demon wind slips in.
Now, principle and feeling are divided into two paths.
Buddha and demon — it depends on how you apply your effort.
Without receiving hardship and suffering, the Dao's foundation is hard to set.
You must know: the Dao rises one foot, the demon wind rises ten.
If you have no true handle, no firm judgment of your own —
how frightening — when the test comes, all prior merit is cast away.
This is truly one strike of the gong — one strike and the tone is fixed.
All things are prepared — only this one winter remains.
Cultivating for years — only this final examination remains.
To be careless in this instant — would that not be heartbreaking?
Your Mother — for which disciple have I not spent bitter pain?
More than for flesh and blood — which one do I not cherish?
The stakes are great — it is all your own life and death.
And moreover, it implicates your later students without end.
One person advances — ten thousand receive blessed fortune.
One person is foolish — ten thousand fall together into the pit of suffering.
And moreover, nine generations of ancestors are implicated together.
A single wrong thought — between alarm and joy, between falling and rising.
Thinking of this, truly my heart for you disciples hangs in uncertainty.
I truly fear that when the time comes, one error topples a hundred.
Your Mother has nothing else — only to warn you beforehand.
It is for each of you to set body and mind in order from the root.
Before Heaven, you must bring forth your conscience and heavenly nature.
Before the Heavenly Dao, you must bring forth a red heart of loyalty.
When a single thought arises, do not allow principle and desire to coexist.
In a single thought, between flourishing and decline — your self-examination must not slacken.
In every action, be cautious of the result — do not act carelessly.
Truly you must examine yourself three times and repent without ceasing.
The moment you discover a lapse in self-examination, correct it immediately.
Truly grit your teeth — do not be lenient with yourself.
Greedy and deluded thoughts — sweep them clean to the last thread.
Minds of partiality — remove them all, hold to impartial fairness.
Do not be self-righteous, do not be self-satisfied — exchange loyal advice and honest counsel.
Without self-righteousness, without obstinacy — open up the road ahead.
Each applying heart and mind, united as one body, sharing strength.
Together for the Dao, discern and manage this final stretch.
Hold to vigilance and caution — lest the later students receive wrongly.
This responsibility — constantly reflect, never dare to slacken.
Follow your Mother's words, embody your Mother's intent — hold your aim forever firm.
In this moment, endure much — await the light that follows.
Even when you meet setbacks, rouse yourself to greater courage.
Through a hundred refinements, a thousand hammerings — ever purer, ever finer.
Well prepared for the final moment — assisting the great matter.
When the time comes, the True Ancestor appears — together with the Golden Patriarch.
In response to the Three Buddhas, gathering all in — the Three Realms sorted and settled.
Then shall the saints and the worthy be distinguished — merit determined by its fruit.
In this situation, at this time, take care early.
There is still one more critical pass to go through before all becomes clear.
It will not be long — I fear everything will rise up at once.
The roots disrupted — and so arrives the final stretch.
The thread is connected — but be careful, the wind blows and the rain presses.
If it breaks again, ask yourself — can you reconnect it?
The test has arrived — a host of demons rise, within and without, in tandem.
How can you still harbor even a trace of partiality or self-interest?
These next few months, steady and clear, things may still be set in order.
When Heaven's net opens in the latter half of the year, there will be no leniency.
And again the dragon and tiger fight, twin serpents compete.
Cultivators of the Dao will endure humiliation — a scene of bitter suffering.
Endure through this one moment — the glory of the Universal Salvation.
When bitterness is exhausted, sweetness will come — winter will have its end.
Heaven's timing grows more urgent by the day — do not be dull and confused.
If you relax your grip even slightly, you will never catch up again.
Disciples, do not fail the grace of Heaven that still remains.
Otherwise, the test will descend early and bring suffering to all beings.
Grace cannot be greater — but if pushed too far back, the end is only terror.
Sooner or later, this stretch cannot be avoided.
My words come first — I have given clear instructions to the disciples.
When that time comes, if you do not obey, you harm and topple only yourselves.
Do not then complain that Heaven is not compassionate or that your Teacher's heart lacked mercy.
Do not then complain that your Mother's treatment fell short of feeling.
These heartfelt words — reflect on them carefully, before and after.
You should also have found by now your plumb line.
Your Mother can only open her eyes and watch you advance.
All my hope is placed upon you worthy disciples to carry it out.
Your Mother's great responsibility — without extraordinary talents to assist,
it would not be easy to manage everything to fulfillment and completion.
Teacher and disciple united as one — mother and children, heavenly nature.
I pray Heaven has mercy — let us endure through this remaining winter.
My words end here — your Mother will not press further.
I only hope my disciples will truly embody my thoughts and comfort my spirit.
I set down the brush, take leave of the Carriage, and return to the Realm of Principle. Farewell, disciples — we shall meet again. I withdraw from the altar, mounting the clouds. Withdraws.
Session Nine
The Sixteenth Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (1949)
Teaching of the Three-Heaven Examiner (三天主考), Maotian (茂田)
Affairs of the world — fortune and misfortune, success and failure.
Through all the ages — order and chaos, rise and fall.
How many heroes were lost in the fog and buried?
Only the green burial mounds remain.
See through it all and leave the bitter sea early.
See clearly — never try to be clever.
Where you should learn to be simple, be simple,
and this body will happily find its peace.
I am the Examiner Maotian, arrived by divine command from the Celestial Platform to attend and pay my respects. Let me speak once more. The Spring Festival has passed, and such auspicious days will not come again easily. Cherish this fine occasion and hasten your cultivation. Today I take up the brush — hear what I have to say. Haha.
The sky shifts from clear to dark — who can judge the weather?
The storm breaks, the wild wind blows.
In an instant everything turns to blackness.
This red dust — how hateful it is.
Bitter, sour, pungent, sharp — you have tasted them all.
You bore it, you swallowed it down.
A hundred years of glory — joy has its limits.
Youth, prime, old age — the thread does not break.
Even a puppet can change its act,
but when impermanence arrives, it takes only a moment.
You stretch your legs and the breath is cut.
How much grief came before, how much confusion.
There is only the hundred-year span.
Life and death — this is the great threshold.
Who among you has ever been willing to face this early?
This body of form will rot in the end.
A wine-bag and a rice-sack — what is there to envy?
Look again at all eight directions:
calamity and killing-energy spread everywhere.
Born into this age, you meet disaster.
Natural catastrophe and human-made disaster, both entangled.
The people suffer — trampled, burned.
Swords, soldiers, flood, fire — beyond reckoning.
War clouds rise, beacon fires blaze.
In the end, wife separated, children scattered.
East, west — fleeing. North, south — running.
Where is the peaceful dwelling?
And still there is famine.
The problem of food and clothing stretches wide.
You meet danger, you face the raging waves.
The bitter sea has always had no shore.
You must understand: this calamity —
all of it appears by fixed destiny according to the age's turning.
Evil karma is vast; goodness is scarce.
Great transgressions have filled heaven and earth.
They have touched Heaven's wrath, and the catastrophe ferments.
Retribution shines bright — how could it change?
The unworthy are gathered in, the treacherous removed.
What remains are the faithful who meet the golden thread.
Heaven's grace, virtue without limit.
A Dharma vessel has been specially set sailing across the four seas,
everywhere it goes, reaching every shore,
seeking only the original people, to bring them aboard early.
In answer to this age, the True Lineage appears.
The ancient secret treasure — do not take it lightly.
Roots deep, nature virtuous —
your ancestors' remaining merit has been seen by Heaven.
By chance encounter, on an auspicious day,
you were shown the true original face.
This one point — contemplate it carefully.
Since ancient times it was never openly transmitted.
Now that you have received it, cultivate early.
Having gained the root, attend to the branches — see the order clearly.
Beginning and end, threaded together.
From the moment you take it up, never put it down.
Know this: your aspiration must shine.
Bring forth your heavenly conscience — then you are a true hero.
Cultivate the True Principle in the gathering dark.
The false and the real — you must distinguish them.
Test by the ancients, verify by evidence.
At all times keep your wisdom sharp.
This is the moment — attend to the Final Gathering.
The final move is greatly praiseworthy.
Gods and buddhas help — all appearing together.
They descend in disguise to urge the original people.
Each one prepares, each builds merit.
For Heaven's time is severely limited.
All brothers — you must act.
Each of you holds past-life roots — greatly praiseworthy.
Your roots are not shallow; do not underestimate yourselves.
Make your effort now, go forward and do the work.
After years of cultivation, you gain experience.
Always cross-verify, check against one another.
Brothers together, becoming one body.
Open your hearts to each other in sincerity.
Help the final mission — pour out your hearts.
Only to repay Heaven's grace and fulfill your vows.
Truly because you have received the Mother's merciful gaze.
Even giving your life could not repay what is owed.
Your very nature and life are saved — they reach the Buddha's hall.
Now is the time to truly cultivate and build merit early.
Your nine-generation ancestors are waiting.
They have watched through autumn waters for this moment.
Reflect deeply, make your reckoning.
Seize the moment, establish your principles.
Follow the example of the ancient sages — time is the test.
Once a word leaves your mouth, you must follow through.
Value personal practice, value real action.
False sentiment and pretense will trap you in the end.
Understand clearly — this is the crucial point.
Heaven's purpose is both visible and hidden.
The wind is fast or slow, the waves quick or gentle.
Watch for when to cast anchor and when to pull the line.
Join hands and go forward together.
The Dharma vessel crosses the waves steadily.
Painstaking effort builds the foundation.
One labor, eternal ease — it will be realized.
At this time, put it into practice.
You must not overlook this turning.
Rising or falling — it lies in a single thought.
Be utterly vigilant, trembling with care,
as though walking on ice, standing at the edge of a deep ravine.
The slightest carelessness and you sink.
Avoid regret — plan ahead.
Rouse your spirit and take action!
Rise up, let your aspiration run through everything.
Never be despondent or lazy.
Through all twelve hours, inspect and examine yourself.
This heart must never be allowed to linger or lag.
Rein in the wandering mind, dwell in the quiet hall.
Reduce desire — this covering has its own tempering.
Correct yourself first, then urge others.
Lead by example — this is the model.
A true rare talent who has passed through much goodness.
The result will naturally thread toward the goal.
In Heaven's hidden choosing — this is the key.
Genuine cultivation and real action — these are praiseworthy.
Bitterness as root, toil as manifestation.
Unite hearts, share purpose, work from principle.
Help each other more, spread the teaching with full hearts.
Do not be stained by worldly labor — see through it early.
Grace and love — do not cling to them.
You must be resolute — cut with one stroke.
The heart undivided, one breath running through.
If you waver, if you doubt, you will trap yourself.
Be careful where you step, walk the path ahead.
Do not enter rough terrain and walk into darkness.
Keep your virtue steady, hold your own judgment.
No matter what demonic test — your resolve does not change.
How many hearts have been deceived and led astray?
All manner of temptations — do not admire them.
The heart unmoved, the mind unshaken —
only then can you stand clear before Heaven.
If you lose your guard, demonic obstacles appear.
Suffering will follow — endless, without limit.
If you grow careless — look closely.
Before long, all things will change.
The great test comes, and the thread may break again.
Ask yourself: do you have a settled view?
Searching for a thread, casting in four directions —
I fear it will not be easy, nor convenient.
When that time comes — dark and dim —
hold fast to your roots, do not fall into chaos.
Do not let go, keep the thread always running through.
Perhaps then it will not break.
That scene is the true examination —
Heavenly principle and human feeling, both at stake.
If you cannot distinguish them, it becomes unbearable.
You make your own trouble, you test yourself.
So much excitement, so many tricks —
scene after scene, so vivid, so colorful.
They make you rejoice, they make you admire.
A dazzling array of diversions, all at once.
Left-way paths arise, side gates appear.
Heresies spring up a hundredfold, causing great upheaval.
True and false mingle — hard to tell apart.
Each one shows off its abilities, each makes a display.
But by Heaven's turning, by authority given —
there must come this sifting of the worthy.
True heroes hold their own judgment
and naturally turn toward the light, abandoning the dark.
Having found the straight path, receiving Heaven's recommendation,
they shoulder the great mission and carry it out.
The reorganization comes — the Cloud City appears.
All enter, whether from north of Zhao or south of Yan.
To be chosen — this is no small thing.
Three, six, four, eight — the final accounting is set.
The sages and worthies leave their example.
According to merit, the fruit is determined, all judged together.
The great reunion — the Dragon-Flower Feast —
this is the Grand Tribunal of the Three Realms.
The Old Ancestor appears, and all things are made right.
One call, a hundred answers — not the slightest disorder.
The great pattern is settled, all eight directions at peace.
The nine continents turn in reverence, offering sincerity.
The Final Gathering accomplished, all tasks perfected —
this is the true experience of a lifetime.
The Dao is accomplished in Heaven — all celebrate together.
Your name endures forever, passed down through the ages.
You become a teacher's model, a pattern for future generations.
The fragrance extends without end, never broken.
At that time — joy without limit.
Brothers clapping hands, linking arm to arm.
Free to roam, free to gaze.
Dwelling forever in the Realm of Principle, the Court of Ultimate Joy.
This good outcome is built now.
Plant good causes while the day is auspicious.
We brothers — no division between us.
Do not speak of "you" and "me" as though we are separated.
At this time, exert your strength without ceasing.
Always embody Heaven's heart and the Teacher's care.
The Mother's mercy and compassion, the affectionate teaching and urging —
you should know what all of this was for.
Hearts worn to pieces, guts wrenched apart —
every bitter word spent. You should see it clearly.
Do not betray this trust. Follow the command and act.
Share the burden, pour out your hearts — do not be slow.
Time flies — it goes like an arrow.
The days grow more urgent — make your reckoning.
All the qi-immortals tremble in heart and courage,
breaking their heads to board the vessel.
For truly, the great transformation is upon us.
All fear the day the heavenly drum sounds.
Once your roots are settled and the matter decided,
to seek the transmission again will not be granted.
Those not yet signed in the White Sun register
will also suffer the great calamity of the final days.
Unable to return to the root — suffering without limit.
Therefore at this time, board the vessel urgently.
All brothers — reckon carefully.
The immortals and buddhas never deceive anyone.
Settle your affairs quickly, leave nothing owed.
Gather your courage and go forward.
Take these words as your examination —
then you will know the true feeling, the whole heart.
Now I write no more, I judge no more. I take my leave, bow, and depart the altar hall. Farewell, brothers — until we meet again. Do not forget what this brother holds in his heart. Haha. Withdraws.
Session Ten
The Eighteenth Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (1949)
Compassionate Teaching of Yuehui Bodhisattva
Time truly flies — the auspicious moment will not wait.
I press these foolish disciples urgently:
love yourselves, stop being stubborn and closed.
Stop being blind. Stop shutting your ears.
Know this — the great test comes soon.
How terrible it will be.
My compassionate heart is already sick with worry.
Why have you taken my bitter, earnest words
and thrown them beyond the ninth heaven?
Don't you understand?
This is like the race of the tortoise and the hare.
Do not flaunt your cleverness and your tricks —
quick eyes, quick legs —
do not be proud, do not be arrogant.
You must truly be able to endure humiliation,
bear heavy burdens, and strengthen yourselves without tiring.
Only when all bitterness is exhausted and sweetness comes —
that is the final freedom.
I am Yuehui Bodhisattva. Your Teacher-Mother arrives. By Heaven's command I have left the Jasper Terrace. Disciples, be still — listen carefully and understand. Through the planchette I take up the brush to pour out what is in my heart. Sigh!
I take up the bamboo brush to instruct with worthy words.
Let me speak again from my innermost heart and guts.
It is nothing less than this: Heaven's time is about to change.
Some disciples still have not studied this carefully.
Across the land, east and west, chaos reigns.
In this great calamity, where is there peace?
Those who meet upheaval are scattered, driven apart.
All sentient beings suffer — it is truly pitiable.
With a grandmother's heart, I seek to ferry you through the final days.
By Heaven's grace, this great mission falls on my shoulders.
I set sail the Dharma vessel to gather and rescue the original people —
to save them from the calamity, to comfort the faithful.
I have already exhausted my bitter words and broad persuasion.
But alas — the lost ones still have not understood.
Though those who boarded the vessel are countless,
those who fell into the calamity are even more.
For those who sought the Dao, I have spent even more compassion.
If they do not understand the principle, is it not all in vain?
The Dao is precious, but you must still cultivate it.
If your vow is not fulfilled, how can you return home?
You must also have a heart full of compassion.
I only hope you understand the principle and move forward.
In this Third Period, receiving the Dao is quite easy.
The first steps of cultivation are not hard either.
The true staircase rises step by step, higher and further.
The further you advance, the more extraordinary it becomes.
Those who demonstrate their conduct through good works
are promoted to bear the duty of Initiating Master.
Some go to open new ground, spreading the Dao in all directions,
relying on nothing but a heart of pure sincerity.
Gradually the work expands, the results are impressive.
The junior disciples have also become numerous.
At this point, though you have gained experience,
I still fear your true resolve is not firm.
Heaven selects extraordinary talents through hardship —
you must endure much suffering.
Along the way, you must pass through this demonic tempering.
Only then can you be called a standard-bearer.
Only then will you understand: the further you cultivate, the more dangerous it becomes.
The heavier the duty, the less your heart can rest.
The junior disciples you lead — all of them —
their direction depends entirely on whether you stand straight or lean.
When the Dao's fortune shifts, it is not for humans to predict.
In favorable and adverse times alike, they look to you for guidance.
Up to now, three rounds of upheaval have passed.
When I remember those times — how painful it is.
Truly, those who fell were very many.
Those who truly held their ground are scarce and rare.
Now the Heavenly Mandate has shifted.
I, your Teacher-Mother, have received special grace and leniency.
Having the Heavenly Mandate, how could I defy it?
On one hand, I worry about my worthy disciples.
Your Teacher cannot bear to stand by and watch.
You face Heaven's tests — you must awaken and reflect on your own.
When your Teacher departed, there was great chaos.
The Mother's heart was worn thin, uneasy from morning to night.
When Heaven's mandate arrives, it must be so.
This is how disciples are divided into foolish and wise.
How many could not settle their understanding of principle?
How many were panicked and uneasy?
How many were ensnared by human attachments?
How many let true and false mingle together?
Those who truly have clear vision —
they are as rare as the morning star.
If not for the Mother's continued bitter pleading,
especially extending the golden thread with compassion —
truly, they would have fallen into darkness long ago,
burrowing into dead ends on treacherous paths.
Some have turned their hearts around.
Heaven granted a great amnesty — they repented and were enrolled again.
Only then did things begin to settle into order,
each one, by grace, following without deviation.
But the Mother's heart has never been at peace.
Affairs in every direction are complex and numerous.
Though they have already repented and progressed,
I still fear they are not yet clean.
If your seed is not pure,
you must know: this is the root of disaster.
Cultivators are in chaos everywhere —
different faces, each with their own compass.
If you cannot unite and thread together,
you cannot truly guarantee peace.
The Mother worries about affairs in every direction.
Therefore I must personally see them through.
Also because the final days are harder to manage —
this round is nothing like before.
All of you should know: Heaven's time grows tighter by the day.
The qi-heaven immortals are anxious to board the vessel.
The Mother cannot delay the immortals' portion.
For this matter I rush in every direction.
It is clear enough: the cycle of fortune has turned.
The very last great gate is upon you.
I tell you once: disciples should know this.
It will not be easy to simply pass through the remaining years.
Though at this moment it has not yet manifested,
before long, the storm will inevitably turn.
Though Heaven is merciful and has pushed the timeline back,
I fear it cannot extend much longer.
When the storm comes, north and south will be uncertain.
Find your bearings and set your compass.
These little demons will never let go.
They will stir chaos everywhere — where can there be peace?
They bring demonic soldiers and demonic generals,
their mouths open wide, wanting to devour people.
They do not care if you speak kind words of persuasion.
They do not care about your politeness or your dignity.
They do not care what views you hold.
They do not care what reasons you have.
Two roads — they force you to choose.
I truly fear you will be caught in their snares.
They use every method to test you.
No matter how capable you are, you cannot escape.
To speak of it makes my heart tremble with fear.
For my disciples — how pitiable!
And the tests come layer upon layer.
Heaven's design links inside and outside in a chain.
Drawing in all four sides, expanding in every direction —
all coming to carry out the great Final Gathering.
When that scene arrives, it will truly be chaos.
Every cultivator will struggle to bear it.
Truly, all roads will be cut off.
Only one thread of light will pierce through.
Though you may pray for Heaven's grace,
it still depends on your own merit being complete.
The Mother can only warn you early.
I tell you, disciples: prepare yourselves fully.
As long as you have a conscience,
bring forth your sincerity toward Heaven early.
Do not deceive yourselves — bare your hearts and pour out your guts.
Do not pardon yourselves — keep your thoughts strictly guarded.
Hold fast to the true purpose without changing.
Follow the right path, march forward without rest.
Fulfill your duty and become a model.
Lead the junior disciples forward.
Lower your pride and accept loyal counsel.
Do not take any matter lightly.
In your own heart, you must discern even more clearly.
Principle and emotion must not be allowed to mix.
Clench your teeth and sever human attachments.
How many years of true cultivation do you really have?
Purify body and mind — cut desire and passion early.
With lingering attachments, how can you reach completion?
Gather your strength — do not let your spirit scatter.
For the Heavenly Dao, march forward bravely.
Pour out your heart to teach and persuade the junior disciples.
Do not ruin their future connection to the Buddha.
As their model, always maintain vigilance and caution.
Pay close attention to the line between rising and falling.
Your ancestors watch with infinite hope.
But I fear your resolve is not firm.
From the root, truly temper yourselves.
When the foundation is set, it stands firm of its own.
Spread virtue and benevolence, nourishing all living beings.
When the final days come, sail together on the merciful vessel.
When you face the great test, let sincerity move Heaven.
Heaven and humanity united — danger transformed into peace.
If this righteous energy fills you,
how would any evil demon dare come near?
Go and experience this result for yourselves.
Through genuine practice, understanding comes naturally.
The Mother, for her disciples — a heart full of compassion.
Every word from my lungs and guts is the honest truth.
If you are still stubbornly lost and refuse to wake,
how can you avoid falling into the abyss of calamity?
Matters of nature and life — can you take them lightly?
One moment of carelessness drags down your ancestors.
You should make your preparations early.
Urge yourselves on — whip the horse and ride faster.
The good times will not last long.
Wake from the dream of Nanke — delay no more.
Do not play games — take this seriously and attend to it.
Always observe the mechanisms Heaven has set.
Human effort has its limits.
Pray more for the gracious mercy of the Emperor of Heaven.
Silently, there is always a hidden turning.
Perhaps all things may yet be made safe.
Do your human part with caution everywhere.
The Old Emperor of Heaven is without exception compassionate.
Separation and unity — their implications are not shallow.
Only when human hearts are fulfilled can they unite with Heaven.
Right now, put your affairs in order.
Instruct the junior disciples to hold their aspirations firm.
Never fear any test.
Endure the suffering and the hardship through this trial.
When the wind dies down and the sky clears and the clouds scatter —
Teacher and disciples, one bitterness, eternal sweetness.
Only then can it be said that duty was fulfilled.
The great vow accomplished, the fruit ripened, the merit complete.
The Great Reckoning — rewards and punishments distinguished.
Then these bitter years of cultivation were not in vain.
The Mother's heart — disciples, each of you must feel it.
Do not betray these pleas made again and again.
Here I set down the golden brush. What lies in my heart is too much to express in words. Taking my leave, parting from my disciples, I return. Riding auspicious clouds, I withdraw from the Buddha's hall. Withdraws.
Sessions 15–16 (1949) await future translators. Two sessions remain in the March 1949 burst. Session 15 is the next chronological session (March 23, 1949) — Yuehui Bodhisattva returns.
Session Twelve
The Twenty-First Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (March 21, 1949)
Instruction of Ji Gong, the Living Buddha Dàojì of the Southern Screen
Drunk by the lake — a cool breeze passes in waves.
Watching the water flow — my heart drifts far as the Yangtze.
Dreams wind through the gorges of the Three Ravines.
Strike the drum, ring the bell — shake awake the Dreamer of Yellow Millet.
A life has not a hundred years — good scenery passes quickly.
Worry less — do not be deluded.
Nourish your nature, cut off desire — the obstacles to true cultivation break.
Wander at ease — and only then awaken to the joy within.
I, your Teacher of the Southern Screen, the Living Buddha Dàojì, by command arrive in this world of suffering, pay respects to the Holy Carriage, and take up the brush to speak once more. Worthy disciples, be still. Listen carefully — there is much that is wondrous. Ha ha!
The sky is clear, the sun radiant, a gentle breeze blows in waves.
Seizing this lovely hour and fine scenery, I left West Lake behind.
Soaring and roaming, looking up and gazing down, observing Heaven, examining the earth.
Then suddenly, unbidden, my heart was stirred — a wave of grief and sorrow.
Good opportunities are exceedingly rare — they are not to be taken lightly.
Those who cultivate the Dao: can you or can you not seize the moment and practice diligently?
Thinking of you, this lot of disciples — so many still do not understand.
Having met this chance, if you carelessly let it slip — regret will come too late.
In your cultivation, have you truly come to understand Heaven's principle?
If you do not understand it, is this not a waste of this rare encounter?
This final great gathering is by no means an easy thing.
When your Teacher thinks of it, the grief and anguish cannot be held back.
Heaven's mandate and destiny's number, its turning and changing — hard to fathom.
The moment has arrived, and now it is ten times more urgent and pressing.
The age of universal salvation has passed; we are at the final move, the beginning of the great gathering.
Though your Teacher's term of destiny has been fulfilled, I still secretly assist and quietly labor.
Openly the altar is held; in secret the teaching is guided — Heaven and humanity in one body.
All of this has been made possible by the boundless grace of Heaven.
Though there has been great chaos, a thousand tangled threads —
much of it still depended on your Teacher Mother's tireless management.
Destiny ordained that she carry on the great task, spreading salvation with a tireless voice.
Were it not so, this upheaval would have split apart long ago.
She has worked through layer after layer, putting things in order by her own hand.
By now it can be said: the shape of things has grown clear.
It is all your Mother's doing — running here and there, attending to every detail.
Every place, every person — slowly lifted, one by one.
My heart cannot bear to stand aside and let the great matter be delayed.
All of your Teacher's hopes rest upon this very moment.
You disciples can also be said to have made some progress.
In the past, you have all suffered hardship and injustice for the sake of the Dao.
Heaven will surely not fail you — it is guiding you toward readiness.
Take hold of the golden thread, follow the new plan, and set your foundation once more.
You should examine carefully your record of merit and error.
Then bring forward the true hinge upon which your future turns.
You must understand: Heaven has ordained test after test.
All of them serve one purpose — to temper your original nature so it does not stray.
If you can perceive this, carefully sort through, sweep away the wrong, hold fast to the right,
correct your faults, and where there is nothing to correct, press on — that is true heroism.
You cultivated at your ease and things seemed quite stable.
Who would have thought that by now the situation has completely changed?
This whole board will soon undergo a great cleansing.
Heaven's number is fixed: saints and sages will be selected and set in order.
Though you have already repented and know to strive —
how can it be avoided that some remain foolish, dull, and confused?
Vows may be made but not practiced — never made into living reality.
Responsibilities may be taken on but still met with evasion and pretense.
Some are called "advanced" yet stop and rest along the way.
Some are named "leaders" yet have not even completed their own cultivation.
Many students, though brought to completion, never carry through to the end.
In the work of administration, errors of excess and deficiency are hard to avoid.
And there are those whose bad habits only grow worse the longer they practice.
And there are those who treat cultivation ever more lightly the further they go.
All these various conditions — everywhere they inspire dread.
True mixed with false, false mixed with true — the confusion has not cleared.
For this reason a great examination is truly unavoidable.
Heaven, because of its virtue, tests ever more — and with each test comes a higher level.
Time is running short. A clap of Heavenly thunder shakes the sky.
Heaven becomes the crucible, Earth becomes the furnace — spirits are startled, ghosts amazed.
Like cutting and polishing, like carving and grinding — tempering is required.
Only then can your nature become perfectly rounded — the clear preserved, the mud washed away.
Through this process, extraordinary vessels of rare talent can be selected.
Without the slightest flaw or shortcoming — only then is Bodhi attained.
If you are prideful, you must learn to lower your heart and humble your spirit.
If you are self-righteous, you must learn from others.
If you are too loose, you must turn toward discipline and care.
If you are too careless, you must turn toward discernment and precision.
If you have given up on yourself, you must rouse your spirit and strive.
If you are too proud, you must become gentle and humble.
If you are too hasty, you must learn to proceed step by step.
If you are too rigid, you must learn to be flexible and adapt.
Transform foolishness into wisdom — let firmness and softness complement each other.
Transform weakness into strength — shatter the barriers, dispel the fog.
Build up your fire, add to your experience, enrich your learning.
Be able to endure, be able to contain — let nothing be beyond your reach.
All of this is Heaven's vast grace toward you, worthy disciples.
Without the test, how could you reach the foundation of perfection?
You must understand: to put this into practice still depends on yourselves.
If you betray Heaven's compassion, you will lose the opportunity by your own hand.
Discern carefully — you must find the principle that separates right from wrong.
Keep your mind clear, free of confusion — see and know with full clarity.
At this moment, seize your resolve with utter determination.
Then perhaps you will not lose your way again halfway through.
When the time comes and the test descends, feel not the slightest fear.
Hold your position steady — no matter what arises, do not waver.
You must also have real merit and virtue to sustain what follows.
If you truly act with great sincerity, Heaven will surely extend its compassion.
If you are truly like this — burying yourself in the work without ceasing,
your mind clear and bright — then you must not recklessly criticize or judge.
Let your actual cultivation be the measure of Heaven's will.
The future will change layer by layer — within it all, a plan is already set.
One push, one karmic consequence, one kind of change.
Be able to bring forth the right method to meet what comes.
You should cultivate true wisdom and let it rise from deep within.
In action, observe people. In stillness, attune to Heaven. Both contain the wondrous design.
In all affairs, first do your utmost as a human being.
Where there is difficulty, where there is obstruction — gather with utmost sincerity.
Then ask Heaven for greater compassion — transform wrong into right.
What is great, make small. What is wide, make narrow. Set the subtle mechanism in motion.
In human affairs, you cannot merely rely on outside support.
Only when you truly exhaust your own effort does it accord with Heaven — the two become one.
Exert your talent, extend your will — press on and on again.
The great foundation, the true construction — this is the time for it.
Rouse your spirit, devise extraordinary plans — fight for this one breath.
Teacher and disciples as one body — the great matter set in order.
Do not let small disturbances cause you to lose your purpose.
If you can advance, by all means do not stop — carry on from this point.
After this year, you must know: accomplishing the Dao is not easy.
Heaven's number is cut. In a single instant, the great test may arise.
You should know: spirits, humans, and ghosts — all Three Realms are in awe.
Every buddha and sage must pass through this trial.
Great merit, small attainment — all is recorded anew in the White Yang.
Judgment is rendered according to the facts — not the slightest thing missed.
Saints and sages truly distinguished — gathered together at the end.
Three thousand six hundred, forty-eight thousand — all finally selected and set in place.
Your Teacher bears this mandate, turning destiny and joining forces for the final act.
The old becomes young, the great becomes small — coming and going in wondrous ways.
When that time arrives, the three vehicles of profound principle will be truly tested.
Saints, buddhas, immortals — every rank and order set in perfect arrangement.
By Heavenly mandate, one decree — and the True Ancestor appears in the world.
Celebrating the Three Yang, the joining of the Three Origins — three buddhas, a wonder beyond words.
It will not be long before you witness it with your own eyes.
Those who sing, sing. Those who watch, watch. None of this is a trivial matter.
At this time, I first instruct you disciples: prepare yourselves.
In sum, it all comes down to this — hold fast to the master within.
If your heart and will can truly be sincere, upright, steady, and precise,
and in practice not the slightest thread or hair departs from the path —
Be bold in courage, careful in heart — observe the principles of every situation.
Know when to advance, know when to retreat. Know self, know other. Meet destiny with readiness.
Above and below linked together, before and after as one body.
Gather the wisdom of the many, broaden the counsel of all — together investigate the true question.
Accomplish this one thing, fulfill your vows — embody the practice without ceasing.
Repay Heaven's grace and the Ancestor's virtue — align your heart with your Teacher's.
And you will not have failed your Teacher Mother's every worry and care.
Each of you, personally, can hope to attain the fruition of Bodhi.
And lift your nine generations of ancestors to ascend together to the realm of Principle.
Your students in ages to come will look up to your virtue — the incense never broken.
From beginning to end, one thread, one unity — only then is it truly finished.
When this great matter is brought to beautiful completion, the great order is set.
Teacher and disciples will arrive at that place of heads held high and spirits proud.
Singing together, hand in hand — warm and joyful, radiant and at ease.
Gathered to drink at the Dragon Feast — the ten thousand eight thousand at rest.
At that time, what happiness — beyond what words can express.
Your Teacher has nothing else — only the hope that you attend to this present moment.
Follow your Teacher's instruction, embody your Teacher's intent — and it will surely come to its completion.
My words end here. What came before and what comes after — I charge you, disciples, to reflect upon it carefully.
I make no further judgment, take my leave, and withdraw from the altar. The mechanism is closed. Withdraws.
Session Eleven
The Eighteenth Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (March 18, 1949)
Instruction of Zhang the Dharma Lord
In the Peach Garden, heroes gathered — righteous spirit blazing bright.
The serpent-halberd, eighteen feet, shook with divine might.
Right there he roared one thundering shout
and startled back the traitor Cao.
To this day his fair name endures — all mouths sing his praise.
In the Third Period he assists the Dao, establishing laws and discipline.
Solemn and impartial — all revere and fear him.
Take care not to fall short.
I, the Dharma Lord, Lord Huan Hou — Zhang Fei — by command depart the Purple Forbidden enclosure, enter the altar to pay respects, and give instruction once more. Worthy gentlemen, draw near and listen as I expound.
I, Old Zhang, by imperial decree swiftly departed the Heavenly Court,
mounted the dark-dappled steed, descended to the altar, and took up the brush to set down words of instruction.
Speaking now of the Third Period's final kalpa — vast and overwhelming —
open your eyes and look: everywhere, people are fleeing in panic.
Storm clouds of war spread; flood, fire, drought, and deluge arrive all at once,
and still there are plagues, locusts, and the sword of war.
These calamities were brought about entirely by evil and wickedness.
Heaven was enraged and brought down reckoning across the eastern outskirts.
This pack of thugs and strongmen is truly infuriating —
they have blinded their conscience, harmed Heaven's principles, and made a chaotic mess.
All of them are cunning, deceitful, and have thrown the world into disorder.
They have turned their backs on moral bonds, destroyed virtue, and violated Heaven's laws.
Moreover, European winds and American rains have gradually taken hold —
learning "freedom," packs of foxes and gangs of dogs preach what is fashionable.
They have brewed malevolent energy throughout Heaven and Earth, smoke and clouds in turmoil —
it has already become a miasma, a complete mess.
Their sins fill the sky, high as mountains, deep as the sea — how can they be settled?
Heaven is perfectly just, the Buddha's law solemn and strict — it will certainly not forgive.
Only when the kalpa has spread fully and cleansed everything will it be finished.
This Heaven-ordained scouring and winnowing is a great elimination.
Yet among the ordinary people, there are quite a few of good faith and virtue.
Heaven, in its mercy, has specially set out bright lamps leading to the Heavenly Bridge.
Those with affinity will turn around, reach the shore, and seek the Great Dao.
The True Enlightened Teacher appeared in response to the time and destiny to manage the Final Act.
Those who can reform and renew themselves daily will naturally awaken to the wondrous Dao,
and they will be able to escape this final kalpa and flee disaster.
Having received guidance, press forward in cultivation and fulfill your vows.
Pay attention: strictly observe the Buddha's rules and accord with Heaven's laws.
I, Old Zhang, have skillful methods for the final gathering and completion.
The Heavenly Mandate is in my hands — I wield the law to assist the Final Act.
All who cultivate the Dao must understand: progress comes layer by layer.
Respect truth — the slightest deviation will not be forgiven.
Follow the rules, abide in cultivation, and gradually enter the wondrous.
Let your true intention remain constant from beginning to end, without wavering.
Examine every word and deed with careful attention.
Since you cultivate the Dao, you should serve as a model for ordinary people.
Now let me speak of those who lead in cultivation.
Their responsibility is heavy — how can they take it lightly or be unsteady?
As exemplars, how can they let their words and deeds stray from the path?
Your every movement and every stillness carries great consequence.
In a single thought, you must distinguish between Heavenly principle and human sentiment.
An error of a thousand miles begins with a deviation of a hair's breadth.
Be most careful — as if walking at the edge of an abyss, treading on thin ice — do not be heedless.
If you are careless, beware: you will create faults and violate Heaven's laws.
I, Old Zhang, am specially tasked with monitoring what is not proper.
Among cultivators, there are inevitably some who are unworthy:
putting on appearances, managing everything to please both sides —
not caring that in secret, Heavenly principle sees and observes all things clearly.
Some publicly comply while secretly defying — playing clever tricks.
Some know the truth but do not practice it, stubbornly clinging.
Some are slanderous and sycophantic, performing for appearances.
Some deceive others and deceive themselves, making confused excuses.
Some flaunt their talents and are arrogant.
Some are self-important, self-indulgent, and puffed up with pride.
Some made great vows but will not advance to fulfill them.
Some give up halfway and lose sight of the goal.
Worse still, some deceive their teacher, destroy the ancestors, and look down on those who came before.
Worse still, some are greedy, harboring delusions, making a complete mess.
Worse still, some recklessly fabricate heavenly secrets and mislead the virtuous and filial.
Worse still, some curse their teacher and ride over Heaven — their flames of sin burning high.
This crowd of false cultivators and sham practitioners, riding the excitement —
slowly, I will show you my authority. Just wait and see.
Heaven has already determined: when the thunder drums roll, the cannons will fire,
and I will brandish my eighteen-foot serpent-halberd.
I will absolutely not tolerate those who fill the ranks without merit and stir up trouble.
Even less will I tolerate those who twist right and wrong and shake the Dao.
I will use every means to eliminate them all.
The law is without sentiment — not a single one will be lightly forgiven.
Pay attention: the further you cultivate, the harder and more painful it becomes.
Before long, when Heaven's net and Earth's web close in — who can escape?
Cultivators will all face this examination together.
At that time I will display my might — spirits and ghosts will wail.
When the examination begins, deviant sects and side paths will all come to disturb you.
You think your cultivation is high? They will try to surpass you.
At that time, let the hordes of demons come to confuse and disturb —
the great objective is to distinguish true from false, real from empty.
If your karmic debts and enmities are not yet settled,
it will be impossible for the demons to spare your life.
I, Old Zhang, though I have the dharma-treasures that subdue demons,
cannot refuse to let karmic debts be collected.
At that time, with merit lacking and virtue thin, you will truly regret —
and I, Old Zhang, will have no way to help. I can only watch.
Better to listen to my good words and understand clearly now.
At this time, build up great merit as early as you can.
While the heavenly timing still offers many fortunate opportunities,
prepare early, pursue, advance — lift your feet and move.
The road ahead is bright and upright — run freely upon it,
but be careful whether there are traps and barbed spears.
Be prudent — careful, cautious — this is of utmost importance.
I urge you: observe the movements of heavenly timing and set your course.
At present, all directions are being set in order, entering the proper track.
It all depends on everyone — above and below, before and behind — uniting firmly.
Becoming one body, the concentrated strength will be considerable.
Accomplish great things: raise your spirits and look forward.
The Dao requires you to lower your heart and humble your spirit, following the example of sages before you.
In learning and practice, in every situation, apply your heart diligently.
Cultivate the self, rectify the heart, make your intentions sincere — these are the essentials.
If the root is not clear, the branch streams will certainly be muddied.
From the beginning, find the correct steps without deviation.
With proper sequence, advance gradually and reach the goal.
Only by first rectifying yourself can you achieve swift results in guiding others.
Give your whole heart, speak directly without concealment, to those who learn after you.
Spend earnest words, impartially and selflessly, advising and instructing.
Keep a grandmother's heart, patiently guiding with kindness — this builds merit.
Like polishing jade, like cutting and grinding — examine and review.
Let harmonious energy pervade: no self, no other, no high, no low.
Embody Heaven's heart: without bias, without leaning, sweep the heart clean.
In human relations, even more: deal with the world without attachment.
With sincerity in the heart, become one — repaying Heaven's grace.
With genuine expression, in the end you will move Heaven's mercy to shine.
Once merit is established, in days to come there will surely be great glory.
Transcending distant ancestors, together bathed in radiance, reaching the Jade Palace.
The work of the Final Gathering, in accord with destiny — the Three Buddhas will complete it well.
Together reunited, reaching the root, returning to the origin, ascending to the Heavenly Realm of Principle.
At the Dragon-Flower Assembly, the Three Heavens celebrate together — joy overflowing,
drinking jade nectar, together rushing to the grand feast, eating the peaches of immortality.
When the True One appears and issues one command, ten thousand Buddhas arrive.
The Dao spreads universally; all nations revere and honor the Central Kingdom.
At that time, it will truly be the supreme great joy and laughter.
It still depends on you: seize these good words and build merit.
What I hope for: put it into practice with your body — do not let it be empty and vague.
Mind your words and deeds, and you can establish yourself as a hero.
Do not abandon yourself in despair — rouse yourself with fierce courage and run toward the future.
Follow these good words, comprehend them with your heart, and become a worthy colleague.
Understand this: the workings of Heaven shift with utmost subtlety.
Before long, a single thread of clarity will pierce through the clouds to the sky.
You should quietly contemplate, interpreting and understanding at every moment.
Only by acting virtuously can you set the great objective.
You must never know the truth and then let it become empty and vague,
lest in time you invite transgression and violate the law.
Everyone knows that I, Zhang, was born with a fierce temper —
if things come to this, know that punishment will show no mercy.
Be most careful — it is not that I, Zhang, have lost my measured tone.
If you violate the law, I have methods to show you.
Do not treat this as child's play — these words must be strictly heeded.
If you truly comply, I, Zhang, will help you build merit.
Accomplishing great things and fulfilling your duties — all of it is for your own good.
Only when Heaven and humanity unite, when spirit and person become one body, will things be firm.
Carefully study the general meaning of this entire piece as a reference.
I, Old Zhang, have not come here merely to grumble.
Speaking true feelings, everything I say is in a loyal and honest register.
I do not know how to twist and turn with clever flourishes.
A straight-hearted person naturally speaks straight words of guidance.
I hope you worthy gentlemen will also press straight ahead in your learning.
Today I cease writing — there is still more that these words cannot fully express.
I take my leave, mount the dark-dappled steed, and ascend to the clouds. Ha ha! Withdraws.
Session Thirteen
The Twenty-Second Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (March 22, 1949)
Teaching of the Three-Heaven Examiner (三天主考), Maotian (茂田)
Maotian loves to tell jokes.
There was a group of blind men riding blind horses.
They ran into a group of deaf men fighting wildly.
And there was a group of mutes
gesturing with hands and feet.
They came up with a grand plan —
the details were quite complicated.
This was getting out of hand,
so they hired a fool
to think of a solution.
But he just rambled and hemmed and hawed —
his answers missed the questions, his questions missed the answers.
Right at that moment,
along came a cripple
who opened his mouth and started cursing:
"What's the big deal about all this?
Why all the blocking and parrying?
No need to fear what's ahead or what's behind,
worrying left and right.
Just keep your heart big, your capacity big, your burden big —
what is there to fret about?"
"Forget it — no need for more talk.
I'm also a bit of a simpleton,
and I felt sorry for them, so I went to break up the fight.
No need to force it.
No need for tricks and cunning,
cheating each other back and forth.
Don't be like the old man who fell among pigs —
always looking at others
but never looking at himself."
Listen to me — I'll give you a good solution.
Ha ha! What solution? I haven't even given my answer yet!
The Eternal Mother sends a decree from on high —
and the truth is, I still don't know what to say. Ha ha!
I am that Mr. Dumb Father, little fool Maotian, by command descended to the altar. I bow to the Old Mother. Brothers — are you well this morning? Spirits high? Let us talk heart-to-heart. Can you think of a solution for me, so I have something to tell people? This is really nothing much — it all comes down to trust. The meaning is just so. Let us go slowly, look back, skip the small talk, and speak the truth. Turn the planchette, push the sand. What fun! Onward, slowly. Ha ha!
The red sun rises in the east — ten thousand rays of light.
Brilliant, shining to the ends of the earth,
falling on a quiet homestead by the mountains and the water.
A hedge runs all around.
Mulberry planted in front, hemp in back.
A small bridge, flowing water, ducks set loose to swim.
The golden rooster crows at dawn — the spirit quickens.
Some go to gather firewood, some to pick tea — all is clean and undisturbed.
In idle moments, wandering down the hillside.
Gazing up at the clouds and the sunset glow from the ravine,
looking down at the stream that slowly pushes sand.
Singing aloud to the valley's echo, or chanting the Rainbow Skirt and strumming the lute.
Meeting a kindred friend — pure of heart, few in desires — playing music together.
Casting aside — casting aside all the world's idle passions.
Whether the sky is clear or clouded, never mind.
Wind and cloud, order and chaos — let them take their turns.
Never mind.
Let the White Tiger slay the Green Rabbit. Let the Golden Dragon battle the Twin Serpents.
Let the river flow while the sun does not turn. Let rise and fall tangle like hemp.
Nourish your innate goodness. Open yourself to creation's design.
Come home to the thatched cottage.
Sunlight falls through the window gauze.
Open the old scriptures and the ancient classics.
Sit face to face with the ancients and talk heart-to-heart.
The savour of the text deepens with each reading.
In leisure, sip clear wine. Without desire, pour yourself tea.
Or set up the chessboard. Or take up the treasured sword.
Drifting freely — easy and unbound.
All things are like the morning dew. The world's affairs are like the passing clouds.
A body unstained — what is there to worry about?
Realize the wondrous workings of Heaven and Earth.
Watch the green forests and the shaded groves — ten thousand creatures struggling.
See the wild bees and the dancing butterflies weaving through the flowers.
Listen to the beautiful songs rising and falling — birds calling in chorus.
Swallows flying back and forth beneath the eaves,
keeping watch with you over this old home.
Look up — the wild geese fly in formation.
Letter after letter, sent to all the kindred spirits under heaven:
why not come home early?
Do not envy those who are noble as lords and rich in glory.
Do not admire those with tall carriages and four-horse teams, enjoying fine things.
Just laugh at the fools who are busy all day — for nothing but a little more food and clothing.
If you can eat plain rice when hungry, drink clear tea when thirsty —
no honor, no disgrace, no attachments —
what is there to rush about, what is there to fret?
Cast off the bridle of fame and the net of profit, the lock of love and the shackle of passion.
Nothing to covet. Follow what comes.
In lively moments, awaken to the wondrous Lotus.
Gather your heart and let it dwell within.
Tame the monkey of the mind. Train the horse of intention.
Within — no scheming disorder. Without — no noisy disturbance.
Keep your place, study the wonder of the Dao, realize the Dharma.
Nourish your essence and vital energy.
Do not squander them recklessly.
Time must be cherished — do not let it drift like fallen petals on running water.
Penetrate that single point of vast and noble spirit — and you will truly see that all the world's paths are illusion.
Do not wait until Heaven's mechanism darkens and the evening sun sinks low.
Begin your practice early. Lay the foundation early.
The hero strikes when the moment demands it.
How long can a hidden instrument stay concealed?
Soon the thunder of Heaven will rumble again and again — the Buddha's decree comes down.
Then you must stand forth, strong and mighty, revealing your true brilliance.
At this hour, know that everything is at stake.
Can you not watch carefully through this surge of waves?
If you slip — one slip means eternal regret, and you become a pitiful child.
The dark mountain rises ten thousand feet — how will you ever climb back up?
Would regret not come too late?
The anguish — as if ten thousand knives scraping —
how painful, how unbearable.
I earnestly hope you will all be wise and far-sighted.
Set your goal early.
In these extraordinary times, all things are guided by Heaven's will.
The boundless wondrous Dharma — how could human effort alone fathom it?
You must examine yourselves and leave no room for error.
Follow Heaven and you will flourish — hope will be great, blessings will increase.
Unite together, take hands, advance as one — keep in step.
When you meet demonic trials, do not fear.
Hold to righteous energy and subdue all evil.
Drive out the spectres and the wayward spirits.
Gods and ghosts alike will tremble.
Sun and moon will share their brightness. Heaven and Earth will lend their creative power.
Great suffering, great trials — experience grows.
In the end, present your testimony to the Eternal Mother.
When the time comes, bring it forth.
What glory! What cause for celebration!
You will attain the lotus seat of the highest rank.
Your ancestors of generations past will naturally arrive.
You will stand shoulder to shoulder with the immortals and buddhas,
ride alongside the sages and worthies.
The incense of your name will endure through the ten thousand eight thousand years.
Your virtue will be honored, your merit vast.
Is this not perfection? Is this not beauty?
But what should be done right now?
Never again push and pull and stall.
In the swift current, bravely withdraw — quickly set things in order, without confusion.
Slowly verify the past.
Carefully trace the future.
No matter how large or small, give your full heart. No person excluded, no moment of slack.
This is what it means to act on Heaven's behalf and transmit the Teacher's Dharma.
Do not betray the vast grace.
Everywhere, at all times, think of repaying it.
Feel the concern in the Merciful Mother's heart.
All her toil, all her care —
toward her disciples, nothing is overlooked, nothing unexamined.
Watch your footing, stand firm. Be careful of the changes ahead.
Do not let the golden thread break again. Do not let the root of the altar go astray.
Whatever turns may come, do not grow idle.
Adapt to the moment, exercise wisdom, know the times — exhaust human effort, seek Heaven's aid, and you will arrive.
Grace is vast. The great matter has already been held back.
Were it not so, everything would have overturned long ago.
Flood-dragons rising from flat ground, struggling and seizing in chaos —
no way to manage it, no handle to grasp.
Would that not be one mistake spreading to all?
In this fleeting span of time, act quickly.
Take hold of your compass. Do not be cunning.
One honest conscience, nothing false —
only then can you face the Eternal Mother without shame.
Do not betray the Merciful Mother's care. Do not betray those who raised you up.
In the end there will be fruit — Heaven's light, the sun's warmth, the air of goodness.
Brothers gathered, bowing to the Merciful Mother.
Clapping hands, playing together.
The Old One's face breaks into a smile.
Heads held high, spirits soaring — shaking all of China.
The great work finished, steadily returning to the ancient home.
Celebrating the True Ancestor — the ten thousand eight thousand yield and seek the true Dharma.
One principle that nourishes all under heaven.
It is absolutely not false.
The proof is already in your hands.
Do not be anxious — the day will naturally come.
And when that day arrives — ten thousand things will flourish.
Truly increasing.
The blind — not really blind. The deaf — not really deaf. The mute, speaking just the same.
You call him a fool? He is no fool.
Beyond all expectation — spirits and ghosts are astonished.
Wind and rain — naturally smooth, drifting free.
Sun and moon — shining through without obstruction.
Brothers — no attachments, no ties.
Perfect awakening, bodhi, turning the Lotus Dharma.
Let us all look up to heaven and laugh — ha ha ha!
Two hands point — and there in the center, the Buddha-flower blooms.
Our duty done, our debt of grace repaid — joy without limit.
The Land of Ultimate Bliss — only that is true magnificence. Ha ha!
This whole piece was heartfelt talk —
cool and refreshing, let it pour out freely.
Suddenly pulling east, then pulling west.
The meaning was not much, but the pleasure was considerable.
Still — it is the same solution as before: examine early.
Brothers, take it to heart. I will say no more — my words have lost their order.
My eyes are a bit blurry. My head is big. My heart is tangled.
Well then, well then.
I take my leave, bow to the Heavenly Carriage. Brothers, farewell — I step down from the altar.
My dharma body soars through the sky to the ends of heaven. Ha ha! Withdraws.
Session Fourteen
The Twenty-Second Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (March 22, 1949)
Instruction of Tianran Ancient Buddha
New sorrows and old grievances lock both brows.
Touching the present, thinking of the past — grief deepens.
Above, wind and cloud are ever-changing.
Below, order and chaos are hard to fully fathom.
The good days will not last long — cherish them.
The great roc's journey is vast — begin your cultivation early.
Do not make the merciful heart spend itself a thousand ways.
If you do not return now, when will you return?
I am Tianran Ancient Buddha, your Teacher of the Celestial Elder Bow, by imperial decree descended to the Buddha's hall. I bow to the Carriage. Worthy disciples, draw near and be at ease. I take up the planchette once more and set forth my words. Ha ha!
Spring wind, spring scenery — the last days of spring.
Clouds thin, the sun dim — grief and sorrow deepen.
Songbirds call without cease — the merciful heart is moved.
Touching the scene, feeling arises — remembering years past.
Everything that has passed is like a dream.
To think of it — can the heart not ache?
The great matter of the final days — how has it ever been settled?
Where Heaven's mandate falls, who can move it?
The Great Gathering ahead is still hard to accomplish.
Left behind: a crowd of disciples, scattered like sand on a board.
Already there has been one great upheaval,
and the heroes who remain are far too few.
Heaven sets its wondrous strategy — who can comprehend it?
Much less if you have set it aside without careful reflection.
Too many of your foundations are not yet firm.
Look at what happened in the last round and you will see.
Were it not for Heaven's infinite compassion and mercy,
the ignorant would long ago have fallen to the demons' gate.
Lost on the wrong path — how would you ever return?
Fortunately, you have your Mother's abounding pity.
She knows clearly that Heaven has already set its proofs.
Without great virtue, the task cannot be borne.
Disciples rise and fall — jade and stone are mixed together.
Running everywhere to set things right, spending all her effort.
It is worse than anything that came before.
Where has she not given of herself to bring things to completion?
Though your Teacher's term is fulfilled, his heart cannot let go.
Without your Mother, how could anything be at peace?
All of this was destined by Heaven.
As they say: the sun and the moon must take turns bearing the load.
The open board and the hidden design — both verified against each other.
For your Teacher, the affairs ahead are still many.
A round of change will bring its winnowing.
How can the good and the worthless stay mixed together forever?
At present, the work of the Dao is gradually coming into order.
All that bitter effort was spent for the sake of worthy disciples.
From now on, everything will be different.
Regroup the banners and drums — make new preparations.
Together, assist Yuehui through the remaining years.
The Final Act begins from here.
The Great Gathering still lies ahead.
All is determined by Heaven's sovereign authority.
Do not give rise to worry and anxiety for nothing.
Though dangerous storms cannot be avoided,
what faces you now is but a small ripple.
On the whole, there is no cause for alarm — you should press forward.
How could you know how boundless Heaven's grace already is?
There is still a window in which things can be advanced.
But how long before the board is set?
You should know: the Great Examination should have descended long ago.
But the facts on the ground are not yet complete.
I fear for my disciples when they enter the furnace —
the fire's heat, fierce or gentle, is not the same for everyone.
If they must pass through another great storm,
more will fall than succeed — how pitiful.
Ten thousand buddhas and a thousand sages held compassion in their hearts.
Together they knelt before the throne and pleaded in every way.
Only then did they receive the grace to extend the timeline.
The pivot of all this is hard to put into words.
Know this: the window is fleeting.
I earnestly hope my disciples will seize it early.
Truly build real practice and cultivation.
If the foundation is not settled, how can there be peace?
Hold firm to your own judgment, settle your will.
The two paths of merit and fault — do not deceive yourselves.
The golden thread has been reconnected — do not let it break again.
Guard against it — be careful not to misstep on the board again.
Before long you will encounter the silver screen unfurling.
The great drama calls you to watch the spectacle.
If you as an individual have no real handle to hold,
the slightest failure of vision will ruin you entirely.
One slip and the fall is forever — enough to make the heart tremble.
The most subtle thought divides heaven from the abyss.
This is the final juncture.
Make your preparations this year.
Moreover, it is destined that your Mother will withdraw.
When that time comes, what will your compass be?
If you do not discern clearly now,
pulling back at the cliff's edge will be in vain.
Each person should tremble with reverence.
Moreover, all of you carry heavy responsibilities.
Lives upon lives rest on your two shoulders.
To err and lead others astray — the sin fills heaven.
Walking at the abyss, treading on thin ice — hold this thought always.
How can you afford the slightest self-indulgence?
The root of fortune and disaster is self-sown.
The consequences of your every action and stillness are truly boundless.
I deeply hope that right now you will reflect and understand.
Do not waste your Teacher's broken heart.
A single thread of vitality remains — press forward still.
Heaven grants this dawn in this window of time.
Proceed with caution and set things in careful order.
Let constancy and sincerity run through everything from beginning to end.
Look up to heaven, look down to earth — let your conscience be clean.
Bring forth your true conscience — it can be made whole.
Repent of the past — re-examine carefully.
Resolve that from now on you will not be idle for a moment.
Comprehend Heaven, accord with humanity, adapt to changing circumstances.
Everywhere, the wondrous mechanism is hidden.
Put your heart and spirit into it and you can comprehend.
Only then will there be a good response that brings things to completion.
Once the upheaval comes — clouds and thunder shaking —
all things will change in an instant.
Do not abandon the faint glow of the starting point.
Follow the order without confusion and you can rest secure.
But have you fulfilled your great vow?
Where in your heart do you still fall short before Heaven?
You cannot allow yourself to fall back into confusion after having declared your resolve.
You must know: Heaven's time will not be generous.
In the end, the solemn majesty will be revealed.
At this moment of caution — can anything be hidden?
Do not covet merit and bring on more faults.
Fulfill your duty without slacking and the heart will be at peace.
If there is reckless and arbitrary action,
it will stir up trouble and bring blame, and in the end you will destroy yourself.
Do not fall even slightly short of your responsibility.
To divide into "you" and "me" is even less the way of the wise.
Dissolve the boundaries and limits between self and other.
Set aside factions and partisan doors.
Let great impartiality and selflessness run through all as one body.
Only then will Heaven's heart be comforted and your Teacher's heart be at peace.
In the future, when Heaven's furnace and Earth's crucible are set,
all who carry selfish desires will be left broken.
Through that tempering, the clear and the turbid will be distinguished.
There will be no partiality or bias mixed in.
The result will answer the great selection.
Stripped of ignorance, the loyal and the wise will appear.
The numbers of saints and sages: three-six, four-eight —
only then can they all be gathered and complete.
The matter is no small thing — ten thousand buddhas assist.
In all three realms, at this moment, all is at peace.
We wait only for Maitreya, the True Ancestor, to appear.
Together we will celebrate the meeting of the Three Buddhas and the Three Primes.
At that time, teacher and disciples will meet again.
All bitterness spent, sweetness comes — the great reunion.
For now, I cannot reveal it plainly.
Those who know should not speak lightly.
Heaven has regulations layer upon layer.
This is precisely the board of three-six and two-eight.
Everything in the past has been verified one by one.
The future need not be spoken of falsely.
Do not constrain yourself to seeing with worldly eyes.
Unfold your wisdom early and investigate with your whole being.
The consequences of failing to examine are grave.
One person's rise or fall involves many others.
Now is the time to calm your energy and examine carefully.
Decide what to do and what to stop — do not delay in error.
Tighten when tightening is needed, loosen when loosening is needed.
Follow Heaven in your actions and avoid taking on excess burden.
As for outward appearances and forms,
there is no need for imposing solemnity.
Be clean and simple, seek order and agility.
Neither rigid nor clinging — flexible and complete.
Let loose and tight, fast and slow, become unified.
Let all minds plan together, all strength advance together.
Do not alternate between organizing and scattering.
Break the whole into parts — let the work stay connected.
Adapt to change without losing the normal way.
What should be done, do it — follow nature.
Right and wrong, long and short — do not ask about them now.
In the end there will come a day of great sorting.
The affairs of Heaven and humanity are linked together.
If there is a gap between them, how can anything be complete?
All of this is preparation.
When all hands are ready, the bow will be drawn.
From the subtlest sign, the larger design can be inferred.
In the small, the great matter can be seen.
Every minute movement is tightly connected.
Careful thought will naturally reveal the true compass.
If you truly advance and work in this manner,
Heaven's handle has long since been made firm for you.
Let there be a thousand changes and ten thousand changes —
in the end, Heaven's mandate prevails over brute force.
Do not fear, do not dread — be open and honest early on.
When the heart is still and the nature is at peace, all affairs reach completion.
Let your spirit and your sense of righteousness become one body.
The time is not far off — the Great Gathering comes.
Each one attending to their duty is what matters most.
The slightest profanity, Heaven will not forgive.
Pacify and follow through in every direction.
One root, ten thousand branches — without disorder or confusion.
Advancing steadily one after another, all threads connected.
What is there to fear from demonic winds turning everything upside down?
Set your formations with thoroughness and care.
When the moment comes, adjustments can still be made.
In short: what comes along, accept it accordingly.
As it begins, so it ends.
A wave of upheaval will reveal what is bright and what is dark.
True and false will inevitably no longer be mixed.
Ten thousand dharmas return to the One — this is absolutely not false.
Righteous energy, undaunted, subdues all that is crooked.
Recovery and return — all obey the decree.
One command settles all three boards.
The final great authority is worn by gods and humans alike.
The world at peace, the Dao flowing, Principle alone is solemn.
Naturally, far and near alike will bow in homage.
All will celebrate the year of Great Harmony in the manner of Yao.
When duty is fulfilled and the work done, Heaven's virtue repays all.
Only then will teacher and disciples reach their compass.
From first to last — it is all within yourselves.
Your Teacher's instruction touches upon everything.
In short: do not be blind and ignorant any longer.
Hurry forward — even then you may fear falling behind.
Prepare before the rain — plan quickly.
Do not betray your Teacher's heart a second or third time.
A thousand urgings, ten thousand calls —
all for nothing other than the good of each worthy disciple.
All people have feeling — you should awaken on your own.
Do not add again to your Teacher's sorrow.
Only true practice in action can bring comfort.
And you will not betray the compassion of your Teacher Mother.
Your Teacher's feeling is without end.
The main meaning — I still hope my disciples will follow and reflect.
I set this down and will not write further. To write more and still not be heeded — the sorrow only deepens. I bow and take my leave of God on High, withdrawing from the altar. Parting from my disciples, I return to the Pure and Silent Heaven. Withdraws.
Session Fifteen
The Twenty-Third Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (March 23, 1949)
Descended Teaching of Yuehui Bodhisattva
It wears out the compassionate heart
and shatters the mind with care —
all for the sake of the foolish and confused,
laboring spirit to the last.
Only because the times are changing fast —
how fearful! — worrying that her disciples have no compass.
The golden thread, faint as it is — if it breaks again,
how lamentable! One slip, and the regret runs deep.
While there is time, heed your Mother's teaching well.
Be careful! Can you not practice what you know and repay Heaven's grace?
I, your Teacher Mother, Yuehui Bodhisattva, by command have come to the altar. I bow to the Old Mother. Worthy disciples, quiet your hearts. I take up the planchette and inscribe this teaching.
Your Teacher Mother takes up the planchette and sets down good words.
For her disciples she urges and presses — again and again and again.
Through the nights she wears herself out with anxious thought, her compassionate heart torn to pieces.
And still she does not spare a thousand, ten thousand words, speaking of every kind of thing.
Recalling the past — how can one help but double one's sorrow?
Through one trial after another, one snare after another —
Old Heaven has laid down test upon test, layer upon layer.
After each round — truly, how many have fallen.
Those who sincerely advance, who truly show themselves — they are still too few to see.
And once you enter cultivation, it is not easy to escape this board.
Each of you disciples has, more or less, some experience —
but the true fire, the true tempering — how hard it is to bring them to fullness.
In the past, the great storms came as the fixed numbers were tested.
Three great examinations were planned, one after another.
And at the end — it can truly be called a scene of total confusion.
One might say: everywhere you look, scattered sand.
Heaven's number is: it should be this way — turning and changing in order.
Among all of them, how many kept their compass through it all?
When the wind blew wild, how could anyone find a fixed starting point?
And so the great majority were tested and fell, unable to find peace.
Your Mother, though she saw it coming and urged and pleaded again and again —
what could be done when, at the critical moment, your resolve was not firm?
You lost your bearings, your foundation shifted, the golden thread was lost.
There was a beginning but no end — the fruit of the Dao could not ripen.
And how much more so when every one of you carries a responsibility that is no small thing.
Your Mother had no choice but to plead again with Heaven for compassion,
and by Heaven's mandate was permitted to come in person and give guidance —
to lead you back to the right road, reconnect you, and set you upon the board once more.
This turning point has now divided into two paths:
principle and sentiment, public and private — not a hair's breadth of mixing allowed.
It depends entirely on your own foundation, your ancestral virtue — its depth or shallowness.
It depends on the merit and virtue you have accumulated — whether it is stable and firm.
Since you have received grace, followed your Mother's teaching, and repented with effort —
if not for Heaven's great pardon, how could this have happened by chance?
And yet there are still those who cling stubbornly, making no progress.
After another stretch of time, there will be another turning.
The disciples — their faces cannot become one.
The affairs in every direction are not yet unified — your Mother's heart hangs heavier still.
Each time she considers the great matter of Heaven, it is truly hard to manage.
The final act has already begun — preparations for the Great Gathering.
The mandate of Heaven is here — your Mother cannot disobey or defer.
Toward you disciples, the weight of responsibility makes her heart bind even tighter.
And beyond this, the Three Realms must all be settled and accounted for.
Truly, it has used up an immeasurable amount of heart and liver.
She relies greatly on all the buddhas and patriarchs working together.
And she still hopes that good disciples will exert themselves and shoulder the burden.
Your Mother, therefore, does not shrink from hardship — she personally selects and raises,
tidying up the affairs of every direction, setting order step by step.
By now, though the arrangement can be called somewhat better,
it still depends on the disciples to carry through and bring it to completion.
Among those in position, the wheat and the chaff must be tested.
Picking and choosing, using and discarding — it all emerges naturally.
Do not look at someone unimpressive and think no great work can be done through them.
Do not look at someone clever and think they can certainly bear the responsibility.
Heaven tests in darkness, humans verify in the open — the two are linked.
Those whose number has come must all pass through this.
By now the times are urgent — there is no more slowing down.
And yet some disciples have fallen again into laxity.
Those who truly, from beginning to end, repent without ceasing,
who hold to sincerity, who are careful in all things — they can truly be called rare.
And still others go through the motions — false appearances and empty faces.
And still others waste their days — reckless, superficial, stubborn.
And still others are simply foolish in their sincerity — never discerning clearly.
And still others bury their heads — never looking ahead or behind.
And still others stir up trouble — competing, arguing over who is greater or lesser.
And still others stumble themselves — and drag their students down with them.
This situation — how can your Mother not sigh ten thousand sighs?
You are treating the great matter as something trivial.
To make a child's game of Heaven's work — what kind of offense is that?
You should long ago have taken warning — Heaven does not forgive lightly.
Whoever truly commits acts of betraying the Teacher,
or belittling the patriarchs, insulting those who came before — all manner of such things:
know this — it will not be long before the five thunders appear.
One crack, and the punishment strikes — this is not spoken lightly.
This fixed number cannot be avoided — it must finally be made real.
If you are careless now, can you not feel the chill?
Heed your Mother's teaching quickly — prepare with urgency.
True cultivation, hard effort — how many days do you really have?
You must know that the times grow tighter and more changeable.
At the very most, there is only this remaining year.
And there will still be another great test sent down from Heaven —
not distinguishing inside from outside — both will come entangled together.
Fortunately, ten thousand buddhas knelt and pleaded for more time —
but I fear it cannot be long before it becomes apparent.
Each of you disciples — hold tight to this one ray of dawn.
Quickly make a true showing, to repay Heaven above.
You must be able to bring your true conscience out for all to see.
Look up to Heaven, look down to Earth — and feel no shame in your heart.
Hold fast and firm to what your Mother has compassionately taught, again and again.
You must truly, each of you, take this to heart and advance as one.
You must truly cut through passion and desire in a single stroke.
You must truly know what is weighty and what is light — distinguishing the sacred from the common.
This does not mean abandoning human bonds and ignoring human feeling —
but you must understand: loyalty and filial piety cannot both be served at once.
If there are entanglements, if there are attachments, if the dust of the world still stains you —
then think: can you really complete the Dao and bring your merit full circle?
If it were truly that easy, the way would have been crowded long ago.
The more you truly cultivate, the harder it will certainly become.
And you still carry heavy responsibilities that cannot be loosened.
One single heart, running through from first to last — only then can it come full.
In your proper duty, what should be done must truly be done.
Toward your responsibilities, if there is not the slightest deficiency — that is a worthy disciple.
Your students, above and below — forge them into one body.
Unite into a great force — what hardship is there to fear?
Even if the storm arises, you will have a settled position.
Hearts the same, wills aligned — repelling all that is crooked.
At this time, prepare well and proceed with composure.
Otherwise you will find your hands too late to act and your plans too late to complete.
When the boat reaches the middle of the river, it is too late to patch the leak.
Sharpening the spear at the moment of battle — is that not futile?
Better to have your own reckoning ready early.
From the root, do not be careless — investigate with fine attention.
Remember also to compare and examine one another.
When the wind shifts, turn the rudder quickly — be flexible and resourceful.
At this time, while things still allow you to advance and work —
do not delay even a moment, do not waste even a breath.
It is nothing more than making the large small, turning the whole into pieces —
scattered and then gathered, gathered and then scattered — moving according to what the situation demands.
Simplify procedure, shorten time — do not be slow to act.
With clarity, recognize great ability — do not confuse the wise with the foolish.
If you truly want one person's strength to exceed ten thousand —
seek swift results, and your steps will not fall into chaos.
If you see a small disturbance, do not hesitate to observe the change.
Whether urgent or slow — find the settled center.
In human affairs, do your utmost not to let gaps appear.
Gather all sincerity, plead with Heaven — turn danger into peace.
Grasp the true plumb line and advance with vigor.
In your bearing, maintain caution — at all times, always.
If it truly comes to the great test and everything changes,
Heaven will surely give signs in advance and reveal everything fully.
Let all disciples take careful heed and examine themselves.
In practical affairs, when the time comes to pause — do not disobey Heaven.
As long as you keep the sincere thought running through without change,
your true conscience bright and shining forever — it will move Heaven above.
Then, with this, Heaven and humanity both can advance together.
And your students too, by this alone, will be steady and at peace.
But if, when the wind rises, people panic and horses scatter —
your wavering will drag down lives beyond counting.
Is that not one person's foolishness bringing ruin to ten thousand?
Think on this constantly — it is truly like walking on ice, standing at the cliff's edge.
This future, though shown directly to you, has not yet fully appeared.
With worldly eyes, how can you distinguish what flows with Heaven from what runs against it?
In those days, true and false will be mixed, the paths crooked and unknown.
Even the road of light will darken for a time.
And so the side-doors will have their moment of appearing.
Without these strange doctrines emerging, how could the foolish and the wise be told apart?
At that time, the threads of confusion will number in the thousands upon ten thousands.
What plan can find the pure and upright among them?
And moreover, your Mother in all matters follows Heaven's judgment.
She must, for a time, go into hiding — steadying the fishing boat in silence.
This is not abandoning responsibility or letting go —
what must be purified, what must be sifted — all of it is Heaven's to decide.
This world too will reach its final great upheaval.
Heaven forms the image, Earth forms the shape — and the two face the board of the Dao.
Chaos will turn to order, darkness will turn to light — teacher and disciples will meet again.
It will be like the sky about to dawn — first comes the deepest darkness.
Each of you disciples — you must see clearly and discern with all your might.
A single thought can carry consequences beyond measure.
Be careful, do not be careless — learn from this, strive harder.
Think — what is your Mother doing all of this for?
In the end, it is one word: her disciples, and nothing else.
She is not made of grass or wood — can a person with a heart not understand?
She has worn herself out — three times, four times, urging and pleading in every way.
Whether you listen or not — each of you must bear the consequence yourself.
Those who are your Mother's good disciples will follow and obey.
At the very end, the sky will clear and the sun will shine on a blue heaven.
The Eternal Mother, when that time comes, will reveal her hand.
Teacher and disciples, mother and children — hearts connected, feelings bound together.
Remember these words — plan and reckon early.
Do not make your Mother raise her sorrows once again.
Here I set down the brush and will not write further.
To say more and have it treated as a child's game — only adds to the heartache.
I take my leave of the Sovereign, part from my worthy disciples, and withdraw from the altar. Riding the auspicious clouds, I return to the Infinite, straight to the heavens above. Withdraws.
Session Sixteen
The Twenty-Fourth Day of the Third Month, Year Jichou (March 24, 1949)
Instruction of the Three-Heaven Examiner (三天主考), Maotian (茂田)
Maotian has studied some fine craftsmanship.
A great construction is to be raised —
the style must follow the ancients,
yet remain in common use.
The model must be dignified and imposing,
never light or frivolous.
The materials must be solid and enduring,
nothing makeshift or halfway.
The interior must be plain and unadorned,
never rough or careless.
As for the pace of construction — pursue speed at every turn.
What need not be delayed, do not delay.
Once the principles have been found,
first try your hand at drawing a plan.
With the framework in place, lay out the main lines and particulars.
Choose an auspicious day and break the ground.
Hire the craftsmen of the Five Trades and Eight Guilds,
masters from every discipline.
Divide the labor, share the work — each master serving his task.
First lay a firm foundation.
Then raise the beams and set the pillars.
Prepare sharp blades, steel knives, broad axes.
Every tool that is needed must be ready and in order.
If anything falls short, rush to fill the gap.
Strike the drum — at the sound of it, rise and move.
From dawn to dusk, never stop hand or foot.
Do not fear the labor. Accept the hardship gladly.
We ourselves will handle the rough work
and oversee the whole operation besides,
so that high and low alike keep steady footing.
Every item, large and small, every figure and sum,
shall be entered in the ledger.
What is paid out, what is received, what should go, what should come in —
sorted by type and category, perfectly clear.
What should be added, add. What should be subtracted, subtract.
What should be multiplied, multiply. What should be divided, divide.
In this way, with all strength gathered together, there will be considerable progress at last.
Along the way, wind and rain may block the path —
delays to the work are unavoidable.
But keep your spirit full and abundant.
Before long, the great work is finished — the grand design complete.
We thank every one of you for your thousand pains and ten thousand hardships.
Each receives his wages and goes on with his life.
Joyfully you lift your feet
and head for home, each to his own resting place.
We ourselves will straighten up and put things in order —
inside and out.
What needs sweeping, sweep. What needs papering, paper.
Every piece of furniture, neat and in its place.
In the hall, display old paintings, famous paintings, a Hundred Sons scroll —
a feast for the eyes and the heart.
Open a few winding gravel paths.
Under the eaves, keep a pool of golden fish,
swimming at ease — rising and sinking, breathing in and breathing out.
A sight to gladden the heart and delight the eyes.
In the courtyard, plant paulownia and parasol trees, green cypress and pine.
All the flowers and trees of the season — thick grass, tall bamboo.
Draw in the songbirds to sing of spring, the bees to swarm, the butterflies to dance.
The pleasure, naturally, overflows.
And do not forget — first invite the Mother to come and live here.
She, the Elder, looks around with satisfaction,
walks through the high gate and great entrance.
Indeed — clean bright windows, spotless tables, spacious and abundant.
Her heart is at ease.
She calls the children to come and stroll.
They look east and west — everywhere, splendor upon splendor.
We clap our hands, laugh, and call out to each other in joy.
And we name this place: the Lodge of Myriad Transformations. Ha ha!
Instruction of Ji Gong, the Fool Father (呆父)
I, the Fool Father, Superintendent of Construction, by the Sovereign's command come strolling at my leisure, paying respects to the Heavenly Brother. Are you all well? Let me keep the jade brush moving and write on. Ha ha!
The Lodge of Myriad Transformations — the Lodge of Myriad Transformations!
Though it took considerable effort,
and everyone spent every kind of hardship,
through countless spans of time —
the work is done, the task accomplished. What tremendous fortune!
Let us congratulate each of you for your toil and labor.
Each one worked with a public heart toward the great design.
One person's strength is limited — but many wills form a fortress,
and the great burden can be shouldered.
Know this: when the bitterness ends, the sweetness comes.
Let us be at ease, leisurely and free.
A tranquil dwelling, a carefree home —
browsing at will through ten thousand volumes of ancient and modern books.
Keep the company of sages. Befriend the noble and the wise.
All troubles dissolve of themselves.
Push aside the idle affairs and give them no regard.
Right and wrong, long and short — my mouth does not speak of them.
Order and chaos, rise and fall — my heart does not scheme over them.
A true friend takes the Dao as his foundation.
Cultivate your nature, and joy comes naturally. Desire little, and the spirit eases.
Sit facing each other and together awaken to the true principle.
Study what the sages truly practiced.
The pivotal mystery of Heaven and Earth,
the guiding threads of human affairs —
test them against each other. The true meaning accords.
One principle extends to ten thousand particulars — there is no discrepancy.
Sweep away the obstructions of words and knowledge.
Discover the subtle, the wondrous — bodhi itself —
right there in the square inch, the tree that casts no shadow.
Make this your doorway. Advance slowly, step by step.
Walk the true road. Find your own resting place.
Then, in this body, savor this life.
Do not waste a single step in the human world.
Extend this truth and proclaim it further —
you will build a foundation of real merit that others admire.
Beginning and end accord. First and last meet in the same place.
A person like this deserves to be called a true hero —
a pillar standing firm in the middle of the current.
My heart is full of joy.
I wish you boundless prospects,
clear brightness without number.
Open wide your heart.
Without shame before Heaven or Earth — a spirit broad and at ease.
Calm and natural.
In the future, I will shoulder great affairs alongside you once more.
Do not look at the toil of this moment as yours alone —
before long, the good fortune that comes will be mine as well.
I will surely raise you up in every way, look after you ten thousand times over.
But the present situation — how should it be handled?
This too demands your careful thought.
It is unlike the past. It must not be taken lightly.
The weather of Heaven is uncertain — the reckoning is hard to predict.
Overcast turns to clear, clear turns to overcast — is there not a reason within?
Favorable turns to adverse, adverse turns to favorable — what standard shall we use?
Affairs are sometimes easy, sometimes hard — it truly baffles the step forward.
What is past, let it go — all that has gone is gone.
Only plan for the present and weigh the future —
this is the step that matters.
East shifts to west, south is in chaos, north overturns.
Where is the pure and tranquil ground?
The responsibility will not allow us to stop our feet.
And the situation is far from clear —
it demands the most careful attention.
Moreover, the people are not yet of one accord.
How can I hold back these earnest words, this heart full of care?
How could I bear to cast them aside and wash my hands?
Though the will of Heaven has shifted,
still it should grant me time to bring the great work to order.
Only then will this heart be without shame.
Only then will this charge not have been shouldered in vain.
What else can be done? A thousand times, ten thousand times, I plead with Heaven.
And further — I lean upon all the Buddhas and patriarchs of every heaven, pouring out my case before them.
Perhaps the timing of Heaven can be pushed back one more turn.
But before long — the great overturning comes.
The truth is: the facts on the ground are not yet in accord.
The state of human affairs still falls far short.
As for the degree of readiness — some too ripe, some too raw, strong and weak impossible to fully describe.
If one day the will of Heaven answers the appointed reckoning,
the great wind rises, the storm pours down,
rivers surge, seas overturn, lakes are upended —
the numbers who fall will be beyond counting.
Those who survive will be few indeed. Is this not pitiable?
What a weight of suffering.
Consider the situation, examine the truth —
already we have received the grace of the Unborn Mother.
Were it not for that, long ago we would have been thrown into the boiling pot.
Brothers and sisters — do you understand? Do you know?
Is each person's foundation solid yet?
Has each person's vision opened?
How many bushels of grain can your heart hold?
Are your skills fully tempered?
Is every tool prepared and in order?
Even so, you still need wisdom and discernment.
Know your direction — do not lose it in fog.
What is true, what is false; what exists, what does not —
examine it all until it is perfectly clear.
A thousand days training the army for one hour's battle — remember this always.
Give constant thanks to Heaven.
Show genuine sincerity and steadfast faith.
Press forward. Temper your practice.
Be able to endure labor. Be able to eat bitterness.
Be able to bear injustice. Be able to swallow humiliation.
And furthermore — starve the body, exhaust the bones.
Bitter heart, bitter resolve — lay open your liver and bowels.
Bring out the true conscience and repay Heaven.
What else remains to be given?
Nothing more than to do what is within your power.
Once more, examine your own responsibility:
is there anything owed, anything neglected?
The higher the position, the greater the caution.
Be careful — one misstep, and the regret can never be redeemed.
It will drag down thousands upon thousands of lives.
It will sink nine generations of ancestors and seven generations of descendants.
Sins that fill the sky, crushing the Mountain of Shadows — one hundred and eighty thousand years of suffering.
Never to be restored. Remember this.
Can you not be careful?
Let the heart be always startled, the courage always trembling.
Truly it hangs by a single hair under the weight of a thousand pounds.
Never, never act with levity.
And further — feel the sufferings of the Merciful Mother.
For the sake of her disciples
she has poured out every drop of her heart, shattered her inmost being.
She has traveled to every corner. What labor has she feared?
Carriages, boats — every kind of upheaval.
She has spoken a thousand words, ten thousand words — and what was she after?
It is because the final great affair is at hand — a tension that is terrifying.
The coming transformation — Heaven the crucible, Earth the furnace.
Who can see through it? Who has truly perceived?
Were it not for her boundless merciful heart,
I fear you brothers and sisters would long ago have walked into the wilderness.
You all understand — what happened before, what kind of overturning that was.
How many of you did not lose your footing?
Were it not for the grace that reconnected the golden thread — how could you find the true road again?
Each of you — understand! Wake up, quickly!
Do not betray what you have been given. Do not fall back into confusion.
Where there are faults, do not excuse yourself.
Make yourself new. Become a new person.
Set a great standard. Find the guiding threads.
Take hold of your spirit and work together.
Time moves too fast. The auspicious window will not wait.
Do not delay any longer.
There is only one bright moment left to look toward.
Delay any more and the chance will not come again.
Brothers, unite your hearts into one. Bind your strength into a single rope.
Do not fear the surging waves, whatever blocks the way.
Do not fear the wild beasts — jackals, wolves, leopards, tigers.
Do not fear the demons and phantoms, the spirits that swarm.
Do not bow before brute power or oppression.
With upright spirit and broad axe —
absolutely no ambiguity.
What must be cut, cut. What must be cleared, clear.
Bring out the spirit of a true hero.
Let them turn back and bow their heads in submission.
A hero worthy of admiration —
great enough to contain even this humble soldier.
I am willing to carry the spear, haul the axe, follow at your side.
Let it be seen: a liver and gallbladder bright as sun and moon, a heart clear as a jade pot.
In every direction, a fearsome and reverent bearing — everywhere, a vital spirit, solemn and exact.
This is what it means to judge between the righteous and the wicked, the Buddha and the demon — two separate roads.
Fortunate that we have the great demon-quelling vajra pestle, the mountain-splitting sacred axe.
Together we may celebrate our fortune.
Everyone, rise together — joy and ease for all!
But I wait for the day when the Heartland reveals its light — the Eighteen Children take their seat upon the central earth.
I will see you, and you will see me.
Whose name will it be? I fear it will be another riddle.
This is a sealed gourd —
and you will not know what is inside it in advance.
I will not speak plainly now.
When the time comes, the authority and the majesty will be revealed.
Filial devotion to the Most High — shining bright upon the Eastern Land.
Hidden and then revealed, gone and then returned.
What was becomes nothing, what was straight becomes reversed.
What does it mean? I fear that even careful reflection cannot exhaust its depth.
Do not say the one in the middle of it is confused —
the bystander is even more bewildered.
One's own affair — and yet one is still stuffing gourds inside gourds.
In short, for now, it is all still in one pot together.
But one morning, the great sky turns fully bright —
and everything can be sorted, found, and separated.
Very well, very well!
No need to go on pulling at idle riddles.
Too many words, and a slip of the tongue — Heaven may not forgive.
What I have said — remember it.
Ponder it carefully.
Come often to visit the Lodge of Myriad Transformations —
do not let the ground go wild, the people go idle, and the trees grow thin.
Each of you — understand!
Each of you — awaken!
I say no more.
I bow, take my leave of you brothers and sisters, and withdraw from the altar.
My dharma-body rises into the sky, straight to the Mysterious Capital. Ha ha! Withdraws.

Guiding the Lost Back to Truth (指迷歸真) is a collection of sixteen spirit-writing sessions received at Yiguandao altars between 1944 and 1949 — from the closing years of the Second World War through the Chinese Civil War and the eve of the communist takeover of mainland China. Multiple celestial figures descend through the planchette with increasing urgency: the Zhangpan Patriarch (掌盤祖師, the celestial holder of the altar), Basou (八叟, Dean of the Celestial Academy), Ji Gong (as 師瘋呆, "the Crazy Fool"), Teacher Mother Sun Huiming, Yuehui Bodhisattva (月慧菩薩), Tianran Ancient Buddha (天然古佛, Zhang Tianran's posthumous emanation), the Three-Heaven Examiner (三天主考), Zhang the Dharma Lord (張法律主), and Ji Gong under his Southern Screen title (南屏道濟). The text is a document of a faith community under existential threat — the celestial hierarchy warning, exhorting, and preparing its children for the storm.
Sessions 1–16 translated from Classical Chinese by the New Tianmu Anglican Church, 2026. Gospel register. Sixteen sessions, seventeen tulku translators (Tei through Ryō, Sessions 122–136), seventy thousand characters, five years of spirit-writing, one complete book.
Compiled and formatted for the Good Work Library by the New Tianmu Anglican Church, 2026.
