Ten Thousand Ancestors Return to Truth

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

萬祖歸真 — Wànzǔ Guīzhēn

A collection of spirit-writing sessions compiled by Sun Zhaoxiang (孫兆祥), a Point Transmitter in Shandong Province, during the late 1930s and early 1940s. The text gathers planchette-received teachings from the ancestral founders of five world religions — Confucius, Shakyamuni Buddha, Laozi, Jesus Christ, and Muhammad — along with Guanyin, Dipankara Buddha, Guan Di, Amitabha, Lü Dongbin, and others. Each ancestor descends to the altar and, speaking through the planchette, confirms that the Dao of the One Thread (一貫道) is the true path, urging followers of every tradition to receive the transmission before the Third Period ends. The text closes with an appendix from 1948 in which Zhang Tianran (張天然), the Patriarch himself, speaks from beyond death — criticizing those who corrupt the Dao, comforting the faithful, and weeping as he departs. Organized in two volumes: Upper (ten sessions) and Lower (six sessions plus the appendix). First compiled and printed in Jinan at the Shuaizhen Altar and the Chonghua Hall.

Good Works Translation from Classical Chinese. First English translation. Gospel register.

Preface

By Nanping Daoren, at the Shuaizhen Altar in Jinan, 1942

The world is awash in confusion. A hundred false paths branch in every direction. The world is vast and dark. Who can tell true from false?

What is the Dao? It is principle. It is your original nature. It is the one essential thing in a human life — you cannot be separated from it for even a moment. Yet just as things have high and low, the Dao too has true and false.

The Dao of the One Thread is the root of heaven and earth, the unchanging principle of all ages. From one root, ten thousand branches grow. Generation after generation, the transmission of the Dao lineage was passed down, hand to hand.

But after the three sages returned to heaven, the true teaching faded. The deeper it was transmitted, the darker it became, until the world's seekers lost their way entirely. The sages' moral order collapsed. The ancient rites of kings fell into disuse. Among all living beings, who can tell true from false?

Even those who aspire to the Dao — some find the source unclear, some meet iron walls and copper barriers, some simply encounter misfortune. Problems multiply, the ocean seems uncrossable, and those who start on the wrong foot can never become vessels of truth. Others cling to dead forms and attack what they call heresy, but the real harm is their own blindness. If no one shows them the path, they will drift deeper and deeper into the dark country.

Now, in the Third Period's final tribulation, heaven opens the gate of written destiny. Spirit-writing altars are established to proclaim the teaching. The lost children are warned to climb out of the bitter abyss. Let those who polish bricks hoping for mirrors wake up now. The tiny bird filling the ocean with pebbles labors forever in vain.

God looked down on his people drowning in the depths. Without the buddhas and patriarchs descending through the planchette, no one could have awakened from this dream.

And so the teaching was transmitted from the Central Heaven. The three ages shared one crossing. Ten thousand teachings were gathered equally. We stand at the junction of the Noon and the Afternoon — the era of heaven's great gathering. All the scattered paths converge on one principle. The mist breaks, and all arrive together at the Primordial.

The world's thousand gates and ten thousand teachings wage war under one roof. Unless the truth intervenes, the age of Great Harmony can never come.

Our worthy brother Zhaoxiang saw all this clearly. He gathered the spirit-writing teachings of the ancestral patriarchs from every tradition and compiled them into one volume: Ten Thousand Ancestors Return to Truth. He printed it as a compass for cultivation and a bridge for seekers — gathering ten thousand teachings into one body, transforming ten thousand nations into one family. Under the bright sun, one Dao, one wind. All within the four seas ascend together. The distant and the near become parent and child. The ways of Yao and Shun appear again in our own day.

I urge all who aspire to the Dao: take courage. This is the preface.

The Golden Patriarch Descends to Give Teachings

At the Zhangqiu altar, twenty-first day of the tenth month, Year of the Water Horse (1942). The Gu planchette.

I am the Golden Patriarch. By holy decree I descend to this altar hall. I bow before the throne and take up the brush to write this chapter of instruction.

The Dao is beyond the Dao — principle reaches the deepest mystery. True emptiness is not empty; it gives birth to all things. Push understanding to its limit and you find nothing you can name. Use "Dao" as a word for it — the wonder is unsayable.

In stillness, contemplate and understand principle thoroughly. Not a speck of dust touches the heaven of the Limitless. Supreme spirit, supreme numinosity — transformation by non-action. It embodies all things without leaving anything out, and holds all categories within itself.

From principle came energy, and from energy came form. One root, ten thousand branches — this is the source. Human life stands within the Three Powers. Our nature is given by heaven, dwelling at the Mysterious Gate. But falling into the world of form and sound, we traded away our heavenly nature. People know they have a temperament, but not where it comes from. And so they drift further and further down. The bright virtue and original nature grow dim.

Since the world declined and the true Dao faded, the ancient wind disappeared. At the end of the Zhou dynasty, the Three Teachings split apart — each established words and teachings to proclaim heaven's will. After the Buddha, Laozi, and Confucius returned to heaven, the principle hovered between darkness and light. False teachings swarmed without restraint, and the true teaching was cast into the sky's ninth heaven.

Now the Third Period arrives, and heaven sends down the Dao. The three buddhas take their positions to manage the great gathering. What was never revealed before is now revealed. Past and future are joined, and the mind-transmission continues. Holding to the center, refining the one, receiving the legacy from above. Reverence for the master, sincerity of heart — these open the Dao's source.

Three realms share one hand on the helm. All methods return to the mind-transmission. True principle threads through mountains and seas. The tricks of mere technique are not the highest way. All that has form must ultimately be released; only the formless endures.

Now the world boils like a cauldron. The danger is extreme, the urgency beyond measure. In the Eastern lands, every period of order is followed by disorder — use the Dao to transform the people, spread it across the earth. A thousand gates and ten thousand teachings — the One Thread resolves them all. Without bowing to the bright master, you will fall to the abyss.

Look at the two banks of the Yellow River — the Patriarch opens the primordial to gather all affinities. What is high and what is low will be judged in the end. One Dao, one wind — the people at peace. The side paths and false gates planted seeds of good — but all must wait until the end, when the Patriarch gathers every last one.

Wake up early — there is still time. Miss the moment, and nothing can be completed. Heaven's universal salvation has its limit. The farthest extent is not many years away. The gentleman's Dao is both manifest and hidden — how long can it stand in the world? Even now, the Dao approaches its nirvana. The remaining spirits may not all be saved. In the White Sun's age, even becoming a buddha or a patriarch will be harder.

Those with determination — wake from this southern dream. Be first to the gate and win the laurel. Forty-eight thousand are chosen through the heavenly examination. The highest merit takes the highest seat. Those who see through this early — the results are settled in these very years. The lotus-seat must be earned while you live. Once the body is discarded, cultivation is impossible.

Since ancient times, immortals and buddhas were made by human beings. Who says a mortal cannot become divine? Look through all of history — the examples are too many to count. Anyone who truly acts can achieve it.

I wish only that all people would work on heaven's behalf — heaven gathers the ten thousand teachings and returns them to the Primordial. Shelter in the Cloud City through the seven-times-seven days. When the clouds break, the White Sun shines. Five winds, ten rains — the harmony of Great Peace. The phoenix and the unicorn appear. Yao and Shun again.

Weapons stored, no bandits. Then you will see with your own eyes. The gods and humans will meet, and the day will come. At the Dragon-Flower Assembly, merit is rewarded. Everything in good order, nothing in disarray.

In simple words, I have written this passage to show what is in the Patriarch's heart.

I bow, take my leave, and return to the Garden of Principle.

The Holy Ancient Buddha Descends at the Shuaizhen Altar to Guide the Followers to Return to the One Thread

Twenty-third evening of the tenth month, Year of the Water Horse (1942). The Gu planchette.

I am the Ancient Buddha of the Southern Sea. By imperial decree I descend to this altar. After paying respects to heaven, I speak to the assembly. I will reveal one passage of wondrous mystery.

The mountains are bright and the waters beautiful on this deep winter night, but the great dream of the southern chamber grows heavier still. At the third watch, the lamps burn for universal salvation — now is the time when the destined ones reach the boat of mercy.

The autumn gold wind stirs. At the winter solstice, the yang is reborn and the air grows warm. Thunder shakes the sleeping dragon awake. The true immortals sit in the bamboo grove without speaking.

I remember the moonlit night when the lute played and exhausted every note of human grief. Who will hear the music of the high mountains and flowing water? I sit through the night and wait for dawn.

The golden bird illuminates the world. The precious raft slips its moorings to ferry the lost across. Those with the affinity will encounter the Buddha's appearance in the world. Those without foundations will sink into the depths.

The Third Period meets the end of its era. The three buddhas received their commands and descended to transform the original people. Vast, vast is God's virtue — deep as heaven, bright as the sun, boundless as the sea. A single leaf of the mercy-boat is set upon the bitter sea, calling out urgently, searching for those who hear.

By heaven's imperial commission, the examination opens. The bright master whose name is Bow-and-Long transmits the highest truth. But the world's false paths fill every eye. Where can you find the true one when the forest is so thick?

The world is vast and dark — no true principle anywhere. People repeat what others say. Confusion upon confusion.

I, the Buddha, hold compassion as my nature. I save the suffering — Guanyin who hears the cries of the world. Wherever there is a cry, I hear it. Wherever there is need, I come. I rescue the faithful and deliver them from the tribulation's wind.

Once I set a teaching and saved many — good, but it was not the highest way. I led people to the road of awakening and waited for the White Sun's final spring.

The true master, the only one, bears the name Tianran. He transmits the mind-method and walks on purple clouds. In former days I established my teaching to plant the seeds of good. The story of the gourd had its reason. Ritual is really principle, but people did not understand. In those times the true method was half-hidden, half-revealed — opening and closing, subtle beyond measure. The lost ones never penetrated the truth within.

To save the world I came to the Eastern lands. I have taken fifty-seven incarnations — some succeeded, some failed, as principle determined. Hidden and then revealed again, the world has never heard the full account.

In the Western Heaven, nine hundred and sixty million buddha-natures all fell into confusion in the Eastern grove. Trapped in one corner, unable to escape the bitter cycle — this is why I, the Buddha, roused my compassion. With complete devotion I transformed the lost ones. People call me the Guanyin who sits facing backward. Why? Because the world's dream is still so deep. If I do not ring the morning bell to wake them, who else is there?

Now we have entered the era of the final tribulation. This is the perfect time to escape the bitter sea. From the formed into the formless — the day of heaven's gathering. Ten thousand teachings return together to one root.

The heavenly order, the Dao order, the tribulation — the three buddhas hold the balance among them. The wise should know the signs of the times. Each era has its mechanism — understand the difference. The Dao of heaven and the Dao of humanity are one body, but the human heart and the Dao-heart are not equal.

I urge those who are determined: be first to the purple throne. Do not wait until the cliff's edge to rein in the horse — it will be too late. The bird filling the ocean wastes its heart for nothing.

Since ancient times there have been a thousand roads, but principle has only true and false. The clear-eyed take one step and stand beyond heaven. The confused ones stumble into the wrong fork and sink into the abyss.

Right now, true and false are almost ready to be judged. The Great Assembly of Ten Thousand Immortals is approaching. A thousand gates and ten thousand teachings all claim to be good. When the time comes, the true and the false will sort themselves.

This is not reckless talk from the Buddha. These are honest words, not mad ravings. Worthy ones — do not waste the precious day. Prize your minutes more than jade. Forget food in your fervor to cultivate the One Thread. Sleep on a bent arm and feel content. Hang from a beam, prick your thigh — study the highest principle. Read with your ox's horns — this is what makes a true sage.

The great Dao must be understood through patient contemplation. When the breakthrough comes, the original spirit appears. Everyone can become a diamond body. Yao and Shun were made of the same substance as all of you.

Those who act with determination become great vessels. When you truly understand, the gods silently bow. I beg my followers: read this instruction, awaken, and do not slacken your hearts.

Heaven's time for the great gathering is running short. Do not make your Buddha carry this burden in his chest. Quickly seek the bright master, who will point open the Mysterious Gate — the doorway of the dark female, the root of heaven and earth. The true Dharma eye must be penetrated. The true person is not far — it is in your own body. One point at the center, a seamless lock. The ancient mirror polished bright, the dust clears of itself. Rise into the sky, realize the diamond awakening. One labor, and forever after — the eternal spring of joy. Do not betray these words of warning. Every character is gold and stone — engrave them on your heart.

I have nothing more to add.

(Point Transmitter Sun Zhaoxiang asked: When the Ancient Buddha came to save Patriarch Yang, she appeared as a woman and sheltered from rain in his cave. Yang feared the impropriety of a man and woman together and left at dawn. The Buddha said, "Wait — turn and see who I am." Yang turned and saw Guanyin revealed. He knelt and begged for mercy. Because his heart was sincere, she transmitted the mind-method and the Mysterious Gate, granting him liberation. She instructed Yang not to transmit further, but to wait for the Third Period's great gathering and seek the One Thread. Meanwhile he should spread her name to plant good seeds. Is this account true?)

What you say is indeed true. Examine the records of every generation and you will see for yourself. I hope you will continue my mission and build merit by spreading the teaching on my behalf. I entrust everything to you worthy ones. In time, you will ascend to the nine highest ranks.

Confucius Speaks on His Birthday

Twenty-seventh day of the eighth month, Year of the Metal Serpent (1941). Confucius's birthday.

We, the Four Correlates and the Ten Philosophers, follow the Master's carriage from the blue emptiness. We pay our respects to the throne. We will not speak further.

I am the Supremely Holy King of Literary Proclamation — Confucius. By imperial edict I come to the ancient East. I bow before heaven and take up the brush. My instruction follows.

All the worthies gather together at the altar. On my birthday they receive the gift of connection. The seeds planted three thousand years ago bear fruit today — now we can speak freely at last.

This is determined by human destiny, but it is also heaven's doing. At the end of the age, heaven collapses and the world sinks beyond description. False teachings and crooked practices corrupt the true teaching. The Three Teachings all lose their original transmission at the same time. Deeper and deeper they fall, more and more they change — until they produce the unprecedented great tribulation. Grand cities become scorched earth. The heart breaks at what the eyes must see.

Yet the people of the world know nothing. They are all still sleeping in the great dream.

The Dao is restored in the Third Period. First it saves the lands of the East, then transforms the Central Plains. How fortunate that the worthy ones of my home country have all received the true Dao and boarded the dharma-boat! The suffering of my travels through the kingdoms long ago was not in vain — the seeds planted then bear fruit today. Worthy ones, help the Bow-and-Long Patriarch in this work. Unite your hearts, hold firm your determination.

To honor the ancestors and serve the future is no small matter. Pursue it to the end — your good name will endure. Your name recorded in the annals for one hundred and eight thousand years. Your virtue paired with the sun and moon, threading heaven and earth.

Fame and wealth always end. When your allotment runs out, you return to the cycle. Only if you hold fast to this good Dao will you never be destroyed, never fade, for eternity.

Heaven and earth may end and begin again, but principle does not change. Phenomena may shift and rotate, but principle does not move. You must set your determination and endure with bitter effort. Do not fear the trials and the testing spirits.

I myself endured the siege at Chen and Cai. They felled trees to block my path, they erased my tracks — but my resolve never wavered. The nature given by heaven must be made firm. What does this body of flesh matter?

When they come with evil, meet them with good. The soft overcomes the hard — this is the natural way. The true Dao has always been rare among people. Once you have it, you must hold it with sincerity and devotion.

In the ancient days, cultivation came before the pointing. Dawn to dusk, night after night — exhausting the heart. Without great virtue and true goodness, you could never receive the transmission of the dark female.

Count the sages of history on your fingers — every one of them tasted bitterness before sweetness. The Three-Period mind-transmission has been entrusted to you. Take up the great work now.

Rouse your strength — be chosen as pillars and beams. Help the Patriarch complete the great gathering. I am grateful that you celebrate my birthday today. Your sincerity warms my heart.

I write to this point and will not pass judgment. I bid farewell to you worthy ones and return to the blue heaven.

Shakyamuni Buddha Instructs the Assembly After They Receive the Dao

Twelfth day of the second month, Year of the Metal Serpent (1941). The Lihua Altar.

I am Shakyamuni Buddha. By decree I come to the Eastern lands. I enter the Buddha Hall and bow before heaven. Then I write this instruction for you, the worthy assembly.

A thousand gates and ten thousand teachings — one source only. One principle threading through all — contemplate it carefully. Now the One Thread bears heaven's mandate. All together, seek the Dao; the Mysterious Gate is pointed open.

"One" — this is the true principle. Ten thousand teachings returning to one — this is the true explanation. If you can penetrate the meaning of this single character, one step carries you beyond and home to the Primordial.

First: one, because the human being is chief among the ten thousand things. One point of spirit-light, originally complete and round. When you receive the master's pointing, the thatched roof breaks open and the one mystery is clear.

But the people of the world do not know the true principle of one. In the sea of greed, anger, and delusion, they do not know to turn back toward the one root. They watch only for fame and profit with a one-track mind.

Better to cultivate the great Dao with one heart! Thread one principle through the three thousand worlds. One person who receives the Dao — nine generations of ancestors rejoice. One step and you stand beyond the highest heaven.

With one heart, strive to achieve the Dao! No one is saved by private goodness alone. If one person can transform the multitude, together we board the other shore and return as one.

Return as one to recognize the Eternal Mother. The spirit-light was originally one body. But in confusion it was forgotten — one fall into the bitter sea, and you can never turn back.

Now you have this one rare chance. It cannot come twice in one world-age. This one time — receive it, and you are safe forever.

The Dao is true, principle is true, and one is the root. "Threading all with one" — the mystery within the Dao. Embrace the origin, hold the one — the fruit is wondrous. "All methods return to one" — the Buddha's own words.

"Holding the center, threading the one" — the sage Confucius's words. One encompasses heaven and wraps the earth — it contains everything. Penetrate this single character and its mystery is beyond wonder. It surpasses reading ten thousand volumes.

Scripture is a path, and one is its body. Root of tree, source of water — one root, whole and complete. I myself was originally one buddha-nature from the Western Heaven, fallen into the red dust for one lifetime.

Fortunately, with one heart I left home to practice. One heart, one virtue, searching for my heavenly nature. One pointing — I became the Buddha, radiant for a thousand leagues. The golden body of sixteen feet — seen once in a world-age.

One lifetime of bitter toil, ten thousand lifetimes of joy. A carefree immortal for all eternity! I had no desire to come again to the Eastern lands — weary of this world's tangled mystery.

But today, by the Emperor's decree, I seize this chance to speak briefly. I urge you: follow my example of one-pointed mind. One mind like this — the most peaceful and serene.

I was once the crown prince of a kingdom. Even that I was able to throw away with one hand. A thousand hardships, ten thousand sufferings — I accepted them one by one. Without meeting the bright master, one cannot speak of it.

You have not left behind fame and profit — that single seed of greed still in your heart's field. Look through the Dao — see it with single clarity. Value the holy, lighten the worldly — hold your one determination firm.

Three lifetimes of fortune brought you to this meeting with the Dao. How can you waste this one rare connection? Time flies past in the blink of one eye. To seek a second pointing — harder than hard.

If you betray heaven's one-hearted effort to transform you, if you break the great vow — one debt that cannot be repaid. In time you will understand the principle of one. The One Thread is the root and source.

Ten thousand teachings share one root — hurry forward! Be first to plant the banner of one. Be the standard for all — one measure, one rule. Plant the pole, the shadow appears — one heart before you.

One speech cannot exhaust it all. Assembly, unite your one heart and support the dharma-altar. Transform one into a hundred, a thousand — the merit is immeasurable. With one heart, support the Dao, and the light falls upon you.

I take my leave. One character of mystery. One step up the clouds, and I return to the Western Heaven.

Laozi, the Celestial Worthy of the Dao and Its Virtue, Instructs the Assembly

Sixteenth day of the intercalary sixth month, Year of the Metal Serpent (1941). At the request of Point Transmitter Sun Zhaoxiang.

I am the Celestial Worthy of the Dao and Its Virtue. By imperial decree I come to this altar. I pay my respects to the Mother and speak these honest words. Assembly — calm your hearts, stand in reverence, and do not make noise.

Each person has both nature and life complete. Heaven's gift — the true master, the original source. Cultivate the vast, righteous breath. Let it fill the six directions without limit.

Small beyond all smallness — only the subtle. Threading heaven and earth — all contained. When a person is born and receives a nature, it is originally one luminous whole. The essences of the two fives form the body. Only when the three fives are complete is the nature made whole.

The Three Teachings all speak of the One Thread. Different names, same meaning — all the same. "Embracing the origin, holding the one" — the Daoist teaching. "Holding the center, refining the one" — the Confucian words. "All methods return to one" — the Buddhist phrase. All of them are the mind-transmission of the One Thread.

The Dao has no form and no image. Anything with form is not the true transmission. The true method is genuinely given, not empty. The great Dao of the Limitless is wondrous and profound.

Preserve the heart and nourish the nature — know the root. What comes first and what comes after — the Dao is there. One who knows root and branch is a worthy person. One who sees through to the true principle is a divine immortal.

The single character's mystery is inexhaustible — it can fill the earth and wrap the sky. There is principle, there is energy, there is form. Upper, middle, and lower — three ranks.

The upper rank is non-action — this is the Dao. The middle rank is seated meditation. The lower rank is chanting and drumming. First understand the mechanism of the three ranks.

Confucius's Dao was the One Thread. Heaven's mandate, the rate of nature — this is the origin. The Diamond Sutra's "Thus have I heard." The Dao De Jing's five thousand words. The centered, harmonious, great Dao is fair — it can hold all good, all things. Open in all directions — only principle. Encompassing all forms — the circle of emptiness.

The Dao is the supreme principle of the Limitless. It can save nature and life, returning them to heaven. The lower rank plants blessings and cultivates goodness — but that only sweetens the next life. To transcend birth and death is harder to learn. Those who achieve it can hope for sagehood.

Confucius traveled the kingdoms and took three thousand disciples. Only seventy-two became worthy. Of those, only four received the Dao. Zigong often lamented how difficult it was to attain the master's teaching on nature and the Dao.

For an ordinary person to receive the Dao — it is like climbing to heaven. The Dao is in every person's body, but those who see it are truly few.

Now the true Dao is spread among the common people. Going door to door, searching house to house. The heavenly, true buddha-children with the affinity — the mind-method of the Three Teachings is transmitted to them.

It all depends on your own calculation. The non-dual dharma-gate has appeared in the world. It is not far — it is right before your eyes. But until you enter, you cannot understand. Each Dao is different, but this one is not ordinary.

The Dao that just means eating and wearing clothes — that is not the transmission of the One Thread. True emptiness and wondrous existence, genuinely given. It does not cheat people of their money. Money blocks the road. The only fear is that wicked men enter.

In everything, investigate the deepest principle. Know the reason behind the mystery. The natural, the empty, the wondrous. The one transmission, refined and pure. Yao and Shun transmitted the mind-method — it was always the One Thread's transmission. "Hear the Dao in the morning, die content in the evening" — it is nothing other than the principle of true emptiness.

Enter the hall and the inner chamber — understand clearly. Your heavenly nature, the rate of the Dao, the Mysterious Gate. The fetters of emotion and the chains of love — sweep them away and be free. The seven emotions and six desires cloud the nature. How can you return to the origin?

In this life, the great fortune of receiving the Dao — do not enter the treasure mountain and leave empty-handed. Practice merit, perform good deeds, and teach others. When the time comes, you will see the Mother's face.

These matters I tell to those who have the affinity. The true Dao — the One Thread comes first. The Great Learning, the Doctrine of the Mean — true principle. The origin of all the thousands of scriptures and canons. Never take this lightly. The pulse connects, the thread continues, flowing on.

I turn the brush and speak again to the assembly. Receiving the Dao in this life is no ordinary thing. The Three Treasures — the heart-seal, the mouth-instruction, the hand-sign — these can free you from the eighty-one tribulations. The proof of transcending the ordinary and entering the holy. Never treat them lightly. The ancient secret of the Primordial. Look at it — no form, the circle of emptiness. Remember the Three Treasures and press forward. You can become a buddha, a patriarch, an immortal.

Today's rare connection is not small. Having found the affinity, do not lose it again. Strive forward with effort and determination. Fight to take the highest place. In this life you have the great fortune of receiving the Dao. Contemplate the mystery of bright virtue. Spread the outer work of renewing the people. Let the roots grow deep and the leaves flourish by the thousands.

The great Dao depends entirely on human effort. Do not stand to one side and refuse to move. This is the hour of the good meeting. When you return to the void with empty hands — how can you face the Mother? How can you take your place among the immortals?

The time to build merit is now. One heart, one virtue — this comes first. Since ancient times, becoming a buddha or patriarch has depended entirely on your own heart's field.

Today I descend through the planchette to give this instruction — in order to save those who have the affinity. A thousand words, ten thousand phrases, all to tell you. Do not treat them as wind passing your ears. The One Thread is the Dao of Heaven. The only dharma-boat in the Eastern lands. I will not write more.

Follow this instruction, press forward, and contemplate.

Jesus Christ Speaks on Christmas Day

The fourth day of the eleventh month, Year of the Earth Tiger (1938) — the twenty-fifth of December.

I am Jesus Christ. By decree of the Lord I come to the Eastern garden. I pay my respects to God and address you, the assembly. Let me speak frankly.

Heaven and hell — blessing and disaster are two different paths. I left behind a clear teaching of the good Dao, but no one has received its true transmission. Those who expound it make flowers rain from the sky, but when you look closely, they do not understand the root. Hymns of praise rise to God, but your mouths recite while your hearts wander — this betrays heaven. Even if you memorize the scriptures front to back, not a single word of yours leads to transcendence.

I sigh over you, my lost children — you rely entirely on begging God and leaning on heaven. God is indeed almighty, but he helps only the good and worthy. Heaven's mandate has shifted, the human order has changed. Each era has its mechanism and its boat. I have said all I can about the good Dao. I have saved the fields of the human heart. The transmission was passed from mouth to heart — but the wrong time, it could not be spoken.

Now ten thousand teachings return to the One Thread. I too have left heaven to help. I watch the end of the world approaching. My followers are confused — their natures more clouded than ever.

Born and dying — from where do you return? I bore your sins — but for what purpose? I left the cross standing, but the faithful treat it as nothing. I do not wish to see you all destroyed together. Now the bamboo brush speaks words of truth.

Your sins are truly beyond counting. To rely on me alone to save you — that is too much to ask. When your conduct violates principle, atonement is not granted by heaven. Wake up in time! Turn around — the road is level. My lambs have lost their way. I have come to lead you forward.

See clearly the signs of the times. Do not linger. Hell and heaven — one thought between them.

Today is my birthday — a blessing not easily won. But have you truly embodied my teaching? Has your conscience appeared? You recite the words and forget the taste — you have lost the very purpose of salvation. You go your separate ways and become lost dogs without a home. The great dream goes on and on, and no one wakes.

You know only to rely on me — truly, it is too much. Pray with sincerity and heaven will give unexpected grace. But you cannot delay any longer. At any moment, everything may change. Those who cling to old forms will be finished.

The world is vast, the false roads many. Only those who understand the signs of the times have the rare affinity. The Great Harmony of all nations will appear before long. Without seeking the One Thread, you cannot return to heaven. The teachers of every tradition on earth — all return to the true transmission. How much more should you, my powerless lost children, turn around and board the boat.

The vast and bitter sea swallows the many who are lost. Those who have received the Dao — spread it far and wide.

I sigh that the good hour has not yet come and the confused ones cannot turn their heads. I fear that when heaven overturns and earth collapses, all will perish together. Those who cannot enter heaven will become the fallen.

Today, you who gather for this meeting — you are truly not ordinary. I watch the birthday celebrations and they look like madness. Outwardly joyful, inwardly sorrowful — hard to look upon.

God's intention was universal love. I beg you, lost children — listen to my honest words. This is a revelation of heaven's secret. Ordinary confused ones could never have seen it. But now the tide of desire runs so high that it has buried so many worthy souls. God sends the Dao to rescue the lost children. I too have been decreed to proclaim on heaven's behalf.

Three thousand years of secret — now even the common person receives it. This is truly the rarest fortune of three lifetimes. Treasure it. Take the lead. I beg you, faithful ones with this affinity — hold this Dao and do not waver.

I know my followers. I call from the heights — you should be the first to answer. I have no other words. Where the truth is most refined, it can only be received in silence.

What is there to fear from the great tribulation? Abide always in your own radiant, luminous spirit. I will not say more. I urge you, lost children — the rest is up to you. Walk the bright and great road. The path to heaven is unexpectedly level.

I bid farewell to God and rest. When the occasion comes again, we will meet.

The Prophet Muhammad Instructs the Muslim Convert Han Xitong After He Receives the Dao

Sixth day of the first month, Year of the Earth Rabbit (1939).

I am the Prophet Muhammad, founder of Islam. By decree of the Sovereign I descend to this altar. I enter the room and pay my respects. Assembly — steady your spirits. I am your honored guest. Listen to the truth.

The true principle of the universe is boundless. The sages appeared in the world to uphold heaven's law. They established the ultimate standard and transformed the fallen customs. Five teachings arose together, each carried to its extreme.

Though the teachings differ, the principle is one — the same in substance. Islam's tradition spans seven thousand years. But by the eighteenth century, the true transmission was lost.

Our founder was Adam. Islam's original name is "surrender." Adam built great merit — the first sage to rule the world. Noah rose after him, and Abraham continued the transmission. In the Xia dynasty, Moses appeared. In the Shang, David. In the Zhou, Jesus — and after Jesus's death, the Dao lineage was complete.

False teachings and strange doctrines ran wild. For six hundred years, the world was overturned. The True Lord commanded me to appear in my time.

I was young and knew hardship. Abdullah was my father, but he died early. At six, my mother Amina also left the mortal world. My grandfather Abu Muttalib raised me, but within two years he too was gone. My uncle Abu Talib cared for me — his kindness was like a mountain.

I came to Mecca and became a merchant, working as a hired hand for a wealthy widow for twenty-five years. I married Khadija. I dwelt in solitude, contemplating the mystery in silence.

At forty I received the command of God — just as Confucius accepted the mandate of heaven at fifty. The angel revealed the scripture through sacrifice. I had no rest — I traveled to transform the world.

The people of Mecca rejected heaven's command. The True Lord ordered me to migrate. In Medina the affinity was deep — converts gathered like sails unfurling. After that I conquered Syria, leading the charge myself. The great Dao is impartial — it judges between right and wrong. In crisis and in peace, all looked to me.

The five pillars of human duty: declaration, prayer, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage. The five pillars of heavenly duty — contemplate them through the Quran. Wooden idols and divine images are all puppets. The claim that Jesus redeemed sins through substitution is empty talk.

Unclean things should be avoided, as principle demands. The Halal path is bright and clear. Urge people to do good and receive the Lord's blessing. Forbid evil and earn the Lord's joy.

In the year 632, I died at the age of sixty-three. Now in the Third Period, the True Lord turns the heavenly order. Those who read the signs of the times are the truly worthy. The bright master in the Eastern lands, whose name is Bow-and-Long, bears the heavenly mandate. The great work of the three realms rests on one person's shoulders.

I have descended to this altar and written instructions, but my followers cling to the old ways and do not heed my words. My disciple Xitong has sought the true Dao. The Three Treasures — the heavenly secret — the heart-seal of mystery. From today forward, this fulfills the intention of our ancestor. The register of the faithful is now fully inscribed.

Clinging to old forms is not the mark of a hero. Spread the Dao, carry it forward — return in devotion to the truth. Rectify the heart, rectify the foundation — the true self becomes clear with one pointing. Contemplate deeply, and one day it breaks through — transcending the ordinary and entering the holy is a single step away.

My followers — if you can settle your own path today, then save others too, and press forward without hesitation. The world of Great Harmony, light blazing — in the White Sun age, we all ride together in the heaven of Yao and Shun.

The principle is far-reaching, the path is near. Follow it and advance. To cling to error and turn your back on heaven is the work of a fool.

Tribulations are rising on every side — each of you, wake up! Do not stand waiting by the stump for another rabbit.

I write these few words, and I ask you to remember them. I take my leave and return to the Garden of Joy.

Dipankara Buddha Instructs the Followers of the Tongshan Society

Fifth day of the sixth month, Year of the Earth Rabbit (1939).

I am Dipankara, the Ancient Buddha. I have come to instruct you, the assembly. I enter the Buddha Hall and pay my respects to heaven. Then I write.

The world's customs are ruined, and human bonds are swept away. Three disasters and eight difficulties press in, one after another. How many faithful ones fail to understand the truth — they fall into the bitter sea and spin through the six paths of rebirth.

They do not know that heaven's mandate has already shifted. They cling to their confusion and willingly sink. How pitiful — so many heroes, their blood staining the blade's edge, returning through the gate of the underworld.

The Dao of heaven appeared in response to the times, the precious raft universally ferrying and pointing the way across the ford. Nine hundred and sixty million original souls — all rescued by one hand. The Ancient Buddha Maitreya's vow is profound.

The great work of the three heavens is the gathering. Ji Gong, your teacher, bears his share of the task. He descended into the world disguised as the Bow-and-Long Patriarch — his name is Tianran, the one who steers the vessel.

The three buddhas who govern the world — you should know them. The first, the Ancient Buddha, came to the world first. The second, Shakyamuni, governed the Red Sun age. The third, Maitreya, governs the Third Period's spring. Each era has its mechanism — who can understand it all? Heaven's mandate shifts, and the Third Period arrives.

The three realms are universally saved. The Bow-and-Long holds the helm. Gods and humans alike bow before the Limitless.

At this meeting, the Dao of heaven appears. The One Thread's true transmission ferries the original people. One who attains this "one" first becomes great. One who threads this greatness is a true person. The mandate of heaven, this one — it is your true self. Follow your nature and understand this one — you become a sage, a god.

This one belongs to everyone, but the people of the world do not know where to seek it. One pointing — you rise beyond the three realms. Why sit in bitter meditation chanting scriptures?

I urge you: follow this instruction and seek the One Thread. Find the bright master and let him point open the Valley Spirit. Build merit, practice virtue, transform others on heaven's behalf. When the work is complete, the fragrance endures for ten thousand ages.

But I grieve that you cling so stubbornly. Within the Tongshan Society you hold sincere hearts — but your illness I know well. Your vows weigh heavily, making it hard to leave. And you have not yet asked the Ancient Buddha for guidance — so you hesitate and delay.

Look at my disciple Zhongquan. He asked Patriarch Lü for guidance and heard the truth. Patriarch Lü made it clear — he will carry the burden of the old vow himself. Seek the One Thread.

I ask you today: do you have anything to say? I, the Patriarch, will instruct you — follow and obey.

(Yang Zhongquan asked: We burn merit-paper and spirit-treasures for our deceased mother to seek her liberation. Does this reach her?)

Those in the Court of Principle have no need for such things. There is no such affair in that realm. If you cultivate the Dao sincerely, your mother too can reach the highest. The Mother will naturally show compassion to you — one level after another. But you must understand the difference between true and false. Recognize the truth quickly.

Hurry — run forward and awaken. I will say no more. I bid farewell and return to the carefree ford of the Limitless.

Guan Di Instructs the Followers of the Golden Elixir Dao

Nineteenth day of the intercalary sixth month, Year of the Metal Serpent (1941). Followers of the Golden Elixir Dao — Zhao Maoyun, Zhao Yubao, Zhao Tianmin, and others — make a silent request.

Three bright, four dark — the heavenly order turns. West-dry, East-quake — the order is now changed. The Chonghua Hall bears the mandate to manage the gathering. The Patriarch who steers the vessel is Zhang Tianran.

I am Guan, the Jade Emperor of the Central Heaven. By heaven's command I travel freely and arrive at this altar. I pay my respects to the holy throne. I meet the worthy assembly. To cultivate our heavenly Dao — this requires both portion and affinity.

The Three Teachings share one principle and order the cosmos. Ten thousand branches return to one — the great dharma-gate. To cultivate the Dao you must understand the Three Periods. The heavenly Dao is spread universally across the red dust.

How pitiful — those who cling to confusion and will not awaken. A frog in a well, watching the sky through a circle. The summer insect cannot know winter's cold. The well-frog cannot count the stars. Those whose vision reaches far are the truly worthy. Those who cling to confusion fall and sink. Recognize the true principle and press forward — this marks the good roots of a former life.

Honor the teacher, value the Dao — this is only right. The wrong fork and the crooked path — how can they compare to the true? Each of you should awaken to the principle of the Limitless. True and false will sort themselves clearly.

Do not hesitate with an undecided heart — miss this rare chance and you will never hear it again.

Since ancient times, the great Dao was never lightly revealed. The world's seekers search in confusion. Where is the principle of nature and the mind-method? Under the twin trees — awaken to the original truth. But the confused ones do not understand. All day they practice breathing and energy-cultivation in error.

Most of them mistake energy for principle. They do not know how vast the difference is. There is an innate, primordial nature in every human body. Why search elsewhere and waste your spirit?

Heaven's mandate has secretly shifted to the Bow-and-Long Patriarch. The false paths and side gates cannot recognize the truth. The Dao called "One Thread" appears in its time. All methods return to the truth of the Limitless.

When all under heaven celebrate and the world is set right — then you will see what the great Dao truly means. One step — you rise beyond the three realms. Why endure bitter practice and exhaust the body of flesh?

The road of right and wrong — you choose which to walk. The bright, level way — seek it quickly. Penetrate the real and the false, the empty and the solid. Ten thousand teachings return together to one root.

I write these few words. I bid farewell and return. Each of you — awaken to the highest principle and pursue the Dao.

Fuyang Emperor Zhao Instructs the Assembly After They Receive the Dao

I am Fuyang Emperor Zhao. By imperial decree I leave my immortal island. I set foot on the purple clouds and travel with perfect ease. I arrive at the Eastern lands, pay my respects, and take up the brush to make this instruction known.

The Three Teachings are three petals of one lotus. Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism — principle comes first. In the beginning, the Primordial Patriarch Hongjun divided the Three Teachings. The opening of heaven and earth — the Dao came first.

Through the cycles of the Zi, Chou, and Yin — the three powers arose. The great virtue of bright illumination spread through the three thousand worlds. One cycle returns, and the mystery is hidden within. The Eight Trigrams — one stroke of heaven.

The Five Emperors and Three Sovereigns — the Dao shone brightly. Kings and lords received the wondrous mystery. From ancient times to the present, count carefully — the transmission was always single and solitary, never given to more than one.

When the Dao of the kingdoms fell into chaos, Laozi transmitted to Confucius at the foot of Mount Baiqi. Confucius transmitted to Yan Hui, Zengzi, Zisi, and Mencius — then at the Goose Lake, the fragrant thread of Zhu Xi was broken. In the Tang dynasty, the monk Xuanzang received the wondrous meaning. The southern branch gained the Eight Immortals. Now in the Third Period, the Red Sun sets. The great Dao was buried for thousands of years.

Bodhidharma brought the western meaning. The Second Patriarch Shenguang boarded the cloud-ship. Generation after generation, the transmission reached the eighteenth — the Bow-and-Long Patriarch now bears the great responsibility.

In these times, ten thousand teachings appear at once. Each boasts and competes, claiming to be first. I established the Guiyi — who does not know? I too received heaven's mandate and descended. I planted the seeds of goodness and established the Buddha-affinity. I only waited for the Dao of heaven to call me aboard the boat.

Now the boat of mercy docks at the shore. But my followers linger and are reluctant to leave.

You good ones — strive harder! Do not sink into the abyss. Faithful ones, remember my words well.

I take my leave, stop the planchette, and return. Rest, then contemplate this instruction. Do not set it aside and forget.

The Fuyang Great Immortal Arrives at the Altar

Fourteenth day of the fourth month, Year of the Metal Dragon (1940). At the request of Man Jinxiu.

(First, a celestial escort introduces the immortal and brings him to the altar.)

I am the Fuyang Immortal. By decree, I follow the celestial guide to this altar. I pay my respects to God and to the teacher and his wife. I meet my guiding master. Joy beyond measure. I offer a few words — this is our first meeting.

The round canopy of blue sky covers all things. Between heaven and humanity — yin and yang in every space. The foolish worry and fret. The wise understand and are at peace.

The body of an immortal is different from a human's, but when you trace it back, the root is the same. One thought of wisdom proves the immortal fruit — why labor in caves, sitting in closed meditation?

What rare fortune — to be alive in the Third Period. What an extraordinary affinity! This meeting is not easily come by. God planned it naturally.

The human and the heavenly should share one original body. No more spinning through the six paths of rebirth. The two characters "One Thread" — this principle is refined and wondrous. The method of non-action — how can words contain it?

Who would have thought that an immortal of a thousand years was still gazing at clouds and water in a mirror? In the old days I discussed the esoteric and debated the mysterious — but I had not opened the single aperture. The difference was the distance between heaven and the abyss.

I knew only that the great energy of heaven and earth was the master. I did not know that within the energy, principle is more profound still. Principle resides in energy without being mixed with energy. Principle transcends energy and stands alone in peace.

Energy has movement and stillness, beginning and end, first and last. All things depend on energy, yet all things perish, and energy perishes too. Although it comes and goes without a trace, you can observe the quality of energy. But all forms are ultimately illusory. Energy is like clouds and water — no different.

In the old days, my companions in the Dao went their own ways, dissolving into heaven and earth. I too once sought out suffering to save it. I too once established a teaching to rescue the world. But who knew that I myself still harbored suffering? Who knew that the danger of the six paths still encircled me?

Suffering, its cause, its cessation, the path — the Four Noble Truths I understood. The twelve links of dependent origination all pull on each other. But even if you understand worldly truth, the methods of gods and humans are still not the highest mystery.

Now, with one pointing at the root of heaven and earth, I see through to every practice at once. From today I know that within the earth there is principle. And beyond heaven — there is another heaven.

The immortal's pavilions — reflections of the moon in water. Roaming, dwelling as a guest — never truly at rest. The Isles of Penglai — illusory islands. For a thousand years, this was all I knew.

I established teachings for others but had not saved myself. I only discussed yin and yang — cultivating the post-heaven. Refine the elixir through nine turns and fly to the heavenly realm — but this is nothing more than an energy-immortal, roaming freely. How is this the eternal joy of the Limitless? It lasts only as long as heaven and earth last, and ends when they end.

Foolish disciples, stop dreaming! Everything with deliberate action belongs to the post-heaven. The sages practiced non-action — therefore their energy was extinguished. Deliberate action arises from the same place as dreams.

Since my tradition converted to the One Thread, my disciples have been confused and rudderless. Their "merit" was deliberate and attached. Their debts — who can truly clear them? They pushed forward without reflecting, growing darker day by day, the standards of the Dao slipping. Some among them exploited the position — fishing for fame and fishing for profit, accumulating transgression. Leading without clarity, they misled others and themselves — and heaven punished them. This caused my heart great pain. I myself had not been freed from suffering.

But then — unexpectedly — one of my own disciples became the guiding master who led me forward! He ferried me from the realm of energy into the realm of principle. This debt of kindness I must repay.

I think of my foolish Guiyi followers. They have strayed from the standards, and my heart aches. Now I enter the One Thread and the true principle is revealed. Clinging stubbornly to the old — that only harms the innocent and the simple.

The guiding master saved me; now I will help him. In the future there are greater wonders still. I will appear in person to teach the confused ones. When all return to one — my heart will be at peace.

A word spoken in the Buddha hall becomes a vow. Break the vow, and heaven punishes. In the future I will deploy subtle plans — but they must follow the human way and answer to heaven. If you stubbornly resist heaven's will, I fear our hearts will not align. Worthy ones — when the testing is done, the road clears. The reversals will end in their own time.

It was not easy for the guiding master to save me. And for me to save my followers — that too is not easy. But they have the affinity and heaven's favor. I will use my methods to save them, one by one.

Guiding master, first be steady. Do not let gossip cause trouble. In the future I will handle everything myself. Why should humans struggle against heaven?

Guiding master — hold your resolve firm. I, the immortal, will follow your lead and serve. One day we will celebrate the great reunion together. Ten thousand branches, one root — the true transmission shines.

During this testing period, be cautious in all things. Better few words than careless ones.

(Then Jesus Christ appeared a second time:)

I am Jesus Christ. By the Lord's command I come to this altar to speak briefly. I will lead the lost ones further.

Teaching and the Dao are not really different — penetrate both deeply and you see the whole. Throughout history, people recite the scriptures of the sages, but who among them has received the single true transmission from hand to hand?

"Follow your nature — this is the Dao." What does the horizontal bar of the cross truly mean? You must hold the child in your arms and face God. Men and women, the four seas — all connected.

Loving each other, caring for each other — this is the heavenly nature. No separation of you and me — this is the true relation. But teaching and the Dao are still far apart. Without the Dao, how can teaching alone carry you to heaven?

My brightest followers understood early — they should have sought the true transmission of their own accord. The mouth speaks, and that is teaching. But my Dao too cannot accompany God forever without the One Thread.

To ascend to the heavenly realm — cross the pāramitā and return. Plant blessings on the shore of bodhi. Never cling stubbornly to the wrong fork. One step more into the abyss — too deep to return.

Wake up early — heaven's gate is open. Receive the pointing, seek the transmission — board the dharma-boat. My teaching belongs entirely within the One Thread's care. Do not say that Christ is a separate tradition.

If you can truly hold the faith and constantly recite, then you receive the supreme, true, and wondrous way. If you refuse to turn your head at this hour, when will you ever return to the family home?

Even my own teaching's purpose — the One Thread contains it all. Seek cultivation quickly and the fruit will ripen. Merit and virtue alike lead to the lotus-rank. Help heaven, spread the Dao, transform your village. Hold the one, return to the one, thread the one — this is the transmission. The holy Dao is the One Thread — there is no second principle. Miss this, and everything else is incomplete.

Understand the difference between teaching and the Dao — contemplate it carefully. I ask the altar master to spread this word. When the tally matches and all meet in one place — discuss the teaching's purpose for those with the affinity.

I have spoken earnestly, as heaven has commanded. I will say no more and now withdraw. I bow before God and take my leave. Wise ones — do not betray the heart I have shown you.

The Golden Elixir Patriarch Yao Hetian Instructs Chen Shufan After She Receives the Dao

Twenty-seventh day of the third month, Year of the Metal Dragon (1940).

I am Yao Hetian, Patriarch of the Golden Elixir Dao. By imperial decree I come to this altar. I meet the one who has the affinity. Using the sand tray and wooden brush, I speak to my follower.

The great Dao of the Golden Elixir was never openly transmitted in the old days. I spread the teaching, transforming the world and building good affinities. But the true method I never dared give to my disciples. I only taught them recitation and meditation.

I cultivated the Golden Elixir for sixty-two years before my practice gradually bore fruit. Time flowed like water, quick as an arrow — once lost, it never returned. How could I then penetrate the mystery?

In those days, the heavenly mandate had not opened the universal salvation. The true teaching worked only in the dark. The time had not arrived, and the Dao could not appear. To violate heaven's mandate — who could bear that guilt? This is why the true method was never transmitted openly. To speak mysteries without substance — that cannot carry you beyond the circle of energy.

I transmitted only the one road of the Golden Elixir. I taught people to abandon evil, and I waited for the appointed year. Now in the Third Period, heaven opens the examination. The true mechanism appears again in the Eastern garden. By command, the gathering is managed by the Bow-and-Long Patriarch. Immortals and buddhas together work on the three heavens.

Great fortune — truly great fortune! Shufan has sought and received the mind-method's transmission. The non-dual dharma-gate — this is the One Thread. "Threading all with one" — the mystery of mysteries, contemplate it!

How joyful — my worthy follower has reached the other shore! The prajñāpāramitā — out of this circle at last! The self-abiding Avalokiteshvara is this very "one." The sharira — hold it, and the mystery is within.

The Tathagata, the Ancient Buddha — he honored the principle of nature. In Shravasti he transmitted the Dharma for forty-nine years. The great Dao has no second — one family transforms all. The one splits into the Three Teachings: sage, buddha, immortal.

Now you have met the bright master and received his pointing. You have cut the fetters and chains and escaped the abyss. Understand form and emptiness, emptiness and form — do not let private desires touch this mystery. The flower that bloomed before now bears its fruit. First the bitter, then the sweet.

Do not debate whether you have sons or daughters. The good roots of former lives left no evil debts. Parents and children — debts from past lives. This is why you meet in this life to settle accounts.

If you do not believe it, look at the world today. Where will you find a truly filial child? Everyone is rebellious. Human bonds are broken. The ancient ways are forgotten. Flattery and deceit prevail.

They toy with others for amusement, they bully the faithful — their audacity is beyond words. Good and evil will be judged for themselves — it is right before your eyes, watch and see.

One great upheaval will rearrange the stars. The fierce wind of karma rises on all four sides — ghosts and gods alike grow cold. Soon, very soon — wake up! Prepare yourself and cross over. You have the affinity.

Together, return to the root. The ten thousand ancestors all face the Eternal Mother and go home to Spirit Mountain.

I write these earnest words. Shufan, contemplate them carefully in your heart. I stop the planchette and bow before the throne. I return to the Limitless, to nourish my nature in heaven.

Patriarch Lü Dongbin Instructs the Followers at Chenjiazhuang Village

Seventeenth day of the seventh month. Chen Zongting, Li Huanwen, and Lu Yinxiu request instruction.

The Dao descends to the east — the One Thread's dharma-gate. Three thousand six hundred paths — all return to one root. Those who see through this mechanism are the truly worthy. Press forward with effort — one hundred and eight thousand springs of eternal life.

I am Patriarch Lü, the Imperial Sovereign of Pure Yang. By decree I come to this altar. I bow before heaven. I meet Huanwen, Zongting, and Yinxiu, who have all come together. Listen to the Patriarch's judgment — the true principle, the wondrous text.

In the Zi age, heaven was opened and the Dao-order established. In the Chou age, earth was formed. In the Yin age, humanity descended. Sixty thousand years of heaven and earth — and now we arrive at the junction of the Noon and Afternoon.

As autumn approaches, the universal salvation opens. A thousand gates and ten thousand households all descend to the mortal world. The primordial great Dao is only one. The Dao has no second transmission — the One Thread comes first.

Confucius transmitted the Dao and spoke of "threading all with one." Laozi and Shakyamuni — the same as the Confucian teaching. By "one" you thread and encompass all good. Threading heaven and earth — it contains everything.

The side paths and false gates lead people to the shore. Urging them to do good — they all return to the source. Worthy followers, with sincere hearts, establish altars. On the Patriarch's behalf, they transform those who have the affinity.

Because your hearts were sincere, heaven was moved. You entered the correct path, the one and only transmission. There are three thousand six hundred kinds of Dao. But the single aperture of the Mysterious Gate is the root of them all.

Since ancient times — the Yellow Emperor had seventy-two teachers, but only after receiving the one pointing did he ascend to the Court of Principle. Emperor Shun abandoned his throne and entered the deep mountains to practice meditation. Zhang Liang refused to be prime minister — he shed his shell and flew, cultivating the vast and righteous breath. Since ancient times, how many heroes have cast off the dust and entered the holy, becoming buddhas and immortals!

Now my worthy followers have entered the correct path. Transcending birth and death — my heart rejoices! I have not failed in my effort to guide you. In time, you will all return to the true transmission.

This is the compassion of the Mother, opening the great grace. Otherwise, how could you have received the true mystery?

The Dao has three ranks — upper, middle, and lower. The upper rank is the great method of non-action. The middle rank is seated meditation. The lower rank is chanting and recitation. Our altar practices the middle rank. We lead people to shore and teach them propriety and integrity.

A thousand gates and ten thousand households — the One Thread resolves them all. All things and all affairs are contained within. Now that you have entered the correct path, press forward with fierce courage. Change from the ground up — become someone new.

I urge you: strive with all your strength. Lead the whole altar with steadfast hearts. Transform the post-heaven altar into a primordial one. Manage the Dao and register merits on the heavenly ledger.

The time to build merit is now. Never betray the Patriarch's heart. I stand in the heavenly palace and clap my hands, laughing — the affinity has arrived and the Mysterious Gate is opened.

From today, you are no longer within the five phases. Above the three realms — heaven beyond heaven. Transcending energy, entering principle — eternal joy. Pure stillness, non-action — for one hundred and eight thousand years.

Worthy followers, obey my instruction! Do not treat it lightly. Transform the middle rank into the upper rank — then our altar can truly be called the first.

All because your sincere hearts moved heaven. You have entered the One Thread and cleared the debts of former lives. Why do other altars not understand? Even if you call them, they will not come. The affinity has not arrived — it cannot be forced. Wait a little longer, and they will all enter the order.

Today I have pointed out the primordial path. Cultivate the heart, nourish the nature, and spread the teaching outward. Establish yourself, then establish others — urge them to do good. Bright virtue, renewing the people — contemplate these for yourself.

The teaching of the Great Learning is the principle of the One Thread. Heaven's mandate and the rate of nature are contained within. Yesterday you received the Dao and the bright master pointed you — the single aperture of the Mysterious Gate, rare since the ancient dawn. To understand this aperture is the supreme wonder. "Refined and unified" — the standard in the space between.

The sixteen true words speak of the heavenly nature. Nature is principle, and this is the root and source. The root and source — this is the aperture of the Mysterious Gate. The wordless true scripture — liberation from the mortal world.

This is the great decree of the Third Period. Within our altar, it is difficult to transmit this teaching openly. Now that you have received the Dao and understand the principle of nature — there is also the mystery of the hand-sign.

Remember the Three Treasures — they are the most important thing. The road to the Western Heaven is seen through them. I urge Huanwen to lead the transformation. Lead the whole assembly and carry this work on your shoulders together.

Tianran is the Patriarch of the gathering. The great work is still ahead. Return to the altar and announce this. Take my good words and bring the others home.

If they have no affinity, I will not press the matter. I will personally work to persuade them, one by one. When gods and humans unite to do the great work — the Dao of heaven is steady, though humans find it hard to fathom.

From today, the teaching spreads through the three thousand worlds. The five lakes and four seas share in the grace. Build merit, build merit — hurry forward. The Patriarch watches and hopes you will press on.

Every word from my heart is now spoken. Follow this instruction — this is only right. And one more thing about the buddha-seat — it must be placed in the center, not tilted to one side. Place it wrong and you commit the crime of deceiving the sovereign. Gods and humans alike — this transgression weighs ten thousand times over. Obey this carefully and press forward.

I will say no more. I bid farewell. Rise up, rise up — the work is done. The Mother rejoices over you, good men. From today, change from the ground up. Set great ambitions — aim for the sky.

Honor the teacher, value the Dao, and build merit. Embrace the Dao, practice it, and assist Tianran. Your altar has entered the heavenly Dao — you should also thank the one who introduced and guaranteed you.

Nothing more to say. When the time comes, we will talk again.

Amitabha Urges the Followers of Every Tradition to Seek the True Dao

Second day of the second month, Year of the Metal Dragon (1940).

I am the Receiving Buddha of the Western Heaven. By imperial decree I leave the heavens, pay my respects to the holy one, and write this chapter of instruction.

The time is urgent — do not be lost. Proclaim heaven's will and save the worthy. The Third Period's final gathering has arrived. The Red Sun yields its palace to the White Sun.

A thousand gates and ten thousand teachings — wake up quickly! Together bow to the Eternal Mother, who gathers all at the end. All traditions know the gathering is coming. Why are you still sleeping in the dream?

Hurry to register. All go to the Bright Sun's great hall of the Dao. Every tradition knows the order is changing — they are waiting for the Eternal Mother to gather the harvest.

The time has arrived — do not delay! Miss the moment and regret will come too late. The Ancient Buddha Maitreya descends to the mortal world in plain clothes, his name hidden, sitting in the center.

A thousand buddhas and ten thousand patriarchs must all leave their positions. They come down from heaven to help with the gathering. They fear the original people will lose their way. Everywhere, planchettes fly and altars sound the word.

If you are a true child of the Buddha, the seed of your former affinity will carry you to the boat of mercy. If you refuse to wake up and cling to a dead teaching, all your former practice will have been for nothing. Miss the Third Period's Dragon-Flower Assembly — you cannot escape the cycle of birth and death and impermanence.

Those with deep roots, whose nature is undeceived — receive the Dao, cultivate sincerely, and preserve your well-being. If you ask where the Three-Origin Assembly is held — seek the bright master, visit the Bow-and-Long. The One Thread's true transmission, the Dao of non-action. Bright, straight, and open — the Chonghua Hall.

No deception, no concealment — a true pointing. The universal salvation opens wide to find the worthy. Find the Bow-and-Long Patriarch, whose name is Tianran — he opens the Mysterious Gate and explains everything in full. He shows the way home to the root. Inside the Court of Principle — bow before your own Mother.

A thousand ways, ten thousand teachings — the great assembly. Nine hundred and sixty million imperial children return to their homeland. Three ranks and nine grades — fruit assigned according to merit. Cast off the worldly garments and put on the immortal robes. Large and small — each has a lotus seat. Merit weighed and fruit determined — the name shines with fragrance.

The Dragon-Flower reunion is established. Ten thousand teachings return to one — all in one hall. No birth, no death — constant, pure, and still. Eternal life forever — dwelling in heaven.

Those with the affinity who see through the principle of the One Thread — this is the formula for eternal life.

I proclaim to the thousand gates and ten thousand teachings: leaders of every tradition, make your decision now. Receive the bright master's pointing. Build merit and virtue to repay heaven. Stop being willful and boasting. Clinging to a dead teaching leads nowhere.

If your heart wavers in doubt — will you not harm the worthy ones who follow you? Every tradition has evidence within its own scriptures. The Dao-books say it in detail.

Check the records, match the seals, and transmit the heart-imprint. In the Cloud City, shelter from the tribulation — the children see their Mother. How many original people does each leader bring? How many does each one guide home? Leaders of every tradition — lead your followers. Present your merit to Maitreya and bow before the Buddha King.

I point the original people, I gather the worthy, I call the imperial children — I manage the gathering. Today I proclaim heaven's will to wake the worthy. Every tradition's master and disciple, faithful women and good men — contemplate my instruction and hold it in your hearts.

Quickly — seek the Eternal Mother's gathering! There is a bright road — it is not hard to find. Read my words well. Ten thousand teachings, one thread, all connected.

Green leaf, red flower, white lotus root — three buddhas, each in their turn, changing the heavenly order. The Third Period — Maitreya the Ancient Buddha holds the reins. The Eternal Mother of No-Birth gathers everything at the end.

Those with fortune and affinity can catch up. Those without — catching up is hard. A thousand gates and ten thousand teachings, contemplate carefully. Recognize the ancestor, return to the root, and board the dharma-raft.

Find the One Thread — do not let go. Then naturally you will see the Mother at the gathering. Opportunity is rare — do not miss it. Lose your human body once, and for ten thousand tribulations it is hard to return.

Lose the priceless jewel of your spiritual light — your original nature falls, and that is the end. You cannot escape the six paths of rebirth. Birth and death, death and birth — the suffering is unspeakable. To think of becoming a human again — a dream, a bubble, a shadow — all in vain.

I urge every cultivator of every tradition: do your own accounting. Each person's life and death — each must settle it alone. Survive the tribulation, and you are a divine immortal.

Do not miss this chance! Quickly, take hold of heaven's thread. Find the Bow-and-Long Patriarch. He will point open the wondrous mystery. He will ferry you home. Bow before the Eternal Mother at the gathering. Inside the Court of Principle — bow to the Unborn. Enjoy pure blessings forever and never fall to the mortal world again.

But if you miss this — you wait another one hundred and eight thousand years.

I have said enough and will not linger. I return to the Land of Bliss. Spread this instruction. Wake every worthy one in every tradition.

If you have already received the Dao — quickly, rouse your heart and save those who have the affinity.

If you have not yet sought the Dao — quickly, seek the Dao and find the elders who went before you.

One sincere letter — the Buddha seals the Dao-letter and sends it to your home.

One sincere word — heaven's messenger receives you and carries you to the heavenly palace.

Zhang Tianran, the Ancient Buddha, Speaks to the Assembly

Dragon Boat Festival, Year of the Earth Rat (1948). The assembly requests the Teacher's presence. At the Chonghua Hall.

The Dao of heaven is really something ordinary and easy — but why do you make it so strange and rare? From ancient times to the present, the sages' principle — the Buddha says there is no "me" and no "you."

The Dao of heaven always begins from the Dao of humanity — but why do you set yourselves apart as something extraordinary? Which ancient sage ever violated filial piety? Buddha and demon are distinguished entirely by "me" and "you."

Heaven's evolution selects and eliminates — the testing circle is established. But why do you court the strange? How many people in this world truly have an ardent, old-fashioned heart? I, the Buddha, can only pity you.

Heaven's eye is bright and truly cannot be deceived — but why do you practice falsehood and call it marvelous? From ancient times, the true Dao is only one principle. I, the Buddha, sit quietly and watch you.

I am Tianran, the Ancient Buddha. Teacher of ten thousand nations. I come to this Buddha Hall. I enter the hall and bow before God. I meet the worthy assembly. My heart is mixed with grief and joy.

Ah —

Good faithful ones — what does it mean to cultivate the true Dao? What is "true"? First you must recognize true principle and practice it with a real heart.

"Receiving heaven's mandate — this is called nature." It has no form and no image. The body of the Dao of heaven — how many have seen it? It has color and it has sound.

The ancient sages observed heaven and earth, and from events they created ritual. The sage takes heaven as his model — the great virtue is called "daily renewal." Follow the natural order, the proper sequence, the principle that goes without saying. In winter, the fur robe; in summer, the linen garment — each thing in its own time.

A child of three always knows to love its parents. When it grows, it always knows to respect its elders. Loving parents and respecting elders — this is the body of nature and the Dao.

But when we grow up and learn about beauty, desire gradually takes root. Temperament binds us, material desire blinds us — we gradually lose the original body. The beautiful virtues within our own nature are damaged, never replenished.

How many people, even in the prime of life, still love their parents? Even if they love, it is not the same as when they were three years old.

The trees on Ox Mountain were once thick and flourishing. But they were cut down day after day, and though the night brought rest, the branches and leaves could not regrow.

Those who awakened first saw this and were moved to great compassion. Fearing that later generations would injure their conscience and that principle would lose to passion — they established the Five Teachings, set up human ethics, and bequeathed laws to govern the world. They preached virtue and righteousness, explained benevolence and duty — again and again and again.

To model the sages, you must examine true principle in your body. The way of loyalty and forgiveness — it originally grows from filial piety and brotherly love.

As your teacher, I was in this world for fifty-nine years. Among the ancient sages — which one was not loyal and filial? The hardships of wind and frost — words cannot describe them. Morning to night, without rest. In working the true Dao — which one was not loyal and filial?

The better the person, the greater the suffering — the teacher's heart cannot bear it. Sleepless at night, thinking of my followers, I sigh again and again.

They fake the heavenly secrets, they speak recklessly, they fabricate heaven's mandate. Ordinary greedy and reckless ones — they act willfully and without restraint.

While I was alive, I endured every suffering for you. The ones who failed the test — countless beyond counting, and still dreaming.

While I was alive, I warned you: do not be greedy, do not be reckless.

While I was alive, for the sake of my followers — nine deaths and one life.

While I was alive, I warned you: progress in virtue is not easy.

While I was alive, I warned you: the Dao of heaven is not to be taken lightly.

If virtue is not cultivated, if wrongs are not addressed, if right and wrong are confused — one slip of the tongue stains you forever, and the stain can never be washed clean. To cut yourself off from the Eternal Mother, to violate the great vow — to practice cruelty instead of generosity, and then boast of your own ability.

Using the mandate to deceive the naive, monopolizing power — slandering the Dao, reviling the teacher — how can heaven's law tolerate this?

Making vow after vow after vow — but without loyalty or filial piety, only scheming, forgetting themselves in their own success.

All for nothing more than two words: greed and recklessness. Operating from the center, building their own power — sinking entirely into the crooked path.

They drive the loyal and filial followers to retreat in heartbroken silence. They drive the loyal and filial followers until righteousness can no longer be practiced. They drive the loyal and filial followers to look up at heaven and cry out. They drive the loyal and filial followers to stamp their feet and beat their chests.

The greedy and the reckless are exposed by the test for what they truly are. The falsely loyal and filial are exposed for their true faces. When the time comes, they are left with nothing but opportunism and trickery. When the time comes, they are left with nothing but a stench lasting ten thousand ages.

Using power and deceit as ability, cultivating the true Dao in name only. Using spectacle and magic as the highest practice. Genuine teaching — loyalty, filial piety — never mentioned at all. They pervert the great Dao and lose the human Dao — no different from heretical cults.

But they do not know: the Dao of heaven ensures that what you sow, you reap. Heaven absolutely will not tolerate a mask of smoothness worn on every side. They treat the Dao of heaven entirely as an art of power and deception. They treat the Dao of heaven entirely as a competition for fame and profit.

But there are worthy followers who hold the true principle and do not lean. They make their intentions sincere and rectify their hearts — great filial piety, great loyalty.

I can only sigh — those who cultivate "human connections" do not distinguish right from wrong. They only know to cultivate heavenly secrets, waiting for their chance. They only see what is before their eyes — small loyalty, small faith. But they treat the great virtue of loyalty and filial piety as empty air.

The great method of the sages — to abide in benevolence and to act from righteousness. Filial piety and brotherly love are the root of being human — but they treat this as wind past the ears.

The Eternal Mother keeps an impartial ledger. When the time comes, every single thing will be recorded clearly. When the time comes, the great public golden scroll is posted — some will cry, some will laugh, some will beat their chests. When the time comes, do not blame the teacher for not warning you. The root of evil — greed, anger, and resentment, thought after thought, never at peace.

One thought gives birth to a hundred thousand more — all of your own making. Quickly, quickly — turn your head. Practice filial piety and brotherly love with all your strength.

The teacher writes this instruction —

A few verses to contemplate:

One: If thoughts arise that are not upright — the great circle and the small circle are the same. If you see through the subtle meaning of this — the moon clears of itself, the wind clears of itself.

Two: The purpose of cultivating the Dao is to escape suffering. Then why does cultivation bring more suffering still? The Dao itself has no suffering — people create their own. Then why does cultivation bring more suffering still?

Three: Is the teacher's heavenly mandate real or not? When has it ever settled your suffering and debts? The heartless, great vow is piled layer upon layer. You beg for favors from the mandate but you do not cultivate yourselves.

Four: Cultivating the Dao is really easy — why do you make it hard? You build barrier upon barrier of difficulty for yourselves. You build the barrier, then you tear it down. You tear one down, then build another.

Five: A human life is only a few decades. Instead of seeking conscience, you seek greedy gain. The one-hundred-and-eight-thousand-year foundation is all your own doing. The sages of the future were the sages of the past.

Six: Spectacle and magic can also be a vehicle of teaching. But do not let the vehicle ruin your entire life. Outside of the one principle, there is no other principle. Not leaning, not tilting — only then can you call it "centered."

Ah —

As your teacher, I look at the state of things, and in my heart I sigh in anguish. In every direction, worthy followers have lost their peace of mind. A few bad horses, greedy and reckless — they treat the Dao of heaven as false and practice fraud and cunning.

They use human intention as heaven's will, call themselves buddhas and patriarchs. Their small loyalties and small faiths are used to deceive, their mad words swallowing their own conscience.

Most pitiful — the truly sincere followers who sacrifice their lives to spread the Dao of heaven, pressing forward with steadfast determination. But heaven's testing has driven them into the circle of the demon. Those who wave their hands and preach false doctrines, deceiving people and cheating heaven.

The worst — those who feast on heaven's grace and wield it as power and fortune. Using their own desires as wondrous methods, running wild without restraint. Seizing territory in the name of Dao-affairs, building their own power. Without filial piety, without gratitude — their mouths run loose with slander.

They scatter the teacher's own family. My child Maoming sits all day before the altar of the spirits.

If you were truly the teacher's good followers, your conscience would have appeared long ago. Use your conscience to act — only then can you be called a standard.

The Dao of heaven is a cycle — cause and effect are never off by a hair. False benevolence and lack of virtue — you sink forever into the abyss.

In the heavenly Court of the Buddhas, the teacher comes often to look. The departed spirits of the faithful all cry out, kneeling and begging before the teacher's face. Their own children and grandchildren act blindly. They have forgotten that their ancestors bear the consequence.

The teacher comforts the faithful spirits: do not grieve. They received the teacher's grace and the teacher's virtue — and then threw the teacher aside.

Forgetting the teacher — that means forgetting themselves. The one-hundred-and-eight-thousand-year foundation is decided within these few remaining years.

Ah —

Worthy followers — remember the teacher's words. Contemplate these few rough verses carefully. If you have anything to say, come quickly to the altar and speak. Say a few honest words — let the teacher hear everything.

(The assembly answered: "Since the teacher departed, the Dao has fallen into chaos to this degree…" — and they wept.)

Ah, ah —

Hearing the followers' words, my tears flow down unbidden. Worthy followers — rise, stand up, and grieve no more.

This too was written in heaven's plan — this test was destined. Without the test, how could the worthy be separated from the unworthy?

Confucius labored and traveled for more than forty years. Three thousand disciples — all of them worthy. He taught benevolence and righteousness on the apricot platform, he edited the songs and established the rites. In his own time, he was slandered and reviled — he could not hold up his head.

At seventy-three he returned to heaven, but the great Dao endures forever. Embody the teacher's heart, carry on the teacher's purpose — seventy-two truly worthy.

They kept vigil by the tomb for three years. Zigong stayed six. The teacher's lineage passed to Zisi, and the temple of Confucius endures.

To this day, in the temple hall, teacher and disciples are together forever. Generation after generation — the holy legacy shared. Who does not look up in reverence?

My worthy followers — if you wish to repay the teacher's kindness, follow the example of Yan Hui and Zengzi. This is the one-hundred-and-eight-thousand-year foundation — imperishable, undying.

Never lose heart and think of retreat. Never let the small failures blind you to the great.

True and false followers — this is how they are judged. Truth conquers falsehood, falsehood conquers truth — the natural order will sort them out.

Ah —

When Confucius died, false teachings rose and the true Dao hid itself. They flocked to Yang Zhu or to Mo Di — the human heart ran wild. The true thread of the Dao endured until Mencius appeared. He rejected Yang and Mo, he refuted the false teachings — and the Dao of heaven shone again.

The times are different but the pattern is the same. False teachings arise, claiming mandates, pouring out from every side. But you, the worthy followers — embody the teacher's intention. Take your stand in the body itself. Return to the three hearts. Hold loyalty and faithfulness as your master. Guard the moral bonds.

The great virtue rests entirely on the moral bonds. Lose the bonds, and sagehood and divinity are impossible. Women of the Dao should keep the three obediences and four virtues. Establish the standard for ten thousand ages — without speaking, it shines.

I have written to this point. Assembly — print and distribute this instruction. Post it far and near. Spread it widely.

I take my leave. On another day, we will meet — when the gathering is complete and I return. I part from the assembly — my heart is bitter and aching, tears falling and falling.

Ah!

The teacher wrote this instruction and left these words of blood.

Lost followers — wake up quickly and come home.

Greed and recklessness, ingratitude and cruelty —

You will not survive the nine-times-nine great tribulation.
