Hymn to the Immaculate One — Yasht 5 of the Avesta
The fifth and one of the longest Yashts of the Avesta — the great hymn to Aredvi Sura Anahita, whose name means "the Mighty, the Immaculate, the Moist One." She is the goddess of all the waters upon the earth, the purifier of seed and womb, the cosmic river that flows from the heights of Mount Hukairya to the sea Vouru-Kasha. Kings and heroes sacrifice to her — some are granted their boons, others refused. The wicked Azi Dahaka, the Turanian Frangrasyan, and the sons of Vaesaka all beg her favor and are denied. She appears in the shape of a fair maid, strong-armed and high-girdled, wearing a golden crown of a hundred stars and a cloak of thirty beaver skins. She is at once the waters of the world and their guardian — cosmic force and personal goddess, answering prayer and splitting rivers for the faithful.
Section I — The Command to Worship
1. Ahura Mazda spoke to Spitama Zarathushtra, saying:
Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita,
the wide-expanding, the healing,
the foe of the daevas, the upholder of the Law of Ahura,
worthy of sacrifice in the world of the living,
worthy of prayer in the world of the living,
the life-increasing and holy,
the herd-increasing and holy,
the fold-increasing and holy,
the wealth-increasing and holy,
the land-increasing and holy.
2. She who purifies the seed of all men,
who purifies the wombs of all women for bringing forth,
who grants all women safe delivery,
who places milk in the breasts of all women
in the right measure and the right quality.
3. The great river, known from afar,
who is as great as all the waters
that flow upon the earth —
she who runs with power
from the heights of Hukairya
down to the sea Vouru-Kasha.
4. All the shores of the sea Vouru-Kasha are set boiling,
all the middle of it is set boiling,
when she flows down,
when she streams down —
she, Aredvi Sura Anahita,
who has a thousand tributaries
and a thousand channels,
and the span of each of those tributaries,
of each of those channels,
is a forty-day ride on a good horse.
5. From this river of mine alone
flow all the waters that spread
over the seven lands.
This river of mine alone brings waters
in summer and in winter alike.
This river of mine purifies the seed of men,
the wombs of women,
the milk in women's breasts.
6. I, Ahura Mazda, brought her down with mighty strength
for the increase of the house, the village,
the district, the land —
to keep and maintain them,
to watch over them and guard them.
7. Then Aredvi Sura Anahita set forth, O Spitama Zarathushtra,
from the Maker Mazda.
Beautiful were her white arms,
thick as a horse's shoulder, or still thicker.
Beautiful was she —
she came forth strong, with thick arms,
thinking thus in her heart:
8. "Who will praise me?
Who will offer me sacrifice
with libations cleanly prepared and well-strained,
together with Haoma and meat?
To whom shall I cleave,
who cleaves to me
and thinks with me
and bestows gifts upon me
and is of good will toward me?"
9. For her radiance and glory I will offer her
a sacrifice worthy of being heard.
I will offer to the holy Aredvi Sura Anahita
a good sacrifice with libations.
Thus may you counsel us when we call upon you!
May you be most fully worshipped,
O Aredvi Sura Anahita,
with Haoma and meat, with the sacred bundle,
with the wisdom of the tongue, with the holy words,
with speech and deeds and libations,
with rightly spoken words.
Section II — The Chariot
10. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita,
the wide-expanding and healing,
the foe of the daevas, the upholder of the Law of Ahura,
worthy of sacrifice and prayer in the world of the living,
the life-increasing, herd-increasing, fold-increasing,
wealth-increasing, land-increasing, and holy.
11. She who drives forth upon her chariot,
holding the reins of the chariot.
She drives, longing for men,
thinking thus in her heart:
"Who will praise me?
Who will offer me sacrifice
with libations cleanly prepared and well-strained,
together with Haoma and meat?
To whom shall I cleave,
who cleaves to me
and thinks with me
and bestows gifts upon me
and is of good will toward me?"
For her radiance and glory I will offer her a sacrifice worthy of being heard.
Section III — The Four White Horses
12. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
13. Whom four horses carry —
all white, of one color, of the same blood,
tall, crushing the hatred of all haters,
of daevas and men, of sorcerers and witches,
of the oppressors, the blind and the deaf.
For her radiance and glory I will offer her a sacrifice worthy of being heard.
Section IV — Her Strength
14. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
15. Strong and bright, tall and beautiful of form,
she who by day and by night
sends down a flow of motherly waters
as great as all the waters
that flow upon the earth —
she who runs with power.

Section V — Ahura Mazda's Sacrifice
16. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
17. To her did the Maker, Ahura Mazda, offer sacrifice
in the Airyana Vaejah, by the good river Daitya,
with Haoma and meat, with the sacred bundle,
with the wisdom of the tongue, with the holy words,
with speech and deeds and libations,
with rightly spoken words.
18. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may bring the son of Pourushaspa,
the holy Zarathushtra,
to think according to the Law,
to speak according to the Law,
to act according to the Law."
19. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.
For her radiance and glory I will offer her a sacrifice worthy of being heard.
Section VI — Haoshyangha's Sacrifice
20. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
21. To her did Haoshyangha, the First Lawgiver,
offer sacrifice upon the enclosure of the Hara,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
22. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may become the sovereign lord of all lands,
of daevas and men, of sorcerers and witches,
of the oppressors, the blind and the deaf —
that I may smite down two-thirds
of the daevas of Mazana
and the fiends of Varena."
23. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.
For her radiance and glory I will offer her a sacrifice worthy of being heard.
Section VII — Yima's Sacrifice
24. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
25. To her did Yima Khshaeta, the Good Shepherd,
offer sacrifice from the heights of Hukairya,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
26. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may become the sovereign lord of all lands,
of daevas and men, of sorcerers and witches,
of the oppressors, the blind and the deaf —
that I may take from the daevas
both riches and welfare,
both fatness and flocks,
both weal and glory."
27. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.
For her radiance and glory I will offer her a sacrifice worthy of being heard.
Section VIII — Azi Dahaka's Sacrifice
28. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
29. To her did Azi Dahaka, the three-mouthed,
offer sacrifice in the land of Bawri,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
30. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may make all the seven lands empty of men."
31. Aredvi Sura Anahita did not grant him that boon.

Section IX — Thraetaona's Sacrifice
32. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
33. To her did Thraetaona, of the valiant house of Athwya,
offer sacrifice in the four-cornered Varena,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
34. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may overcome Azi Dahaka,
the three-mouthed, the three-headed, the six-eyed,
who has a thousand senses,
that most powerful fiendish Lie,
that demon baleful to the world,
the strongest Lie that Angra Mainyu created
against the world of the living
to destroy the world of Righteousness —
and that I may deliver his two wives,
Savanghavach and Erenavach,
who are the fairest of body among women
and the most wonderful creatures in the world."
35. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.

Section X — Keresaspa's Sacrifice
36. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
37. To her did Keresaspa, the manly-hearted,
offer sacrifice behind the Vairi Pisanah,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
38. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may overcome the golden-heeled Gandarewa,
though all the shores of the sea Vouru-Kasha boil over —
and that I may run up to the stronghold of the fiend
on the wide, round earth whose ends lie afar."
39. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.

Section XI — Frangrasyan's Sacrifice
40. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
41. To her did the Turanian murderer Frangrasyan
offer sacrifice in his cave beneath the earth,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
42. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may seize hold of that Glory
which waves in the middle of the sea Vouru-Kasha,
that belongs to the Aryan peoples,
to those born and those not yet born,
and to the holy Zarathushtra."
43. Aredvi Sura Anahita did not grant him that boon.

Section XII — Kavi Usa's Sacrifice
44. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
45. To her did the great and most wise Kavi Usa
offer sacrifice from Mount Erezifya,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
46. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may become the sovereign lord of all lands,
of daevas and men, of sorcerers and witches,
of the oppressors, the blind and the deaf."
47. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.

Section XIII — Husravah's Sacrifice
48. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
49. To her did the gallant Husravah,
he who united the Aryan peoples into one kingdom,
offer sacrifice behind the deep lake Chaechasta,
the lake of salt waters,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
50. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may become the sovereign lord of all lands,
of daevas and men, of sorcerers and witches,
of the oppressors, the blind and the deaf —
and that I may have the lead in front of all the teams,
and that he may not pass through the forest,
that murderer who now strives fiercely
against me on horseback."
51. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.
For her radiance and glory I will offer her a sacrifice worthy of being heard.
Section XIV — Tusa's Sacrifice
52. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
53. To her did the valiant warrior Tusa
offer worship from the back of his horse,
begging swiftness for his teams, health for his own body,
and that he might watch with full success those who hated him,
smite down his foes, and destroy at one stroke
his adversaries and enemies and those who hated him.
54. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may overcome the gallant sons of Vaesaka
by the castle Khshathro-saoka
that stands high up on the lofty, holy Kangha —
that I may smite of the Turanian peoples
their fifties and their hundreds,
their hundreds and their thousands,
their thousands and their tens of thousands,
their tens of thousands and their myriads of myriads."
55. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.

Section XV — The Sons of Vaesaka
56. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
57. To her did the gallant sons of Vaesaka
offer sacrifice in the castle Khshathro-saoka,
that stands high up on the lofty, holy Kangha,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
58. They begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant us this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that we may overcome the valiant warrior Tusa,
and that we may smite of the Aryan peoples
their fifties and their hundreds,
their hundreds and their thousands,
their thousands and their tens of thousands,
their tens of thousands and their myriads of myriads."
59. Aredvi Sura Anahita did not grant them that boon.
For her radiance and glory I will offer her a sacrifice worthy of being heard.
Section XVI — The Rescue of Vafra Navaza
60. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
61. The old Vafra Navaza worshipped her
when the strong fiend-smiter Thraetaona
flung him up into the air in the shape of a bird, a vulture.
62. He went flying for three days and three nights
toward his own house, but he could not turn down.
At the end of the third night,
when the dawn rose bright,
he prayed to Aredvi Sura Anahita, saying:
63. "Aredvi Sura Anahita!
Hasten quickly and bring me help at once!
I will offer you a thousand libations,
cleanly prepared and well-strained,
with Haoma and meat,
by the banks of the river Rangha,
if I reach alive the earth made by Ahura
and my own house."
64. Aredvi Sura Anahita hastened to him
in the shape of a maid — fair of body,
most strong, tall of form, high-girdled,
pure, nobly born of a glorious race,
wearing shoes to the ankle,
wearing a golden ornament, and radiant.
65. She seized him by the arm.
Quickly was it done, nor was it long
before, speeding, he arrived
at the earth made by Mazda and his own house —
safe, unhurt, unwounded,
just as he was before.
66. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.

Section XVII — Jamaspa's Sacrifice
67. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
68. To her did Jamaspa offer sacrifice,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs,
when he saw the army of the wicked,
of the worshippers of the daevas,
coming from afar in battle array.
69. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may be as constantly victorious
as any one of all the Aryans."
70. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.

Section XVIII — Ashavazdah's Sacrifice
71. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
72. To her did Ashavazdah, son of Pourudhakhshti,
and Ashavazdah and Thrita, sons of Sayuzhdri,
offer sacrifice by Apam Napat,
the tall lord, lord of the females,
the bright and swift-horsed —
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
73. They begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant us this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that we may overcome the assemblers
of the Turanian Danus —
Kara Asabana and Vara Asabana
and the most mighty Duraekaeta —
in the battles of this world."
74. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted them that boon,
as they were offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant them that boon.

Section XIX — Vistauru's River Crossing
75. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
76. Vistauru, son of Naotara, worshipped her
by the banks of the river Vitanghuhaiti,
with rightly spoken words, speaking thus:
77. "This is true, this is truly spoken —
that I have smitten as many of the worshippers of the daevas
as the hairs I bear upon my head.
Do you then, O Aredvi Sura Anahita,
leave me a dry passage
to cross the good Vitanghuhaiti."
78. Aredvi Sura Anahita hastened to him
in the shape of a maid — fair of body,
most strong, tall of form, high-girdled,
pure, nobly born of a glorious race,
wearing a golden ornament, all-adorned and radiant.
She made part of the waters stand still,
she made part of the waters flow forward,
and she left him a dry passage
to cross the good Vitanghuhaiti.
79. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.

Section XX — Yoishta's Sacrifice
80. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
81. To her did Yoishta, one of the Fryanas,
offer sacrifice upon the Pedvaepa of the Rangha,
with a hundred stallions, a thousand oxen,
and ten thousand lambs.
82. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may overcome the evil Akhtya,
the offspring of darkness,
and that I may answer the ninety-nine hard riddles
that he asks me maliciously —
the evil Akhtya, the offspring of darkness."
83. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted him that boon,
as he was offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant him that boon.

Section XXI — The Descent of Anahita
84. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
85. Whom Ahura Mazda the merciful commanded thus, saying:
"Come, O Aredvi Sura Anahita,
come down from those stars to the earth made by Ahura,
that the great lords may worship you,
the masters of the lands and their sons.
86. "The men of strength will beg of you
swift horses and the supremacy of Glory.
"The priests who read the sacred texts
and the pupils of the priests
will beg of you knowledge and prosperity,
the Victory made by Ahura
and the crushing Ascendant.
87. "The maids of barren womb, longing for a husband,
will beg of you a strong lord of the house.
"Women on the point of bringing forth
will beg of you a safe delivery.
"All this will you grant to them,
as it lies in your power,
O Aredvi Sura Anahita!"
88. Then Aredvi Sura Anahita came forth, O Zarathushtra,
down from those stars to the earth made by Mazda.
And Aredvi Sura Anahita spoke thus:
89. "O pure and holy Zarathushtra!
Ahura Mazda has established you
as master of the world of the living.
Ahura Mazda has established me
to keep the whole of the holy creation.
"Through my radiance and glory
flocks and herds and two-legged men go on upon the earth.
I, in truth, keep all good things made by Mazda,
offspring of the holy principle,
even as a shepherd keeps his flock."
90. Zarathushtra asked Aredvi Sura Anahita:
"O Aredvi Sura Anahita!
With what manner of sacrifice shall I worship you?
With what manner of sacrifice shall I worship and advance you?
So that Mazda may make you flow down to the earth,
that he may not make you flow up to the heavens above the sun,
and that the Serpent may not harm you
with venom and with poison."
91. Aredvi Sura Anahita answered:
"O pure and holy Spitama!
This is the sacrifice with which you shall worship me,
this is the sacrifice with which you shall worship and advance me —
from the rising of the sun to the setting of the sun.
"Of this libation of mine you shall drink,
you who are a priest,
who have asked and learned the revealed Law,
who are wise and skillful and the Word made flesh.
92. "Of this libation of mine let no foe drink —
no man struck with fever, no liar, no coward, no jealous one,
no woman, no unfaithful one who does not sing the Gathas,
no leper to be confined.
93. "I do not accept those libations
that are drunk in my honor
by the blind, the deaf, the wicked, the destroyers, the niggards,
nor any of those stamped with marks
that have no strength for the Holy Word.
Let no one drink of these my libations
who is hump-backed or misshapen,
no fiend with rotted teeth."
94. Then Zarathushtra asked Aredvi Sura Anahita:
"O Aredvi Sura Anahita!
What becomes of those libations
which the wicked worshippers of the daevas
bring to you after the sun has set?"
95. Aredvi Sura Anahita answered:
"O pure and holy Spitama Zarathushtra!
Howling, clapping, hopping, and shrieking,
six hundred and a thousand daevas
who ought not to receive that sacrifice
receive those libations
that men bring to me after the sun has set."
96. I will worship the heights of Hukairya,
of the deep precipices, made of gold,
from which my Aredvi Sura Anahita leaps
from a hundred times the height of a man,
while she possesses as much Glory
as all the waters that flow upon the earth —
and she runs with power.

Section XXII — The Hvovas and the Naotaras
97. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
98. Before whom the worshippers of Mazda stand
with the sacred bundle in their hands.
The Hvovas worshipped her, the Naotaras worshipped her.
The Hvovas asked for riches,
the Naotaras asked for swift horses.
Quickly was Hvova blessed with riches and full prosperity.
Quickly did Vishtaspa, of the house of Naotara,
become the lord of the swiftest horses in these lands.
99. Aredvi Sura Anahita granted them that boon,
as they were offering libations, giving gifts,
sacrificing and entreating that she would grant them that boon.
For her radiance and glory I will offer her a sacrifice worthy of being heard.
Section XXIII — The Thousand Palaces
100. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
101. She who has a thousand tributaries and a thousand channels —
the span of each of those tributaries,
of each of those channels,
is a forty-day ride on a good horse.
In each channel there stands a palace,
well-founded, shining with a hundred windows,
with a thousand columns, well-built,
with ten thousand balconies, and mighty.
102. In each of those palaces
there lies a well-laid, well-scented bed
covered with pillows.
And Aredvi Sura Anahita, O Zarathushtra,
runs down from a thousand times the height of a man,
and she possesses as much Glory
as all the waters that flow upon the earth —
and she runs with power.

Section XXIV — Zarathushtra's Sacrifice
103. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
104. To her did the holy Zarathushtra offer sacrifice
in the Airyana Vaejah, by the good river Daitya,
with Haoma and meat, with the sacred bundle,
with the wisdom of the tongue, with the holy words,
with speech and deeds and libations,
with rightly spoken words.
105. He begged of her a boon, saying:
"Grant me this, O good and most beneficent
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
that I may bring the son of Aurvat-aspa,
the valiant Kavi Vishtaspa,
to think according to the Law,
to speak according to the Law,

Humayaka the worshipper of the daevas,
and the wicked Arejat-aspa,

that we may conquer the valiant Kavi Vishtaspa
and Zairi-vairi who fights on horseback,
and that we may smite of the Aryan peoples

their thousands and their tens of thousands,
their tens of thousands and their myriads of myriads."

Section XXVIII — The Four Horses of the Sky

120. For whom Ahura Mazda has made four horses —
the Wind, the Rain, the Cloud, and the Sleet —
and thus ever upon the earth
it is raining, snowing, hailing, and sleeting.
And her armies are so many,
numbered by nine-hundreds and thousands.
121. I will worship the heights of Hukairya,
of the deep precipices, made of gold,
from which my Aredvi Sura Anahita leaps
from a hundred times the height of a man,
while she possesses as much Glory
as all the waters that flow upon the earth —
and she runs with power.

Section XXIX — The Golden Mantle
122. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
123. She stands, the good Aredvi Sura Anahita,
wearing a golden mantle,
waiting for a man who shall offer her libations and sacrifice,
thinking thus in her heart:
124. "Who will praise me?
Who will offer me sacrifice
with libations cleanly prepared and well-strained,
together with Haoma and meat?
To whom shall I cleave,
who cleaves to me
and thinks with me
and bestows gifts upon me
and is of good will toward me?"

Section XXX — The Appearance of Anahita
125. Offer sacrifice to her, O Spitama Zarathushtra —
to Aredvi Sura Anahita, the holy, the land-increasing.
126. Aredvi Sura Anahita, who stands carried forth
in the shape of a maid — fair of body,
most strong, tall of form, high-girdled,
pure, nobly born of a glorious race —
wearing a mantle fully embroidered with gold.
127. Ever holding the sacred bundle in her hand according to the rites,
she wears square golden earrings on her pierced ears
and a golden necklace around her beautiful neck.
She, the nobly born Aredvi Sura Anahita,
girds her waist tightly
that her breasts may be well-shaped,
that they may be tightly pressed.
128. Upon her head Aredvi Sura Anahita binds
a golden crown with a hundred stars, with eight rays —
a fine and well-made crown,
with fillets streaming down.
129. She is clothed in garments of beaver,
Aredvi Sura Anahita —
the skins of thirty beavers,
of those that bear four young,
the finest kind of beavers.
For the skin of the beaver that lives in water
is the finest-colored of all skins,
and when worked at the right time
it shines to the eye
with full sheen of silver and gold.
130. Here, O good and most beneficent Aredvi Sura Anahita,
I beg of you this favor:
that I, fully blessed, may conquer great kingdoms
rich in horses, with high tributes,
with snorting horses, sounding chariots, flashing swords,
rich in food, with well-scented beds —
that I may have at my wish
the fullness of the good things of life
and whatever makes a kingdom thrive.
131. Here, O good and most beneficent Aredvi Sura Anahita,
I beg of you two gallant companions —
one two-legged and one four-legged.
One two-legged, who is swift,
quickly rushing and clever
in turning a chariot round in battle.
And one four-legged, who can quickly turn
toward either wing of the host with a wide front —
toward the right wing or the left,
toward the left wing or the right.
132. Through the strength of this sacrifice, of this invocation,
O Aredvi Sura Anahita,
come down from those stars
toward the earth made by Ahura,
toward the sacrificing priest,
toward the full boiling milk.
Come to help the one who offers libations,
giving gifts, sacrificing,
and entreating that you would grant your favors —
that all those gallant warriors may be strong
like King Vishtaspa.
For her radiance and glory I will offer her a sacrifice worthy of being heard.
133. The will of the Lord is the Law of Righteousness.
I bless the sacrifice and prayer
and the strength and vigor
of the holy water-spring Anahita.
