A funerary repentance liturgy from the Zhengtong Daozang (DZ 0539), addressed to Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun — the Supreme-Unity Celestial Worthy Who Saves from Suffering — confessing nine categories of transgression on behalf of a departed soul: filial impiety, disloyalty, killing, lust, theft, wrath, fraud, pride, and double-heartedness. Each confession section closes with a ninefold prostration litany and a prayer that the soul be delivered from a specific hell-torment and granted a specific heavenly blessing. This text is bound in the same scroll as the companion repentance DZ 0540 (慈尊昇度寶懴). Performed at funerary retreats as part of the ritual cycle for the merit and liberation of the dead.

To the Perfected Who Saves from Suffering with Great Compassion, Great Mercy, and Great Grace.
To the innumerable saints and true immortals attending left and right within the Eastern Extreme Palace, within the Eternal Joy Realm — may all receive this sincere offering of incense as intended.
Humbly I reflect: the Green Florescence Eternal Joy Realm is a heaven originally without sound and without form. The Eastern Extreme Wondrous Solemn Palace holds a Father of Great Compassion and Great Mercy. He traverses the ten directions to save from suffering; through vast kalpas he crosses beings to the other shore. He has flung wide the gate of repentance and opened broad the path of ascension. The obscured and the illumined look to him in trust; the ordinary and the saintly return to him in refuge. Should one but turn the mind to earnest entreaty, he follows every voice and hastens to aid.
Now this sponsor of the rite, in commemoration of the deceased, has established this retreat and performed the rite of ninety-nine prostrations — to offer up even a grain of dust, to express sincerity stroke by stroke, to confess each transgression. We humbly pray that the Supreme Benevolence, moved by desire, and the Supreme Virtue that cherishes life, will erase the black writing of the Right Office of Punishment, permanently dissolve the fault and blemish, bestow the azure scroll of Eastern Florescence, and swiftly achieve ascension and transcendence.
We bow our heads and take refuge in the Infinite Great Way.

With whole heart we take refuge and bow to: enthroned within the True Realm of Upper Purity, amid the Purple Tenuity Jade Tower of Yuyu Heaven's palace, above the Mystic Metropolis Jade Capital — who receives the lineage of the Void Emperor of Original Beginning, who surpasses the roots and sprouts of the Jade Realm of the Western Pure Land — who enters the millet-pearl to draw out the full essence of the True Mystery, and in the Fragrant Grove Garden constantly expounds the key formulas of the secret essentials — whose wondrous virtue is beyond thought, whose supernatural powers cannot be measured — of Great Mercy, Great Vow, Great Sage, Great Compassion, who crosses over beings without measure:

With whole heart we take refuge and bow to: enthroned within the Immortal Realm of Grand Purity, in the Grand Crimson Heaven's palace, soaring above the majestic Golden Gateway, high above the vast and layered heavens — descended into birth across numberless kalpas, who has expounded the dharma to twelve thousand heavens in five thousand secret words — who has fused the wondrous way of the Three Powers, and more than eighty times has tended to beings of the six destinies — whose saintly virtue is lofty and noble, whose mysterious merit is vast and broad — of Great Mercy, Great Vow, Great Sage, Great Compassion, who crosses over beings without measure:

I. Filial Impiety

Who defied father and mother and deceived the principles of heaven — no sin is greater than this.
Who offended parents-in-law and abandoned the constant bonds — this is called transgression.
Who neglected the proper distinctions of high and low, forgot and turned against the obligations of kinship.
Who upon gaining wealth and rank, neglected and betrayed the grace of teachers.
Who fell short in the courtesies of reverence and deference, and failed to provide clothing and food in service and support.
Transgressions such as these are without measure and without limit. Now before the Way, with reverent heart, we bow in acknowledgment.
We humbly pray that divine command be sent forth to rescue the departed soul — that in Hell the soul hear no cries of suffering, that the raging winds and thunder be stilled — and in Heaven may the soul enjoy great fortune, ascending to the lofty void of the Milky Way.

Who received a generous stipend yet never thought of making recompense, especially failing to hold to principle.
Who occupied a humble post yet failed to serve with diligence, making comfort the sole concern.
Who, when trouble came, could not die a single death — looking to which side would win, constantly harboring a divided heart.
Who sealed the mouth and tied the tongue to avoid suspicion, and deceived the heart and feigned emotion to court reputation.
Transgressions such as these are without measure and without limit. Now before the Way, with reverent heart, we bow in acknowledgment.

Who harbored intent and deliberately sought to kill — this is not the ordained course of heaven.
Who harbored resentment and seized the convenient moment, who accepted bribes and wrongfully deepened another's guilt.
Who pressed another to drowning, who drove another to hanging — enduring to commit inhumanity.
Who ate the flesh and slept on the skin, unmoved and unknowing of shame.
Transgressions such as these are without measure and without limit. Now before the Way, with reverent heart, we bow in acknowledgment.
We humbly pray that divine command be sent forth to rescue the departed soul — that in Hell the soul hear no cries of suffering, released from the ordeal of fire-smoke and scorching toil — and in Heaven may the soul enjoy great fortune, delighting in a clear and pure dwelling of mist and rosy clouds.

Who sang seductive songs and lewd verses, confusing people's nature.
Who wore enticing dress and spoke flirtatious words, inflaming another's feelings.
Whose licentiousness brought ruin to the state and destruction to the family, and whose excess led to abortion and harm to children.

Who openly relied on force to seize by robbery, and secretly used schemes to encroach and take.
Who deceived the ears and eyes of others — who, though unknown to others, probed one's own heart with shame.

Who showed no compassion in shouting and cursing, who was excessively cruel in beating and tormenting.
Transgressions such as these are without measure and without limit. Now before the Way, with reverent heart, we earnestly repent.

Who secretly schemed to harm the good and virtuous — deception of the heart, especially grievous.
Who made friendships with no trust, who swore many vain oaths by the divine and numinous.
Whose embellished words and false conduct gave no grounds for reliance, who faced others with right and turned the back with wrong — truly reprehensible.
Transgressions such as these are without measure and without limit. Now before the Way, with reverent heart, we earnestly repent.

Who ranked ministers and nobles the same as common folk, and saw flesh and blood kin as strangers on the road.
Who showed the worthy and the elder no more than a single bow, yet showed affection to vulgar and mediocre company.

Who sought the True while wavering between faith and doubt, attracting disaster and blame in return.
Who broke vows and violated covenants and blamed spirits and ghosts, who transgressed fasts and precepts and deceived the sages and heaven.
Who in dealing with others spoke right with the mouth while thinking wrong in the heart.
Who in undertakings began with diligence and ended in laziness.
Transgressions such as these are without measure and without limit. Now before the Way, with reverent heart, we earnestly repent.
We humbly pray that divine command be sent forth to rescue the departed soul — that in Hell the soul hear no cries of suffering, departing from the place of the Sword Forest and Knife Mountain — and in Heaven may the soul enjoy great fortune, attending beside the lotus throne of the Qian Forest.

Humbly I reflect: that in pain one cries to heaven — this is the highest principle of the human heart. To cherish life and save living things — this is the natural way of our Dao. Only in sincere reverence will one surely receive the descent of grace.
Now these jade volumes and precious scrolls have been fully unrolled in proclamation. The plain sincerity and faithful heart have been fortunate enough to harmonize in response. We celebrate that both the living and the dead have been touched by grace. We trust that the hidden and the visible have been moistened by blessing.
We humbly pray that the Good and Seeing One Who Saves from Suffering, in good time pervading all dust and sand in transformation, will always by the power of sacred might empty Hell through ascension and crossing over.
We bow our heads in refuge, and proclaim the meritorious virtue.
Chant the scriptures and dedicate the merit.

No English translation previously existed. The text is bound in the same scroll as DZ 0540 (慈尊昇度寶懴, Compassionate Worthy's Precious Repentance for Ascending and Crossing Over), the two repentances comprising a single fascicle. The nine sin-categories of this repentance (filial impiety, disloyalty, killing, lust, theft, wrath, fraud, pride, double-heartedness) draw on the Buddhist framework of the ten evils (十惡) fully absorbed into Daoist liturgical practice. Each hell-torment paired with each sin-category corresponds to traditional Daoist (and shared Buddhist-Daoist) cosmology of the underworld: copper pillar, fire-chariot, sword-tree, boiling cauldron, cold ice, and so on. The ritual is performed by an officiant on behalf of a deceased person (名 = [name]); (臣) marks the officiant's name placeholder throughout. 伏以青華長樂界本無聲無色之天東極妙嚴官有大慈大悲之父徧十方而救苦歷浩劫以度人廣開懴悔之門大啓昇遷之路幽明仰賴凡聖皈依苟運念以懇祈悉隨聲而赴感今齋主追薦亡殁崇建齋修禮九九之拜以望塵陳一一之誠而首過伏願至仁從欲上德好生削右府之黒書永銷釁咎授東華之青簡亟遂超淩稽首皈依無極大道
舉按人各恭敬
至心皈命禮玉清聖境清微天宫鬱羅蕭臺之中森羅淨霐之上現有爲之梵相具無極之神通敷演真玄破無有色空之礙拯提趣類絶智愚髙下之分妙用難窺靈機罔測大悲大願大聖大慈無量度人元始天尊
至心皈命禮上清真境禹餘天宫紫微瓊臺之中玄都玉京之上接元始虚皇之統系超西那玉國之根苗入黍米珠盡挹真玄之精粹在香林苑屢談祕要之筌蹄妙德難思神通莫測大悲大願大聖大慈無量度人靈寳天尊
至心皈命禮太清仙境太赤天宫巍巍金闕之髙渺渺重霄之上降生於無量數劫說法於萬二千天五千祕言融三才之妙道八十餘度接六趣之衆生聖德崇髙玄功廣博大悲大願大聖大慈無量度人道德天尊
至心皈命禮青華聖境東極上宫十方化號度衆生百億瑞光瞻妙相即隨機而赴感由誓願之弘深九色蓮花作慈航之彼岸一枝楊柳開甘露之法門無量度人大慈仁者大悲大願大聖大慈太一尋聲救苦天尊
臣衆等至心皈身皈神皈命慈尊投誠上聖重念亡過某靈䰟爰從生育乃至淪亡不孝積愆未伸懴悔或逆父母而欺天理罪莫大焉或犯姑嫜而廢彞倫是謂過矣失尊卑背忘親義得富貴違負師恩禮貌敬讓之有虧衣食奉養之不給如斯罪咎無量無邊今對道前䖍心首謝恭願頒行符命拯濟亡䰟地獄無苦聲息風雷之震怒天堂享大福昇霄漢之髙虚法衆皈依至心朝禮
