The Unfathomable River


Chapter fifty-one of the Mandaean Book of John. A compact eschatological poem organized around a single image: the unfathomable river (nahara shakash), whose waters are dragons and whose waves are scorpions. A voice cries out from both banks. Five classes of sinners are named who will not cross: those who philander and steal, sorcerers and sorceresses, informers and signalers, those who shift boundaries, and those who move boundary stones. The refrain "will not cross the unfathomable river" tolls five times. Then the speaker steps forward: armed because he is a son of Life, he plunges deep into the river and emerges unharmed. The dragons did not strike, the scorpions did not sting, fire did not consume, worms did not destroy. He was not cast into the vessel of molts, because he is Truth, and Life's scent is spread upon him.

In it are firebrands,
upon its two banks are all worms,
at its mouth is set a vessel
for the molts, and they seize and hold fast.

The English translation was independently derived from the Classical Mandaic source text. Haberl & McGrath's English translation was consulted as a reference to verify readings in ambiguous passages, and this consultation is acknowledged. Key departures from the reference translation: (1) "sorcerers and sorceresses" rather than "wizards and witches" for harashia w-harashata — the Mandaic root H-R-Sh means to practice sorcery, not stage magic; "sorcerer" preserves the gravity of the original while "wizard/witch" carries English folk-tale connotations. This continues the departure established in Chapter 47. (2) "signalers" rather than "snitches" for ramazya — the root R-M-Z means to signal or gesture covertly; "snitches" is modern slang inappropriate to the register. Established in Chapter 50. (3) "hold fast" rather than "hold back" for the seizure at the vessel of molts — the Mandaic describes active detention, not passive resistance. (4) "cast me" rather than "throw me" for the speaker's passage through the river — "cast" preserves the ritual gravity of the judgment scene. (5) Gender-neutral rendering throughout: "those who" rather than gendered pronouns for the categories of sinners.

Established departures from previous chapters maintained: harashia = sorcerers (not "wizards"), ramazya = signalers (not "snitches"), šalahiata = molts, "hold fast" for active detention, gender-neutral "those who." This chapter introduces two key Mandaic terms: nahara shakash (unfathomable river) — the eschatological boundary that sinners cannot cross, and šalahiata (molts) — the vessel at the river's mouth where the seized are held. The river is the same judgment-boundary implied in Chapter 50's afterlife topology, now given its proper name.
