Sarvatathāgatastotram

The Sarvatathāgatastotram, "Praise of All the Tathāgatas," is a short anonymous devotional hymn preserved in the Tibetan Buddhist Tengyur — the vast collection of Indian Buddhist commentaries and hymns that complements the Kangyur (the words of the Buddha). Catalogued as Tohoku 1151, it sits within the bsTod tshogs, the "Collection of Praises," among works by Nāgārjuna, Mātṛceṭa, and Dignāga — yet bears no author's name.

The hymn is structured as nine four-line verses (the eighth expanded to six lines), each culminating in the refrain: "To all the Tathāgatas, I bow and prostrate." The poet moves through the Buddhas' qualities in a deliberate arc — from their teaching and its supremacy (I), through their abandonment of defilement (II), their revelation of the Dharma (III), their boundless compassion (IV), their skill in training disciples (V), their cosmic merit (VI), their wisdom that burns away impurity (VII), and their radiant physical form adorned with the thirty-two marks (VIII). The ninth verse is a dedication: may the merit of this praise deliver all beings from the ocean of suffering.

No author is recorded. No Tibetan translator colophon survives. The text exists in the Tengyur simply because someone composed it and it was carried across the mountains into Tibet. No English translation has previously been published. This is the first.

Homage to the Three Jewels!

I.

Whose teaching is supreme among all beings,
Who skillfully perfect the welfare of others,
Who fully drive out the great serpent of affliction —
To all the Tathāgatas, I bow and prostrate.

II.

Who have abandoned all tainted imprints,
Who see with certainty the very nature of all things,
Who strive for the welfare of every living being —
To all the Tathāgatas, I bow and prostrate.

III.

Vessels and source of the precious holy Dharma,
Who reveal the supreme path to nirvāṇa,
Who completely fulfill every hope of the heart —
To all the Tathāgatas, I bow and prostrate.

IV.

With manifest devotion and tender love for all worlds,
Thoroughly imbued with loving-kindness and compassion,
Who perfectly fulfill the conduct that serves all beings —
To all the Tathāgatas, I bow and prostrate.

V.

Who perfectly fulfill the intention to benefit all,
Possessing eyes that open the lotus of those to be trained,
Who awaken vast qualities in their worthy disciples —
To all the Tathāgatas, I bow and prostrate.

VI.

Who have gathered merit through countless aeons,
Before whom Brahmā, Indra, and the lords of the gods bow down,
Whose bodies are adorned with a fathom's radiance —
To all the Tathāgatas, I bow and prostrate.

VII.

Who have vanquished every root of wrongdoing,
Who with the fire of wisdom burned the wood of defilement,
Who have perfected supreme insight —
To all the Tathāgatas, I bow and prostrate.

VIII.

Who have utterly conquered all afflictions with their imprints,
Whose great renown resounds in every direction,
Adorned with the thirty-two supreme marks,
With lotus-like eyes in full bloom,
Like a mass of refined gold —
To all the Tathāgatas, I bow and prostrate.

IX. Dedication

By this vast and wondrous merit,
May I myself cast out all afflictions and their imprints,
And from this great ocean of saṃsāric suffering,
May all beings who have sunk therein be delivered.
