Nirmalavajra (རྙོག་མེད་རྡོ་རྗེ) — Trisaṃvarakrama
The Trisaṃvarakrama — "The Sequence of Three Vows" — is a ceremonial manual that guides a lay bodhisattva student through three ascending levels of commitment: the fasting vow (upavāsa), held for a single day and night; the lay disciple’s vow (upāsaka), held for life; and the generation of awakening mind (bodhicitta), held until full Buddhahood. Each vow expands the scope of the last — restraining the body, then the conduct, then turning all restraint outward toward the liberation of all beings.
The text is preserved in the Degé Tengyur (Tohoku catalogue number D3978), in the Madhyamaka section. Its author, Nirmalavajra (རྙོག་མེད་རྡོ་རྗེ, "Stainless Vajra"), is an Indian Buddhist master whose other works in the Tengyur have not yet been identified. The text was translated into Tibetan by the Indian paṇḍita Atulyadāsa and the chief editor-translator monk Blo ldan shes rab — the renowned Ngok Lotsāwa (1059–1109), one of the most prolific translators of the later diffusion period.
No previous English translation is known to exist. This is the first.
Homage to the Three Jewels.
For a lay bodhisattva student, the conferral of the fasting vow, the lay disciple’s vow, and the generation of the bodhisattva’s awakening mind should be done first.
The Fasting Vow
"Venerable one — or Master — please attend to me. I, the lay disciple named _____, until I reach the essence of awakening, take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha."
Repeat likewise two or three times.
"Thus may the Venerable one hold me as one who has gone for refuge in the Three."
"Venerable one — or Master — please attend to me. I, the lay disciple named _____, from this time forth until the sun rises tomorrow, shall refrain from: killing any living creature, stealing the possessions of others, unchaste conduct, speaking falsely, drinking intoxicants, eating at improper times, garlands, cosmetics, dancing, singing, amusements, high seats and beds, and the like. By these eight qualities, I establish myself in the manner of the noble arhats."
This is the conferral of the fasting vow.
The Lay Disciple’s Vow
The name is spoken. "Please attend to me. I, named _____, from this time forth, for as long as I live: I take refuge in the Buddha, supreme among two-legged beings. I take refuge in all the Dharma of the Great Vehicle. I take refuge in the Saṅgha, supreme among assemblies. May the Venerable one hold me as a lay disciple."
This is the method. "Very well."
"Speak your name. Master, please attend. Just as those noble arhats, for as long as they lived, abandoned killing and turned from killing — likewise, I, named _____, from this day forth, for as long as I live, shall abandon killing and shall turn back from killing. By this first limb, I follow the training of those noble arhats, accomplish it, and practice it."
"Furthermore, just as those noble arhats, for as long as they lived, abandoned taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, speaking falsely, and the heedless state of intoxication by grain wine and prepared wine — and turned from taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, speaking falsely, and the heedless state of intoxication by grain wine and prepared wine — likewise, I, named _____, from this time forth, for as long as I live, shall abandon taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, speaking falsely, and the heedless state of intoxication by grain wine and prepared wine — and shall turn back from taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, speaking falsely, and the heedless state of intoxication by grain wine and prepared wine. By these second, third, fourth, and fifth limbs, I follow the training of those noble arhats. I accomplish it. I practice it."
This is the method. "Very well."
This is the conferral of the lay disciple’s vow.
The Generation of the Awakening Mind
"Just as the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and those great bodhisattvas generated the great mind of awakening — likewise, I too, from this day forth, until I reach the essence of awakening: for the sake of liberating sentient beings who have not been liberated, freeing those who have not been freed, giving relief to those who have not found relief, and leading those who have not fully passed beyond sorrow to pass beyond sorrow — I generate the great mind of awakening."
Today, before all the Protectors,
I invite all beings as guests
to the state of the Sugata
and to happiness in the meantime —
may gods, humans, and all others rejoice!
Thus, with the mind focused on all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, the eight worldly protectors, and all other gods, one should generate the mind of awakening with great faith.
Thus the conventional mind of awakening — which is of the nature of aspiration — is generated. As for the ultimate, it should be generated through the power of meditation.
This is the generation of the mind of awakening.
