Codex V
The teacher speaks privately with James before and after his suffering — warning of the archonic toll-collectors, giving the passwords for heavenly ascent, naming the feminine Sophia who generated the powers without a male consort, and entrusting the revelation to Addaios for Jerusalem.
The (First) Apocalypse of James.
The teacher spoke with me and said, "See now the completion of my salvation. I have given you a sign of these things, James, my brother. For not without reason have I called you my brother, even though you are not my brother in matter. And I am not ignorant concerning you, so that when I give you a sign — know and hear."
"Nothing existed except the One who exists. He is unnameable and unspeakable. I too am unnameable, from the One who exists. Though I have been given a number of names — two — from the One who exists, I exist before you. Since you have asked concerning femininity: femininity existed, but femininity was not first. And she prepared for herself powers and gods. But she did not exist when I came forth, since I am an image of the One who exists. I brought forth the image of him, so that the children of the One who exists might know what things are theirs and what things are foreign."
"Behold, I shall reveal to you everything of this mystery. For they will seize me the day after tomorrow. But my salvation will be near."
James said, "Rabbi, you said, 'They will seize me.' But what shall I do?" He said to me, "Do not be afraid, James. You too will they seize. But leave Jerusalem, for she it is who always gives the cup of bitterness to the children of light. She is a dwelling place of a great number of archons. But your salvation will deliver you from them, so that you may understand who they are and what kinds they are. And you will … hear them … archons … the twelve …"
"… upon his own hebdomad."
James said, "Rabbi, are there then twelve hebdomads and not seven, as there are in the scriptures?" The teacher said, "James, the one who spoke concerning this scripture had knowledge up to this point. But I shall reveal to you what has come forth from the One who cannot be numbered. I shall give a sign concerning their number. As for what has come forth from the One who cannot be reckoned, I shall give a sign concerning their reckoning."
James said, "Rabbi, behold then, I have received their number: there are seventy-two measures." The teacher said, "These are the seventy-two heavens — these are their subordinates. These are the powers of all their dominion. And they were established by them. And these are they who were distributed everywhere, existing under the authority of the twelve archons. The inferior power among them brought forth for herself angels and unnumbered armies. The One who exists, however, was given … on account of … the One who exists … unnameable …"
"… they are. If you wish to give them a name now, you will not be able until you cast away from yourself the blind thought — this chain that encircles you — of the flesh. And then you will reach the One who exists, and you will no longer be James, but you are the One who exists. And all those who are unnameable will all be named."
James said, "Rabbi, in what way shall I reach the One who exists, since all these powers and all these armies are drawn up against me?" He said to me, "These powers are not arranged against you alone, but they are arranged against everyone. Not against you alone are these powers arranged, but against other powers also. But they are arranged against you in judgment. They have not brought you …"
"… nor shall I set them in order. But there will be within you a silence and a hidden mystery. But be afraid of their wrath, for they are wrathful. But I was courageous before their wrath."
James said, "Rabbi, if they are going to be drawn up against you, then is it not without cause that you have come in knowledge, in order to rebuke their forgetfulness? You have come in remembrance, in order to rebuke their ignorance. But I was concerned about you. For you came down to a great blindness, but you were not stained in anything within it. For you came down to a forgetfulness, and yet remembrance was fitting for you. You walked in mud, and your garments were not soiled, neither were you buried in their filth, and you were not caught. And I was not like them, but I clothed myself with everything of theirs. There is forgetfulness within me, and yet I recall the things that are not theirs. There is … and I am in their … of knowledge … I was not beneath their sufferings, but I was afraid of them, seizing me — and what are they going to do? What shall I say? Or what word shall I speak, that I may escape them?"
The teacher said, "James, I commend your understanding and your fear. If you continue to be distressed, do not be concerned for anything except your salvation. For behold, I shall complete this destiny upon this earth, as I have said from the heavens. And I shall reveal to you your salvation."
James said, "Rabbi, how, after these things, will you appear to us again? After they seize you, and you complete this destiny, you will go up to the One who exists." The teacher said, "James, after these things, I shall reveal to you everything — not for your sake alone, but on account of the unbelief of the people, so that faith may come to be among them. For a multitude will attain to faith, and they will increase in …"
"And after this I shall show you a rebuke of the archons. I have revealed this to them: he cannot be seized. If they seize him, then he will overpower everyone. Now then I shall go. Remember the things I have told you. Let them go into your heart."
James said, "My lord, I shall hasten, as you have said." He blessed him and said, "My lord." And he completed the things that were fitting.
When James heard of his sufferings, he was greatly distressed. They waited for the sign of his coming. And he came after some days. And James was walking on the mountain that is called Gaugelan, with his disciples, who listened to him, for they had been afflicted. And he was … a comforter, saying, "This is … the second …"
Then the crowd dispersed. But James remained and found … prayer … as was his custom.
And the teacher appeared to him. Now he stopped his prayer and embraced him. He kissed him, saying, "Rabbi, I have found you. I have heard of your sufferings that you endured. And I was greatly distressed. You know my compassion. Because of this I was wishing, reflecting that I would never see this people. They must be judged for the things that they have done, for the things they have done are beyond what is fitting."
The teacher said, "James, do not be concerned about me, nor about this people. I am the one who was within me. Never did I suffer in anything, nor was I distressed. And this people did me no harm. But this was established as a type of the archons, and it was worthy of destruction … the archons … was sent … righteous …"
"… a servant to him. Therefore you have the name 'James the Righteous.' You see how you will become sober when you have seen me. And you stopped this prayer. Since you are a righteous one of God, you embraced me and kissed me. Truly I say to you that you have stirred up great wrath and indignation against yourself. But it is so that these others might come to be."
James was prudent. He wept, and he was greatly distressed. And they sat down together upon a rock. The teacher said to him, "James, thus you will undergo these sufferings. But do not be grieved. For the flesh is weak. It will receive what has been destined for it. But as for you, do not be afraid and do not be cowardly."
The teacher ceased speaking. James, when he heard these things, wiped away the tears that were on his eyes, and very bitter … that exists …
The teacher said to him, "James, behold, I shall reveal to you your salvation. When they seize you, and you undergo these sufferings, a multitude will arm against you, so that they may seize you. And in particular, three of them will seize you — they who sit there as toll-collectors. Not only do they collect toll, but they also plunder souls. When you come into their power, one of them who is their guard will say to you, 'Who are you, or where are you from?'"
"You are to say to him, 'I am a son, and I am from the Father.' He will say to you, 'What sort of son are you, and to what father do you belong?' You are to say to him, 'I am from the Father who pre-exists, and a son in the Pre-existent One.' He will say to you … You are to say to him … in the …"
"… of the strangers. You are to say to him, 'They are not entirely strangers, but they are from Achamoth — who is the female. And these she produced as she brought down the race from the Pre-existent One. So then they are not strangers, but they are ours. They are indeed ours, because she who is their mistress is from the Pre-existent One. At the same time, they are strangers because the Pre-existent One did not have intercourse with her. Then she produced them.'"
"He will also say to you, 'Where will you go?' You are to say to him, 'To the place from which I came — there I shall return.' If you say these things, you will escape their attacks."
"But if you come to the three other seizers — those who plunder souls by force in that place … these: you are … vessel … more than …"
"… for … they are … the root. You yourselves will become sober … But I shall cry out against the imperishable knowledge, which is the Sophia that is in the Father — who is the mother of Achamoth. No father existed for Achamoth, nor a male consort. But she is a female from a female. She produced you without a male, since she was alone and ignorant of what lives in her mother, thinking that she alone existed."
"But I shall cry out against her mother. And then they will be disturbed, and they will seek the root of their being and their race of their mother. But you will go up to what is yours …"
"… the Pre-existent One … they are types of the twelve disciples and the twelve pairs … Achamoth, which is interpreted 'Sophia.' And I — who am I? And the imperishable Sophia — it is she through whom you will be saved, and all the children of the One who exists — those who have known, and they have been hidden within them. You are to hide them within yourself. But you will be silent. You are to reveal them to Addaios."
"When you come forth, give heed to what exists in Jerusalem. Addaios should bear these things in his heart. In the tenth year, let Addaios sit down and write them. And when he has written them … and they are to be given …"
"… he has … they call him Levi. Then he will bring … words from … that which I first said … women of … Jerusalem, from her … bearing two sons from her, and they will inherit these things and the thought of the one who … to be exalted."
"And the younger one among them will be greater. And let these things be hidden within him until he comes to the age of seventeen years …"
"… from among them, they will run after him greatly, with his companions. And he will be proclaimed through them, and they will proclaim this word. And it will become a seed of grain and will …"
James said, "I am satisfied … and they are … my soul. Yet another thing I ask of you: who are the seven women who have been your disciples? And behold, all women bless you. I am amazed that powerless vessels have become strong by a perception that is in them." The teacher said, "You do well …"
"… a spirit … a spirit of thought, a spirit of counsel of a … a spirit … of knowledge … of their fear … when we found the will of this archon — the one whom they call Adonaios … him, and I … unknown … when I came forth from him, he thought that I was his son. He showed me favour at that time as his son. And before I appeared in this place, he cast them among this people. And from the place … the prophets …"
"… James … I commend you … cast out from you … every lawlessness. And take heed lest they burn against you. When you say these words of this perception, encourage these four: Salome and Mariam and Martha and Arsinoe …"
"… he takes … and robes … But I am not in this way, but the first-fruit of the … heaven … them, in order that the power of God might be revealed. Corruption ascended to incorruptibility. And femininity accomplished through femininity what descended to masculinity."
James said, "Rabbi, into these three, then, has their … been cast. For they were despised, and they were persecuted …"
"… Behold … everything … from any … for you have received … of knowledge. And … now, then, what is the … walk … you will find …"
"But I shall go forth and shall reveal that they believed in you, so that they might be satisfied with a blessing and a salvation. And this revelation will take place."
And he went at that time immediately and rebuked the twelve. And he cast out of them contentment concerning the way of knowledge …
… the majority of … When they saw, the doer of this deed took … the others … saying … "Take this one away from this earth, for he is not worthy of life." They were afraid, and they arose, saying, "We have no part in this blood. For a righteous man will perish through injustice."
James departed so that …
