The Discourse on the Eighth and Ninth

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

Codex VI

A Hermetic initiation dialogue in which Hermes Trismegistus guides his disciple through mystical ascent to the Eighth and Ninth celestial spheres, encountering Mind, angels, and the speechless hymn of silence. Nag Hammadi Codex VI, pages 52–63.

"O my father, you promised me that you would bring my mind into the Eighth, and afterward into the Ninth. You said, This is the order of the tradition, O my son."

"This indeed is the order, but the promise was made according to human nature. For I told you when I began the promise: If you remember each of the stages, after I have sent the spirit through the power, I have set down for you the energies. The understanding indeed is within you; within me, as it were, the power is fitting. For when I poured forth from the fountain, these things I begot."

"O my father, every word you spoke to me well. But I marvel at this word you now say. For you said that the power within me — you say that you begot it as children are begotten. Then, O my father, do I have many brothers who will read the books?"

"Well, O my son. This good thing [...] at every time. Because of this, O my son, it is necessary for you to know your brothers, and to honour them fittingly, since they have come from the same father. For the book — the book I have addressed, I have named them as offspring, like these children."

"Then, O my father, do they also have bodies?"

"O my son, they are spiritual. For they exist as energies, and they increase other souls. Because of this I say that they are immortal."

"Your word is true, and has no contradiction from now on. O my father, begin the discourse on the Eighth and the Ninth, and count me also with my brothers. Let us pray, O my son, to the father of the universe, and to your brothers who are my children, that he may give the spirit of speech."

"How does one pray, O my father, when joining with the books? O my father, I wish to be persuaded."
"[...] but it rests within it [...] And it is true for you to remember the progress that came to you in the books. O my son, we are alike in the earliest stage. As the small ones, you set aside the foolish problems, the senseless ones."

"O my father, the progress that came to me now, and the providence according to the books that came to me — it surpasses the first. These were in me first."

"O my son, when you understand the truth of your word, you will find your brothers praying with you, who are my children."

"O my father, I understand nothing else except the good that came to me in the books — this which you call the good of the soul. The building comes to you step by step. Let understanding come to you and you will learn it."

"I have understood, O my father, each of the words. But rather [...]"

"[...] that exist in [...] O my son, [...] in blessings from those who have received them."

"O my father, the word that you will say — I will receive its power from you, as they spoke of it, the two of them. Let us pray, O my father."

"O my son, what is fitting is that with our whole mind and our whole heart and our soul we should pray to God, and ask of him the gift of the Eighth, that it may reach us, and that each one through him may receive what belongs to him. Yours indeed is to understand; mine also is to be able to speak the word from the fountain that flows to me. Let us pray, O my father."

"I call upon you, the one who rules over the kingdom of power, whose word becomes a begetting of light, whose words are immortal, eternal, unchanging — the one whose will begets life for the forms throughout every place; his nature gives form to substance; by him are moved the souls of the Eighth, and the angels [...] those that exist. His providence reaches to everyone [...] he begets everyone. [...] from the aeon, in spirit he created all things. The one who has himself within him, bearing everyone, being full — the invisible God whom they speak of in silence; they move toward his image, governing it, and they govern."

"The sower of power, the one exalted above all greatness, the one who is chosen — we honour you!"

Zо̄zazо̄th!

"Lord, give us wisdom from your power that reaches to us, that we may tell ourselves the vision of the Eighth and the Ninth. Already we have advanced to the Seventh, since we are pious and walk in your law, and your will we fulfill at every time. For we have walked in your way and we have left behind [...] that your vision might come. Lord, give us the truth in the image; give us through the spirit that we may see the form of the image that has no deficiency; and receive the pattern of the fullness from us through our praise; and know the spirit that is in us."

"For from you the universe received soul; for from you, the unbegotten, the begotten came into being — the begetting of the self-begotten, existing through you; the begetting of all begotten things that exist, through the rational sacrifice from us, which we send up to you with our whole heart and our soul and our whole strength. Save what is in us, and give us the immortal wisdom."

"Let us embrace one another, O my son, in truth. Rejoice over this! For already from them the power that is light is coming to us. For I see! I see depths beyond telling! How shall I tell you, O my son? [...] How shall I speak of the universe? I am Mind, and I see another Mind, the one that moves the soul. I see the one that moves me in holy wonder. You give me strength. I see myself — I wish to speak. A fear holds me back."

"I have found the beginning of the power that is above all powers, the one that has no beginning. I see a fountain bubbling in life."

"I said, O my son, that I am Mind. I have seen. Speech cannot reveal this. For the whole Ogdoad, O my son, and the souls within it, and the angels — they sing hymns in silence. And I, the Mind, I understand."

"How is it that through him they sing hymns? You have become one whom no one can speak of. I consent, O my father. I wish to sing hymns to you while I consent. But say it, for I am the Mind."
"I understand the Mind, Hermes — the one who cannot be interpreted, who keeps within himself. I rejoice, O my father, seeing you smile." The universe also rejoices. "Because of this, no creature will be distressed in your life. For you are the lord of the citizens in every place. Your providence watches over them. I call you father, aeon of aeons, spirit divine, who with a spirit gives rain upon everyone."

"What are you saying to me, O my father, Hermes?"

"Because of this I say nothing, O my son. For it is right before God that we be silent about what is hidden."

"O Trismegistus, do not let my soul be deprived of the divine vision. For you have power over all things, as a teacher of the universe."

"Turn to praise, O my son, and say it while you consent. Ask for what you wish in silence."

When he had finished blessing, he cried out: "Father, Trismegistus! What shall I say? We have received this light. And I see this same vision in you. And I see the Ogdoad, and the souls within it, and the angels singing hymns to the Ennead and its powers. And I see the one who has all their powers, creating those in the spirit."

"From now on it is fitting for us to be silent in a fitting way. Do not speak of the vision from now on. It is fitting to sing hymns to the father, until the sixth [...] body."

"What you say, O my father, I also wish to say. I sing hymns in my heart."

"Since you have come to rest, turn to the blessing. For you have found what you seek."

"But what is fitting, O my father, is for the blessing to come from my full heart. And what is fitting is your blessing, which you will say up to God — let it be written in this imperishable book."
"I will say the blessing up from my heart, entreating the end of the universe, and the beginning of the beginning — the object sought by all humans, the immortal discovery, the begetter of light and truth, the sower of reason, the love of immortal life. No hidden word can speak of you, Lord. Because of this my Mind wishes to sing hymns to you always. I am the instrument of your spirit. Mind is your plectrum. Your counsel plays me. I see myself. I have received strength from you, for your love has reached us."

"Well, O my son! O grace! After these things, I give thanks, singing hymns to you. For I have received life from you. When you made me wise, I bless you. I call your hidden name within me:"

"You are the one who exists with the spirit. I hymn you in godliness."

"O my son, write this book for the temple of Diospolis, in hieroglyphic characters, calling it The Eighth Reveals the Ninth."

"I will do it, O my father, as you now command."

"O my son, write the words of the book on stelae of turquoise. O my son, this book should be written on stelae of turquoise, in hieroglyphic characters. For Mind itself has become overseer of these. Therefore I command that this discourse be carved on stone and that you place it within my sanctuary, with eight guardians to watch over it, and [...] of the sun. The males on the right with faces of frogs, the females on the left with faces of cats."

"Place a stone of milky quartz at the base of the turquoise tablets — let it be a square — and write the name on the sapphire tablet in hieroglyphic characters."

"O my son, you will do this when I am in Virgo with the sun, at the sixth hour of the day. Do not let Fate hinder me."

"O my father, every word you say I will do with joy. Write also an oath in the book, lest those who come to read the book use the name wickedly, nor oppose the works of Fate. They will submit to the law of God, having not transgressed at all, but in purity asking God for wisdom and knowledge. And the one who will not be begotten first in God comes in the general discourses and the introductory ones. He will not be able to read what is written in this book, for his conscience convicts him — doing nothing shameful, nor giving himself to pleasure, but step by step walking, coming into the way of immortality. And in this way he comes into the understanding of the Eighth, which reveals the Ninth — and in this way we will do it."

"O my father, this is what I wish. I adjure the one who will read this holy book — by heaven and earth and fire and water, and the seven rulers of substance, and the creative spirit within them, and the unbegotten God, and the self-begotten, and the one who was begotten to watch over all that Hermes has said. Those who keep this oath — God will be reconciled with them, and with everyone whom we have named. But those who transgress this oath — the wrath of each one of these will come upon them."

"This is the perfect one who exists, O my son."

Sahidic Coptic transcription from Nag Hammadi Codex VI, pages 52–63. Transcribed by Milan Konvicka for the Marcion Project, released under GPL v2. Based on codex photographs and the Brill critical edition (The Coptic Gnostic Library, ed. James M. Robinson). The Coptic text is a translation from a lost Greek original, likely composed in Alexandria between the second and fourth centuries CE.
