Codex VIII
Peter writes to Philip, urging the apostles to gather on the Mount of Olives. They pray and the risen Christ appears in a great light, teaching them about the deficiency of the aeons, the descent into bodies, and how to fight the archons. Nag Hammadi Codex VIII, pages 132–140.
The letter of Peter which he sent to Philip:
Peter, the apostle of the teacher, the anointed one, to Philip our beloved brother and our fellow apostle, and the brothers who are with you: Greetings.
Now I want you to understand, our brother, that we received commandments from our Lord and the Saviour of the whole world, that we should come together, that we should teach, and that we should preach in the salvation that was promised to us by our Lord, the teacher, the anointed one. But you have been separating from us, and you did not desire that we come together and learn how we should organize ourselves, that we might preach the good news. So would it be pleasing to you, our brother, to come according to the commandments of our God, the teacher?
When Philip received these, and when he read them, he went to Peter with joy, rejoicing. Then Peter gathered the others and they went upon the mountain that is called the Mount of Olives, the place where they used to gather with the blessed anointed one when he was in a body.
Then when the apostles came together and cast themselves upon their knees, they prayed in this way, saying: Father, Father, Father of the light, you who possess the incorruptibilities — hear us, just as you took pleasure in your holy child, the teacher, the anointed one. For he became for us a luminary in the darkness. Hear us!
And they turned again and prayed a second time, saying: Son of life, Son of immortality, who is in the light! Son, anointed one of immortality, our Redeemer — give us power, for they seek to kill us!
Then a great light appeared, so that the mountain shone from the vision of the one who appeared. And a voice cried out to them, saying: Listen to my words that I may speak to you. Why do you seek me? I am the teacher, the anointed one, who is with you forever.
Then the apostles worshipped and were saying: Lord, we wish to understand the deficiency of the aeons and your Pleroma. And how are we held in this place of dwelling? Or how have we come to this place? Or in what manner shall we depart? Or how do we have the authority of boldness? Or why do the powers fight against us?
Then a voice came to them from the light, saying: You yourselves are witnesses that I told you all these things. But because of your unbelief I will speak again.
Concerning the deficiency of the aeons — this is the deficiency: the disobedience and the lack of counsel of the Mother, who appeared without the command of the Majesty of the Father. She wished to raise up aeons. And when she spoke, the Arrogant One appeared. When she had left behind a portion, the Arrogant One seized it. And it became a deficiency. This is the deficiency of the aeons.
When the Arrogant One then had taken a portion, he sowed it. And he placed powers over it and authorities. And he enclosed it within the dead aeons. And all the powers of the world rejoiced that they had been begotten. But they do not know the one who was pre-existent. For they were strangers to him. But this is the one whom they gave power to and served, having blessed him. But he — the Arrogant One — was exalted above the blessing of the powers. He became jealous. And he wished to make an image in the place of an image, and a form in the place of a form. He commanded the powers in his authority to mold mortal bodies. And they came into being from a dissimilarity, from the appearance that had come into being.
Concerning the Pleroma — it is I. And I was sent down in the body because of the seed that had fallen. And I came down into their mortal moulding. But they did not know me; they were thinking of me that I was a mortal person. And I spoke with the one who belongs to me. And he listened to me just as you also who listened today. And I gave him authority so that he might come into the inheritance of his Fatherhood. And I took … filled with joy in his salvation.
Since there was a deficiency, for this reason he became a Pleroma. Concerning why you are being held — it is because you are mine. When you strip yourselves of what is corruptible, then you will become luminaries in the midst of mortal people.
Concerning why the powers fight against you — it is because they have no rest like you, since they do not wish that you be saved.
Then the apostles worshipped again, saying: Lord, tell us in what way shall we fight against the archons, since the archons are above us.
Then a voice cried out to them from the one who had appeared, saying: You then, you will fight against them in this way — for the archons fight against the inner person. You then, you will fight against them in this way: Come together in one place and teach in the world the salvation with a promise. And you yourselves, gird yourselves with the power of my Father. And reveal your prayer. And he — the Father — will help you, as he has helped you by sending me. Do not be afraid. I am with you forever.
Then there was lightning and thunder from heaven. And the one who had appeared to them from that place was taken up to heaven.
Then the apostles gave thanks to the Lord with every blessing. And they returned to Jerusalem. And coming up, they were speaking with one another on the road about the light that had come to pass. And a word came forth concerning the Lord. They were saying: If our Lord himself suffered, how much more then must we?
Peter answered, saying: He suffered on our account, and it is necessary for us also to suffer because of our smallness.
Then a voice came to them, saying: I told you many times that it is necessary for you to suffer. It is necessary that they bring you to synagogues and governors, so that you will suffer. But the one who does not suffer …
… the apostles rejoiced greatly. And they came up to Jerusalem and went up to the temple. They gave teaching in salvation in the name of the Lord, the teacher, the anointed one. And they healed the multitude.
Peter opened his mouth and said to his disciples: Surely our Lord, the teacher, when he was in a body, gave us signs of everything. For he came down. Brothers, listen to my voice! And he was filled with a holy spirit. He spoke in this way: Our luminary, the teacher, came down and was crucified. And he wore a crown of thorns. And he put on a garment of purple. And he was crucified on a tree. And he was buried in a tomb. And he rose from the dead.
Brothers, the teacher is a stranger to this suffering. But it is we who have suffered through the transgression of the Mother. And because of this he did everything in a likeness among us. For the Lord, the teacher, the Son of the glory of the immeasurable Father — he is the author of our life.
Brothers, let us not listen then to these lawless ones, and let us walk in …
… Peter … saying: Our Lord, the teacher, the anointed one, the author of the rest — give us a spirit of understanding, so that we also might perform deeds of power.
Then Peter and the other apostles saw, and they were filled with a holy spirit. And each one performed healings. And they separated to go out to preach the Lord, the teacher. And they gathered together, and greeted one another, saying: Amen.
Then the teacher appeared, saying to them: Peace to you all, and everyone who believes in my name. And when you depart, joy will come to you, and grace and power. Do not be afraid; behold, I am with you forever.
Then the apostles separated to go out to the four words, to preach. And they went in the power of the teacher in peace.
