A Valentinian Exposition

Codex XI, Text 2 — Nag Hammadi Library

A Valentinian theological treatise on the unfolding of the Pleroma, the fall of Sophia, the creation of the Demiurge, and the promise of restoration — the only systematic Valentinian theology to survive in Coptic.

[Page 22 — top section damaged]

[...] neither in [...] into [...] the supply [...] those who [...]

I will speak my mystery to those who are mine and to those who will be mine. These, then, are the ones who have known the one who truly exists — the Father, who is the root of the All, the ineffable one who dwells in the Monad, dwelling alone in silence. The silence is his rest. Since indeed he existed as Monad, and nothing existed before him, he exists also in the Dyad and in the Pair. His Pair is Silence. He had within himself the All, existing within him — both the Will and the Becoming, the Love and the Permanence.

These, then, are unbegotten. God came forth — the Son, the Mind of the All. This is to say, from the root of the All, his other thought existing. For this one, he had within the Mind concerning the All. For indeed he received a first thought. Nothing existed before him. From that place, he himself is the one who moved.

[Page 23 — top 16 lines lost]

[...] a spring, bubbling. This, then, is the root of the All, and Monad it is, with nothing before it. The second spring existing in silence, and speaking with it alone. The fourth, according to the manner of the one who revealed himself alone — in the fourth, existing in the three-hundred. He first brought himself forth alone, and in the second, he revealed his will. And in the fourth, he spread himself forth alone.

These, indeed [...] And the one who comes into being before he is grasped [...] the Pleroma through the Word [...] his flesh. These, then, are the aeons that resemble them.

When the Word entered into her, as I first said, and the one who comes into being before he is grasped brought forth [...]

[...] before they [...] the consort. And [...] the origination and [...] Christ, and her seeds. [...] the discourse [...] the types of the deficiency [...] a perfection. Since a perfect form is fitting to go up into the Pleroma, he did not wish to consent to the suffering. Rather they prevented him [...]

[...] through the Boundary — that is, through the consort. Since her correction will not come about through anyone except through her own Son, who alone has the fullness of divinity. He made himself pleased within himself bodily, setting aside the powers. And he came down.

These things happened to Sophia until the moment when her Son ran upward out of her. She knew, for she existed in [...]

[Page 34 — top 9 lines lost]

[...] in a union and in a restoration. They ceased [...]

[...] those who were mine, those who [...] when I was troubled [...] they were evil. These — the organism indeed turned away [...] and within [...]

[...] these, then, that were mine — those who [...] when I was moved [...] death — they turned [...] her. And she repented, and she asked the Father of truth, saying: I have turned away from my consort. Because of this, I am not worthy [...]

She knew that she was evil, and what had become of her. They suffered, then, in her companionship. They said she was deficient, since she remained alone. And she gave birth to the One Not Like Her. He said she was deficient, since she separated herself from her consort.

[Page 35 — top 8 lines lost]

[...] Jesus and Sophia. Indeed they revealed creation. Since the seeds of Sophia are imperfect and formless, Jesus conceived of a creation of this kind. He fashioned it for the seeds, with Sophia suffering with him. For since they were seeds and had no form, he came down and brought forth the fullness of aeons — places that were not fashioned. They also are aeons of the type of the Pleroma, together with the Father, the incomprehensible.

Over the creation, indeed, he established [...] And the Demiurge began to create a human — according to his image, on one hand, but according to the likeness of those who exist from the beginning, on the other. A place of becoming of this kind — in which she had used the seeds [...]

[Page 38 — top 9 lines lost]

[...] separated [...] God. When they [...] came, concerning the human. The Devil, on one hand, is one of the gods. He hid himself, and he disturbed the entire plain of the gates. And he thrust away his own root, from that place, in the body and in the fleshly bonds. For he surpasses the human of God. And Adam fell.

Because of this, he begot for himself sons who are wrathful against one another. Cain killed Abel his brother. For the Demiurge breathed into them his spirit. There arose the battle and the apostasy of the angels, and the humanity of the uncircumcised and the circumcised, and those in heaven and those upon the earth — the spirits and the fleshly — and the Devil before God.

Because of this, some angels desired the daughters of humans, and they came down to flesh, so that God made a flood. And he nearly regretted that he had fashioned the cosmos.

[Page 39 — top 7 lines lost]

[...] the consort and Sophia and her Son, and the angels and the seeds. The consort is the Perfect One. And Sophia and Jesus, and the angels and the seeds — they are images of the Pleroma. The Demiurge, then, cast a shadow upon the consort and the Pleroma. And Jesus and Sophia and the angels and the seeds — the Perfect One gives glory to Sophia. The image gives glory to the truth.

The glory of the seeds and Jesus are the unspeakable, together with the Only-Begotten. And the angels are the self-existing, together with the seed-bearing females.

All of these are Pleromatic. Therefore, when Sophia receives her consort, and Jesus receives the Christ, and the seeds and the angels — then the Pleroma will receive Sophia in joy, and the All will come about in unity and in restoration.

For in this, the aeons have received increase. They knew, then, that when they change they exist as unchangeable.

Colophon

A Valentinian Exposition occupies pages 22–39 of Nag Hammadi Codex XI, followed by five appended liturgical texts (On the Anointing, On the Baptism A & B, On the Eucharist A & B). Together they constitute the only surviving Valentinian ritual and theological handbook from antiquity. The exposition itself is the sole systematic Valentinian theological treatise in Coptic, describing the unfolding of the divine Pleroma from the Father through the Dyad, the emanation of the aeons, Sophia’s fall and the generation of the Demiurge, the creation of humanity, the sin of Adam, and the promise of eschatological restoration when Sophia is reunited with her consort.

The text’s theology closely parallels the Valentinian systems described by Irenaeus and Hippolytus, providing rare direct evidence — in the Valentinians’ own words — of the myth those heresiologists summarised.
