Unity 14, Gate 6 — Bayani Meditation Practice and the Qiblah of the Heart

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

by Nima Hazini (Sufi Babi)

The Bayani tradition — the heterodox Babi lineage that declined to follow Baha'u'llah after the martyrdom of the Bab in 1850 — produced a small but remarkable body of living practice distinct from mainstream Baha'ism. Nima Hazini, who posted to alt.religion.bahai as "Sufi Babi" and "Freethought110," was among the most prolific English-language voices of this tradition in the early 2000s, composing original liturgical and devotional texts that synthesize Bayani theology with Sufi dhikr, Tantric chakra practice, and Neoplatonic mysticism.

This post presents the meditation instructions for the "second cycle" of the Bayan — framed as the quintessence of the sixth Gate of the fourteenth Unity (a reference to the organizational structure of the Persian Bayan, where each "Unity" contains nineteen chapters). Hazini prescribes a complete daily practice: the new Bayani greetings (Allahu Ahad / Allahu Samad), ablution prayers combining Quranic divine names, a visualization sequence tracing the Greatest Name symbols through the chakra system with Mahayugapranayama breathing, kundalini awakening with the Arabic dhikr "Allahu Ahad" thirteen times, and a practice of contemplating the face of the physical beloved as theophany.

At the heart of the instructions is a bold theological shift: the qiblah — the traditional point of adoration toward Mecca — is relocated to the heart itself. "The Throne of your own interior Temple — your heart" becomes the only place of prostration. The post concludes with the Hermetic maxim "Solve et Coagula," situating Bayani practice within the broader Western esoteric tradition. It is a rare document of living practice from a tradition that has left almost no published liturgical record.

The quintessence of the sixth Gate of the fourteenth Unity in the number of All-Things (361) is regarding the basic daily practice of meditation of the people of the Bayan in this second cycle, and regarding the Qiblih (the point of adoration), the new Bayani greeting, purification, and other related matters.

Greeting and Salutation

Among the People of the truth of the Bayan the new Bayani greeting is the following: Female and male shall greet each other henceforth with 'God is the One' (Allahu Ahad) and its response shall be 'God is the Eternal' (Allahu Samad). Let exclamations be exclaimed with 'O Love' (Ya Eshq) or 'O Light' (Ya Nur) and all farewells with 'O Tahirih' (Ya Tahirih).

Ablution and Purification

Whenever the People of the Bayan wish to purify and wash their physical Thrones, let them, first, say 'God' (Allah) six times whilst water is pouring over the crown of their heads; then, 'there is no God but God, Truly, Truly, Livingly, Livingly, Illuminatively' (La ilaha illa Allah Haqqan Haqqan Hayyan Hayyan Nuran) once, five times 'God, God, my Lord, and I do not associate anyone with God my Lord' (Allah Allah Rabbi wa la ashrak bi'llahi Rabbi Ahadan) and once 'God, God He is God and there is no other god holier' (Allah, Allah huwa'Llah wa la ilaha ghayruhu Quddusan). If they wish to perform ablutions before their meditations, let them say once 'O the Truly Real, O the Living, O the Single, O the Just, O the Singular, O the Peerless, O the Holy, O the Beloved, O the Light!' (Ya Haqq, Ya Hayy, Ya Fard, Ya Adl, Ya Waheed, Ya Qayyum, Ya Quddus, Ya Mahbub, Ya Nur).

The Meditation Practice

Let those who wish to approach the Presence of the Unity of the Truly Real and become drowned and submerged thereby in the Pre-Eternal Ocean of the Universal Unific Existential Love of the Divine Victorial Lights, drink from the goblet of the wine of ecstatic intimacy and intoxication, draw near, envision the face of their highest physical beloved in this contingent world in their mind's eye and draw upon the vision of their breasts, in silence and contemplation, with the imaginary inner finger, the eight symbols — from right to left — of the Greatest Name upon the Imaginal form of the Dawning Horizon of their interior heart at least three times a day — if not, just once — by whatever time they should so determine for themselves. Let them practice the deep breathing of the Mahayugapranayama (the Great Yogic Breath) on these three occasions with the clearing of the Ida and Pingala nadis before each practice and let them purify by holding the air and exhaling it with the force available to them in their lungs, but without hurting themselves. Let them then salute the Sun of their inner beings and say, "The Splendour of God be upon you, O the Sun of my Reality, in every moment, before every moment and after every moment!"

innama'l-baha min Allah `alayki ya shams al-haqiqati fi kullu hin wa qabla hin wa ba'da hin

Then, let them descend down the points of each of their cakras contemplating through all the rest of the subtle centers of their body (cakras/latifas) and visualize the letters of the name of their Beloved, Tahirih, or any other Name they so wish, from inside and out of their Third Eye, out of which then emanates the eight symbols of the Greatest Name; then let them contemplate the Name 'Light' (Nur) on their throat cakra, then the Name of the Living (Hayy) on their heart cakra, then the Name Love (Eshq) on the cakra of their navel, then 'Heavens' (samawat) on the cakra of their sexual organs and then, finally, 'earth' (ard) with the concluding base (muladhara) cakra at the tip of their coccyx.

Kundalini Invocation

Let them then invoke the power of the kundalini serpent and say to themselves 'God is the One' (Allahu Ahad) thirteen times to the numerical value of the Name 'the One' (Ahad) whilst envisioning the amphibolous forms of the physical and spiritual theophanies of their Beloved pouring the dazzling jewels, the highest sparkling gems, of Its supernal Love in Oceans of tidal waves into the ever widening, expanding and inexhaustive divine Well-Springs of their Breasts, their inner Heart. Let them be ravished by this vision and become as drunk and intoxicated with it until they can endure no more and thus explode into nothingness and become as naught, hence One with It and beyond to the Source of the Primal Singularity Itself! And if the kundalini serpent should fully uncoil when they are in a purified inner and outward state, Awakening the Sakti power thereby, let them let go of all with ease, joy, happiness, freedom and without the least fear, say to themselves, as they move into the highest ecstacy, God is the Living (Allah Hayy), and thus allow the elixir of Life (Amrita) to gush forth from the Crown of the top of the Head of their being like endless cascades of perfumed and musk scented waterfalls!

O People of Truth, what we have given you here has forever made the need to take on any physical guru or spiritual master an absolute unnecessary redundancy, for here, and with your own innovations and what you have learned of other practices elsewhere, the means and vehicle of all attainment and realization has been laid bare right in front of your very eyes for your own use without any further need ever for any living guru, shaykh or self-styled master, or even a religion or creed. Know, you all are the masters and gurus already, so put all your fears and misgivings aside about this Truth and taste the sweetest love of the fruit of your own inner existence without any further hindrance of any artificial intermediaries between you and your Eternal Beloved, and do not listen to those who tell you otherwise — they are of the deceivers and charlatans!

The Beloved and the New Qiblah

O People of the truth of the Bayan, approach your Beloved with absolute Love and the highest ecstasy, and there is no greater vehicle to this end than to contemplate the face of your physical beloved, whoever they may be, who is but the physical irradiation of the self-disclosing manifestation of the Eternal Beloved. Let the two of you become One, outwardly and inwardly, gazing deeply into each other's eyes and thereby plunging into the oceans of each other's beings, so that there is no longer a veil of duality and separation betwixt two separate existences and between yourself and the One All. It does not matter whether that beloved is physically present or not. Fix your inner gaze upon them, make them the axis of your being and circumambulate around the essence of the reality of your beloved as if you are performing the most holy pilgrimage to Shiraz or Mecca or the inner sanctum of the Holy of holies of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem. The greater your love for your contingent beloved; the greater shall your nearness to your Eternal Beloved be, and this is a great secret for the attainment of realization that until this Day very few (other than the Tantric sages of India) have dared to disclose openly!

As such in this second cycle of the Bayan, the point of adoration (qiblah) is verily fixed firmly in no other quarter of contingency but the Throne of your own interior Temple — your heart — so bow down night and day to no other thing but it and it alone, for the expanse of your heart is the eternal celestial garden, the axis upon which turns around a Point which is the House of God in Its very core Center, and nowhere else! If you are able, say 99 times 'God is the Most Mighty' (Allahu A'zam) once a day using prayer beads while contemplating the Greatest Name on your Third Eye. And, verily, the outward manner of arrangement for the daily practice of this Bayani meditation shall be left to each individual person to determine for themselves what best suits them. Use and expend on whatever you feel shall facilitate your practice, for all things from the Heavens, to the earth and what is between them have been created for you and your realization of Union with the Divine Ground of Existential Unicity of that Pre-Eternal theophany of intoxicating ecstatic Love, the mirror reflecting the "Hidden Treasure," which can be found in no other domain but your own heart.

Realize All-Things in their contraries, which are Same although different but One, for the theophanic self-disclosures of the Truly Real are manifest in the coincidence of opposites. Innovate upon your practices however you wish, in whatever manner you wish, with whoever you wish, whenever you wish. The Tree of Primal Verity recommends the daily practice of Hatha Yoga, as it greatly facilitates the physical preparation for the process of meditation. The highest worship is, verily, in the embrace of lovers and no worship beyond it on this plane can be conceived.*

O People of the truth of the Bayan, the fullest practices of the attainment of the highest gnosis, with detailed explanations, shall be given to you in the Temples of the Pure Religion of Gnosis. But know the means of that attainment by always contemplating the truth of the highest vehicle known to the alchemists of all ages in all questions and matters, and that is,

Solve et Coagula!

* Sex in the state of absolute love and total intimacy and complete openness where psychological boundaries are one by one consciously pulled apart by the two parties in the act is the highest worship.

This text was posted by Nima Hazini (under the pseudonym "Freethought110," also known as "Sufi Babi" and later "Wahid Azal") to alt.religion.bahai on 9 August 2004. It presents original liturgical and meditation instructions for the Bayani community — the heterodox Babi lineage that refused to recognize Baha'u'llah as the next Manifestation after the Bab. The text is notable for its syncretic integration of Bayani dhikr formulas with Tantric chakra practice, kundalini yoga, Hermetic alchemy (Solve et Coagula), and the radical relocation of the Islamic qiblah from Mecca to the practitioner's own heart.
