Visitation Prayer of the Pre-Eternal Holiness of the Bayan

Ziyaratnameh-ye Quds al-Azaliyyatu'l-Bayan

by Nima S. Hazini (Sayfu'llah Quddusiyyah)

The ziyaratnameh — visitation prayer — is one of the great liturgical forms of Shia Islam and its Babi/Bayani successor tradition: a formal devotional text recited when visiting the shrine of a holy figure, calling upon their spiritual presence and bearing witness to their divine station. The tradition flows from the Imami Shia ziyarat texts for the Twelve Imams through to the Bab's own visitation prayers for the Imams and, eventually, to prayers composed within the Bayani community for its own saints.

Mirza Yahya Nuri (1831–1912), known by his title Subh-i-Azal (Morning of Eternity), was the appointed successor of the Bab and the central figure of the Azali Bayani lineage — the branch that refused to follow Baha'u'llah after the Bab's martyrdom in 1850. Called "the Eternal Fruit" (Thamarih Azaliyyah) by his devotees, Subh-i-Azal spent most of his life in exile in Cyprus, where he died. The Bayani tradition he led preserved the Bab's original revelation without the modifications introduced by the Baha'i Faith.

Nima Hazini, writing here under his spiritual name Sayfu'llah Quddusiyyah (Sword of God the Holy), composed this prayer in April 2004 in Arabic, translating it himself for the English-language Bayan19 online community. The prayer is structured in twenty-eight verses — numerologically significant, as 28 is the abjad value of both Yahya (the Eternal Fruit's given name) and Wahid (Oneness/Singularity), a Bayani honorific. The prayer moves through three registers: direct apostrophe to Subh-i-Azal (vv. 1–13), escalating invocations of divine Pre-Eternity in a deliberately baroque Babi theological vocabulary (vv. 14–19), and triple declarations of divine unity (vv. 20–23) culminating in a self-declaration of the author's own spiritual identity as a returned divine proof (vv. 24–28). A rare surviving piece of original Bayani liturgical literature in English.

Verily I am the Proof of God and His Light for verily I am the Holy Pre-Eternal and the Living Light!

Colophon

Composed by Nima S. Hazini (Sayfu'llah Quddusiyyah, "Essence of the Sixth Existence") originally in Arabic, April 2004. Translated by the author and posted to talk.religion.bahai and alt.religion.bahai on July 30, 2004, under the imprint of Bayan19 Publications. The twenty-eight verses correspond numerologically to the abjad value of both Yahya (the given name of Subh-i-Azal) and Wahid (Oneness), the primary Bayani honorific. Verse 13's shift to first person ("there is no god but I") signals the author's own claimed spiritual station within the Bayani doctrine of progressive divine manifestation. Verse 25's "He and She" is a notable theological marker of Bayani divine femininity.
