The Lament for the Destruction of Nippur is a Sumerian city lament (ETCSL c.2.2.4) belonging to the five canonical laments of the Ur III collapse, though its specific setting and purpose differ from its companions. Nippur was not primarily a political capital but the religious center of all Sumer — the city of Enlil, king of the gods, whose temple the Ekur was the axis of the cosmos and the legitimizing center of all kingship. When Nippur fell, it was not merely a city that was lost but the theological heart of Sumerian civilization. Unlike the Ur lament, which closes in a prayer for restoration not yet granted, the Nippur lament frames destruction within an arc of restoration already accomplished — the composition ends with praise for Ishme-Dagan of Isin, who rebuilt the Ekur and restored Enlil's cult. This suggests the text was composed under the Isin dynasty (c. 2017–1794 BCE) as both memorial and hymn of triumph.
The composition is structured in kirugu sections with barsig antiphons — the standard liturgical form of the balag-lament, performed in temple ritual by the gala-priest. Its literary emphasis differs from the other city laments: rather than dwelling on the human dead in the streets, it focuses on the cosmic significance of what was unmade — the Ubshukkinakka, the divine assembly hall where the gods met in council; the displacement of the Anunna from their thrones; the scattering of the divine standards and sacred rites that gave Sumer its order. The loss of Nippur is, in this telling, the loss of the world's organizing principle. The text is also more fragmentary than the Ur lament, and several kirugu sections survive only in damaged form.
