Ode XLII

Sheol saw me and was made miserable, and Death cast me up and many with me.

1.

I stretched out my hands and drew near to my Lord,
because the stretching of my hands is his sign.

2.

And my outstretching is the outspread cross,
that was hung on the way of the Righteous One.

3.

And I became useless to those who knew me not,
because I was hidden from those who did not hold me.

4.

And I shall be with those
who love me.

5.

All my persecutors have died,
and those who trusted in me sought me because I am living.

6.

And I arose and am with them,
and I will speak through their mouths.

7.

For they rejected those who persecute them,
and I cast upon them the yoke of my love.

8.

Like the arm of the bridegroom over the bride,
so is my yoke over those who know me.

9.

And as the bridal chamber is spread in the house of the bridal pair,
so is my love over those who believe in me.

10.

I was not rejected even though I was reckoned so,
and I did not perish even though they plotted against me.

11.

Sheol saw me and was made miserable,
and Death cast me up and many with me.

12.

I was gall and bitterness to it,
and I descended with it as deep as its depth.

13.

And the feet and the head it let go,
because it could not endure my face.

14.

And I made a congregation of the living among its dead, and I spoke to them with living lips,
that my word might not be void.

15.

And the dead ran toward me,
and they cried out and said, "Have pity on us, O Son of God."

16.

"And deal with us according to your kindness,
and bring us out from the bonds of darkness.

17.

And open for us the gate by which we may go out to you,
for we see that our death does not touch you.

18.

Let us also be saved with you,
because you are our Saviour."

19.

But I heard their voice,
and I placed their faith in my heart.

20.

And I set my name upon their heads,
because they are free and they are mine.
Hallelujah.
