4Q502 is the longest non-biblical liturgical papyrus in the DSS corpus. Its extraordinary content — a ceremony that gathers old men, old women, young men, young women, boys, and girls together in a communal blessing that enumerates all of creation — has generated the central scholarly debate about its genre.

Baillet titled the text "Ritual of Marriage" (Rituel de Mariage), interpreting Fragments 1–3 as wedding legislation (the man and his wife, the "daughter of truth who walks," the procreation of offspring) and Fragment 24's direct address "to the woman" (אישה) as a blessing formula for the bride. On this reading, 4Q502 is the only Qumran text to describe an actual wedding ceremony.

Baumgarten (1983) and Satlow (1998) proposed alternative readings: the assembled congregation of all ages and sexes, the creation enumeration, and the calendrical-cosmological imagery of Fragment 27 (monthly signs, stars of heaven) suggest a New Year festival or Golden Age ritual rather than a wedding. The community's well-known restriction of women from certain assemblies (cf. the Damascus Document's camp regulations) complicates the picture.

Both readings have textual support. The word אישה ("wife / the woman") in Fragment 24 is direct address to a female figure; but the communal blessing formula of Fragment 19 — "seed of blessing, old men and old women, young men and young women, boys and girls, together with all of us" — sounds less like a wedding than a covenant assembly. The fragment that parallels 1QS iv 4–6 (the "spirit of knowledge" passage describing the inheritance of the sons of truth) may indicate that this ritual was also a covenant renewal ceremony.

Fragment 27's "eternal spirits who serve you continuously, evening and morning" with "the signs of their months" and "the stars of heaven" sets this ritual within cosmic time — the liturgical rhythm of heaven itself. The closing "your plantation" echoes 4Q500's vineyard vocabulary, suggesting a shared symbolic world of the sacred garden.
