I. The Lord Sets His Heart
The lord set his heart on the land of the living.
Lord Gilgamesh set his heart on the land of the living.
He called to his servant Enkidu:
"Enkidu — no man escapes the living by staying among the living.
Let me enter the mountain and set up my name.
Where names are established, let me establish my name.
Where names are not established,
let me establish the names of the gods.
The mountain's nature is Utu's.
The cedar-cutting mountain's nature is the young Utu's."
Gilgamesh took a white kid by the hand.
He held a brown kid, a speckled kid, against his chest.
He raised the sacred scepter to his nose.
He called to Utu in the sky:
"Utu — I am going to the mountain. Be my companion.
To the cedar-cutting mountain — be my companion."
Utu answered him from the sky:
"Young man, freeborn —
what are you to the mountain?"
II. Gilgamesh Prays to Utu
"Utu, let me speak a word to you.
Let me say a greeting — hear it carefully.
In my city, men die. The heart is stricken.
Men are lost. My heart is pained.
I lean over the city wall.
I see the corpse floating down the river.
Shall I too be like that? Shall I be like that?
A tall man cannot reach the sky.
A broad man cannot cover the mountain.

Utu received his tears like a gift.
Like one who shows mercy, he showed mercy.
III. The Seven Companions
The heroes — sons, each born of a single mother — seven of them.
The first, the eldest, had the paw of a lion, the claws of an eagle.
The second — the snake of the heart's core —
The third — the great dragon snake —
The fourth — the fire-scorching one who enters —
The fifth — the master snake, pulling back before the face —
The sixth — like dark surging waters, beating against the mountain —
The seventh — blazing like lightning, none could draw near to turn away.
Like great boats, they bore Gilgamesh across the mountains.
All seven — young warriors, sons of Utu — were given to lord Gilgamesh.
He placed the cedar grove in his heart like joy.
The young lord Gilgamesh placed it in his heart like joy.
IV. The City Roused
Gilgamesh called out through his city like a single man.
He rang through his city like two men together:
"Let the man with a house go to his house.
Let the man with a mother go to his mother.
Let the single man like me stand at my side.
Let fifty men like me take the road beside me."
Fifty men — the sons of the city — stood at his side.
He went to the blacksmith's house.
He set his foot at the gate of the smithy.
The forging of weapons filled out his warrior's strength.
He went to the dark garden and orchard.
He cut ebony, haluppu, apple, and boxwood.
The children of his city went with him.
V. Across the Seven Mountains
At the first mountain, they crossed over — the cedar was not found.
At the second mountain, they crossed over — the cedar was not found.
At the third, the fourth, the fifth, the sixth — they crossed.
At the seventh mountain they crossed.
Gilgamesh cut into the cedar with joy.
Enkidu cut its branches
and brought them to Gilgamesh.
VI. Night Falls — Enkidu's Dream
Night fell.
The young sun Utu turned toward the west, toward his mother Ningal.
Enkidu woke suddenly, shaking from a dream.
He looked around. The night was utterly still.
He reached out his hand — he could not make himself rise.
He called to Gilgamesh — no words would come.
He touched him, but Gilgamesh did not stir.
Gilgamesh, lord of Kulaba, slept deeply, deeply.
The mountain went dark and shadow spread.
The evening star entered.
VII. Gilgamesh Swears
Gilgamesh woke. He swore the oath:
"By the breath of my mother Ninsun,
by my father, the holy Lugalbanda —
until I know this man, whether he is man or god,
I will not turn back to the city.
When I return, may no demon hold me at my mother's riverbank."
His faithful servant rejoiced. Life was sweet.
His lord answered him.
VIII. Enkidu Warns
The lord Gilgamesh said to him:
"My lord — you have not seen Huwawa. I have.
My heart was seized by him.
His jaw is the jaw of a dragon.
His face is the face of a lion.
His chest, when it charges, is like a raging flood.
His forehead is a crushing reed thicket —
no one can draw near.
Young man — if you went there,
your city-mother could not turn you back to her.
Go now, while you live.
Tell your mother. Let her weep while she lives.
Let her cry her tears while she lives.
But accompany me and I will accompany you.
Let us go together and see what we find.
If there is danger — turn back.
If there is a lord — turn back.
Whatever is in your heart —
let us go and see it."
IX. The Forest
Within sixty cubits of the cedar, no one could approach.
Huwawa seized the entrance with his death-eye.
He stared at Gilgamesh — the eye of death.
He shook his head — the head of a guilty one.
"Young man — you came.
The city of your birth-mother will not turn you back."
Gilgamesh's courage fled.
Fear fell upon him.
His feet would not take root.
His knees buckled.
His side fell against the mountain's dust.
X. The Freeborn One Speaks
A freeborn young man, bearing the aura of the gods.
A bull of temper, positioned for battle.
His mother knew he was the greatest.
His wet-nurse knew he was the greatest son born at her breast.
"Do not be afraid. Set your hand to the earth."
With his hand upon the ground, he spoke.
He swore the oath by his mother Ninsun, by his father the holy Lugalbanda.
"If Huwawa comes against me in the mountain —
let my great sister Enmebaragesi become his wife in the mountain,
let MA-tur, my younger sister, become his slave.
Let me enter his auras —
surrender his fear to me."
XI. The Seven Auras Surrendered
His first aura: Huwawa surrendered it.
One of them entered the mountain before Gilgamesh.
His second aura: surrendered.
His third aura: surrendered.
His fourth aura: surrendered.
His fifth aura: surrendered.
His sixth aura: surrendered.
His seventh aura: surrendered.
Enkidu cut the branches.
They bound them at the cedar's roots.
XII. The Face Revealed
The vine-snake's grin opened.
Like vine-wine poured,
Huwawa smiled.
Like a kiss on the lips, he struck the earth.
Gilgamesh shook with terror.
He called to Utu:
"Utu — you raised me.
I did not know my father. I did not know my mother.
You raised me in the mountain.
By heaven I swear.
By earth I swear.
By the underworld I swear.
Take him with your hand. Do not let the land take him."
Gilgamesh seized him.
He planted his feet like a wild bull on open ground.
He bent Huwawa's neck to the earth.
He set his mouth down.
"By the breath of my mother Ninsun,
by my father, the holy Lugalbanda —
while I live, let my teeth show.
Bring me back to the city of my mother."
XIII. The Plea and the Anger
Huwawa said to Enkidu:
"Enkidu — say a good word for me.
Let the hired man who serves say a good word for me.
Say it to him on my behalf."
Enkidu's anger rose.
He cut off Huwawa's neck.
He placed it in a skin bag.
XIV. Before Enlil
They brought it before Enlil.
Before Enlil's face, prostrating themselves,
Enkidu threw off the bag.
He uncovered the head.
Enlil looked at the head of Huwawa.
He turned to Gilgamesh:
"Why did you do this?
Was Huwawa given to you?
Your faces must sit before it.
Let them eat your bread. Let them drink your water."
XV. The Auras Distributed
His first aura was given to the field.
His second aura was given to the river.
His third aura was given to the reeds.
His fourth aura was given to the lion.
His fifth aura was given to the palace.
His sixth aura was given to the forest.
His seventh aura was given to Nungal.
