Tirunavukkarasar (c. 7th century CE), known as Appar ("Father"), is one of the three great Nayanmars whose hymns form the Tevaram. Born into the Vellala community, he briefly adopted Jainism before returning to Shaivism after a miraculous healing at Tiruvadigai. His devotion is marked by its physical immediacy — he composed many hymns while ill, in prison, or in exile — and by its unguarded anguish. Where Sambandar commands, Appar confesses. The Fifth Tirumurai is the fourth of the seven Tirumurais, the second of Appar's three collections, comprising 49 patikams.
The collection opens at Kōyil — the Temple, Chidambaram, where the Nataraja dances — and moves outward through the sacred geography of Tamil Shaiva devotion. The form label "திருக்குறுந்தொகை" (Tirukkunthogai, Sacred Short Anthology) marks the entire Fifth Tirumurai as a distinct sub-corpus within the Tevaram.
Patikam 5.001 — Kōyil (Chidambaram)
திருக்குறுந்தொகை — Tirukkunthogai. 11 verses. Each verse ends differently; the first verse plays on the recurrence of "-ன்னம் பாலிக்கும்" (nourishes/sustains), the refrain shifting its meaning through wordplay.

The Little Hall of Tillai — nourishment, like food itself.
Golden nourishment — beyond this earth, yet here.
In what manner does it nourish? Seeing, I rejoice.
Oh, this very life — still nourished, still.

திருக்குறுந்தொகை — Tirukkunthogai. 10 verses. Refrain: "Look! This is whom we worship" (கண்டீர் நாம் தொழுவதே). Each verse is a catalogue of comparisons — the Lord is as X, as Y, as Z — ending with the exhortation to witness and bow. Tiruvaratthurai is an ancient Shaiva temple in the Kaveri delta, Tamil Nadu.
