Translation

A 26

A deed was done, and its fruit did not vanish. King Kṛkin raised honor for the Buddha; gifts were made; a stūpa was remembered; prophecy and anointing stood at the far end of merit. What is offered in faith does not fall into the void.

Elsewhere the pretas suffered thirst. The Gaṅgā itself seemed dry to them, for karma had made water into torment. Evil action bore its fruit, and beings wandered under the heat of their own deeds.

Then compassion brought water. Hands were joined in reverence. Those who had suffered came toward the Buddha, and the gift became more than water: it became a gate through which mercy entered the field of pain.

Thus the avadāna teaches without softness and without despair. Action ripens. Gifts ripen. Cruelty ripens. Compassion ripens. The Buddha receives those who come, and even the thirsty may find relief when merit is made and offered rightly.
