Translation

THT 117

The king climbed the palace and rejoiced in color, garments, rank, and sight. From above he saw beauty, order, and the signs of command. He saw the delight that comes to rulers, and the mind was pleased by what power had gathered.

THT 118

But the teaching did not leave him there. It set before him the low places also: dust on the ground, garments of outcastes, dead bodies, blood vessels, stones, and the hard memory of things that pride would rather forget. A palace view is not the whole of the world.

The ruler is taught to endure what is disagreeable. A harsh word, an unwelcome sight, a loss of pleasure, the presence of blame, the nearness of death: these are not reasons to abandon the path. They are occasions to learn whether the heart is ruled by Dharma or by comfort.

Therefore do not give up when displeasure comes. Do not let splendor make you blind, and do not let ugliness make you cruel. A king is not praised for delight alone, but for restraint, justice, patience, and the strength to remember truth when power would make him forget.
