A Reconstructed Tocharian Reading

Translation

A 392 — 7.11-17

Praise to the Worthy One, whose compassion stands where the world is dark. Wrong view and doubt seize beings, Brahmins and common people alike, but the Buddha's light is not overcome.

A 422 — 6.25-29

Great power is not praised for itself. It is praised when it becomes mercy. The Lord of beings is praised because his wisdom gives sight to those wrapped in night, and because his compassion reaches the world that cannot heal itself.

H 149.35 — 12, 6d-end

Mahākāśyapa, Ānanda, and the noble ones stand near the revealed good. The poem gives Sanskrit and Tocharian names so praise may be carried faithfully. Let darkness be named as darkness; let compassion be named as compassion; let the Worthy One be praised.

IOL Toch 74 — 1.18a-21c

Praise to the Worthy One, whose compassion stands where the world is dark. Wrong view and doubt seize beings, Brahmins and common people alike, but the Buddha's light is not overcome.

IOL Toch 202 — 10.8a-14a

This Good Works Translation was made from inspected Tocharian transliterations/transcriptions for the witnesses grouped here as Varṇārhavarṇastotra Fragments, indexed by CEToM. The reconstructed English reading is independently derived from the source text and lexical controls exposed in the source records. Existing CEToM translation-control lines, where present, were consulted only for checking the direction of difficult or damaged passages and were not copied as the English body.

The source is damaged and discontinuous. This page is therefore a reconstructed reading from damaged witnesses, not a restored Tocharian base text and not a complete-work claim.

Compiled and formatted for the Good Work Library by the New Tianmu Anglican Church, 2026.
