A Good Works Translation from RIIG BDR-12-02 and BDR-12-03

Two small altars from Glanum preserve compact Gallo-Greek dedications to local female divine powers: the Glanic Mothers and the goddesses called the Listening Ones. Both use the bratou decanten gratitude and tenth-offering formula, and both keep the local religious vocabulary close to the stone.

BDR-12-02 — Altar to the Glanic Mothers

Cautious Translation

To the Glanic Mothers, a grateful tenth-offering.

Translation Note

RIIG's Lejeune edition reads ματρεβο γλανεικαβο βρατουδεκαντεν: two feminine plural datives followed by the votive formula. The donor is not named and the verb is omitted. The translation therefore keeps the line as an elliptical dedication rather than turning it into a full sentence with an invented subject.

BDR-12-03 — Altar to the Listening Goddesses

Cautious Translation

Cornelia, to the Listening Ones, in gratitude.

Translation Note

RIIG gives the main French rendering as "Cornelia, to the Listening Ones, in gratitude (?)" and also records an alternate interpretation, "to the Very Famous Ones." The cautious English follows the Listening Ones interpretation while keeping the divine name as an epithet rather than a smoothed modern goddess-name. The final votive formula is abbreviated; RIIG notes that the omitted ending may have been -εν or -εμ.

Cluster Note

Both altars come from Glanum and preserve Gallo-Greek dedications using the bratou decanten gratitude/tenth-offering formula without the verb dede. The pair belongs with the fragmentary Belenos basin but is kept here as its own readable Glanum cult cluster because both objects preserve complete dedicatory sense.
