Codex VI
An apocalyptic history of the world divided into three aeons — Flesh, Psyche, and Spirit — culminating in the destruction of the archons and the triumph of the imperishable thought. Nag Hammadi Codex VI, pages 36–48.
The Concept of Our Great Power.
And whoever will know our great power will become invisible. And fire will not be able to burn him. And he will be purified, and he will pass beyond every bond that holds you. For everyone in whom my form will be revealed — he will be saved, from seven days to one hundred and twenty years.
These are the writings of our great power, so that she might write your name in the great light and complete their thoughts and their works, so that they might be purified and scattered and saved, and gathered into the place where no one in it will see me, and you will see me, and you will prepare your dwelling places in our great power.
Know what has come to pass, so that you might know what is living — what it has become, what kind of thing it is, how to understand it, what kind of aeon that is, or what kind it is, or how it came to be. Why do you not seek what kind you will become? How indeed did you come to be?
Consider what kind the water is — that it is immeasurable, that it cannot be grasped, with its beginning and its end. It bears the earth. It breathes in the air. This is the one in whom are the gods and the angels. And the one who is exalted above all these — fear is in him, and the light — and these writings are revealed in him. I gave them to the service of the creation of the flesh, for no one is able to stand in the presence of that one, nor has the aeon of life the power to look upon him. He has what is in him, thinking in holiness.
Then look at the spirit, and you will understand that it is one. He gave it to human beings, that they might receive life from it every day, since he has his own life within him, and he gives to all.
Then the darkness, together with Hades, found fire. And he who would shatter it from within — his eyes could not bear my light. When the spirits and the waters were stirred, the rest of creation came into being. And the whole aeon of creation, and their powers, which fire produced from the flesh — the power came to be in the midst of the powers. And the powers desired to see my image. And the soul came to be in its likeness. This is the work that came to be for them — what kind it is — for before it came to be, he could not see, because the aeon of the flesh would come to be in the great bodies. And they were counted as great days in creation.
For when they were defiled and entered into the flesh, the father of the flesh — the water — rendered his own judgment. For when he found Noah righteous and worthy, the father of the flesh commanded the angels, and he preached their piety for one hundred and twenty years. And no one listened to him. And he made an ark of wood, one hundred cubits. And the one he had found entered into it. And the cataclysm came.
And in this way Noah was saved, with his children. For if the ark had not come to be, for a person to enter into it, the water of the cataclysm would not have come. In this way he intended and thought of the gods, and the angels, and the powers of greatness, all of them — and the luxury and the way of life. And he changed them in the aeon, nourishing them in perpetuity. And the limit of the flesh dissolved. He stood, only the power standing.
Then now the psychic aeon too — it is a small one, bound with bodies, begetting in souls, defiled. For the defilement of the first creation found occasion. And it begot every working — many workings of wrath, deception, envy, jealousy, a grudge, slander, murder, war, robbery, and evil counsels, sorrows and pleasures, obscenities and slanders, deceits and sicknesses, judgments of vengeance, imposed according to their desires. While you still sleep, while you still dream!
Taste and eat the true food. Give out the word and the water of life. Cease from the evil desires and wishes and the dissimilar things — evil heresies that have no foundation. And the mother of fire was not able — she sent fire upon the soul and the earth. And she burned all the houses that are in it. And her shepherd went out, she was destroyed. And again, if she does not find anything to burn, she will destroy herself. And he will become bodiless, without body. And he will burn matter until it is purified completely, and all wickedness.
For whenever he does not find anything to burn, he will gather himself to himself until he is destroyed. Then, in this aeon which is the psychic one, the person who knows our great power will come into being. He is noble, and he will know it. He will drink from the mouth of the mother of fire. He will speak in parables. He will preach of the aeon that is to come,
just as he spoke in the first aeon of the flesh — in the time of Noah. And concerning the words that he speaks, he spoke in all of them in seventy-two tongues. And he opened the gates of the heavens with his words. And he put to shame the one who is over Hades. He raised the dead. And his lordship was dissolved.
Then a great disturbance came to be. The archons of error rose up against him. They wished to hand him over to the one who is over Hades. Then one of those who followed him — they knew him. A fire seized his soul. He handed him over, since no one knew him. They acted and seized him. They brought upon themselves a judgment of their own. And they handed him over to the one over Hades. And they gave him to Sasabek Ahenberot. He prepared him to go down, so that he might convict them. Then the one who is over Hades took him.
And the manner of his flesh did not find him to seize him, to reveal him to the archons. But he was saying: "Who is this? What is it?" His word dissolved the law of the aeon. He is from the word of the power of life. And he prevailed over the command of the archons. And they were not able in their work to rule over him. The archons searched for the one who had come into being — they did not understand that this is the sign. They did not dissolve it. And the change of the aeon — this is it: the sun set for four days, the day became dark, the demons were disturbed.
And after these things he will be revealed, walking upward. And the sign of the coming aeon will be revealed. And the aeons will be dissolved. And those who will understand these things that are spoken to them will become blessed. And they will be revealed, and they will become blessed, because they will understand the truth: "You have rested upon the heavens."
Then many will follow him, and they will work in the places of their begetting. They will walk and lay down his words according to their will — but not according to his. Look, for the aeons have passed, being these: what kind of water is the water of that aeon that has been dissolved? What kind of aeons are they? How will people prepare themselves and stand and become imperishable aeons?
But first, after his preaching — he preaches of the second aeon, and the first. And the first aeon passes at its time. He made the first aeon, walking in it, until it passed, preaching one hundred and twenty years in number. This is the perfect number that is highly exalted. He established the boundary of the West of peace, and he destroyed the East.
Then your seed, and those who wish to walk after our great word and his preaching — then the error of the archons prevailed. They were put to shame in their dissolution. And they wished — they turned to life. The cities were disturbed, the mountains were dissolved. The archon came, with the archons of the places of rest, to the East — for the place where the word was first revealed.
Then the earth shook. And the cities were disturbed. Then the birds ate. And they came forth from their dead. The earth mourned, together with the inhabited world. They became desolate. Then when the times were completed, then wickedness rose up greatly, even to the end of the word.
Then the archon of the West rose up. And from the East he will do a work, and he will instruct people into his wickedness. And he wishes to dissolve all teaching of the word of wisdom of truth, loving the deceptive wisdom. For he extended his hand to the ancient one, wishing to bring in wickedness and to place upon himself an air of dignity. He was not able, because the greatness of his defilement and his garments — then he unveiled himself and was revealed. And he wished to exalt himself and destroy that place.
Then the time came — it drew near and changed. And the time came, even until the little child grew. When he reached his maturity,
then the archons sent the imitator to that person, so that they might know our great power. And they expected from him that he would perform a sign for them. And he performed great signs. And he reigned over the whole earth, and over those who are under heaven. He set his throne upon the edge of the earth: "I shall make you god of the world." He will perform signs and wonders. Then they will turn away in their hearts and go astray.
Then those people who will follow him will bring in circumcision. And he will judge those who are in the uncircumcision, which is the people. For indeed he sent many heralds beforehand, preaching for him. When he will have completed the time that was appointed for the kingdom of the earth, then the purification of souls will come, because wickedness has prevailed greatly.
All the powers of the sea will shake and dry up. And the firmament will not pour down dew. The springs will cease. The rivers will not flow down to their source. And the waters of the springs of the earth will dry up. Then the depths will be laid bare and open. The stars will grow large. And the sun will cease. And I will withdraw, together with everyone who will know me. And they will enter into the immeasurable light, where there is nothing of the flesh to seize them, nor the luxury of fire to burn them. They will be holy and incorruptible, having the holy garments, which the fire is not able to touch.
Then darkness and wind and a moment — so that his thunder will swallow the arrows. Then he will come, destroying them all. And they will be punished until they are purified. Then the time that was given to them, to which they were appointed, is one hundred and sixty-five years.
Whenever the fire has burned them all, and whenever it does not find anything to burn, then it will perish by its own hand. Then it will be completed [...] the power [...] it is the spirit to come from wisdom [...]
Then the firmament will fall down to the abyss. Then the children of matter will perish, and they will not be from this moment on. Then the souls will appear, being holy in the light of the power, which is exalted above all powers — the immeasurable, the universal. I, and all who will know me, and they will be in the aeon of beauty and the aeon that is not dissoluble, prepared in wisdom, having given glory to the one who is in the undivided unity, without fear. And they see him, because of his will that is in them. And they all became images in his light. They all became light. They rested in his rest.
And the souls that are being punished — he will cast them out. And they will be in purity. They will see the holy ones and cry out to them: "Give us the power!" — the power that is above all powers. For [...] and in the judgment of vengeance that exists [...] toward him with their eyes. And they do not seek after us, nor do they believe in us. But they acted — the creation of the archons and its other archons. And we did according to the genesis of the flesh of the creation of the archons, giving law.
We too have come into being in the imperishable aeon.
The Concept of Our Great Power.
