This page translates Kern fragments 286-287 from the Astrologica section of Otto Kern's Orphicorum fragmenta. Kern prints these fragments under On Planetary Entries, a technical astrological section on what happens when one planet enters the place of another, or stands in angular positions such as the ascendant, setting place, midheaven, or under-earth place.

These things are Dorotheus' teaching; but Orpheus too says the following about planetary entries.
Saturn's Entries
Saturn entering Jupiter causes failures in life. He is a destroyer of possessions, scatters a woman's marriage, and harms every work.
Saturn entering Mars is responsible for constraint, bonds, and diseases. He brings pain on account of children, signifies destruction of possessions, and makes some people exiles from their fatherland, or else hired laborers and poor.
Saturn entering the Sun completes actions with toil. One must avoid sailing and journeys because of fear of robbers.
Saturn entering Venus makes relatives and friends hostile. He brings deceptions, disturbances, and losses. A man who has a wife will be ashamed because of her wantonness.
Saturn entering Mercury signifies quarrels, lawsuits, losses, disturbances, and unjust deaths of relatives. One must avoid marketplaces and avoid sharing one's affairs with others, for he produces plots and deceptions.
Saturn entering the Moon produces removals from places, chronic diseases, or destruction and loss of possessions.
Saturn entering his own place signifies migrations, wanderings in foreign places, disturbances, prison, bonds, deaths of parents, and disappearance of household and money.
Saturn entering the ascendant transfers a person into another country, and also produces deceptions, losses, and dangers.
Saturn entering the midheaven leads a person into a foreign land and gives reputation, but brings grief because of debt.
Saturn entering the setting place or the under-earth place either drives a person away from ancestral houses and possessions, leads him into foreign country, makes people war-captives, or kills slaves.
Jupiter's Entries
Jupiter entering Saturn makes the practice of life uneven. At one time he gives acquisition of fields, foundations, and houses, or the management of another person's livelihood. At another time he causes people to fail in their former works and actions, bringing expenses, losses, and long illnesses to some.
Jupiter entering his own place releases a person from whatever afflictions he finds and provides gains. He also brings empty rumors and talk, unless he happens to be fixed in his own house.
Jupiter entering the Sun gives idleness in actions and destroys households, either by diseases or by loss of possessions; he brings a vain end to labors and an opposite result.
Jupiter entering Mars is good. If he finds someone in evil, constraint, and affliction, he releases him from everything. If he finds someone living in joy, he gives even greater gladness, makes friends from greater persons, provides possessions, harms enemies, and gives gains and reputation.
Jupiter entering Venus signifies unexpected wealth, shows a person above his enemies, gives marriage to the unmarried, gives children to the married, and brings completion to actions.
Jupiter entering Mercury makes friends of great men, whose presence people trust for managing affairs. Such people increase their own house, receive gifts from friends, and are glad, while they grieve their enemies. If they have a lawsuit, they win. Still, Mercury's place must be in good condition.
Jupiter entering the Moon gives children to the married, and good fortune and gain to those in court. After causing a little harm earlier, he later provides victory and good success. Sometimes he also adorns some people with golden chains.
Jupiter entering the ascendant and the setting place is mixed, for good and bad alike. Sometimes he brings lawsuits, battles, losses, and enmities; sometimes he releases from these things and gives gains and possession. At one time he signifies friendship, at another widowhood, shameful talk about marriages, and disturbance because of these things. Often he also causes the murder of a relative and provides inheritance from such events, and he brings the wanderer back to his fatherland.
Jupiter entering the midheaven and the under-earth place signifies deaths of parents, diseases, toils, and afflictions. To some he provides marriage; others he removes from their fatherland. The end of the actions will be laborious.
Mars' Entries
Mars entering Saturn preserves whatever Saturn is accustomed to harm, for he stops all diseases and pains and gives wealth, victory, and gladness.
Mars entering Jupiter is destructive and harsh. Expenditures of money will be in vain. He harms in lawsuits and raises up enemies. For pregnant women the embryos perish, or, once born, die very quickly. He signifies harms and outrages, causes removals from places, makes actions useless, brings pain because of children or wife, gives enmities from rulers, and anger from the people.
Mars entering his own place removes a person from his place, or makes diseases, or bloodies him with iron, or burns him with fire. Yet for livelihood he grants accomplishment and renown.
Mars entering the Sun lessens possessions and is bad in actions. He makes pains and harms the mind, and grieves some people because of hidden deeds. If he is also fixed, he stirs more difficult uproars and battles through affairs, gives ancestral hatred because of old matters, and brings betrayals from friends and enmities.
Mars entering Venus: expect battle and anger from a woman. He often produces separation and suspicions of adultery; sometimes women even plunder everything belonging to the men.
Mars entering Mercury produces losses and lawsuits, most of them false and deceitful, and disgraces from hidden works, deceptions, perjuries, betrayals, exiles, and bonds.
Mars entering the Moon: if the zodiacal sign is feminine, fear only disease, especially of the eyes. If it is masculine, he disturbs the practice of life. If he is also fixed, he does so even more: he deprives a person of children, kills brothers, brings dangers and uproars, leads into foreign country, changes the household, and gives one work after another, unless Saturn's zodiacal sign happens to prevent these things. In all the angular places he is harsh, bringing instability, disturbances in households, and pains in life, especially through marriage in the setting place. He also produces untimely births. In the midheaven, he disgraces the marriage-bed of spouses, or brings diseases in that angular place.
The Sun's Entries
The Sun entering Saturn brings memories of ancient things, and gives wealth and joy to life.
The Sun entering Jupiter grants great renown, good reports, gladness, and makes people visible from obscurity.
The Sun entering Mars lays a person low with disease or removes him from his fatherland. He destroys money, causes involuntary losses, makes an enemy out of friends, and stirs disturbances from one's own people, unless Jupiter too comes there by entry.
The Sun entering himself or the Moon produces diseases and lack of money, and moves people from their own places. Yet often he also brings wealth out of afflictions.
The Sun entering Venus causes instability and disturbs the house on account of women, but in matters of gifts he provides gains.
The Sun entering Mercury deceives the mind and grieves the soul, making deceptions and vain expenses.
The Sun entering the angular places removes people from their houses into other places, produces diseases, and makes the body harshly afflicted. In the midheaven, however, he grants accomplishment and renown.
Venus' Entries
Venus entering Saturn signifies added possession and reputation among the people, and helps from hidden things. But she works badly for marriage, for she overturns it or otherwise:

Venus entering Jupiter brings ripening outcomes, dangers, diseases, enmities, lawsuits because of relatives, and quarrels in households and among kin. If the man's wife is pregnant, she miscarries.
Venus entering Mars brings factions, expenses from women, removal from a place, and disturbances in life.
Venus entering the Sun produces instability, makes the mind wander, weakens actions, and produces listlessness, blame, and factions among one's own people.
Venus entering herself is mixed and laborious: in one way good, in another bad.
Venus entering Mercury signifies inheritances, increases possessions, brings completion in actions, and provides victories in lawsuits.
Venus entering the Moon signifies joy and delights a person in actions. She gives gain without toil, joins in marriage, and, if she is in a feminine zodiacal sign, produces childbearing.
Venus entering the ascendant and the midheaven is cheerful, bright, successful, and makes possession and gains greater. If she is also fixed, she does so still more.
Venus entering the under-earth place produces hidden sufferings and griefs from wives. If she is also fixed, she produces sufferings of the genitals and seat, loss of respectable persons, and brings tears upon households.
Mercury's Entries
Mercury entering Saturn increases actions and possession, and harms enemies.
Mercury entering Jupiter is wholly good, giving gains from trade, making friends of visible persons, and providing reputation and power in households.
Mercury entering Mars indicates practical results, releases from fears, and puts an end to labors.
Mercury entering the Sun is unstable for craft and action until he has passed through the Sun's degrees; after this he is successful.
Mercury entering Venus grants wealth, other people's money, and inheritance from the dead:
and from wives and kin,
kindness throughout the house.
He also makes friends from children and slaves.
Mercury entering the Moon creates factions among relatives, disturbs the people, and stirs falsehoods, quarrels, and slanders in marketplaces, unless he looks upon a benefic. Often, when he observes in this way as a benefic, he makes this craft profitable.
Mercury entering the ascendant and the midheaven gives friendship of great men, trust by means of words, and honors among the people.
Mercury entering the setting place gives pains, enmities, anxieties, and lawsuits because of wretched loans.
Mercury entering the under-earth place gives worse dangers and harms from hidden and old matters.
The Moon's Entries and Aspect Rule
The Moon entering Saturn and Mars gives idleness, hesitation, losses, and dangers from a height or from bloodshed: one from Saturn, the other from Mars. With the other stars she is good.
The Moon entering the Sun or herself:
grants sluggishness of spirit
and idleness together.
In the angular places she sometimes causes removals of residence.
One must not consider only these entries, but also those by trine, square, opposition, and sextile. For whatever a planet signifies in the nativity by fixed position, it signifies the same kind of things in the entries. For example:
Saturn, making a trine
to Jupiter,
is very good.
And:
Saturn, being in trine
with fiery Mars,
is greatly best.
Kern Fr. 287 — Mars Entering Saturn's Place
In Vatican Greek 1056, verses of Orpheus explain the same favorable Mars-into-Saturn rule:
When fiery Mars
passes into
Saturn's place,
he is auspicious.
For there
he darkened
all the heart-pains
of Saturn.
The bad
turns into good.
For he stopped
all griefs
and diseases,
and brings wealth
into houses.
He brings victory
and gladness,
and will raise up
renown.
The accompanying paraphrase explains:
These things are understood this way: Mars is good when he comes into Saturn. He removes all the painful things under Saturn, stops diseases, and increases wealth, victory, gladness, and reputation.

ἡ Ἀφροδίτη εἰς Δία, πέψεις, κινδύνους, νόσους, ἔχθρας, κρίσεις διὰ τοὺς οἰκείους καὶ ἐν τοῖς οἴκοις καὶ τοῖς οἰκείοις φιλονεικίας· εἰ δὲ ἡ τούτου γυνὴ ἔγκυός ἐστιν, ἐκτιτρώσκει. ἡ Ἀφροδίτη εἰς τὸν Ἄρην στάσεις καὶ δαπάνας ἐκ γυναικῶν καὶ τόπου μετανάστασιν καὶ ταραχὰς εἰς τὸν βίον. ἡ Ἀφροδίτη εἰς Ἥλιον ἀκαταστασίαν ποιεῖ καὶ τὸν νοῦν πλανᾶι καὶ τὰς πράξεις καὶ ῥαθυμίας ποιεῖ καὶ ψόγους καὶ στάσεις ἐν τοῖς οἰκείοις. ἡ Ἀφροδίτη εἰς ἑαυτήν· κοινή ἐστι καὶ ἐπίμοχθος, πῇ μὲν ἀγαθή, πῇ δὲ φαύλη.
ἡ Ἀφροδίτη εἰς τὸν Ἑρμῆν κληρονομίας δηλοῖ καὶ κτήματα αὐξάνει καὶ τέλος ἐν ταῖς πράξεσιν ἐπιτίθησιν· καὶ ἐν δίκαις νίκας παρέχει. ἡ Ἀφροδίτη εἰς τὴν Σελήνην εὐφροσύνην δηλοῖ καὶ ἐν πράξεσι τέρπει, κέρδος ἄμοχθον διδοῖ καὶ γάμῳ συζεύγνυσι, καὶ τεκνογονίαν ἐν θηλυκῷ ζῳδίῳ οὖσα ποιεῖ. ἡ Ἀφροδίτη εἰς ὡροσκόπον καὶ μεσουράνημα ἱλαρὰ καὶ φαιδρὰ καὶ εὔπρακτος καὶ πλείονα τὴν κτῆσιν καὶ τὰ κέρδη ποιεῖ, εἰ δὲ καὶ στηρίζει, ἔτι πλέον.
ἡ Ἀφροδίτη εἰς τὸ ὑπόγειον κρυπτὰ πάθη καὶ λύπας ἐξ ἀλόχων, εἰ δὲ καὶ στηρίζει, καὶ μορίων καὶ ἕδρας πάθη ποιεῖ καὶ τῶν κοσμίων ἀπώλειαν καὶ δάκρυα ἐπιφέρει τοῖς οἴκοις.
ὁ Ἑρμῆς εἰς τὸν Κρόνον αὔξει τὰς πράξεις καὶ τὴν κτῆσιν, τοὺς δὲ ἐχθροὺς βλάπτει. ὁ Ἑρμῆς εἰς Δία πάντῃ ἀγαθός, ἐξ ἐμπορίας κέρδη διδοὺς καὶ φίλους ποιῶν ἐμφανῶν καὶ δόξαν ἐν οἴκοις παρέχων καὶ κράτος. ὁ Ἑρμῆς εἰς Ἄρην ἐμπράκτους δηλοῖ καὶ τῶν φόβων ἀπολύει καὶ τέλος τοῖς πόνοις ἐπιτίθησιν. ὁ Ἑρμῆς εἰς Ἥλιον ἄστατος εἰς τέχνην καὶ πρᾶξιν, ἕως διέλθοι τὰς μοίρας τοῦ Ἡλίου, μετὰ τοῦτο γὰρ εὔπρακτος.
ὁ Ἑρμῆς εἰς Ἀφροδίτην πλοῦτον καὶ ἀλλότρια χρήματα δωρεῖται καὶ κλῆρον ἐκ τεθνεώτων,
ἐκ δ᾽ ἀλόχων πηῶν τε φιλοφροσύνην κατὰ δῶμα,
ποιεῖ δὲ φίλους παίδων καὶ δούλων. ὁ Ἑρμῆς εἰς Σελήνην· τοῖς μὲν οἰκείοις στάσεις καὶ τὸν δῆμον ταράσσει καὶ ἐν ἀγοραῖς ψεύδη καὶ φιλονεικίας καὶ διαβολὰς ἐγείρει, ἐκτὸς εἰ μὴ ἀγαθὸς ἴδοι. πολλάκις γὰρ οὕτως ἐπιθεωρήσας ἀγαθὸς ἐπικερδῆ τὴν τούτου τέχνην πεποίηται.
ὁ Ἑρμῆς εἰς τὸν ὡροσκόπον καὶ τὸ μεσουράνημα φιλίαν μεγιστάνων καὶ πίστιν ἐκ λόγων καὶ ἐν δήμοις τιμάς· εἰς δὲ τὸ δῦνον λύπας καὶ ἔχθρας, φροντίδας, κρίσεις, διὰ δάνεια οἰκτρά, εἰς δὲ τὸ ὑπόγειον χεῖρον κινδύνους καὶ βλάβας ἐκ κρυφίων καὶ παλαιῶν.
ἡ Σελήνη εἰς μὲν τὸν Κρόνον καὶ Ἄρην ἀργίαν ὄκνον καὶ ζημίας καὶ κινδύνους ἀφ᾽ ὕψους ἢ ἀφ᾽ αἵματος· τὸ μὲν ἐκ τοῦ Κρόνου, τὸ δὲ ἐκ τοῦ Ἄρεως· ἐν δὲ τοῖς ἄλλοις ἄστρασι καλή. ἡ Σελήνη εἰς τὸν Ἥλιον ἢ εἰς ἑαυτήν
νωχελίην θυμοῦ καὶ ἀεργείην ἅμ᾽ ὀπάζει,
ἐν δὲ τοῖς κέντροις ἐνίοτε μετοικίας ποιεῖ.
οὐ χρὴ δὲ μόνας ταύτας τὰς ἐπεμβάσεις σκοπεῖν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰς κατὰ τρίγωνον καὶ τετράγωνον καὶ διάμετρον καὶ ἑξάγωνον· οἷα γὰρ ἐν τῇ γενέσει κατὰ πῆξιν σημαίνει, τοιαῦτα καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἐπεμβάσεσιν· οἷον
Ζῆνα τριγωνίζων Φαίνων μάλα γ᾽ ἐσθλὸς ὑπάρχει

εἰς δὲ Κρόνου Πυρόεις τόπον αἴσιός ἐστιν ἀμείβων.
ἔνθα γὰρ ἠμαύρωσε Κρόνου θυμαλγέα πάντα.
καὶ κακὸς εἰς ἀγαθὸν τρέπεται· πάσας γὰρ ἀνίας
καὶ νούσους κατέπαυσεν· ἄγει δ᾽ ὄλβον τε δόμοισι
νίκην τ᾽ εὐφροσύνην τε φέρει καὶ κῦδος ἀνέξει.
νοοῦνται δὲ ταῦτα οὕτως. ὁ Ἄρης ἀγαθὸς εἰς Κρόνον ἐρχόμενος· πάντα γὰρ τὰ ὑπὸ Κρόνου λυπρὰ ἐξήλειψε· καὶ τὰς νόσους ἔπαυσε, πλοῦτον δὲ καὶ νίκην εὐφροσύνην τε καὶ δόξαν αὔξει.
