What comes first of his great wisdom —
that is his eternal name,
to be cherished in the heart and performed in days to come.
The mighty son of Ninsumun —
he brought what comes later to the fore.
He raises his arm in greeting to the song.
What he has fashioned — good things proceeding from the heart —
they shine by themselves.
II. The Scribal King
I am a king born of a king, a queen bore me.
I, Shulgi, a man of noble birth —
destined for happiness from the trusting heart.
In my youth it was the tablet house.
The tablets of Sumer and Akkad — I mastered the scribal art.
No one like me in noble birth has inscribed clay.
In the scribal art, in the place of expertise, I surpass all.
Additions, subtractions, accountings —
I completed the counting to the utmost.
Nanibgal, the pure — Nisaba —
gave me broad hearing and alert understanding.
I am a scribe who leaves nothing behind,
whom nothing surpasses.
III. The Hunter and Warrior
When I rise up like a leopard,
racing powerfully like a wild cat,
it brings joy to the heart of heaven.
For my exuberance, Enlil sounds a true cry.
They gave me the scepter for my justice.
They set my foot on the neck of all lands.
My weapon — its name is set in the south.
My battle cry, struck down, is placed in the north.
In battles of contest I go out
toward the place where Enlil decreed.
I have marched at the front of my army.
When I look, the field shines clear.
I go about placing delight in weapons —
the bronze lance, the mace —
who can match them in my hands?
I know the striking power of the quiver strap.
When I strike south and north with violence,
flying like the force of the north wind —
it does not seize my heart.
The mountains give off a divine terror to the earth.
My companion, my friend, is young Utu.
In the faithful place, he sees me.
I, Shulgi — when brilliance shines, I speak with him.
He is the god of the beautiful eye in my battle.
Young Utu, beloved of the mountain —
the lamma-spirit of my weapon.
By his word I am made strong,
by his word I am vigorous.
When battle is joined tree to tree,
Utu rises for me.
The weapon of the north, good to me, is chosen.
Southward to Elam it falls against their cry.
However much the rebel land rises against my weapon —
its people, like grain fallen to dust,
fill Sumer and Akkad.

IV. The Hunt on the Steppe
When I walk in princely fashion,
when I go out hunting the living creatures of the steppe —
the lion, the leopard, the great serpent —
when they come near, when they retreat,
their heroic roar fills the steppe around me.
From the front I will not flee.
From the flanks I will not fall back.
I will arm the strong arm — the weapon will not fall.
In the white-toothed day, the bronze spear is planted in life.
At their roaring, my chest will not pull back.
I will not flee to sit aside.
Like a hero slaying heroes
I act in the steppe with speed and joy.
Where the cry of the wild ox sounds,
where the foot is cut in the steppe —
I silence them there.
From this day to a distant day,
no one will say: "That one was beaten but once."
My lion who completed the weapon —
the number of its strikes cannot be counted.

V. The Archer
Shulgi — god of young manhood, foremost of the army.
In the forest I set the net;
in skill I draw the bow.
What is released from my two hands —
the arrow hits it.
The great wild bull, the bull of heaven,
the bison, the auroch — they roar.
Their heads tossing at the mountain's foot —
into the arm of my strength I drive the toothed arrow.
Like an ancient watchtower, may the prey fall.
Its head, like a broken quern-stone,
may it touch the ground.
The gazelle, with steppe power, racing —
its entrails hung from the arrow.
One lift of my arm — it holds to the ground.
Not one of the clan escapes.
I am the male with eyes straight ahead.
When I go in my course —
I know how to strike the cypress.
What I scatter — its place does not spring up again.
To my mother Ninsumun, who bore me,
I am the child of the five good things and ten good things.

VI. Different from All Kings
I am a king — a perfect hero — different from the land.
Shulgi, trusted one, of great strength.
I am mighty. I am not someone crooked. I do not know evil.
In the river, my barge's neck does not bow.
My army's donkey — its life does not fall away.
Like my companion, young Utu,
when I stand like a lion at the side,
when I wheel back like a leopard —
I am the good groom.
Like a wild ass in running, my strength does not cease.
I go out and my knees do not tire.
I have no rival.
In the dew I am a leaping bull.
My word — nothing is to be spoken against it.
My praise-song — it places its mouth in true judgment.
I am a pure diviner.
In the path of omen-reading, I am Nintur herself.
To perfect the rituals of purification,
to sing praise to the en-priest at nightfall in the cloister —
the chosen ones of the holy heart —
in the south laying down the head,
in the north striking the battle cry.
The word of the gods is most precious.
At the white lamb, the sheep of inquiry,
the oracle is given and given again.
My divination inspires wonder like precious stone.
Good and evil are not confused.
I am a bright heart by myself.
I am a king — the heart of one sheep.

VII. The Musician
I am Shulgi, king of Ur —
and music: let my neck be given to it.
I have not passed by any part of it.
Tigi, adab — the breadth and depth of perfect musicianship —
I know them.
The flute captures the heart.
To make it sound — my arm is not broken for it.
Rising and setting — I have inscribed the wood.
The beautiful third string of the zami-lyre — I know it.
The sound and inner heart of music —
I know its inner workings.
The miritu — what belongs in a fine house —
its hand-play I extend.
The algar, the sabitu — the royal design —
I know the crown-worthy fingering.
The urzababitum, harhar, zanaru —
the urgula, the dim-lu-barge-drum —
I bring their voices out like the great drum,
like the hands of a musician's son drumming.
Those who have no instrument of their own —
someone brings them to my place.
Now I am skilled in their hearts.
To find melody, to draw it out —
steady music does not escape my hand.
The reed flute, the shepherd's pipe,
the breath crying —
placing lamentation.
The steady heart — I know it.
I am the joyful one, I am the one who makes good.
I pass my days in princely delight.
VIII. Joy and Its Boundary
Let any person lay understanding at their own feet.
This thing — in the turning eye —
turned back to the boundary of life.
No one has traversed the bitter mountain's distant neck.
I am the mighty one, trusted by his own strength,
trusted by his own exalted name.
Ninsumun, the mother who bore me —
a mother who bore such a one!
In my anointed courtyard she spoke sweetly of me.
Falsehood has no place in the mouth.
The woman does not let go of the child's hand.
In my palace, joy passes the days.
I, Shulgi — in living, in distant days,
the things I make great —
I am a king, since the days of my fate were decreed.
In living with such good heart —
before Utu, son of Ningal, I am held.

what returns its head — they are stars of heaven.
The awe of the palace's forehead must stand firm.
The measuring rod and line — the city is always being built.
The awe of my forehead — who is its match?
Who is its equal in all lands, like a balance-scale?
The awesome radiance, the hailstorm — in my hand.
Who has such power in the land, like a yoke?
IX. The Five Languages
I know how to strike and release a sin.
In great matters you are present.
Seizing Hilzum, advancing on Elam —
I know how to answer with force.
I am the seed of Sumer's son.
Hero of Sumer — I am the hero.
Thirdly — the people of the dark mountains:
I speak to them.
Fourthly — the Amorite, the man of the mountain:
he stands interpreting the language.
I make all his words right by means of his tongue.
Fifthly — Subir, the one who shouts in the language of the land:
though he is not a child of that city,
he extracts the word in his tongue.
When I make the judgment of Sumer straight,
I return all five languages.
No tongue builds a wall to interpretation in my palace.
X. Justice and Wisdom
My completed judgments — the heart is deeply satisfied.
I am the knowing one — the name of kingship is above.
My assembly laid down — like people who have bent their heads.
The great herald, sounding his voice —
to prostrate with inner fear,
to counsel back and forth, to speak in multitude,
to decree fate in the assembly.
My generals — I know how to counsel them,
I know how to address them.
The word — like a river in its flooding, in its turbulence —
bringing the guilty to me,
stabilizing my great lands.
With the word, like a weapon, I demolish cities.
I am one who has no mother —
I know the heart of the word.
My word — the head pours oil — it is the word of words.
The heart blazing like fire — I know its cooling.
The mouth — like a reed-thicket set on fire —
I know how to cool it.
My word, surpassing the advocate, sets things level on the ground.
I am the person of most precious things.
Humility — its weight, its head, is precious to me.
Nothing of mine is to be extorted.
By the word of An, by the word of Enlil —
the life of the land, the life of all lands, falls into my hand.
I am one whose place does not move,
whose course does not change.
XI. Before the Gods
I know how to stand before the gods.
I know how to cool the heart of the Anunna.
Shulgi — in princeliness, I am the one whose great neck bows in reverence.
Great things — who can equal me in them?
In my joyful heart — who can equal me?
I am one who does not cast away what walks with me.
I am the one who stretches far, who raises the head.
Toward a fraudulent place — I have not gone.
To the great irrigated fields I have given my attention.
For the garden, for the right field —
I planted the tree there.
I gave strength to the mound, the head of the canal, the ditch.
I have great oil, I have great wool.
My grain is exalted.
The heart's desire of the gods' temples —
the heart's center — it grows greatly in me.
I am Shulgi — the life of Sumer.
XII. No Rival
I am a king who has no rival.
Let it be said: my things are great things.
I am a king — what of mine is not grasped?
By my wisdom, my surpassing strength, my justice —
by my firm word, what cannot be destroyed from me —
by my skill in cutting judgment like Ictaran —
since Enlil measured out the strength of the teeming people to me:
Let it be Ur! Let it be the son of Sumer!
Let it be the land of Gutium — the man of Utu's light!
King — for the distant day — for the one:
from my heart, the uprising is never brought against him.
XIII. The Song Endures
From people who have died, laid down from above —
even when understanding is seized in death —
the song from that ancient time, from afar:
to bring it near — the tigi-lyre, the drum —
never falsely found, never returned by mouth in falsehood,
not given as a thing abandoned to be decreed by any lord.
Let its long song be brought to light in my pleasant house.
Let the hand of music hold it.
Let the heart of the land make it glow like a slow fire.
XIV. Dedication and Curse
What it has — from it, evil is glad.
Who has life — may it rise to heaven.
From this day to distant days —
the one who raises up the name of Enlil:
If a king is straight like me —
the praise, the prayer, the song of my expertise,
the strength of my heroism, my footpath —
let the pleasant palace follow that king.
What has spoken pleasantly to him — let the heart be drawn to it.
Let the strength of my care rise up.
Let the exuberance of my song come and come.
With great understanding, let it do thus for him.
The place of his arm — nothing is its equal.
Let all my things be scattered by the hand, let pride be raised up.
Let my good name be found and found again.

The tablet house — forever its form does not change.
The place of knowledge — forever its form does not cease.
My seized wisdom — now, here — it is so.
What is spoken against in all the world —
what is placed in the path, in the word of my song —

May An, Enlil, Utu, and Inana
never confirm falsehood against me.
May no one treat me with treachery.
XVI. The Inscription
On this day — in my inscription —
my city never destroyed, my wall never damaged,
my mountain never shaken like a reed fence,
my praise that never ends at its boundary:
How is it that the singer places it in song?
Knowing is the foremost thing — the eternal name.
Falsehood is not truth — how is it inscribed?
I am a king — my arm's lamma-spirit is its might —
it is the song.
In my footpath the singer has placed it.
Let my song never be destroyed.
Let my word never be cast from any mouth.
I am a king who is good for the land,
from the sprouting of the seed
to the boundary of the teeming people.
My kingship — the things set down in it.
His crown — let it not be lifted from heaven.
His scepter — let it not descend from the royal throne.
I am the mighty one, to whom expertise and wisdom are given.
In my great things, the boundary is complete.
A lion facing the bronze spear — glittering like a net.
A leopard raising its hand — to tear like a comb-made reed.
The wild bull of great strength — whose arm does not turn back,
killed on the steppe, rolling in its mountain.
The mountain — as if what the heart does not draw —
as if what the heart does not reach —

XVII. Closing
The word going from it — who knows? It is false.
The place of the tablet — its heavy word.
My expertise, my might.
The open arm — the place of greeting.
My truth — they answer it with a unified hand,
they tear it at the opened mouth.
The hero — his might — I exceed his might.
Shulgi — his shade is hung over the mountain.
I am the king who dedicated the weapon in the rebel land.
