A Reconstructed Tocharian Reading


This Good Works Translation gives a reader-facing reconstructed reading from the surviving Abhidharmakośa witnesses in Tocharian scholastic witnesses with Sanskrit technical terms.

The source base is 33 inspected CEToM witnesses, with 11 translation-control witnesses used for checking only. The English reading is shaped for ordinary readers while keeping the Tocharian source appendix available for study and verification.


Reconstructed Reading

Thus it is said.

The thought joined with weariness toward saṃsāra is called aversion from the world. Happiness, pleasure, and glad stirring of the heart are called prāmodya, joy. When one has made the noble eightfold path manifest, and because of that path gladness rises at that time, that gladness is joy.

Joy is therefore no loose delight. It belongs to the path when the path has become visible. The heart is stirred because it has seen where it is going. Pleasure that wanders among objects is one thing; gladness born from the noble way is another. The treasury distinguishes them so that the practitioner may know what kind of brightness has appeared in the mind.

The cause by which the mind becomes soft and fit for gathering virtues is called praśrabdhi, serenity. By the power of serenity the mind is disposed toward the gathering of virtues and toward good conduct. As good gold, when softened, is fit for the craftsman's work, so serenity should be understood: it makes the mind workable.

When gold is hard, the craftsman waits; when it has been softened, he can shape it. So also the mind, rough with agitation, resists virtue. When serenity has softened it, giving, restraint, patience, meditation, and understanding can be formed in it. The point of serenity is usefulness: the mind becomes able to receive the work of the Dharma.

Those who seek the opposite of escape from saṃsāra trust the thought of the yogācārin when it accords with the noble path. Truly such is the goodness and bliss of the mind. Non-harm is this: not doing injury. By its power one does not hurt others.

Non-harm guards the door of action. A person may know many divisions of doctrine, yet if the hand and speech still injure beings, the analysis has missed its work. The mind that has become workable must become gentle. The teaching therefore moves from joy and serenity into avihiṃsā, because knowledge without non-harm is unable to serve release.

Shame is the mastery of one's own thought, born from self-control in one intent upon virtues and opposed to shamelessness. By its power one is respected among virtues and among the virtuous. When inclination toward virtues has gone before, the life becomes honorable.

Shame is not fear of public disgrace only. It is inward governance. The practitioner sees the deed before doing it, measures the mind before following it, and stops where shamelessness would rush on. Because of this, shame protects both the individual and the community of the virtuous. It makes the person capable of being trusted.

First the elements of existence are stated; afterward the single things are stated in detail. If the four marks are present, the dharma is called a conditioned dharma. When the nature of matter has come about, space gives no hindrance. The four great elements, and the ten sense fields produced from the four great elements, and invisible form: all of this is called form.

The order of analysis is part of the discipline. First come the broad elements of existence; then the separate things are taken one by one. What arises, remains, changes, and passes away bears the marks of the conditioned. What is conditioned is known through its marks, and what is known through its marks may be released from confusion.

Form is also divided carefully. Earth, water, fire, and wind are the great elements. From them arise the fields of visible and tangible life. Even what is called invisible form is placed under form. In this way the heap of matter is not left vague. It is named, divided, and understood as something made through conditions.

What ripens bears its fruit. A thought free from sinful influences is connected with what is karmically neutral. The separation of powers is known; by skillful illustration the meaning is tamed. In this way designation and form, exertion and power, mark and result, virtue and restraint are distinguished. The treasury of analysis teaches the mind to know each state by its cause, its work, and its fruit.

Therefore the teaching does two works at once. It clarifies the words of doctrine, and it trains the mind that hears them. Joy is known by its relation to the path. Serenity is known by the softness it gives. Non-harm is known by the injury it refuses. Shame is known by the self-mastery it brings. Form, conditioned dharma, ripening, and neutral thought are known by their marks and relations.

The practitioner who learns in this way does not merely collect definitions. He learns where to place his trust, where to restrain himself, where to soften the mind, where to recognize a conditioned thing, and where to see the fruit of action. Analysis becomes a ladder for practice.

So the lesson returns to the beginning. The mind weary of saṃsāra seeks the path; the path gives rise to joy; joy and serenity make the mind fit; the fit mind practices non-harm and shame; the disciplined mind can distinguish dharmas without confusion. The Abhidharma treasury is therefore both map and medicine. It names the states of experience so that the practitioner may cease to wander among them blindly.

When the meaning has been tamed by illustration, the teaching becomes usable. Gold, softness, fruit, marks, fields, powers, and exertion all train the hearer to see precisely. The mind that sees precisely can abandon precisely.

This is the work of the Kośa: to make the path intelligible without loosening its demand.

... thus it is said. The thinking in connection with which weariness or aversion is named ... Happiness, pleasure, joy: this is called prāmodya. Interpretation

The recoverable material is a scholastic teaching on mental factors, dharmas, form, and conditioned things. It defines joy as gladness that arises with realization of the eightfold path. It defines serenity as the softening that makes the mind fit for virtue, using the image of softened gold fit for working.

The ethical section defines non-harm and shame as powers that restrain injury and shamelessness. The analytical section then turns toward Abhidharma classification: elements of existence first, individual things afterward; conditioned dharma where the four marks are present; form as the four great elements, their derived sense fields, and invisible form; karmic ripening as fruit.

The reconstruction joins these as a concise lesson: the mind is made workable by serenity, brightened by joy, restrained by non-harm and shame, and trained by analysis to distinguish what is conditioned, what ripens, and what supports the path.
