A Reconstructed Tocharian Reading


This Good Works Translation gives a reader-facing reconstructed reading from the surviving Araṇemijātaka witnesses in Tocharian A jātaka witnesses.

The source base is 32 inspected CEToM witnesses, with 29 translation-control witnesses used for checking only. The English reading is shaped for ordinary readers while keeping the Tocharian source appendix available for study and verification.


Reconstructed Reading

The king Araṇemi looked with blue eyes upon the ministers and spoke: "Do not scold me. I too must bear the pain of instruction." The ministers stood at the door of the gift-hall with threatening swords, yet they bowed and answered him: "By the good nature of your kingship you have seized our hearts. You are a sanctuary of virtue. We, lord, are unable to bear your anger."

The king spoke sadly: "From a father all are to be protected from danger. How can you command me to drive my own teacher from the country?" The ministers pressed him, and the king asked, "What shall I do?" They warned him not to give gifts, not to ignore command, not to bring misery upon the country. The purohita, bitter and excited, spoke for his own desire and did not care for the suffering of the realm.

Araṇemi heard the counsel of fear. The ministers loved the kingdom and feared its ruin; the purohita loved his own desire and dressed it as prudence. Around the gift-hall there was steel, command, and anxious speech. Yet the king remembered the teacher. If a father protects all from danger, how much more must a king protect the one who taught him the way?

The king answered: "Even if I should starve to death in this very birth, I will not speak against the gift." The Brahmins were brought in quickly. They paid homage. Araṇemi rose toward them, looked upon them with tender and pleasant eyes, and asked why they had come. They said, "We have heard your good fame, that you give away all. We have come so that your noble, gentle thought may be seen. You desire the rank of Buddhahood, do you not?"

The Brahmins did not come to flatter an easy generosity. They came because a report had gone out: here is a king who gives all. Their question pierced the center of the vow. If he desired Buddhahood, then the gift could not stop at safe things. Wealth, reputation, land, royal pleasure, and even beloved life had to stand beneath the vow.

The wish for Buddhahood rose in the king. He gave because the path required giving. The gods Jñānaprabha and Karuṇaprabha came from Tuṣita. The god spoke in the cemetery-tune: gods fall from their happiness, hell beings are tormented by suffering, hungry ghosts are struck by hunger and thirst, humans are afflicted by season and heat, and beings are born in water. The king heard the world of suffering and kept his hand open.

The cemetery-song made the gift wider than courtly fame. Gods fall, hell beings burn, ghosts hunger, humans suffer heat and season, and beings take birth in hidden waters. No rank is secure. No pleasure is a refuge. Araṇemi's generosity was no ornament of kingship; it was the answer of a Bodhisattva who had heard the instability of every world.

King Candramukha later asked, "Tell me truly. Is it you?" Araṇemi pondered long and said to himself, "It is not my principle to tell a lie." Then he spoke: "O great king, I am King Araṇemi." Candramukha fell from his lion-throne, grasped Araṇemi's feet, and cried, "Divine lord, what has befallen you? Who wished to ruin you? Who wished to make you suffer the torments of hell? Who brought you into this misery? What other one has taken your land?"

Truth now cost him concealment. He could have hidden behind misfortune, silence, or another name. Instead he gave the truth as he had given wealth. Candramukha saw a king stripped of the signs of kingship and understood the terror of such a fall. He asked about land, enemies, and ruin, because those are the measures kings know.

Prince Uttara came into the gift. The child spoke to his mother; the king said, "Do not be afraid." The Brahmins grasped the prince. Araṇemi held his son and the golden gift, and the heart tightened in him: "How can I give away Uttara, my dear son of divine appearance, hard for me to release? Yet I turn away from my own sorrow." The prince looked around helplessly as the Brahmins dragged him away.

Here the gift reached flesh. The prince was dear, bright, and hard to release. Araṇemi did not pretend that the heart felt nothing. He felt the tearing and still placed his own grief beneath the vow. The Bodhisattva's giving was not coldness toward the child; it was the refusal to make personal sorrow the limit of the path.

Then the vow was clear. A rain of weapons could fall upon the earth; arrows of revenge could strike the heart; kings could lose land, sons, rank, and joy. Still Araṇemi would not make truth false. He would not let fear command generosity. Giving became the road to Buddhahood, and the gift-hall became the place where a king learned to release even what was dearest.

So the story moves from counsel to vow, from vow to recognition, from recognition to the gift of the son, and from the gift to the storm of weapons. Araṇemi stands where royal duty, filial tenderness, truthfulness, and the Bodhisattva path cross one another. The answer he gives is not ease, but steadfastness: truth remains truth, the gift remains gift, and compassion reaches beyond the fear of loss.

For this reason the jātaka does not praise giving as a small virtue for peaceful days. It shows generosity surrounded by swords, hunger, accusation, recognition, and grief. The king gives while ministers resist him, while another king pities him, while the prince is dragged away, and while weapons threaten the earth. The Bodhisattva path is revealed where every ordinary reason to stop giving has become strong.


Literal Working Translation

Thereupon the king speaks, looking with blue eyes at the ministers: "Do not scold me ... Therefore I too must bear the vexation of instruction from him." The ministers stand with threatening swords at the door of the Dānaśālā and speak to the king: "By the good nature of your kingship you have seized our heart. You are a sanctuary of virtue ... We, lord, are not able to bear this your anger." The king speaks sadly: "From a father all are to be protected from danger. How can you command me to drive my own teacher from the country?" The king speaks: "What shall I do?" ... "Why do you prepare to give gifts, not paying attention to my command?" ... "You refrain from giving gifts" ... "Even if I should starve to death already in this birth, a gift ... such speech I do not offer to say." The purohita, excited into bitterness, speaks for his own desire and does not care for the misery of the country.

... he made efforts for the Buddha rank ... With concentrated mind listen to this jātaka linkage. Then the two Tuṣita gods, Jñānaprabha and Karuṇaprabha, come. The god Karuṇaprabha says ... in the cemetery-ornament tune ... The gods are falling down from their happinesses; hell beings are tormented by suffering; hungry ghosts are struck by hunger and thirst; humans by season and heat; some are born in water.

The Brahmins request. The king says: "Lead them in quickly." The Brahmins pay homage. King Araṇemi rises toward the Brahmins and looks at them with tender, pleasant eyes. They say, "After hearing your good fame as one who gives away all, we have come here. In some way your noble gentle thought will be seen. You desire the Buddha rank, do you not?" Then the king, because of the wish for Buddhahood ...

King Candramukha speaks: "Indeed, tell me. Is it you?" Araṇemi ponders for a long time: "It is not my principle to tell a lie." He says to Candramukha: "O great king, I am King Araṇemi." Candramukha falls from his lion-throne, grasps Araṇemi's feet, and says: "O divine lord, what has befallen you? One wishing to ruin you, or wishing to make you suffer the torments of hell, has brought you into this misery. Tell me the reason. What other one has taken your land?"

Prince Uttara says: "My dear mother! Tell my dear father..." The king says: "Do not be afraid." The Brahmins grasp Prince Uttara; the king holds the prince with one hand and the golden thing with the other. "How can I give away Uttara, my dear son of divine appearance, hard for me to let go? I do not pay attention to my own sorrow." The Brahmins drag Prince Uttara; the prince looks around helplessly. "I will let rain a rain of weapons on the earth and fill the directions with a flood of weapons ... no one in this world could have brought me into this misfortune by his power ... the arrows of a revengeful one have struck me violently in the heart ... now I will perish with the root."


Interpretation

The recoverable story is a jātaka of royal generosity under extreme pressure. Araṇemi gives not only wealth, but reputation, safety, land, and his own son Uttara. His vow is linked explicitly with the rank of Buddhahood.

The source controls preserve several strong scenes: the ministers at the gift-hall door, the king refusing to drive out his teacher, the rebuke against giving, the Tuṣita gods, the Brahmins who come because of his fame as one who gives all, Candramukha recognizing Araṇemi, and Uttara being handed over. The violent weapon imagery gives the emotional register of the crisis.

The reconstruction joins those scenes as a continuous jātaka: Araṇemi chooses truth and giving over royal security, reputation, land, and paternal grief. The result is not an abstract praise of generosity, but a dramatic account of how the Bodhisattva path asks a king to release what kingship most wants to keep.
