A Reconstructed Tocharian Reading


This Good Works Translation gives a reader-facing reconstructed reading from the surviving Bhikṣu-Prātimokṣasūtra witnesses in Tocharian monastic-rule witnesses.

The source base is 33 inspected CEToM witnesses, with 17 translation-control witnesses used for checking only. The English reading is shaped for ordinary readers while keeping the Tocharian source appendix available for study and verification.


Reconstructed Reading

Honorable ones, these rules come to the recitation of the Prātimokṣa.

If a monk makes clothing for himself, the proper color is to be made with proper materials. If he fails to make it proper, there is a Pātayantika offense. If the owner comes for what is his, he may carry it away without offense. If valuables such as gold and silver are found within the monastery boundary or within the dwelling, they may be taken up with the thought, "The owner will take them back." Otherwise the monk is not to take jewels into his own hand.

If clothing is wrongly held, it is to be abandoned. If medicine ordered for a sick monk is procured by himself, it is to be used within the appointed nights. When the time is exceeded, confession is to be made. What supports the body must remain under rule: robe, medicine, bowl, and dwelling all become occasions for restraint.

The novice is first to be held under restraint by the monks, by the community. A monk who knows the matter is not to give a fallen novice support or dwelling as if nothing had happened. A monk should bathe once within a half month, unless there is an occasion: sickness, heat, or another allowed need.

If a novice turns away from the discipline, the community must know it. A monk who gives shelter while knowing the fault shares in disorder. Compassion is not indulgence. The young one is protected by restraint first, so that the robe may become training and not disguise.

If a monk evokes doubt in another monk, there is an offense. If a monk tickles a monk, there is an offense. If a monk plays in water, lies under one covering with a woman, frightens a monk, or orders another to frighten him, there is an offense. If a monk knowingly uses water containing living beings, there is an offense.

The recitation names actions that seem small because small actions shape the communal body. Doubt, teasing, water-play, fear, and careless use of living water all train the mind in the wrong direction. The rule cuts them before they become habits.

If a monk teaches until sunset when he should not, there is an offense. If a monk makes an arrangement with a nun on the same boat, there is an offense. If a monk eats food from another host in a prohibited way, there is an offense. If he goes along one road by agreement with a thief or robber, there is an offense.

The road is also guarded. A monk's companion, route, host, and timing matter. If he travels by arrangement with a thief, he brings suspicion upon the robe. If he shares a boat wrongly, takes food wrongly, or teaches at the wrong time, the act touches the saṅgha and is recited before the saṅgha.

If a monk ordains a man under twenty years of age, there is an offense; that one is not counted as ordained, and the monks are to be reproached. If a monk digs the earth with his own hand or orders another to dig, there is an offense. If a personal invitation is enjoyed beyond its proper time, there is an offense.

Ordination has a measure. A person below the proper age may wear the appearance of the ordained, yet the act does not stand. The monks who performed it are blamed because the community must guard its entrance. Even earth is not to be broken by careless command; the monk learns restraint toward the ground beneath him.

If, while the Prātimokṣa is being recited, a monk says, "I will not learn from you fools; I will ask someone learned in Sūtra, Vinaya, Abhidharma, and Āgama," there is an offense. If a monk stands by attentively for quarrelling and fighting monks, there is an offense. If a monk rises and leaves without permission while a lawful matter of the saṅgha is being decided, there is an offense.

The proud monk who despises the recitation breaks the hearing by which the rule lives. Learning is good, but contempt for those who recite the rule is a fault. The monk must not feed quarrels by watching them with interest, nor walk away when the saṅgha is deciding a lawful matter. The community is guarded by attention in the right place.

If a monk curses the Buddha, there is an offense. If a monk drinks intoxicating liquor, there is an offense. If a monk enters a village uninvited after the allowed time, there is an offense. If he harms the saṅgha by coming at the wrong time after waking early, there is an offense. If a monk tells a lie intentionally, there is an offense.

These rules are recited so that the body, speech, robe, bowl, dwelling, road, water, food, village, and community may be guarded. Let the monk hear them and remain silent where he is pure. Let him speak where he has fallen. Let the saṅgha be protected by restraint, confession, and the memory of the rule.

The Prātimokṣa voice is plain because the monk's life must be plain. It names the act without ornament. If this is done, there is an offense; if that is taken, it must be given up; if the time is exceeded, confession is required. The recitation trains the ear until conduct can recognize itself. A monk who hears well can stop early, confess quickly, and return to purity.

... these thirty Niḥsargika-Pātayantika rules come to the half-monthly reciting of the Prātimokṣasūtra ... confession is to be made ... the clothes are to be abandoned: Niḥsargika-Pātayantika ... medicines ordered by the Buddha for a sick monk, procured by himself, should be eaten within seven nights; beyond that, confession should be made ... if a monk tells a lie intentionally, Pātayantika.


Interpretation

The literal layer is a rule-recitation rather than a narrative. It preserves the cadence "If a monk..." and the recurring offense category Pātayantika, with Niḥsargika-Pātayantika where forfeiture is involved. The recoverable rules concern robes and color, valuables, novices, bathing, water with living beings, nuns, food, travel, thieves, ordination age, digging earth, refusal to learn during recitation, quarrels, leaving a saṅgha matter, insulting the Buddha, liquor, village-entry, medicine, and lying.

The reconstruction keeps that recitation style. It joins scattered rule-lines into a coherent Prātimokṣa voice: the monk hears the rule, recognizes the act, and either remains silent in purity or speaks the fault. The point is the public guarding of conduct by repeated speech.

Existing translation controls were consulted only for checking the direction of difficult or damaged passages and were not copied as the English body.

The source is damaged and discontinuous. This page is therefore a reconstructed reading from surviving witnesses, not a restored Tocharian base text and not a claim that a complete Bhikṣu-Prātimokṣasūtra has survived.
