Monastic Act Formulas in Tocharian


This is a fragmentary Good Works Translation produced by the New Tianmu Anglican Church from inspected Tocharian manuscript transcriptions of the Karmavācanā.

Karmavācanā means the formal speech by which a Buddhist monastic community performs acts: Poṣatha, Pravāraṇā, ordination, rains residence, robe and seat assignments, consent, purity, appointment, and other saṅgha procedures. The surviving Tocharian leaves are damaged, so this page first gives a continuous reconstructed ritual-reading, then a stricter fragmentary translation and source appendix. It is not a claim that a complete Tocharian ritual manual has survived.

The English was made from inspected Tocharian A, Tocharian B, and Sanskrit/Tocharian line texts, with CEToM's translation controls, old edition references, TITUS, and IDP material used for checking.


Reconstructed Reading

The Community Acts by Hearing

This is the speech by which the community acts. A saṅgha act is not private intention, not custom alone, and not silent agreement. It is named, heard, consented to, purified, repeated, and allowed to stand.

The voice turns again and again to the assembly: Pay heed. Let the community hear. What is to be done by the saṅgha? Who has given consent? Who has declared purity? Who is able to serve? When the answer is lawful and no one objects, the act becomes firm.

The speaker does not make the act by force of personality. He carries a form older than himself. First the matter is named. Then the time is named. Then the person is named. Then the assembly is asked to hear. If the saṅgha has reached the proper time, if the saṅgha approves, the act may be done. The words are careful because a careless act wounds the whole body.

Poṣatha and Purity

On the fifteenth day the community performs Poṣatha. A monk declares his own purification before the ceremony and asks to be held pure in regard to the rules that obstruct monkhood. The formula is spoken two and three times, because lawful speech must be stable and heard.

Those absent from the assembly must not be treated as though their voice has no place. Their consent and purity are carried by a representative and announced. What has been announced must be reported. The saṅgha acts as one body only when the members present and absent are handled according to Dharma.

The monk says: "Today is the fifteenth-day Poṣatha of the community. I give consent to the lawful act of the saṅgha. I rejoice. I agree. Hold me as pure in the obstructing dharmas. I will perform the Poṣatha for the fulfillment of the aggregate of moral conduct." The same form is said again, and again. By repetition the vow becomes audible to all.

The Pravāraṇā formula gives approval to the saṅgha matter. The speaker says that he gives consent, rejoices, agrees, and declares lawful purification of conduct. For his sake, let the Pravāraṇā be done.

Consent is not only inward willingness. It becomes effective by the proper words, entrusted to the proper person, carried to the proper assembly, and spoken in the proper order. The formula makes agreement public and accountable.

The monk says before the community: "I, the monk Dharmavarman, invite the venerable saṅgha in three matters. Let the saṅgha admonish me. Let the saṅgha instruct me. Let the saṅgha show compassion to me. If I see an offense, hear of an offense, or suspect an offense, I will correct it according to Dharma." Thus the monk opens himself to communal correction.

The answer is carried back: the consent has been received, the purity has been received. The one who speaks for another may not swallow the word or change it. He must return with what was entrusted to him.

Representatives and the Two Saṅghas

For nuns and representatives of Pravāraṇā, the elder nun speaks. The Karmavācakā, the woman who recites the formal act, speaks. Representatives rise and kneel. A nun names herself and speaks before both saṅghas, distinguishing concealed and unconcealed offenses and matters involving food, accusation, quarrel, and persistent dispute.

Names appear within the formulas because lawful acts concern real persons. Vīryacintā, Udārācintā, Dharmarakṣita, and others stand inside the procedure as people to be appointed, questioned, represented, or recognized by the community.

When a nun speaks, she speaks in her own name and within the hearing of both communities. If there is concealment, it is named. If there is no concealment, that too is named. If there is food to be handled, accusation to be settled, quarrel to be ended, or persistence in dispute to be restrained, the formal word gives the community a clean way to act.

Ordination

In ordination, the candidate, teachers, questioning, readiness, and formal acceptance come forward. What must be asked must be asked. What must be answered must be answered. What the community must hear must be heard.

Ordination is not private inspiration. It is a communal act by which a person is turned toward the rules of the saṅgha through repeated, public, recognized words. The candidate enters not only a way of life but a spoken order.

The candidate is examined. His teachers stand in the act. The assembly hears whether the required things are present and whether the obstacles are absent. The question is repeated because ordination changes a life and because the community must know whom it receives. When silence follows the motion, silence itself becomes consent.

Thus the candidate is not merely welcomed; he is established. He receives his place by the lawful speech of the community and becomes accountable to the same speech thereafter.

Robes, Seats, Dwelling, and Rains

The formulas also govern ordinary things: robes, beds, seats, seniority, dwelling, and the rains residence. Years are counted. Seats and bedding are assigned. The season arrives, and the saṅgha declares how monks will remain and observe the rains.

These matters are practical, but not merely administrative. A community has to sit somewhere, sleep somewhere, wear robes, assign goods, remain during the rains, and do these things without losing the Dharma-form of the act.

Robe matters are named as cīvara-vastu. Bed and seat matters are named as śayyāsana-vastu. Years are counted so that seniority may be honored. A monk who receives a seat receives it through the community's order. A robe given into the saṅgha's care is not seized by appetite but assigned by rule.

The rains residence binds movement. Those who have wandered now remain. The formula gives the season a boundary, and the boundary gives the practice its shape. The saṅgha names the place, the time, and the undertaking, so that the rains are not merely endured but observed.

The Shape of Lawful Speech

The Karmavācanā repeats because repetition protects the act. It names the matter. It asks the assembly to hear. It records consent. It announces purity. It appoints representatives. It says what must be said once, twice, and three times.

These formulas show the Dharma as spoken discipline. A community becomes a community by hearing together, consenting together, purifying itself together, and letting no act stand until the words have been properly carried.

When the speech is complete, the matter rests. The act has been heard, the consent has been carried, the purity has been declared, and the community has performed what it was able to perform. In this way the saṅgha's life becomes ordered: ceremony, correction, ordination, robes, seats, dwelling, and the rains all pass through the same lawful mouth.


Literal Working Translation

Formula and Assembly

The voice repeatedly turns to the assembly: Pay heed. Let the community hear. What is to be done by the saṅgha? Who is able to serve? Who has given consent? Who has declared purity? No communal act is casual. It is spoken, heard, approved, and repeated.

Poṣatha and Purification

Now is the Poṣatha of the community on the fifteenth day. A monk declares his own purification before the ceremony and asks to be held as pure in regard to the laws that obstruct monkhood. The formula is said two and three times. The purified Poṣatha is performed for the fulfillment of moral precepts.

Consent and purity belong together. Those who have not come must have their consent and purity announced. What has been announced must be reported. The community is asked what Poṣatha and Pravāraṇā are, and who among the saṅgha can act as representative. The ritual depends on clear speech before the body of monks or nuns.

Pravāraṇā

The Pravāraṇā formula gives approval to the saṅgha-matter in accord with the Dharma. The speaker says: I give consent, I rejoice, I agree. I declare the lawful purification of conduct for the Pravāraṇā-Poṣatha. For my sake, let the Pravāraṇā be done.

The formula is said outside, twice or three times. The consent given by a monk is reported back: he has approved, rejoiced, and agreed. The lawful agreement of the community is not merely inward willingness; it becomes effective by being carried in the proper words.

Representatives and Nuns

For the nuns and the representatives of Pravāraṇā, the elder nun has to speak. The Karmavācakā, the woman who recites the formal act, has to speak. Three representatives rise and kneel. A nun names herself and speaks before both saṅghas, distinguishing concealed and unconcealed offenses and matters connected with food, accusation, quarrel, and persistence in dispute.

Names survive at the edges: Vīryacintā, Udārācintā, Dharmarakṣita. These are not decorative names in a story; they appear inside formal acts, where a person is appointed, questioned, or represented before the community.

Ordination

In the ordination formula, a candidate, teachers, questioning, readiness, and the formal speech of acceptance come forward in Tocharian and Sanskrit mixture. The ceremony turns a person toward the rules of the saṅgha through repeated, public, recognized words.

What must be asked must be asked. What must be answered must be answered. What the community must hear must be heard. Ordination is not private inspiration. It is a communal act, and the community must know what it is doing.

Robes, Seats, and Dwelling

Cīvara-vastu concerns robes. Śayyāsana-vastu concerns bed and seat. Years are counted, and bedding and seats are given or assigned according to seniority. Such assignments also require lawful words.

These are small administrative words, but they show how the rule-life is embodied. A community has to sleep somewhere, sit somewhere, wear robes, assign property, and do so without losing the Dharma-form of the act.

Rains Residence

In the Varṣāvāsa formula, the time has arrived for the saṅgha. The seasonal act is declared by which monks remain, settle, and observe the rains in the proper way.

The Shape of Lawful Speech

The Karmavācanā repeats because lawful speech must be stable. It asks the assembly to hear. It names the act. It records consent. It announces purity. It appoints representatives. It asks whether the saṅgha has anything to do. It says what must be said once, twice, and three times.

These words are practical, but they are not merely bureaucratic. They show the Dharma as a spoken discipline. A community becomes a community by hearing together, consenting together, purifying itself together, and letting the act stand only when the words have been properly carried.


Interpretation

The Karmavācanā is a collection of formal saṅgha speech. It is not meant to be read like a story; its drama is the lawful creation of communal action through repeated words.

The source controls support a continuous ritual reading centered on Poṣatha, purity, Pravāraṇā, consent, representatives, nuns, ordination, robes, seats, dwellings, and rains residence. The recurring pattern is: name the day, name the act, ask the community to hear, declare consent and purity, repeat the formula, and let the act stand only if the community accepts it.

The reconstruction therefore reads as a ritual manual in English. Buddhist discipline here is not only moral intention but public, audible procedure. A saṅgha remains a saṅgha by speaking carefully, hearing carefully, and acting only through forms that protect everyone involved.
