The Division of Deeds in Tocharian


This is a fragmentary Good Works Translation produced by the New Tianmu Anglican Church from inspected Tocharian manuscript transcriptions of the Karmavibhaṅga.

The Karmavibhaṅga is a Buddhist analysis of deeds and their fruits: intention, accumulation, remorse, giving, poverty and wealth, bad action, good conduct, stūpa offerings, the condition of the world, death, rebirth, and release. The surviving Tocharian witnesses are damaged, so this page first gives a continuous reconstructed reading, then a stricter fragmentary translation and source appendix. It is not a claim that a complete Tocharian treatise has survived.

The English was made from inspected Tocharian B and Sanskrit/Tocharian line texts, with CEToM's translation controls, old edition references, and parallel Buddhist doctrinal patterns used for checking.


Reconstructed Reading

The Path of Deeds

Listen carefully. I will tell the ways of deeds, so that the one who hears may understand what should be done, what should be avoided, and how the fruit of action follows beings.

Mind goes first. Thought prepares the road, and the body and voice follow after it. A deed joined to intention becomes heavy. A deed done without intention is not weighed in the same manner. The wheel of action turns from the mind and follows beings through birth after birth.

The Weight of Intention

Again, a deed may be done and yet not gathered in the same way. It may be unintended, unapproved, or left without clinging. Therefore karma is not event alone. It is event joined to mind.

This distinction changes the strength of the fruit. One being does evil and holds it close. Another trembles before evil, feels shame, confesses, and turns away. One result endures for the full measure of a painful life; another is shortened. The fruit follows the deed, but the deed is shaped by intention, remorse, confession, and the inward posture of the one who acted.

Therefore guard the mind before the deed. A guarded mind softens the path; an unguarded mind makes even a small act grow heavy.

Four Turnings of Happiness and Suffering

There are four ways happiness and suffering turn across time. Some beings are happy first and suffer afterward. Some suffer first and become happy afterward. Some are happy before and happy afterward. Some suffer in youth and continue suffering into old age.

But wealth is not the whole meaning of the teaching. A rich person may still be bound by avarice, and a poor person may still delight in giving. Wealth may come from an earlier gift while stinginess remains because the mind was not trained. Therefore train the mind by giving, so that generosity itself becomes dear.

Evil Deeds and Painful Fruits

There are beings who cling to the ten bad paths and are reborn in painful states. Some fall into hell. Some are born among animals. Some are born among hungry ghosts. Some return again and again to the same kind of birth because the force of the deed has not yet been exhausted.

Which beings have lost their life while their deed has not disappeared? These are those whose life has ended, while the force of action still carries them onward. The life falls away, but the deed remains. Which beings have lost both life and deed? These are known by another turning, when the force that held them in that condition has come to its end.

One who misuses what belongs to the saṅgha plants a bitter result. One who speaks evil, clings to possessions, despises discipline, or follows bad friends prepares suffering for himself. Therefore avoid the bad path before it has become familiar.

The Ten Paths and the World

Body, society, crops, weather, birth, and death are bound together by action. Human conduct spreads outward. When conduct becomes poor, the world becomes poor with it.

Therefore the restoration of the world begins with the restoration of deeds. Guard life. Leave what is not given. Speak truth. Keep harmony. Make the mind clean.

Reverence and Offering

The Buddha, teacher and lord among gods, taught ten advantages from honoring the stūpa of the omniscient one.

The one who honors the stūpa becomes beautiful in rebirth and receives a good voice. His word persuades. When he enters an assembly, the assembly honors him. He becomes dear to humans and gods. He meets powerful beings, meets buddhas and bodhisattvas, obtains great possessions, is born among gods, and soon approaches release from saṃsāra.

The gift of a parasol brings protection. The gift of a bell brings divine wealth and a road toward nirvāṇa. The gift of cloth brings beauty, softness, clean skin, shame, decency, lovely garments, and good possessions. The gift of perfume brings a good scent from the body, a whole sense of smell, and the spread of the scent of virtue in every direction. Flowers are praised in the same way, for the enjoyed good deed ripens toward release.

These offerings are not decorations only. Each deed shapes a future body, a future social world, and a future path. The one who gives toward awakening begins to live inside the fruit of giving.

Good Conduct

Good conduct is a garment. The one who loves noble conduct protects it from the errors that tear it. He is humble in lying down and sitting, receives alms without greed, observes discipline, and keeps shame and truthfulness near the heart.

O Maitreya, the fruits of deeds are drawn from the Buddha's sūtras. May the merit of writing this book be shared with relatives, supporters, teachers, and all beings. May all obtain the excellent nirvāṇa and become buddhas.

Death as Teacher

The thought of death seems repulsive to beings, but when it is understood rightly it becomes dear. It turns the practitioner away from evil in body, speech, and mind. It becomes a friend that urges pure practice.

Those who forget death rejoice in evil as though death were not their companion. Because of that, they are reborn in lower states. But the thought of death checks the mind. It says: train body, word, and thought before the final day arrives.

At death the winds move through the body. They enter and go out; they pierce and cut the vessels. The hands and feet lift and brush the air as if trying to seize the sky. The senses dissolve, the limbs tremble, the body grows cold, and the mourners lament day and night. Death teaches through the body itself.

Old age, illness, time, death, bondage, and rebirth are the conditions of saṃsāra. The mind seeks release from the body, sees old age running toward death, and touches the painful fruit of deeds. The thought of death is dear because it breaks the intoxication that keeps beings asleep.

The Whole Teaching

Thus the teaching on deeds is divided. Mind comes first. Deeds follow. Habits accumulate. Remorse and confession change the strength of what has been done. Joy makes giving pure. Avarice darkens even possession. Evil stains the world. Reverence opens fortunate birth. Death teaches urgency.

The one who wants freedom should learn the division of deeds before the deed has carried him away. Let him guard the mind, avoid evil, give with joy, honor the awakened ones, keep good friends, remember death, and walk the path that ends in release.


Literal Working Translation

The Division of Deeds

Deeds are not flat events. Some are good, some bad, and some mixed. Some have been done and accumulated; some have been done but not truly gathered into the stream of intention. Again and again the question is asked: What kind of deed produces this kind of result?

Mind stands before the deed. The doing of things follows thought, and thought is the first guide. When a deed is joined to intention, it becomes heavy. When a deed is done without intention, it is not weighed in the same way. The wheel of action rises from the mind and follows beings through rebirth.

The teacher says that he will explain the paths of action so that the hearers will know how to act and will not wander blindly among many possibilities. Listen carefully. Understand the ways of deeds. Learn how suffering and happiness come to beings.

Done, Accumulated, and Unintended

The opposite case is the deed done without intention. Such a deed has occurred, but it has not been gathered with the same moral weight. Karma is not only event; it is event joined to mind.

Because of this, the same outward condition may have different strength. One being does a bad deed and clings to it. Another fears it, feels shame, and turns away. One result lasts through a full hell-life; another is cut short. The fruit follows the deed, but the deed is shaped by intention, remorse, confession, and the inner posture of the one who acts.

Four Ways Happiness and Suffering Turn

There are four ways happiness and suffering turn across time. Some beings are happy first and suffer afterward. Some suffer first and become happy afterward. Some are happy before and happy afterward. Some suffer in youth and continue suffering into old age.

Those who give joyfully are reborn among humans in a wealthy house, and wealth increases even as old age comes. Those who are not joined to the good friend called giving make no effort toward gifts or other good deeds; when they are reborn among humans, they are born poor and lack possessions.

This is not simple praise of wealth. Some rich beings are still bound by avarice, and some poor beings still delight in giving. Wealth may arise from a former gift, while stinginess remains because the mind was not trained. Therefore train and educate the mind by giving, so that generosity becomes dear.

Evil Deeds and Their Fruits

There are beings who do bad deeds, cling to the ten bad paths, and are reborn in painful states. Some fall into hell, some among animals, some among hungry ghosts, and some return again and again to the same kind of birth because the deed has not yet disappeared.

Which beings have lost their life while their deed has not disappeared? These are those for whom the force of action remains after one life has ended. The life falls away, but the deed still carries them. And which beings have lost both life and deed? These are recognized by a different turning, when the force that held them in that condition has been exhausted.

The Ten Paths and the World Around Beings

When beings dissolve the ten good deeds and walk the ten bad paths, damage comes into the world. The external things are diminished.

When killing becomes common, beings lose splendor. When theft becomes common, hail, destructive birds, locusts, mice, and worms appear. Seeds and trees lose their fruit. The world around beings answers to the conduct of beings.

Body, society, crop, weather, and rebirth are not separate. Human action spreads outward. The world becomes poor when conduct becomes poor.

Reverence for the Stūpa

The Buddha, the teacher and lord among gods, taught ten advantages from honoring the stūpa of the omniscient one.

The worshiper becomes beautiful in rebirth and has a good voice. His word persuades. When he enters an assembly, the assembly honors him. He becomes dear to humans and gods. He meets powerful beings, meets buddhas and bodhisattvas, obtains great possessions, is reborn among gods, and is soon released from saṃsāra.

The list is not merely decorative. Each offering changes the future body, the future social world, and the future path. The deed makes a world around the one who did it.

Good Conduct

Good conduct is a garment. The one who cares for noble good conduct avoids the errors that ruin it. He lies and sits humbly, eats alms, and observes discipline. Shame and truthfulness stand close to the heart of the teaching.

Bad friends pull beings toward evil. Good friends, giving, restraint, and reverence train the mind. Avoid idle or evil talk, greed, hatred, discord, pride, and disdain. Praise the life in which duty is observed while there is still life to observe it.

O Maitreya, the fruits of deeds are drawn from the Buddha's sūtras. May the merit of writing this book be shared with relatives and supporters, so that all may obtain the excellent nirvāṇa and become buddhas.

The Thought of Death

A striking section praises the thought of death. Death seems repulsive to beings, but when it is considered rightly it becomes dear. It urges the practitioner away from evil in body, speech, and mind. It becomes a friend that pushes one toward pure practice.

If beings forget death, they rejoice in evil as if death were not their companion. Because of that, they are reborn in the lower states. But the thought of death checks the mind. It reminds the practitioner that body, word, and thought must be trained before the final day arrives.

Deeds are divided by intention, accumulated by habit, softened by remorse and confession, strengthened by joy or aversion, and made visible in body, wealth, world, rebirth, and liberation.

Thus the doctrine stands. Mind comes first. Deeds follow. Fruits ripen. Giving trains the mind. Evil stains the world. Reverence opens fortunate rebirth. Death teaches urgency. The one who wants freedom should learn the division of deeds before the deed has already carried him away.


Interpretation

The Karmavibhaṅga is a doctrinal division of deeds and fruits. Its controlling logic is simple but severe: mind comes first, intention gathers the deed, and the fruit follows through body, world, rebirth, prosperity, poverty, suffering, and release.

The reconstructed reading treats the text as a teaching sequence rather than a story. It begins with intention, then distinguishes done and accumulated deeds, remorse, confession, and unintended action. It then turns to the four patterns of happiness and suffering, the ten good and bad paths, reverence for stūpas, gifts, good conduct, bad friends, and death-mindfulness.

The strongest sustained source material supports a long didactic reading: gifts are not decorative, death is not a gloomy aside, and worldly conditions are not morally neutral. Every section returns to the same point: train the mind before action hardens into a future.
