A Reconstructed Tocharian Reading


This Good Works Translation gives a reader-facing reconstructed reading from the surviving Pratītyasamutpāda witnesses in Tocharian A, Tocharian B, and Sanskrit-parallel witnesses.

The source base is 73 inspected CEToM witnesses, with 41 translation-control witnesses used for checking only. The English reading is shaped for ordinary readers while keeping the Tocharian source appendix available for study and verification.


Reconstructed Reading

This is the teaching of dependent arising.

Ignorance stands at the far end of the past. From ignorance formations are made. At the end of those past causes consciousness begins the fruit. With consciousness there are name and form. With name and form the six fields open. From the six fields contact arises. From contact feeling is struck. At the end of feeling, thirst begins the cause that carries beings toward the further end.

Thus the chain is not only recited; it is measured. Some links belong to the past as causes, some to the present as fruit, and some to the future as the next cause and the next result. Ignorance and formations prepare the way. Consciousness, name and form, the six fields, contact, and feeling ripen as experience. Then thirst rises again and makes the wheel turn forward.

From thirst comes grasping. From grasping comes becoming. From becoming comes birth. From birth come old age and death, grief, lamentation, pain, and the whole mass of sorrow. These twelve parts are divided and known: cause and fruit, past and future, each standing in its own place. Beings ignorant of this move as if driven by hidden bonds.

The one who does not know this says, "This is mine; this is myself; this is what I am." But the links are only links. Each stands because another has stood before it. The person who takes the chain for a self is bound by the chain. The disciple learns instead to see condition, arising, passing, and cessation.

The disciple looks upon body, feeling, mind, and dharmas. He sees that things arise through causes. He sees that when causes are absent, the things made by them are extinguished. He sees them without substance, empty, and not fit to be held as self. Thus the whole world is known step by step.

This is mindfulness among dharmas. The four noble truths are not placed outside dependent arising. Suffering is the chain as it is lived. The arising of suffering is the chain as it is fed. The stopping of suffering is the chain with its food removed. The path is the noble eightfold way by which this removal is practiced.

Form is to be regarded like an anthill. As ants enter and leave their mound, so living movement passes through the heap of form. Feeling is like a poisoned arrow. With one hand the healer draws the arrow out; with the other he smears medicine on the wound and brings quiet. This is the measureless sorrow that must be understood and treated.

The anthill has no lordship over the ants; it is a heap through which they pass. So form is a heap through which elements, contacts, and movements pass. The arrow is not decorated or explained away; it is removed. So feeling is not enthroned as self; it is understood as pain, pleasure, and neutrality arising by contact, and the cure is applied through knowledge.

Appearances are like the light of moon and stars in a dark lake. A person reaches into the water to seize them, and each time only the image trembles. Consciousness is bright here and there, flashing and shifting, never remaining as a lord. Divine forms, human forms, hell forms, animal forms, and preta forms pass through the string of deeds as a person sees the cycle of his own forms.

The mind that grasps at the reflection grows tired and gains nothing. The reflection appears, but there is no moon in the hand. So the aggregates appear, but no enduring master is found in them. Consciousness lights one place and then another: eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind, touch, and thought. Its brightness is movement, not sovereignty.

Meeting what is unloved is sorrow. Separation from what is loved is sorrow. Birth is sorrow. Old age is sorrow. Death is sorrow. The sorrows of saṃsāra oppress beings. Yet the noble truth is seen: the eightfold noble path leads to the suppression of sorrow. Here the mind is to be trained. Here the Dharma is heard, learned, written, remembered, and practiced.

Therefore the teaching asks for more than assent. It asks that the mind be trained in the place where contact becomes feeling and feeling becomes thirst. A person who hears the Dharma but does not train remains carried by the chain. A person who hears, remembers, writes, reflects, and practices begins to loosen the next link before it hardens.

When ignorance ceases, formations cease. When formations cease, consciousness ceases. When consciousness ceases, name and form cease. When name and form cease, the six fields cease. When the six fields cease, contact ceases. When contact ceases, feeling ceases. When feeling ceases, thirst ceases. When thirst ceases, grasping ceases. When grasping ceases, becoming ceases. When becoming ceases, birth ceases. When birth ceases, old age and death cease.

Thus the way to nirvāṇa is seen. The cause of the redemption of sorrows is seen. The path is not hidden in another world; it is opened where the causes are known and ended. Whoever crosses foolishness, understands cause and fruit, and trains the mind in the Dharma walks out of the burning house of conditions.

This is why the chain is recited in both directions. Forward, it shows how the mass of suffering is built. Backward, it shows how the mass of suffering is dismantled. The same links that bind beings become the places where wisdom can enter. To know dependent arising is to know where bondage begins and where release may be practiced.

... the proper efforts for gathering possession ... These twelve sections are divided into three parts ... At the end of the cause of the past there is saṃskāra, formations; the beginning of the result is vijñāna, consciousness. At the end of the fruit there is vedanā, feeling; the beginning of the cause concerning the further end, death, is tṛṣṇā, thirst. Birth, old age, and death are counted among the fruits; ignorance, formations, and becoming are counted among causes.

The aggregate of form is to be looked at like an anthill: as ants enter their hill, so form is entered. Feeling pierces like an arrow. With one hand he draws out the poisoned arrow, and with the other hand he applies medicine and makes him quiet. Like moonlight and starlight in a great lake on a dark night: each time one reaches into the water to seize it, one sees only the image. The efforts are empty and deceptive. Consciousness is volatile, glowing now here, now there. Divine, human, hell, animal, and preta forms are pervaded through the string of deeds.

Interpretation

The literal layer preserves the normal Buddhist chain of dependent arising, but it also preserves several Tocharian teaching images. The chain is not only recited as a list. It is divided into cause and fruit, past and future, and the twelve parts are treated as something to be known in their proper places.

The strongest meditation passage comes from IOL Toch 4. It joins dependent arising to the four foundations of mindfulness, the four noble truths, and the noble eightfold path. It teaches that phenomena arise through causes and disappear when the causes are absent. It illustrates form with the anthill, feeling with the poisoned arrow, appearances with moonlight in water, and consciousness with flickering, unstable brightness.

The interpretation therefore joins doctrinal sequence and contemplative imagery. The reconstruction reads as a sermon: first the chain, then the suffering produced by the chain, then the practice of seeing, then the images that loosen attachment, then the reversal that leads toward nirvāṇa.

Existing translation controls were consulted only for checking the direction of difficult or damaged passages and were not copied as the English body.

The source is damaged and discontinuous. This page is therefore a reconstructed reading from surviving witnesses, not a restored Tocharian base text and not a claim that a complete Pratītyasamutpāda has survived.
