A Reconstructed Tocharian Reading


This Good Works Translation gives a reader-facing reconstructed reading from the surviving Supriyanāṭaka witnesses in Tocharian A dramatic witnesses.

The source base is 23 inspected CEToM witnesses, with 21 translation-control witnesses used for checking only. The English reading is shaped for ordinary readers while keeping the Tocharian source appendix available for study and verification.


Reconstructed Reading

Supriya came out from the house and entered the assembly. The purohita stood among the gathered ones and set out the rites, the rules, the combinations belonging to sacrifice. Drums and flutes were lifted away; lutes and wind instruments sounded; the auspicious earth shone with many colors. Around the maṇḍala they laid out the ritual things, and a white serpent appeared as a sign. Then lightning fell, rain pressed upon the sky, fireflies flashed, the cries of animals rose in one direction, and the winds were heard high above.

The people looked on with fear and wonder. Some said that the earth itself might have become a cemetery for them. Others, hearing the discourse, turned from suffering and took confidence. Indra became visible. Bṛhaspati spoke words fit to be heard by a king: "You are the maker of this plan. O savior of the world, with speech born of suffering you have gone forth like the udumbara tree. The excellent truth is nectar in the three worlds. With this trust, accomplish our good. Pay homage to the master."

Then the cakravartin king Supriya fixed his gaze and spoke about the ripening of virtue. "What is life? What is the body? Life rises and perishes like an instant. It passes more quickly than a mountain river. The body, fashioned bit by bit from particles, is dressed by the craftsman of deed in order to deceive us. All that is seen is only the field of visible form. Therefore let no wise one hesitate in doing good. With a tireless mind one should gather merit."

He said to the lord Wekārsa, "I wish to go with you to Pūrvavedīdvīpa. Be ready, with a mind free from hesitation." As soon as Supriya had spoken, Wekārsa floated in the sky. The seven jewels were lifted up, and the king went toward the rising sun like a wheel-turning monarch.

In Pūrvavedīdvīpa the god Pūrvottara came with lute and ploriya before Supriya. With a glad and pleased mind he sang: "Your sweet and pleasant appearance, your lovely unchanging face, is like the moon among the white lotuses of our eyes. By contemplating your form we have obtained confidence. Give happiness and joy to the residents of Pūrvottara. Stay here twenty thousand years and place beings on the path of the ten deeds. Open wide the door to the worlds of gods and humans. Destroy sorrow among hell beings, animals, and hungry ghosts."

Surrounded by eighty-four thousand kings, Supriya went toward the town. The golden wheel moved in the sky. A shower of pearls fell from above. Gems of every desired name rained down, beginning with vaiḍūrya; ornaments, jewels, horses, chariots, elephants, seats, and decorations descended in abundance. The Śuddhavāsa gods rejoiced over the marvel accomplished by Supriya, and the gods spoke of the cintāmaṇi jewel sent by the Bodhisattva. Some descended like great lightning bolts from the sky, some like full moons.

The people of the city, however, stayed behind doors. They barred the houses and peered through cracks. Supriya saw the streets empty and entered deep reflection. "What has become the refuge of this city? The people do not go out in my presence. They neglect the command of the lord and only look at us through openings. Are they afraid to come near me? I will go by other streets and learn why so many roads are empty."

He asked the king for permission to pass through the other streets. The king asked him, "Why, noble one, are you so troubled? Has anything happened that does not suit your mind? Tell me." Supriya answered, "Everything from the lord suits me. I desire to see living beings. I have no wish for pleasure for myself. I have asked to go through the streets for their sake." The king consented, and Supriya went.

Again the people peered through cracks and stayed inside. Supriya returned and said, "Great king, explain this fully. What is the cause here? Hunger has struck them terribly. The streets are empty as if without life. The doors are firmly barred, and the people look out through openings. I ask this wish straight from the lord: I wish to see these living beings enjoying happiness and living well. By seeing them may I also obtain joy in the power of sweet happiness. Even this sight of pain has borne fruit for me."

The king looked at Supriya with love and thought, "Now I have obtained the opportunity to speak. I will make him know the urgent sorrow of beings. Under his power the grief of this country will disappear." Then he said with reverence, "The beings here, thieves, miserable ones, outlaws, murderers, have disturbed the spirit of the country and have come into conflict with their lord."

Supriya resolved to draw the frightened ones out of fear and hesitation. All descended from the vehicle and went on foot to the assembly. The voice of beauty was heard. King Brahmadatta said, "The moon-like lord wishes to come out from the cloud-palace." Drums, shells, lutes, and flutes sounded. The Brahmanic seers offered greeting and blessing: "It is time for the lord to descend from the palace and show love to those who climb the golden tops of houses to greet him."

Then the princess Kañcanaprabhā, daughter of Candra, entered the assembly with flute and pantomime. Her beauty gave the company nectar for the eyes, full of the power of the apsarases. Supriya set his gaze upon her, sweet with nectar, and spoke quietly to his own mind: "Alas, my mind, still untamed by the splendor of beauty, why do you wander? What is there here worth grasping? Have you gone after new delusions? Look closely. These thirty-six masses of impurity form the basis for disgust beneath the sun. This is the body of suffering conditions. Let that truth pierce you through."

Then Supriya was adorned. Viśvakarman spoke to Indra: "The divine guardians have told me the command. I have fashioned the lion-seat as great as Mount Sumeru. I have decorated his body with royal ornaments. Whatever former kings of gods possessed happiness and jewels, Supriya surpasses their excellence and power." Indra rejoiced and said to Varuṇa, "Bring to this jewel of a human the gem and the jeweled elephant. I send these divine ornaments as homage. Let him sit without hesitation on the lion-seat. Let him receive royal dignity without hatred, without enemies, over the four continents, on the path of the ten deeds. The time has come, because living beings must be freed."

The door-warden entered with Supriya, took up the garland-liana, and offered it to him with kingly veneration: "O one marked by royal dignity, this liana is like you in softness. Guide my thought. By your power I have come with confidence to the height of wishes. I hope for excellence from the lord, together with the country, so that we may be happy. May we see beings prosperous, with true companions and trusting faces. We will rejoice in this union; from joy my heart will float."

The king looked at Supriya with an insatiable gaze and said, "Speak with confidence, lovable one. You are in no way neglected by me. As a son trusts his dear father, so all have confidence in your encouragement. I carried you as a burden when you entered the womb. The memory of sonship always exists in you from me." Supriya heard the love of father, city, gods, and friends, and he turned it toward the work of release.

He commanded that the ministers leave the council and prepare the work. "After that I will go. If the seed has been gathered fully by good people, then even a thousand kṣatriya lords may stand ready against me. Show yourselves now to the kings, so that your great confusion of discontent may disappear without remainder. Make joyful the spirits of those who receive alms. The kings of Jambudvīpa will come in great numbers to see me; when even an enemy sees me, hostility will lie down. Receive this command as law, for this is the way of all wheel-turning kings."

Then Supriya went to the forest Kusumaghana. Prince Sunetra praised the place: rivers flowed through emerald meadows; lotus pools opened blue eyes; night-lotuses laughed in the rain; trees stood on the riverbank breathing divine fragrance like a lover breathing love for the beloved. Supriya looked upon the assembly and said, "This forest is silent and fit for the prudent. Keep far from arrogance. Control the spirit and the senses. The places of good ones are never empty. Here even the animals are tamed by prudence. With an untamed mind happiness is hard to obtain; those controlled in body, speech, and spirit rejoice here like bees among flowers."

So Supriya moved through palace, city, sky, assembly, and forest. Gods honored him, kings sought him, women and friends praised him, and frightened citizens hid behind barred doors. He answered all splendor with compassion, all beauty with discipline, all fear with the wish to relieve suffering. Jewels rained down, but the greater gift was the opening of the path: beings were to be made happy, hunger was to cease, hostility was to lie down, and the worlds of gods and humans were to stand open through the ten good deeds.


Literal Working Translation

PK AS 16.1, PK AS 16.5 and PK AS 16.6.2

He came out of the house. The purohita in the assembly arranges the matters belonging to sacrifice and rule. Musical instruments rise; over the auspicious earth there is a multicolored shine. Ritual implements are placed for the maṇḍala. A white serpent appears. Lightning falls; rain oppresses the sky; fireflies are seen; the voice of animals rises; hurricanes are heard above.

This earth would have turned into a cemetery for them. After hearing the discourse, they act in relation to suffering. To King Brahmadatta there comes speech full of nectar. Indra becomes visible. The excellent truth, provided with nectar in the three worlds, is proclaimed. With trust, realize our good; pay homage to the master. Bṛhaspati is worthy to speak to the king: you are the maker of this plan, savior of the world, speaking with suffering speech.

PK AS 17A and PK AS 17B

Life rises like instants, dies, and goes to perishing. More quickly than a mountain river, life and the present pass for all beings. What is life? What is the body? All this is only the dimension of the visible. The body is disguised by the craftsman of deed to deceive us. Then the cakravartin king Supriya, gazing at Wekārsa, says about the ripening of the virtues of the mountain: "I wish to go with the lord to Pūrvavedīdvīpa. Be ready, with a mind without hesitation. In doing good the wise should never hesitate; with a tireless mind one should gather merits." Wekārsa floats in the sky. Having lifted the seven jewels, he goes toward the rising sun like a cakravartin.

The god Pūrvottara comes with lute and ploriya to Supriya and says with glad mind: "Your appearance is sweet and pleasant; by seeing you we have confidence. Give happiness and joy to the residents in Pūrvottara. Staying twenty thousand years in this town, you will put beings on the path of the ten deeds; you will open the door to the worlds of gods and humans; you will destroy sorrow among hell beings, animals, and hungry ghosts." Supriya, surrounded by eighty-four thousand kings, goes to the town, and the golden wheel moves in the sky.

PK AS 17G, PK AS 17J and PK AS 17K

Rain comes from the height of the sky, a shower of pearls. Gems beginning with vaiḍūrya, jewels, ornaments, horses, chariots, elephants, and seats rain down. The Śuddhavāsa gods rejoice at the marvel done by Supriya; they speak of the cintāmaṇi jewel sent by the Bodhisattva; gods descend like lightning bolts and full moons.

Supriya says within himself: "Which has been the refuge of the city? They do not go outside in my presence; they neglect the lord's order; they look through gaps only." He asks permission to go by other streets. The king asks, "Why, noble one, are you distracted? Tell me." Supriya says, "Everything suits me from the lord. I wish to see living beings. This is no pleasure for myself. I have made the wish to go through the streets." The people peer through gaps and do not go out. Supriya asks why the streets are empty as if without life, why doors are barred, and says that he wishes to see beings happy and well alive. The king thinks that now he can make him know the urgent sorrow of beings; by Supriya's power the grief of the country will disappear. He says that thieves, miserable ones, outlaws, and murderers have disturbed the spirit of the country.

All descend from the vehicle and go on foot to the assembly. Brahmadatta says that the moon-like lord intends to go out from the cloud-palace. Drums, shells, lutes, and flutes are heard. The princess Kañcanaprabhā enters with flute-playing and pantomime. Supriya sees her and says to his mind: "O mind untamed by beauty, why do you err? Have you gone after delusions? These thirty-six masses of impurity are the basis of disgust. This is the body of suffering dharmas."

The king, looking at Supriya with insatiable gaze, tells him to speak with confidence; everyone trusts his encouragement as a son trusts a father.

Supriya tells the ministers to leave the assembly and prepare the work. If the seed is gathered by good people, even a thousand kṣatriya lords may stand ready. Show yourselves to the kings so that discontent may disappear. Make joyful the spirits of alms receivers by the gift. The kings of Jambudvīpa will come to see him; hostility will rest; his command is to be received as law.

Supriya comes from his own sacrifice and sees a hall fashioned as if by Viśvakarman. His friends say that they may never be separated from the jewel of his mastery. Viśvakarman says to Indra that he has made a lion-seat like Mount Sumeru and decorated Supriya with royal ornaments. Indra sends the gem and jeweled elephant and tells Supriya to sit on the lion-seat, receive royal dignity without hatred and enemies, because living beings are to be freed. In the forest, Sunetra praises rivers, meadows, lotus pools, and fragrant trees. Supriya says the forest is silent and fit for the prudent: keep away from arrogance; control spirit and senses; happiness is hard with an untamed mind; the controlled rejoice like bees among flowers.


Interpretation

The play presents Supriya as a wheel-turning king whose splendor is tested by suffering. The richest scenes are not merely decorative: the rain of jewels, divine ornaments, musical procession, palace, city, and forest all ask whether public beauty can become public welfare.

The main dramatic movement runs from royal manifestation to compassionate inquiry. Supriya receives divine honor, but then notices that the city is empty. People hide behind barred doors because hunger, crime, fear, and disorder have wounded the country. He asks to see living beings happy and well alive; the king recognizes that Supriya's power can end the country's grief.

The Kañcanaprabhā scene turns the drama inward. Supriya sees overwhelming beauty and rebukes his own mind, converting desire into contemplation of impurity and suffering. The forest scene completes that turn: prudence, restraint, body, speech, spirit, and the ten good deeds become the way by which splendor serves release.
