Buddhist Verses in Tocharian


This is a fragmentary Good Works Translation produced by the New Tianmu Anglican Church from inspected Tocharian manuscript transcriptions of the Udānavarga.

The Udānavarga is a Buddhist anthology of verses on impermanence, desire, diligence, faith, conduct, anger, speech, companionship, mind, and release. The Tocharian text survives in damaged leaves, so this page first gives a continuous reconstructed anthology-reading, then a stricter fragmentary translation and source appendix. It is not a claim that a complete Tocharian anthology has survived.

The English was made from inspected Tocharian A and Tocharian B line texts, with CEToM's translation controls, Sanskrit verse alignments, old edition references, TITUS, and IDP material used for checking.


Reconstructed Reading

The Drum of the Deathless

The Blessed One consents to teach the good Dharma for the world. He considers whom he should teach first, remembers the teachers who have died, and resolves to go on. He will beat the drum of the deathless and turn the wheel that had not yet been turned in the world.

The path of release runs as waters run together into the ocean. Generosity, observance, strength, and wisdom have been gathered through countless ages, and now the dust of thought is washed away. The Dharma is deep, but it is given for gods and humans.

He looks first for Arāḍa and Udraka, teachers worthy of the subtle Dharma, but their lives have already ended. Compassion does not stop. The Dharma is difficult, fine, and deep, yet beings with little dust in their eyes are present. Therefore the Blessed One goes forward. The unopened road will be opened, and the unheard sound will be heard.

Impermanence

The fool says, "I have a son; I have property." Yet he is not master even of himself. What, then, can truly belong to him? Men and women gather and enter the realm of death. They go according to their deeds and receive the fruit of merit and evil.

All accumulated things end in ruin. Rising ends in falling. Meeting ends in separation. Those who make merit go to a good existence; those freed from affliction go to nirvāṇa.

The body itself teaches the same lesson. It will lie on the earth, empty of consciousness, cast aside like a useless log. Youth loses its pleasing face. Old age breaks beauty. Death gathers both men and women into its realm. Therefore the wise look toward the end of birth and old age and seek the crossing beyond birth and death.

Desire

Desire is born from imagination. Knowing its root, the wise one refuses to nourish it. From desire sorrow is born; from desire fear is born. For one freed from pleasures, sorrow is gone, and fear has no place to stand.

Desire is addressed directly: "I know your root." It arises from conceiving, imagining, and returning again and again to the pleasing image. When that food is cut off, the vine withers. A mind freed from pleasure does not tremble before the loss of pleasure.

Virtue and Ripening

The one dear to others is praised in this life and happy in the next. Let him teach, instruct, and keep away what is unseemly. For one whose faculties are well developed, grief falls away and rebirths come to an end.

Faith is provision for the road. With faith one crosses the stream; by wisdom one is purified. Hearing the good Dharma is better than ordinary possessions, because the Dharma leads to nirvāṇa.

Diligence is praised because death does not wait for the lazy. The fool neglects what should be done and does what should be avoided. When death gains power, lamentation comes too late. A single day lived with morality, concentration, wisdom, and meditation is better than a hundred years lived without energy.

The Elder, the Monk, and the Way

Through wisdom one turns away from sorrow. The Tathāgatas teach the way, but what must be done must be done by the hearer. The thorn of craving is destroyed by the path. Śākyamuni attained it in concentration and teaches it in assemblies: the single sure road beyond birth and old age.

Conduct, Companionship, and Speech

The monk should attend to monkhood carefully. He should not envy others, despise robe or food, or grow tired of discipline. For the pure, every day is observance.

Tame yourself. With the self well tamed, one is guarded. Anger should be struck down at the root. Endurance is the highest strength, and the balanced person has no place for anger to arise.

The elder is not made by white hair alone, and the monk is not made by appearance alone. The one called a wanderer has removed impurity; the one called noble has walked the way. Company shapes the person. A poisoned arrow can poison clean arrows in the same quiver, and evil friends spread their stain. Therefore the wise keep company with the faithful and good.

Mind, Body, and Release

The world is furnished with pride, and people cling to what has been obtained and what is still desired. The wise are unmoved by blame or praise, like mountains unmoved by wind.

The mind must be protected. Having seen the body as like a jar, like foam, and like a dwelling, one should hold the mind firm like a city and fight Māra with the weapon of wisdom.

The true monk is not shaken by happiness or sorrow. He has diminished hatred, crushed the thorns of village life, and gives up this world. The anthology ends with custody and community: a book belongs to a monastery, is recited, guarded, studied, and handed on for the sake of release.

Bad deeds bring fear here and beyond; good deeds bring joy here and beyond. Even a hidden deed follows the doer. Praise and blame move through the world, but the wise stand like a mountain unshaken by wind. When the mind is guarded and wisdom is raised like a weapon, Māra finds no open gate.

Thus the verses become a road: the Buddha teaches, impermanence awakens urgency, desire is cut at the root, faith and wisdom guide the traveler, companionship is chosen carefully, anger is restrained, the body is seen clearly, and the mind is protected until release.


Literal Working Translation

Opening of the Teaching

The Buddha consents to teach the good Dharma for the world. The all-knowing one has arisen in Magadha and agrees to proclaim the excellent, deep law. Soon he will open the way to the deathless for gods and humans.

He considers: To whom should I first teach this fine and difficult Dharma? With compassion he looks for the old teachers. Udraka has died in the evening; Arāḍa has died days before and has passed into another birth. The Blessed One will go on. He will beat the drum of the deathless and turn the wheel that had not been turned before in the world.

The good path runs toward release as water runs together into the ocean. The noble way frees beings from evil. The highest one among gods and humans is worthy of worship. Through countless ages he gathered generosity, observance, power, and wisdom, and through that store of virtue the dust of thought is washed away like dirt under rain.

Impermanence

The fool worries, saying: I have a son; I have property. But the self is not truly possessed, and what could belong to one who is not his own master? Men and women gather and enter the realm of death. They go according to their deeds and receive the fruit of merit and evil. Evil action leads downward; good action opens a higher birth.

All accumulated things end in ruin. Rising ends in falling. Meeting ends in separation. Those who have made merit go to a good existence; those who become free from affliction go to nirvāṇa.

Shame on vulgar old age: it destroys the face that once pleased the mind. Life ends in death. This body will lie on the earth, empty and without consciousness, streaming with foulness. Therefore those who delight in meditation, who are collected and zealous, should look toward the end of birth and old age and cross beyond birth and death.

Desire

Desire, I know your root. You are born from imagination. Therefore you will not exist for me. From desire sorrow is born; from desire fear is born. For those freed from pleasures there is no sorrow, and how could fear remain?

Diligence

Whoever knows what is good for himself should make effort. The fool turns away from what should be done and does what should not be done. When death gains power over him, he laments like a cart whose axle is broken.

Virtue, Evil, and Ripening

The one who is dear to others is praised in this life and happy in the next. Let him teach, let him instruct, and let him keep away what is unseemly.

Faith

The Dharma leads to nirvāṇa. With faith one crosses the stream; by wisdom one is purified. Wisdom directs the traveler. Other possessions are of little value compared with hearing the good Dharma. Faith becomes provision for the road.

The Elder and the Monk

A monk is not made by appearance alone. A monk is one who has removed impurity. Therefore he is called a wanderer: he has left the impure behind.

The Way

The path is straight and calls for effort. It is like the certain road by which birds go to the water. Śākyamuni attained it in concentration and teaches it in assemblies. Seeing the end of birth and old age, the compassionate one proclaims the single sure way.

Monastic Conduct

For the pure, every day is observance. The manner of one restrained from desire succeeds.

Hearing and Speech

A single day lived by one who is moral, concentrated, wise, and meditating is better than a hundred years lived badly, lazily, and without energy.

Companionship

Company shapes the person. If one keeps company with one who does evil, a bad name follows. A poisoned arrow poisons unpoisoned arrows in the same quiver. Therefore one should not make friends with the evil. Association with the evil is bad; the wise should befriend the faithful and the good.

Pride, Deeds, and Blame

This world is furnished with pride. People cling to what has been obtained and what is still to be obtained. The wise one, concentrated, overcomes pride. Those who rejoice in service are not found at fault; the one with eyes sees through things.

When bad has been done, even secretly, one grieves. When good has been done, one rejoices, even if the deed is past, far away, or hidden. A person rejoices here and beyond after doing good; a person who has abandoned the Dharma fears death because of bad action.

Closing Trace

At the end of one leaf a book-note remains: this Udānavarga book belonged to Porociṃ Monastery and was not to be taken away without permission. Even the colophon keeps the anthology inside a community of study, recitation, custody, and release.


Interpretation

Udānavarga is an anthology-path rather than a single plot. The reconstruction therefore makes a continuous teaching sequence from the recoverable verses and chapter themes.

The strongest movement is from the Buddha's consent to teach, through impermanence, desire, diligence, virtue, faith, monkhood, companionship, pride, deeds, mind, anger, and release. Each section stands as a verse-cluster, but the page reads them as one course of instruction.

The closing monastery note matters because the book itself belongs to practice: it is copied, guarded, recited, and kept for the community. That is why the reconstruction ends with custody as well as doctrine.
