A Reconstructed Tocharian Reading


This Good Works Translation gives a reader-facing reconstructed reading from the surviving Vinayavibhaṅga witnesses in mostly Tocharian B vinaya witnesses.

The source base is 58 inspected CEToM witnesses, with 35 translation-control witnesses used for checking only. The English reading is shaped for ordinary readers while keeping the Tocharian source appendix available for study and verification.


Reconstructed Reading

The Blessed One was dwelling in the cities of the monks, and the conduct of the saṅgha was brought into the light. A bowl was not to be set where the wind passed, nor where rain fell, nor where water was released, nor where filth would touch it. It was not to be broken intentionally. It was to be guarded carefully. A monk was not to seek another alms bowl for himself. If the matter had been wrongly taken up, it was to be given up in the community.

The bowl was a small object, but the rule around it was wide. A monk carried his hunger, his dependence, and the trust of householders in that vessel. If he placed it carelessly, broke it deliberately, or sought another through desire, the fault did not remain small. What had been taken up wrongly had to be released before the saṅgha, because use without restraint becomes possession.

At Kauśāmbī the monks were vexed and irritated. Conduct was seen, heard, and known. A word born from enmity and a word born from ignorance were to be abandoned. No monk was to hide behind silence and say, "I speak neither good nor bad," when the community had seen the manner of his behavior. Wrong speech was itself a matter for discipline.

The rule gives no man a way to vanish into clever speech. If he says nothing good and nothing bad, yet his conduct is known, the community still has a matter before it. Enmity makes one kind of word; ignorance makes another. Both are to be given up, because speech is part of conduct and conduct is public in the vowed life.

At the river Ajiravatī monks went to bathe. A monk tickled another monk; if he tickled him, he committed an offense. Even with a householder, the measure of the act was counted. Water was splashed with the palm of the hand. The queen Mallikā saw from the upper palace and called to the king, "Look!" What seemed playful became shame before the householders and a rule for the saṅgha.

The river scene teaches how quickly play becomes disorder. The water, the hand, the laughter, the palace above, and the royal eye together expose the act. The monk's body is never merely his own body in public; it carries the robe. When householders see carelessness, confidence is weakened. Therefore even bathing receives a measure.

At Rājagṛha a monk named Dhanika took the king's wood without permission. The Buddha heard and blamed him. If a monk takes what has not been given, calculating as a thief calculates, the act follows the measure of theft. If a king would seize him, beat him, bind him, banish him, or say, "You are a thief, you are foolish, you are mistaken, you are a robber," then that monk is cut off from residence among the monks. Moving a heavy thing even by the width of a finger with the mind of a thief becomes the sign of the offense.

The measure is inward and outward at once. The thing may be wood, heavy or small, moved only a finger's width, but the mind calculates as a thief calculates. The king's judgment reveals the social shape of the act, while the Buddha's blame reveals its religious shape. To take what has not been given is to cut the root of trust.

The places of theft are many: roof, cell, tree, earth, under the earth, sky, air, water, boat, chariot, field, village boundary. The forms are many: gathering thieves, taking footed, two-footed, four-footed, and many-footed beings, covering a thief, hiding a thing, damaging a thing, ordering another to damage it. When the condition is complete, the grave fault is complete.

The list stretches across the whole inhabited world. Theft can occur above, below, in a house, in a field, in water, on a road, or through another person's hand. The discipline follows the deed wherever it hides. No monk can make the world large enough to escape the rule.

At Śrāvastī, Upananda sat in a house where desire and embarrassment arose. A monk was not to sit with a woman in a hidden or covered place. A monk was not to enter a house where sexual intercourse was taking place or about to take place in order to shame the householder. Water was to be examined for living beings. A monk who failed to look carefully might injure what lived there.

Here restraint turns toward both desire and kindness. Hidden sitting threatens purity; entering at the wrong moment wounds householders with shame; careless water harms living beings. The same discipline guards the monk, the laity, and the small life that might be destroyed through inattention.

After meals the Buddha gathered the community and blamed what had been done. A monk was not to sit or lie naked. A sitting mat was to be made by measure and extended properly. A bed-roll was prepared. In the morning the alms bowl and robe were carried into Śrāvastī; after the meal the monk went to the Andhavana forest to sit in meditation. Even the mat beneath the body had a rule, because the vowed life rests on exact conduct.

Thus the discipline was spoken case by case. The bowl, the robe, the mat, the house, the river, the hidden place, the gift, the king's wood, the word of anger, and the careless hand all entered the path. What is done privately is heard by the community. What harms trust is named. What must be given up is given up. What must be confessed is confessed. A monk becomes pure by letting even ordinary acts stand before the Dharma.

If a monk tickles a monk, there is a Pātayantika offense. As much as he tickles him, so much he commits the offense. Even with a householder ... they went to the river Ajiravatī to bathe ... King Prasenajit saw with Queen Mallikā from the upper palace ... the queen called out to the king: "See!" ... in the water, by the palm of the hand ... concerning all such cases, Pātayantika.

With non-human beings, with animals, even with a chicken, Pārājika ... with magic creatures and non-human beings ... sexual connection, step by step, in all cases, Sthūlātyaya. Buddha was staying in Rājagṛha. A monk named Dhanika took away King Ajātaśatru's wood without permission. The Buddha heard and blamed him. If a monk, calculating as a thief, takes for himself what has not been given, in such a way that a king would beat him, bind him, banish him, or call him thief, foolish, mistaken, robber, that monk is deprived and should not live with the monks. Interpretation

The recoverable cases form a practical vinaya sequence. They are not abstract law. They show how a fault becomes visible: a bowl is mishandled, monks behave shamefully at water, a monk takes royal property, Upananda embarrasses householders, water containing living beings is handled carelessly, a mat or bed-roll is used without proper measure.

The legal categories range from forfeiture and confession through Pātayantika and Sthūlātyaya to Pārājika. The concrete details matter because the discipline is embodied. Bowls, mats, water, houses, wood, women, kings, householders, and public shame all become places where the robe either holds its meaning or loses it.

The reconstruction therefore joins the cases as a sequence of communal correction. Conduct is seen, heard, and known. The Buddha hears and blames. The community receives what must be given up. The monk's private intention is tested by public measure. The point is not punishment for its own sake, but the preservation of a trustworthy saṅgha.
