Hymn to the Aṅgirases

Rigveda X.62 is a sūkta (hymn of praise) from Maṇḍala 10 of the Rigveda, one of the 1,028 hymns organized within the ten books of the oldest Veda. The Rigveda was composed approximately 1700–1100 BCE in Vedic Sanskrit and preserved through oral transmission across millennia.

This is a Good Works Translation produced for the Good Works Library from the Sanskrit of the Śākala recension.

1. You who were anointed with sacrifice and sacrificial gift, and won the friendship of Indra and immortality — good fortune be to you, O Aṅgirases! Accept what is Manu's, you of wise mind.

2. You fathers who drove out the wealth of cattle, who by the power of truth broke open Vala at the turning of the year — long life be to you, O Aṅgirases! Accept what is Manu's, you of wise mind.

3. You who by the power of truth made the sun climb the sky, who spread wide Mother Earth — good offspring be to you, O Aṅgirases! Accept what is Manu's, you of wise mind.

4. This one speaks sweetly at the center, in your house; O seers, sons of the gods, hear that. May good sacred speech be yours, O Aṅgirases! Accept what is Manu's, you of wise mind.

5. These seers, of many forms, deep in their inspired trembling — they are the sons of Aṅgiras, born from Agni.

6. Those of many forms who were born from Agni, born from heaven — the Navagva, the Daśagva, foremost of the Aṅgirases — together with the gods, he gives generously.

7. With Indra as their yoked companion, the singers broke open the pen holding cattle and horses. Giving me a thousand notch-eared cows, they won fame among the gods.

8. Now let this Manu flourish; let him grow like a young shoot — he who at once gives generously a thousand cows and a hundred horses.

9. No one can reach him, no more than one can grasp the ridge of the sky. The gift of Sāvarṇya has spread wide like a river.

10. And two servants of foreign speech, equipped together, rich in cattle, for attendance — Yadu and Turva gave them generously.

11. May Manu, the thousand-giving leader of the clan, come to no harm; may his gift go forth, striving alongside the sun. May the gods lengthen the life of Sāvarṇi, under whom, unwearied, we won the prize.

Translator's note: verse 1's "mānavam" (literally "belonging to Manu") has no stated noun; it is rendered here as "what is Manu's," an offering associated with the patron Manu named later in the hymn. Verse 10's "smaddiṣṭī" (dual, describing the two servants) is uncertain in its exact sense and is rendered conservatively as "equipped together."
