Hymn to Vāyu and Indra-Vāyu

Rigveda IV.47 is a sūkta (hymn of praise) from Maṇḍala 4 of the Rigveda, one of the 1,028 hymns organized within the ten books of the oldest Veda. The Rigveda was composed approximately 1700–1100 BCE in Vedic Sanskrit and preserved through oral transmission across millennia.

This is a Good Works Translation produced for the Good Works Library from the Sanskrit of the Śākala recension.

1. O Vāyu, the bright first portion of the sweet soma has been offered to you at the rites that seek heaven. Come, desired god, with your yoked team, to drink the soma.

2. Indra and Vāyu, you two deserve to drink these soma drops. For the drops flow toward you both together, as waters flow to low ground.

3. O Vāyu and Indra, mighty ones, lords of strength, riding in a single chariot — come with your yoked team, for our help, to drink the soma.

4. The much-desired teams that are yours, O heroes, promised to the one who offers — grant those to us, O Indra-Vāyu, bearers of the sacrifice.

Translator's note: "niyut" (verses 1, 3, 4) names the yoked team of horses or wind-steeds proper to Vāyu; it is rendered here simply as "team" or "yoked team" rather than with an invented English term.
