O Indra, thou art the friend of mankind, the defender of all who seek thy protection. Thy heart is turned ever toward those who worship thee in truth. The Adityas call thee blessed; the Vasus acknowledge thy supremacy. Thou art the father of all prosperity, the giver of all good things.
When a man crieth out to thee in his anguish, thou hearest his voice and comest to his aid. Thou defendest him against his enemies; thou savest him from all manner of peril. His foes flee before thy approach; his troubles are scattered like clouds before the wind. Thus thou provest thyself a true friend to those who trust in thee.
The soma flows like honey for thee, O mighty one. When the priests pour out the sacred draught, thy strength doth increase sevenfold. The drink filleth thy veins with fire; it maketh thy arm invincible and thy heart dauntless. On soma dost thou feast like a lion at a kill, and thy power becometh boundless.
For those who bring thee the soma, thou art the mightiest of allies. Thou risest up in their behalf; thou goest forth to their wars. No foe can prevail against thee when thou art filled with the draught. The earth itself trembleth at thy approach; the very stars seem to flee from thy countenance when thou art thus empowered.
We, thy worshippers, do pour out the soma with reverent hands. We crush the plant and strain it through the fleece. We set it forth upon the altar, a gift most precious and most holy. Accept it from us, O generous one. Let it enter into thy body and strengthen all thy limbs. Become for us an unconquerable warrior.
The singer who maketh the soma-draught and offereth it with a pure heart—thou hearest him above all others. Thy gratitude toward him is boundless; thy gifts flow unto him like a river without end. Riches come unto him; children are born unto him; his name is renowned throughout all lands. Such is thy reward to those who honour thee rightly.
Look upon us with favour, O Indra. We have prepared the sacred drink for thee. We have set our best gifts upon thy altar. We have sung thy praises with unceasing voice. Do not turn away from us; do not pass by our offering. Rather, come thou into our midst, and dwell with us as a true friend dwelleth with his companions.
Strengthen us, O mighty one. Give unto us victory in our struggles. Grant us wealth and long life. Bless our herds and our fields. Let our children grow up strong and wise. Be thou a shield unto us against all harm and all misfortune. We trust in thee; we depend wholly upon thy mercy and thy strength.
O Indra, friend of men and god of gods, accept our humble libation. Drink deeply of the soma that we have prepared. Let thy heart be gladdened by our offering. And in return, grant us all that we desire—health, prosperity, children, and glory. This we ask of thee with voices full of hope and hearts full of faith.
